Uncompleted stratospool winder (Stratospool01) Even though it is not finished, I thought that I would post pictures in case someone likes my idea for a brake and has suggestions for improving it. For scale, the spool is about 8" in diameter with a core of 5" diameter. I used .5" plywood for the spool and 1.25" square wood for the main bar of the winder. The brake is operated by twisting the handle that the non-winding hand holds in operation. To make it, I inserted a .5" dowel into a 1" dowel, ran the .5" piece through the main bar of the winder and attached a brake pad to it with tacks. The brake material is a piece of bicycle inner tube rubber. When the user twists the handle, the brake pad rubs on the side plate of the spool, slowing it down. The main problem with this design is that it needs a perfectly round side plate on the spool and the spool must be well-centered on its axle. Replacement spools would have to be the same exact size. The other problem is that I placed the pad too close to the spool so it rubs at the slightest twist of the handle. That's fixable. I think a better solution might be to replace the pad with a wedge that would come between the side plate and the main bar when the handle was twisted. That would not require much precision in the construction of the spool and spools of slightly different diameters could still be interchanged. Ideas, anyone? Snow spikes Tired of waiting for the thaw, I ran 48 half-inch screws through some olde Tioga Psycho knobbies I had around. Mr. Tuffy tire liner lies between them and my inner tube. Run great in the packed snow, a little rough on the solid ice, could use a suspension fork.
