Jack Sparrow`s Cabin! Captain Jack Sparrow sat alone at his desk one evening, planning the course for his next quest, when bright lights appeared out in the water. Intrigued, but still hard at work, Captain Jack smiled, gave a chuckle, and continued on his work. When the lights flashed again, his curiosity levels burst, and Jack headed on over to the window for a look, making sure to bring along his nearly finished bottle of rum. “Bugger!” he muttered, while getting up, “Why, is the rum always gone?” Though we saw very little of Captain Jack’s cabin aboard the Black Pearl, the idea intrigued me. When I completed this a short while ago, and thought to myself, “This had to be done!” And so it is now. I had purchased a set of Life Lites back in December for a project which was never finished, and have had them sitting on my shelf in a Ziploc bag ever since. Glad to have finally put them to use. the tumbler Redesigned Batmobile has an intimidating look, the heart of a tank and, oh, yeah -- it's a hybrid first introduced in Batman Begins, this version of the batmobile continues to conquer evil in its latest film, The Dark Knight. peeking out from under a tarp at waynes enterprises Applied sciences division, Bruce wayne discovers a scrapped military vehicle called "The Tumbler" that would eventually become the Batmobile for the dark knight. The Batmobile, a car buff's ultimate dream machine, has been redesigned for "Batman Begins" -- the latest installment of the movie franchise. Wednesday. This is definitely not your father's Batmobile. Gone are the clean lines and sleek profile that inspired generations of caped crusader fans. The new Batmobile is all business, from its menacing face to its 44-inch off-road rear tires. And in keeping with the times, the new design is a hybrid -- though not the fuel-stingy, gasoline-electric variety currently coveted by car-buyers. The Batmobile's 5.7-liter Chevy V-8 is mated to a jet engine that enables the car to leap tall buildings in a ... wait, that's another superhero. "Batman Begins" producers call it a "sports tank," blending the sexiness of a high-performance car with the ruggedness of an SUV. In the movie, the car is developed for military use by Gotham-based Wayne Enterprises. Called "The Tumbler," it is designed to move soldiers and equipment over hostile terrain -- hence its jet-powered jumping capability. Working with director Christopher Nolan, production designer Nathan Crowley conceived the car's shape by combining scale models of Humvees and Lamborghinis. Professional car designers are impressed. "I give the new Batmobile two thumbs up," saidPatrick Schiavone, Ford Motor Co.'s director of car design. "The new Batmobile should be considered a character in the film, reflecting Chris Nolan's vision of a simpler, darker, more dramatic Batman." the one used in the movie was a stunt car capable of high speed jumps and reaching over 100mph. its design, including multiple flaps and a sleek luxury-like model provide extra speed and leverage, and the two wheels in the front absorb shock from landing on high speed jumps. YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH I LOVE COMMENTS boom babeh the car that started it all (my first one i ever collected) The same year that the second live-action Batman movie, Batman Returns, was released, a new television series began. Batman: The Animated Series used a distinctive visual combination of film noir imagery and Art Deco designs with a very dark color scheme, with elements of the Fleisher Studios' Superman shorts and Japanese anime also incorporated. The show created an "otherworldly timelessness" by combining "vintage" design elements like police blimps and pre-World War II vehicle styles with modern components like jet propulsion and computers. The Batmobile for the series also combined style elements from various eras to produce a long, low vehicle with square lines, long fins, and a blunt nose with a massive chrome grill that could have been from any time from the 1930s to the 1990s. Despite the obvious presence of the jet exhaust, the show frequently used sound effects from a reciprocating engine for the Batmobile's driving scenes. This, plus direct views of the engine (as seen in the episode "The Mechanic"), suggest that the car used a large piston engine for primary power and an auxiliary jet for high-speed acceleration. Among the features of the Animated Series Batmobile were: smoke and oil dispensers, wheel slasher hubs, a missile rack, tear gas dispensers, ejection seats, titanium alloy wheels and body panels, and reversible jet exhausts. It also had a "shield" mode to prevent people from tampering with the car when it was left unattended, though it was not as overt as the "cocoon" used on the 1989 movie Batmobile. Despite the obvious presence of the jet exhaust, the show frequently used sound effects from a reciprocating engine for the Batmobile's driving scenes. While the Batmobile in the series has two seats inside, it is shown having only one seat in the film, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. -- Batman TAS FTW!! -- Related topics: 10 lug truck wheels aerolite fifth wheel hot wheels club malaysia wheel alignment spec hot wheels pictures to print wagon wheel sofa gsxr chrome wheels kart steering wheels play free hot wheels games |

