St Patrick is one of Ireland's most important and most loved saints because he was "Ireland's apostle", credited with bringing Christianity to the island's shores and to its people. The cathedral is located just beyond the old Dublin city wall, adjacent to the famous well where St Patrick was said to have baptized converts on his visit to Dublin. Unusually, it is not the seat of a bishop today, as Dublin's Church of Ireland Archbishop has his seat in Christ Church Cathedral, with Saint Patrick's being (since 1870) the National Cathedral for the whole island, drawing chapter members from each of the twelve dioceses of the Church of Ireland. Saint Patrick's is headed by a Dean, an office which has existed since 1219, the most famous holder being author, Jonathan Swift. In 1192, John Comyn, first Anglo-Norman Archbishop of Dublin, elevated one of the four Dublin Celtic parish churches, the one dedicated to St. Patrick, beside a holy well of the same name and on an island between two branches of the River Poddle, to the status of a collegiate church, i.e., a church with a body of clergy devoted to both worship and learning. The new collegiate church fell outside the City boundaries, and this move created two new civic territories, one under the Archbishop's temporal jurisdiction. The church was dedicated to "God, our Blessed Lady Mary and St. Patrick" on March 17, 1192' The basis of the present building, as noted, the largest church in Ireland, was built between 1191 and 1270, though little now remains of the earliest work beyond the Baptistry. Much of the work was overseen by the previously mentioned Henry of London, a friend of the King of England and signatory of the Magna Carta, who was also involved in the construction of Dublin's city walls, and Dublin Castle. The tower (Minot's Tower) and west nave were rebuilt between 1362 and 1370, following a fire. From the very earliest years there were problems with seepage of water, with a number of floods, especially in the later years of the 18th century, caused by the surrounding branches of the River Poddle - even in the 20th century, it is reported that the water table was within 7.5 feet of the floor. This situation ensured there would never be a crypt or basement area. After the English Reformation (an uneven process between 1536 and 1564 but at St. Patrick's, effective from about 1537), St. Patrick's became an Anglican Church of Ireland Cathedral, although most of the population of the surrounding Pale remained Roman Catholic. During the confiscation process, some images within the cathedral were defaced by soldiers under Thomas Cromwell, and neglect led to collapse of the nave in 1544. Under King Edward VI, St. Patrick's Cathedral was formally suppressed, and the building demoted back to the status of parish church. On April 25, 1547, a pension of 200 marks sterling was assigned to "Sir Edward Basnet", the Dean, followed, some months later, by pensions of ?60 each to Chancellor Alien and Precentor Humphrey, and ?40 to Archdeacon Power. The silver, jewels, and ornaments were transferred to the Dean and Chapter of Christ Church. The King designated part of the building for use as a court house, and the Cathedral Grammar School was established in the then vicar's hall, and the deanery given to the archbishop, following the transfer of the Archbishop's Palace to the Lord Deputy of Ireland. In 1549, it was further ordered that the walls be repainted and inscribed with passages from the scriptures. In 1555 a charter of the joint monarchs Philip and Mary restored the cathedral's privileges and initiated restoration and a late document of Queen Mary's reign, a deed dated 27 April 1558, comprises a release or receipt by Thomas Leverous, the new Dean, and the Chapter of St. Patrick's, of the "goods, chattels, musical instruments, etc.," belonging to the Cathedral, and which had been in the possession of the Dean and Chapter of Christ Church. In 1560, one of Dublin's first public clocks was erected in "St. Patrick's Steeple". By 1805, the north transept was in ruins and the south transept was in a poor condition; urgent work was carried out to the nave roof, held up by scaffolding. In 1846, the post of Dean of Saint Patrick's was united with that of Dean of Christ Church, a situation which lasted in law until 1872. An attempt at major restoration began under the direction of Dean Pakenham (Dean, 1843–1864), limited by poor economic circumstances. The Lady Chapel was restored, the floor (then raised several feet) reduced to its original level and other urgent matters were at least partly addressed. In the Pic of the day - The End of Christmas This morning's Mass was the last of the Christmas season. The poinsettias will vanish, the candles likewise. The large wreath that is lit and raised over our heads at beginning of the service will disappear with no sign of it's ever having been there. The ribbons and blossoms and lights will be removed