(10) Charvolant a kite-drawn carriage George Pocock (1796 - unknown) was an English schoolteacher and inventor of the "Charvolant", a kite-drawn carriage. Pocock was interested in kites from an early age, and experimented with pulling loads using kite power, gradually progressing from small stones to planks and large loads. He taught at a school in Prospect Place, Bristol and continued his experiments with his pupils. By 1820 he had determined that in combination they could support considerable weight and began experimenting with man-lifting kites. In 1825, he used a 30-foot kite with a chair rig to lift his daughter, Martha (the future mother of cricketer W.G. Grace) William Gilbert Grace was born on 18 July 1848, in Downend House at Downend, just a couple of miles, as the crow flies, from Frenchay Common. WG's parents, Henry Mills Grace and Martha Pocock, were married in 1831, just a few weeks after the Bristol Riots had devastated the centre of the city. Henry was a doctor, and Martha was the daughter of George Pocock, who ran a school close to St. Michael's Hill in Bristol, was a leading light in the local Methodist movement, and a prolific inventor. George Pocock's best remembered inventions involved huge kites, some designed to pull carriages, and one from which the brave Martha, in an armchair, was flown up over the Avon Gorge over 270 feet into the air. Later the same year and continuing to use his family as subjects, he lifted his son to the top of a cliff outside Bristol; his son briefly dismounted from the chair at the top of the 200-foot cliff and then concluded the test by releasing a clip on the kite line which allowed him to slide down the line in the chair and return to earth. Having concluded that kites were capable of lifting humans, he turned again to experimenting with them as a way of pulling loads, this time as a method of pulling vehicles. Using kites in various arrangements he determined that a small number of large kites were capable of pulling a carriage with passengers. In 1826, he patented the design of his "Charvolant" buggy. This used two kites on single line 1,500 to 1,800 feet long to provide enough power to draw along a buggy carrying several passengers at considerable speed, similar to the modern sport of kite buggying. In his book, The Aeropleustic Art or Navigation in the Air by the use of Kites, or Buoyant Sails, Pocock records that it performed at the rate of 20 miles an hour over considerable distances and that a mile could frequently be covered even over heavy roads in 2? minutes. A group of three Charvolants made a trip of 113 miles together, and on a run between Bristol and Marlborough one of the buggies sailed past the mail coach, which at the time was the fastest passenger transport. On another trip, a Charvolant passed the coach of the Duke of Gloucester, a breach of etiquette that was considered so rude that the occupants had to stop to let the Duke pass them. Four control lines to the kite provided a method of steering; these lines were paid out or drawn in from large spools mounted on the front of the carriage. Large wheels allowed the carriage to utilise the power from the kites effectively. In addition to controlling the kites, the driver had to steer the carriage by means of a T-bar which controlled the direction of the front wheels, and was responsible for the brake, an iron bar mounted on the carriage which dug into the road when the lever was pulled. Controlling the Charvolant was difficult, and this may have been why it never became successful commercially, even though it escaped the tolls levied on the roads for horse-drawn carriages: tolls were applied according to the number of horses and since the Charvolant had none it incurred no charge. Pocock advocated other uses for kites in his book, including auxiliary sail power for ships (similar to modern traction kites), a means of dropping anchor and effecting rescues from shipwrecks. He also used his book to advertise other of his inventions, including a celestial globe for viewing the stars that a teacher and pupils could stand inside. no capsizing. Spailboat, symmetrical version, with eight times detail 41 for controlling eight wheels Sailing port, Front View. The reason for showing this picture at the end of the show: The lift, specified as vector 10, is directly in line with the waterappendages (keelwheels), #1. Vector 11, the vertical component of vector10, is equal to the weight / mass of the craft. This is simple, however, has not been applied yet, because the control over the sailworks is now for the first time achivable via stable supports. This is not a kite surfer, it is a windsurfer, holding the sails in hands, making high speeds controlable. Spailboat, symmetrical version, with eight times detail 41 for controlling eight wheels. One wheel is working as extra sail, one is working as planning foil. The setting up of these planes is possible with a one dimensional force, because of detail 41. The spoilers, at the high side, provide downward lift forces to keep the spailboat from leaving the water. In order to sail half wind, the swords have to stay in the water. Racing with sailing crafts is done on the half wind course. This course lays perpendicular on the wind. As waves role with the wind, riding