from teh trees, and then the trees themselves will be disassembled and folded away in storage for next year. Later, both at church and on Friendfeed, people were making noises about feeling ashamed that their trees weren't down already. I reminded people that January 6 is the last official day of Christmas, and that it easily extends until the Sunday after, when the church celebrates the baptism of Christ. No reason to feel guilty! We talked about different cultures and traditions as far as tree or not, when to put it up (after Thanksgiving or on Christmas Eve, or other times), when to take it down, etc. I remembered the first tree I put up, when my daughter was an infant. I didn't want her to not have a tree. I found one in the alleyway behind the dorms, where the students had discarded theirs when they went home. I got someone to give me a ride with it, and we put the tiny thing up on a table, the very table she now has in her apartment. I had no decorations, so I tied big long loops of fat green ribbons on the branches, and made lots of origami cranes to sit on the branches. I forget what I did for the treetopper. I grew up with stars on top, but I see to recall it may have been an angel. This year our tree was similar to that first one. It's been a tough year. I went out a couple days before Christmas, and bought a four foot artificial tree half-priced at the corner drugstore. Cleared off the dining room table and linen cupboard, and put the wee thing on top. I was still so tired and focused on cleaning, that I left decorating it to the kid. We put up maybe 10 percent of the ornaments we usually do. No star. No angel. I made an origami sort-of star, but it fell down and remained down. We only turned the lights on for the Monday after Christmas when we had family here. I meant to turn the lights on again, and haven't. We almost took it down last week, but I rebelled. I'd hardly seen it! The plan was to wait until Epiphany and then take it down. Then I found out this week that my schedule for the next few months is changing. I will not have a day off again until March. I know what that means. I need to be super organized and focused, or I will not be able to manage even basics like laundry for clothes, and getting dishes clean. So I have a new plan. I will think about taking the tree down sometimes around Easter, and will try to get the ornaments off before Lent. No promises. Laundry room Directly across from washer and dryer. The brown cabinet was here when we moved in 26 years ago. Thought about painting it, but love the original true crackle finish. The hexagon looms on the pegboard were made for me by a patient at a nursing home, some 30+ years ago. The circle ones were made by my grandpa. He passed in 1989, and made these many years before that. Laundry room Some vintage linens I had, and a small quilt, squares made by one of my husbands now deceased relatives, and put together by my grandmother, also deceased. It is a treasure. The idea was to put the bench on the floor near the Garage entry to remove dirty clothes and shoes. The area underneath was were the shoes were placed. (Former) Long Island Headquarters of the New York Telephone Company Downtown Brooklyn, New York, New York City, United States The Long Island Headquarters of the New York Telephone Company, built in 1929-30, is a masterful example of the series of tall structures issuing from architect Ralph Walker's long and productive association with the communications industry. Walker was a prominent New York architect whose expressive tall buildings, prolific writings and professional leadership made him one of the foremost representatives of his field during his long life. In this dramatically-massed, orange brick skyscraper, Walker illustrates his exceptional ability to apply the Art Deco style to a large office tower. Its abstract, metal ornament on the ground story display windows and the main entrance on Bridge Street, suggests constant movement, and is typical of the art of late 1920s. The structure is faced with multiple sizes of brick, laid in a variety of patterns and planes to create a rich facade design. Horizontal panels of patterned brick enhance each setback leading to the central tower. At the same time, the verticality of the structure is emphasised by narrow sections of facade that soar upward, above others, and by the way the brick is laid to create undulating vertical planes suggestive of draperies. Through his series of telephone company buildings, many of Walker's design ideas evolved so that here he achieved a tremendous sense of harmony and refinement in his use of brick and metalwork, as well as in the overall massing. The location of this large, important structure in downtown Brooklyn emphasized the commitment of New York Telephone Company to the growth and advancement of the most modern telephone service to the expanding area of Brooklyn and Long Island. In this Long Island Headquarters Building Walker was able to apply the Art Deco style and create a skyscraper which met the technological needs of the client and the demands of the New York City Building Code. Art Deco Style The Art Deco or Modernistic style of architecture primarily appeared in this country from the mid-1920s through the 1930s. It has been called an "avant-garde traditionalist'"" approach to creating a contemporary idiom for buildings of the period. As in other self-conscious modern periods, designers and critics of this time articulated the need for a new style that could be deemed appropriate for the vibrant period dubbed the "Jazz Age," and all its accompanying technological developments. They believed that the historically-derived ornamental motifs applied to most of the tall buildings up to this point were unsuitable for their contemporary era. They were trying to relate architecture to the functionally-derived designs of objects made possible and fostered by the burgeoning machine technology™ Much of the architecture that we know as Art Deco was based on accepted, standard forms and construction techniques, which were given a modern cast through the use of a characteristic ornament, and a variety of materials, some new and some simply used in a new way. Most of the architects active in this style had received traditional Beaux-Arts training that called for the creation of the plan and elevations as the first and most important phases in the conception of a building. Ornament was then added to these initial designs, based on ideas which evolved from a variety of influences including: the Paris 1925 Exposition International des Arts Decoratifs, the well-publicized designs of the Vienna Secessionists and the Wiener Werkstatte, the German Expressionists, as well as American architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis H. Sullivan, contemporary theatrical set designs, and Mayan and other Native American forms. The overall shape of tall buildings of this period came about as a result of the 1916 Building Zone Resolution of New York, which mandated setbacks at numerous levels to allow light and air to reach the lower stories of buildings in an increasingly dense city. In 1922, architect and critic Harvey Wiley Corbett (18731954) and architectural renderer Hugh Ferriss (1889-1962) explored the possibilities created by the zoning law in a series of drawings that illustrated progressive stages of design based on the law's height and mass restrictions. These dramatic renderings, published in Pencil Points (1923) and in Metropolis of Tomorrow (1929), significantly influenced architects of the period. The drawings and the laws from which they came directed the architects' attention to the building as a whole rather than to a single facade of the structure, thus altering the whole design process. By visualizing buildings "from every possible angle" the architect was transformed from a designer of facades into a "sculptor in building masses."xui The zoning law provided architects with a sound, rational basis for the form and appearance of the skyscraper as well as a new source of creativity; historical styles did not seem to express the moder Art Deco Chandelier - Myer Emporium Mural Hall, Bourke Street, Melbourne In 1931 Sidney Myer (1878 – 1934) Russian emigre turned Melbourne businessman and philanthropist decided to reinvigorate his store the Myer Emporium by redeveloping his flagship Bourke Street store at 314-336 Bourke Street. Part of this included a new facade in the prevailing interwar style of the time – Art Deco and the addition of several more floors to what was already a very large department store. On the sixth floor a chic European style ballroom with soaring ceilings, sweeping stairs and parquet flooring was planned for use by the emporium’s patrons as a dining room by day and in which Myer could host Parisian fashion shows and hold exclusive Melbourne society events by night. The Myer Mural Hall, so called because of an impressive collection of ten murals by Australian artist Napier Waller, was the realisation of Sidney Myer’s dream. The Mural Hall, a dining hall suitable for a sitting for one thousand people and a venue for fashion parades and performances, was completed in 1933 as part of the sixth floor which was set aside for dining. It is a large rectangular space with a decorative plaster ceiling and balconies and wall panels in a Streamline Moderne style. However, it is the decoration of ten murals by renowned artist Napier Waller (1893-1972) that are the Mural Hall’s claim to fame. The murals took a little over a year to complete and were painted at Napier Waller’s home at Fairy Hills in Ivanhoe before being transported to the department store where they were hung. Completed in 1934, just after Sidney Myer’s death, eight of the murals are almost floor to ceiling, whilst the remaining two are located over the two side entrances. All pay homage to the seasons