the wave is therfore done on the half wind course. Wave riding is called, surfing. The surfer firstly catches a wave by paddling along with the wave motion, and when the surfer gets caught by the wave, the surfer then rides the wave parallel with the crest, in the so-called `pipeline`. The similarity, between windsurfing and windmills, is the direction of the movement of the blades. Windsurfers move tranversely and windmill blades move angular, resp. circular. In all, by going perpendicular on the wind, the highest possible speed is obained. And, fast moving blades, going perpendicular on the wind, are placed almost flat on the wind. Windsurfers show us how to handle a sail in a stable way, while going on the half wind course in high winds. Windmills, on the other hand, show us that the blades break in high winds. The lesson from windsurfing is therefore that blades need be held firmly in place, in high wind. Blades on conventional windmills are not held properly, because the blade ends are loose ends, and besides, the masts will flip and vibrate. The blades in turbo windmills are held at their ends. The blade ends are clipped in a ring. This ring is inclosed within a series of wheels, which work as the bearings. Finally, we can say that a turbo windmill is very much like a windsurfer. They both hold the blades firmly in place. The difference between tranversely windsurfing and spinning is obvious. A turbo windmill is a round going windsurfer, so to speak. Let us now go off course, in order to come back to where we want to be, eventually. At the start. We picture ourselves a frontal view of a windmill and specifically, a turbo windmill, which holds the blade firmly with respect to the ground / foundation. We follow the spinning of one particular blade and we imagine it in slow-motion. Now, keep the position in mind, in which the blade is at its highest, or lowest, point. In addition, we look at the blade from above. We see that the angle of attack and the positon of the blade are in fact similar to the position and angle of attack of a windsurfer?s sail. The only difference between them is the slanted line of the windsurfer?s sails. clip on wheel weights Buy your Valentine a little Fifties Glamour! Throughout the years, baseball bats have been made from many types of wood, including ash, oak, maple and hickory. However, as years went by players found that bats made of ash would hit the ball best. Ash makes a medium-weight bat which allows a batter to swing at the advancing ball quickly. While the film was moving and insightful, it reiterated one aspect of school systems that I despise: magnet schools. My beef isn't with the concept of narrow focus/talent schools or that they may yield better educations. Your kid's a whiz at math? The next Sergei Rachmaninoff or Bobby Fischer you say? That's one thing; there are longstanding programs for "gifted & talented." My issue is that magnet schools destroy neighborhoods from the inside out by withdrawing a significant part of a child's upbringing from the very neighborhood they grow up in. Think about it: send a kid across town to a school in another neighborhood, presumably as good as or [predictably] more affluent. That child develops as a sort of transplant - maybe he/she flourishes over there; but is that necessarily beneficial for either neighborhood? I say no. I say it ingrains flight and ambivalence tendencies because that child is spread too thin, too early. It's not easy for a young person to be sent far from "the nest." Too much pressure, shoved out of the nest too soon. Nests exist for a reason, they protect until they aren't necessary any longer. And what about lotteries? How many troubled schools systems resort to a game of pure chance to save a few kids? Lottery if you win, Russian Roulette if you miss out? Poor & failing schools get the shaft when magnet schools exist as "a way out." Huh? You mean I don't have to be active in my neighborhood school?! Spin that wheel you grim reaper of education, my money's on lucky #73! Seriously, I was born in '73 and it works all the time. No, not really but it did work a couple of years ago during the Final Four... Magnet schools would be great if they were the pinnacle of a solid pyramid. The problem is they are often the top of a rickety system and are viewed as a safe haven for education. As if you crossed some broke-ass rope bridge over a cavern, but managed to make it to the other side. Magnet schools defer problems to those regular schools that are left; and the people left with it - the ones that didn't act or didn't get lucky. Either way, those 'leftovers' are at a clear disadvantage because a.) the ones that didn't act may be passive or just complacent and b.) the unlucky ones just want out, there's another sweepstakes next year! Maybe we just make do, or daddy takes a second job to pay for private school. Guaranteed success then, right? What happened to sticking to it, digging in, growing roots? I'm talking to the parents. Thrustmaster VG Thrustmaster TH8RS Gearbox for PC & PS3 To meet the expectations of numerous motor racing fans, Thrustmaster is launching the TH8 RS - a high-end, separate and versatile gearbox. The device’s two configurations - H-pattern and sequential - enable drivers to select their favorite driving style. Some