and to women and their achievements through history in the areas of art, opera, literature, dance, sport and fashion. The western wall features (running south to north) the full length murals; “Spring – The Dance Through the Centuries”, “Summer – Sports Through the Centuries”, “Autumn – Women in Literature” and the smaller mural “Modes of Transport by Land” above the door. The eastern wall features (running north to south) the full length murals; “Winter – Of Actresses and the Drama from Medieval Times to the Present”, “Pageant of Beautiful Women in History”, “Pageant of Women Famous in History”, “Revelation of Fashion” and the smaller mural “Modes of Transport by Sea” above the door. At the north end of the hall, a pair of "mannequin stairs" lead down from two balconies and the change rooms to a common landing. A temporary catwalk or stage was installed at this landing level for fashion parades and performances. The balustrading of the stairs is formed from 'Staybrite' stainless steel in an abstract ribbon design and the handrail is polished timber. The original timber flooring was replaced by parquetry in 1960. The hall is lit by three large and elaborate chandeliers from the original decorative scheme which were designed to provide up to ten different lighting effects. The National Trust classified the Myer Mural Hall noting it as “one of the finest Art Deco interiors in Australia and… one of the most impressive with few parallels anywhere in the world”. Napier Waller (1893 – 1972) was a noted Australian muralist, mosaicist and painter. He served in France from 1916, being so seriously wounded at Bullecourt that he lost his right arm. He was right-handed but learned to use his left hand while recuperating. Back in Australia, he established his reputation by exhibiting more paintings. He is perhaps best known for the mosaics and stained glass for the Hall of Memory at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra, completed in 1958. However, Melbourne has been described as "a gallery of Napier Waller’s work". Pieces of Napier Waller’s works may be found in the Melbourne Town Hall (1927), the State Library of Victoria (1928), the T & G Life Building (1929), Newspaper House (1933), Florentino’s Restaurant (1934), the Wesley Church (1935) and the University of Melbourne (1940) as well as the Myer Mural Hall. Unfortunately, due to the foliage in front of the cottage I couldn't get much of a shot. Now a little bit of history: Built by Robert Balmanno, c.1831, this Gothic Revival home sits overlooking beautiful Seneca Lake in Geneva. Balmanno maintained his own backyard and described it as: " a hanging garden, on half a dozen terraces that extends from the cottage door to the beach". It is a fanciful interpretation of medieval architecture featuring a steeply pitched roof, trefoil-motif vergeboards & pointed gables and arches. The cottage was enlarged in 1851 but not extensively modernized until 1926. It was acquired by Dr. and Mrs. Wm Walker in 1957. Mrs Walker, the former Blanchard Bartlett, was the daughter of Rev. Murray Bartlett who was the President of Hobart & William Smith Colleges from 1919 - 1936. Blanchard Bartlett spent her childhood years in the President's House at the college in Geneva. In March of 1957 she married Dr. Wm. Walker, an orthopedic surgeon, and in that same year they purchased the Balmanno Cottage property. During her 40 years at the cottage she was an ardent supporter of the colleges, the historical society and the Geneva community as a whole. The house is a virtual time capsule representing the lifestyle of the post-WW II years. It is furnished with the Walker's fine collection of early American antiques and decorated in a traditional style with fabrics and wallpapers from the noted New York design firm of Brunschwig & Fils. Combining past and present, the Walkers approached modern life by rooting themselves in a more comforting American past defining 1950s culture with a mix of 18th and 19th century pieces. Dr. Walker accumulated the house's collection of antique furnishings which his wife would later bequeath, along with the cottage & gardens to the Geneva Historical Society in 1997. In 2008 rose bushes were grown and planted to recreate the rose garden that was Mrs. Walkers pride and joy. The cottage remains much as it did upon Mrs. Walker's death. It is located at 583 South Main Street in Geneva, NY. My dad's birthday cake this year is going to be Neopolitan-flavoured (that is, a sour-cream chocolate bottom layer, French vanilla buttercream filling, and a top cake layer of strawberry pound cake) and for the decoration I'm making a deliciously edible ice-cream cone. This "cone" is a mixture of white and dark chocolates that I melted together, spread into a triangle stencil and covered in chopped peanuts. The ice cream component is simpler - pre-coloured round melting chocolate discs were the perfect size! Full recipe (and more pictures!) soon.