virtual drivers cannot imagine shifting speeds otherwise than with a specific gearbox. With the TH8 RS, which boasts unrivalled technical innovations supported by pending patent applications, Thrustmaster now offers a device that is realistic enough to satisfy even the most demanding drivers. At first glance, the TH8 RS looks realistic enough to be fitted to a real car. It features a 13 cm (5.12 in.) tall stick with a removable knob; the stick is compatible with real-life universal gear shift knobs. The TH8 RS includes two interchangeable shift plates, each suited to a specific configuration - "H-pattern" (7 gears plus 1 reverse gear) and "Sequential" (pull the lever towards the "+" mark to gear up, and push it towards the "-" mark to gear down). To allow users to freely adjust the TH8 RS to their convenience, the position and the rotation angles of the shift plate and clamping system can be adjusted by 360 degrees. The removable clamping system, optimized for any type of support, is also open to customization: it is suited to both table tops and shelves (1 to 55 mm thick) and cockpits alike (built-in "screw threads" are located under the TH8 RS). Gear strokes can also be adjusted (via a downloadable PC application and the device’s internal memory), as well as the gear shift’s resistance. (19) Primeval Traffic Warden There is competition for the tea-time tosh market now, because Primeval has returned, a series which, keeps one toe dipped in the pool of self-mockery just in case anyone gets too pompous about it. Ben Miller, drily undermining the notion that it all might actually be in earnest. For me, though, they don't self-mock nearly enough, particularly given a disregard for lowest-common denominator plausibility, which even a seven-year-old might have problems with. In this episode, for example, the authorities were fretting at one point about possible civilian witnesses, despite the fact that a giant crocodilian dinosaur had just stampeded through central London during the rush hour, consuming a traffic warden played by Chris Wilson as a mid-morning snack. Not only would it have been noticed by hundreds of people within 30 seconds of leaving the British Museum, but the mobile- phone footage would have been posted on YouTube five minutes after that. In these things, surely, the big fibs don't matter (that Eocene dinosaurs can burst through glitterball "anomalies" into our universe), but the little fibs (that nobody but the experts would notice them) nibble away at the pleasure of the thing. Not much to stand on 0 PHOTOGRAPH PARTICULARS 0 This cap rock took on whimsical and fascinating form from every different angle. 0 ACTIVITIES DAY FIVE OF TWELVE 0 After a good night’s rest at Farmington, New Mexico we left at dawn, as was our custom on this trip, with three major destinations in mind: Bisti (pronounced: Biss Tie) badlands; Chaco Canyon; and Bandelier national monument. We had motel rooms reserved at Santa Fe. The hike into the rock and clay formations at Bisti turned out to be my favorite stop on the entire road trip. I had never been there before. We were the only ones there, the weather was bright and clear, and the formations were absolutely amazing. I used my small Garmin etrex to make certain that we would hike to one of the two “good spots” and back out, in the most time efficient manner. There is another good section of Bisti that I know, one day, I will return to visit. Same with the De-Na-Zin area. Always something for another road trip. After Bisti we made our way to Chaco Canyon and visited Chetro Ketl and Pueblo Bonito. I had been to Chaco three times before but never in a situation where I wasn’t rushed for time. Ed and I enjoyed our walks to both ruins and took our time. After Chaco Canyon it was clear (using the ETA on the NUVI navigator), that we weren’t going to make Bandelier with enough light to really enjoy it, so for the first and only time on this road trip, we altered our route solely as a result of “running out of time”. There were several times we altered plans due to weather and dirt (mud) road conditions. So instead of traveling the highways that would lead us to Bandelier from Chaco, we checked the map and took a scenic but more direct highway into Santa Fe (highway 96 instead of highway 4 that would have taken us to Santa Fe via Bandelier). We got into Santa Fe right at dark, in time to check out the historic town square, the cathedral, and get a good meal. The next morning would follow a now established and predictable routine: On each and every day of this road trip, Ed and I would load our gear back in the Jeep right at or just before dawn, always looking forward to the new day’s destinations. The way a road trip should be. 0 3,875 MILE/12 DAY ~ 4 CORNERS ROAD TRIP OVERVIEW 0 At the start of year 2011, I made tentative plans to take a two week solo “road trip” through the Four Corners area (The Colorado Plateau), during the last half of March. Then, if my wife could get the time needed off from her part time job, I also planned a “road trip” vacation to the Southwest, in April with her. When I put the plan together for the March trip, I decided to see if an old friend of mine, Ed (Flickr’s: OldWrangler), might be interested in joining me. I volunteered to take my old four wheel drive pickup truck and split the gasoline expense with him. We would each get an inexpensive motel room on the road to serve as “base camps” to hike, photograph, and explore back roads in the Four Corners area. Not only did Ed accept but he also proposed that we take his brand new 4-door Jeep Wrangler instead of my old pickup truck. That didn’t take any thinking on my part. I LOVE Jeeps and Ed and I have always got along well (decades ago, I worked for him and we had taken a fun road trip together back in 2008, along with my friend John and my youngest son). The deal was sealed. We left my house in Central Washington early Monday morning on the 14th of March. We returned 12 days and 3,875 miles later on Friday evening March 25th. We spent a lot of time drinking Diet Pepsi from the ice chest and keeping the hits of the 60s (and occasionally the 70s), cranked up high on the Jeep’s Sirius satellite radio sound system. Sing along music! “Road trip” tunes. Weather often dictated changes to our proposed route and activities. We stayed flexible, and in the end we visited the large majority of places we had hoped to see, when the road trip began. We had sun and clear skies, snow, dust storms, and high winds at times. Ed’s Jeep had an outside temperature display. We drove in everything from18 degree weather to temperatures in the 70s in New Mexico. Here in outline form are the places we saw, hiked, photographed, and visited during the 12 day road trip: Mon 3.14.11 * Interstate travel from my house in Central Washington to Lehi, Utah Tue 3.15.11 * Scenic back roads ( Hwys: 6, 89, & 31) from Spanish Fork to Huntington, Utah * Dirt road travel to “The Wedge” and down Buckhorn Wash to I-70. * Side trip to the Head of Sinbad petroglyph and then on to Moab. Wed 3.16.11 * Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands NP (Mesa Arch & Upheaval Dome) * The Shafer “Jeep” Trail down to the White Rim road and back to Moab. * Hike to Delicate Arch & visit Windows section in Arches NP. Thu 3.17.11 * Newspaper Rock in the Needles district of Canyonlands NP * Attempt back road travel thru the Abajo Mountains to Monticello * Edge of the Cedars museum in Blanding, Utah * Hovenweep - Square tower group lo Newspaper Rock 0 PHOTOGRAPH PARTICULARS 0 An overhang of sandstone has protected this naturally flat desert varnish panel for ages. It has become the place for ancient and more modern travelers to state: "por aqui paso" (I passed this way). This is on highway 211 entering the Needles district of Canyonlands National Park. 0 ACTIVITIES DAY FOUR OF TWELVE 0 Day Four was pretty much a “travel” day on this road trip. We left Moab Thursday morning and headed for Farmington, New Mexico. We took a short trip west into the start of the Needles district of Canyonlands NP to see Newspaper Rock. Years ago, my wife and I had traveled into the Needles district with our four wheel drive Isuzu Trooper, driven the sand wash down Salt Creek and Horse Canyon to hike to Fortress and Castle Arch. Ed and I decided at Newspaper Rock to back track a short ways and try a paved “loop” route into Monticello. We climbed high and steadily on FR 174. The views were outstanding. At a “T” we turned right to a small frozen lake set in an aspen grove (Shay Road to Aspen Flat). Returning to Forest Road 174 we almost made it to the summit, when we ran into snow on the road too deep to tackle. A newer car had been left in the middle of the road, where they had become stuck. We retraced our route down the side of the Abajo Mountains (Abajo translates to “under” in Spanish), then on to Blanding, Utah. Here we had one of the best meals on the trip (Homestead Steakhouse). We visited the modern “Edge of the Cedars” Native American museum at Blanding then drove to Hovenweep National Monument. I kept shaking my head at all the changes that had taken place over the years since my wife and I made trips to the area. In the 70s the Edge of the Cedars was just a dirt trail to an overlook and pour over by some cliff dwellings. Back then, we had driven miles of dirt road to Hovenweep, to an unmanned small ranger’s station and parked right next to Castle ruin. We hiked down into the canyon to square tower ruin. On the last trip I filmed my wife and our kids hiking the area with a VHS movie camera. But now, Ed and I drove his comfortable Jeep on paved roads all the way to a large modern well staffed visitors’ center at Hovenweep, where the trail out to Castle ruin is paved. No longer are you allowed to hike down into the canyon floor beside Square Tower ruin. That said, the loop hike along the rim that has been developed, the excellent visitors’ center, and the helpful rangers - - make a visit and hike worthwhile. It also provides more protection to the ruins that unfortunately, occasionally are vandalized. From Hovenweep we headed for Farmington via back roads, with me constantly having heated arguments with the GPS navigator I choose to call “The NUVI lady”. She is usually right but when she errs it is a big one. We didn’t travel the route we intended to Farmington, but we got there. Shiprock was a footnote stop on the way to Farmington. With rain in the area we didn’t want to take any of the dirt roads leading close to it, so satisfied ourselves with “roadside” snapshots of the brooding volcanic neck that was such a classic landmark to early travelers (Shiprock). The Valuable Office Professional "My boss is always in crisis mode."" ""My boss never gives me all the information I need."" ""My boss doesn't understand what I do."" ""My boss never says thank you."" Sound familiar? It is the assistant who bears the brunt when manager and assistant are working ""out of synch."" This unique book shows assistants how to take charge of their relationship with their boss -- using a multitude of tools, tips, and interactive exercises to help assistants meet the challenge and make themselves indispensable. They will learn how to: * bridge communication and workstyle gaps with the boss * take responsibility for their own job satisfaction * focus on shared goals, both long-term and short- term * take purposeful actions aligned to their manager's actions * use specific techniques to ensure they and their managers work as a team * clarify priorities -- for themselves and for what their managers need Nearly all business books deal with managing a company. The Valuable Office Professional, by Michelle Burke, addresses the usually neglected but nonetheless critical matter of managing a manager. Approaching issues from the perspective of the staff, Burke shows how to develop the assistant-boss relationship into a true partnership. Tips and exercises are included to help transform these often one-way associations into effective teams, even when the boss chooses not to see the assistant as a counterpart. (13) Old Limo Used to be a stately transport. A limo in days gone by, pulled by sweat and muscle. Today, we toil with our brains till we develop migranes, many still sweat it out in production floors and under rain and sun....many, manay more, in fact all of us toil with our tears and heart as well in our earthly shell and in the relationships that we foster and grow...and often get blown away. " …I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? 27 Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? 28 “And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, 29 yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. 30 And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith? 31 “So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ 32 These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. 33 Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” Matthew 6:25-33 NLT Valuable This ball was the key to this shot from Sunday. The mission was a family and maternity shoot with a not always willing subject. Luckily I asked the parent's to bring a few precious toys. Whenever grumpiness started to set in we could just pull this ball back out and re-direct everything. I wish I had a valuable ball like this some days for myself, maybe I do with photography. Motor: L4, 1.296 cc. Both cars remain as popular today as when there were in production, their lasting success ensured not only by their attractive styling and performance, but also by their straightforward construction and the ease with which they can be maintained. John Thomason's meticulously researched book charts their development, covering for each the many changes to the body and chassis, engine and engine bay, interior and transmission and suspension. Thoroughly cross-referenced, this is an easy-to-use and quick reference guide, invaluable to owners wishing to maintain or restore their cars to be as near factory specification as possible. High Speed Photography - the poor man's 5 minute bullet switch This is the heart of the high speed photography setup - the event trigger. The cardboard was a square piece, ripped off a shipping carton (Thanks, Digikey Corp!) with a 4" x 6" or so rectangle window cut out the middle. It's the standard 1 ply corrugated cardboard. On both sides are taped a sheet of aluminum foil, held on with blue painter's masking tape. I happened to just have a roll lying around in my shop. Wires connect the foil pieces to pocket wizard - actually, I used the FlashZebra pocketWizard hot shoe adapter, but this time around, the pocket wizard itself is plugged into the hot shoe. I didn't want to gimp a perfectly good adapter, so I just stripped off about 4" of insulation and wire wrapped the bare wire around each of the terminals on the phono plug, and masking taped it down. My perfectionist electrical engineering Dad would disown me if he saw the wiring. The PW is actually a multi-max. It is set to delay-trigger. This part is key; we can dial in at 0.1ms (1/10,000th sec) interval the delay between when contact is made and when the flash fires - allowing the projectile time to reach its intented target. I'm using the Irwin clamp here for two reasons; to hold the bullet switch up and most importantly to keep the electrical contact nicely seated. The bare wire just touches the foil underneath the clamp - nothing fancy. In my next version I'll actually add a spring battery clip, but for now, this works. Firing through the two pieces of tin foil closes the electrical contact - then starts the millisecond delay (we used 6.5 ms, but this will depend on the gun's muzzle velocity and the distance to target). This number was arrived at with rough back of the head calculations followed by fine tuning of the numbers. high speed balloons 4262 High Speed photography of water balloons exploding.
