Talking to Girls About Duran Duran: One Young Man's Quest for True Love and a Cooler Haircut

Talking to Girls About Duran Duran: One Young Man's Quest for True Love and a Cooler Haircut

Growing up in the eighties, you were surrounded by mysteries. These were the years of MTV and John Hughes movies, the era of big dreams and bigger shoulder pads. Like any teenage geek, Rob Sheffield spent the decade searching for true love and maybe a cooler haircut. Talking to Girls About Duran Duran is his tale of stumbling into adulthood with a killer soundtrack. Inept flirtations. Dumb crushes. Deplorable fashion choices. Girls, every last one of whom was madly in love with the bassist of Duran Duran.

In his first book, the national bestseller Love Is a Mix Tape, Sheffield shared a heartbreaking true story of love and grief. With Talking to Girls About Duran Duran, he returns with a smart, funny, and emotionally pitch-perfect trip through the music and memories of the eighties. As a confused teenager stranded in the suburbs, mowing lawns, and playing video games, Rob had a lot to learn about women, love, music, and himself. But he was sure his radio had all the answers, whether he was driving an ice cream truck through Boston to "Purple Rain," slam dancing to The Replacements, or pondering the implications of Madonna lyrics.

From Bowie to Bobby Brown, from hair metal to hip-hop, he loved them all. Talking to Girls About Duran Duran is a journey through pop culture of an American adolescence that will remind you of your first crush, first car, and first kiss. But it's not just a book about music. This is a book about moments in time, and the way we obsess over them through the years. Every song is a snapshot of a moment that helps form the rest of your life. Whenever you grew up, and whatever your teenage obsessions, Talking to Girls About Duran Duran brings those moments to life.

Amazon Best Books of the Month, July 2010: Don't be fooled by the title: Talking to Girls About Duran Duran may sound like a dream come true to all the women who she-bopped through the 80s, but at heart it's the Feminine Mystique that every boy-next-door has been waiting for (and will actually read). It's something like a prequel to Rob Sheffield's first, fantastic memoir, Love Is a Mix Tape, taking its cue this time from a musical decade so addictive and eclectic that, as he notes, "every night in your town, you can find a bar somewhere hosting an Awesome 80s Prom Night." This hilarious and heartfelt collection of coming-of-age vignettes is arguably a much more satisfying way to spend an evening, though, particularly if you have even an ounce of the New Wave obsession that courses through it. Sheffield riffs on the songs that saw him through the rapture and misery and bewilderment of being a guy who wanted to understand girls, gleefully skewering Duran Duran along the way (even as he professes his love for them) and paying tribute to tunes that captured some of his best moments. If you're going to revisit your youth, let Rob Sheffield be your guide. Nothing compares to him. --Anne Bartholomew

Rob Sheffield's Top '80s Summer Cruising Songs
Rob SheffieldReading Talking to Girls About Duran Duran is a nostalgia trip you'll love taking: add Rob Sheffield's exclusive playlist to the mix--featured below, with liner notes--and you'll be ready for some kind of wonderful summer night. You can also sample and download these songs in our custom MP3 playlist.

"Little Red Corvette" (1982) by Prince
Little Red Corvette This was my get-in-the-zone song the morning of my driver's test. Prince seemed to be promising me that as soon as I had wheels, all sorts of glamorously messed-up ladies would be trying to hop a ride uptown in my love machine. It didn't exactly work out that way, but at least I passed the test and got my license. Thanks, Prince!

"Missing You" (1984) by John Waite
Missing You I spent the summer of '84 rolling around Boston in an ice cream truck, selling Bomb Pops and Fudgsicles and Nutty Buddys. And with all due respect to Scarface, I got high on my own supply, which means I spent the summer with one hand on the wheel and another one stuffing my face. I was also listening to the radio 18 hours a day, so I got obsessed with this song. I still get choked up at the "heartbreak overload" part.

"Never Let Me Down Again" (1987) by Depeche Mode
Never Let Me Down Again It's weird how bizarre sexual tension fits so well with operating a motor vehicle--you really shouldn't try to drive and feel tragic at the same time, right? But they go hand in hand. No song captures that feeling like this one: just you and your best friend, riding high, leaving the rest of the world eating your dust.

"Is There Something I Should Know?" (1983) by Duran Duran
Is There Something I Should Know? One summer I worked on a garbage truck on the southeast expressway into Boston, picking up trash on the side of the road: burger wrappers, soda cups, porn mags, the occasional pair of pants. Duran Duran helped get me through it, although I never did figure out what they meant by "You're about as easy as a nuclear war."

"It Takes Two" (1988) by Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock
It Takes TwoThis brings back fond memories of 1988, when "It Takes Two" was pumping out of every car down my street, with the same "Whoop!" "Yeah!" "Whoop!" "Yeah!" James Brown sample rolling on all summer long. Roxanne Shante's "Go On Girl" had the same sample, so by the end of the summer it was hard-wired into my neurons.

"Our Lips Are Sealed" (1980) by The Go-Go's
Our Lips Are Sealed This song puts anybody in serious danger of a speeding ticket--Gina Schock had to be one of the greatest punk rock drummers who ever banged a gong. I'm sad the Go-Go's had to cancel their farewell tour--but hopefully that just means they'll stick together a little longer.

"Hysteria" (1987) by Def Leppard
This song always reminds me of a cool girl I hung around with in the summer of 1988. She liked setting things on fire, getting both of us thrown out of bars, and Def Leppard. It's funny because this is a classic hair-metal ballad, but with all these glossy keyboards, it sounds like impeccable '80s synth-pop--it could pass for prime New Order or OMD. (Editor's note: Song is available on album only.)

"Left of the Dial" (1985) by The Replacements
Left of the Dial It was the summer of '86 when I road-tripped to my first Replacements show, in Providence. Paul Westerberg was standing at the bar before the show, so I stole the Kool butt out of his ashtray and mailed it to a girl I liked in Nova Scotia. She wrote back, "It stinks to high heaven." But I guess that was the kind of stupid romantic gesture only a Replacements fan would make.

"My Prerogative" (1989) by Bobby Brown
My Prerogative Everybody's talking all this stuff about him! Why don't they just let him live! This is a perfectly badass song for prowling the streets, feeling totally invincible. And if the night ends up in the back of a cop car, it makes an excellent soundtrack to kicking out the windows, because that's what Bobby would do.

"Wild in the Streets" (1986) by Bon Jovi
My Prerogative One of the funny things about Jon Le Bon is that his career album, *Slippery When Wet*, is packed with cruising songs as good as "Livin’ on a Prayer." I always think "Wild in the Streets" could have been Bon Jovi's biggest, bonniest and joviest hit, but for some reason they never played it on the radio; it's the one that got away. I also love how Jon yells that nutty "rock me!" during the guitar solo. Someday I pray that Morrissey will cover this--and change it to "Wilde in the Streets." A guy can dream.

The Bombed out Church, Liverpool

The Bombed out Church, Liverpool

Whilst at Wirral, we decided on a trip across river into Liverpool for some bus photography. Looking for a good location in the Autumn sunshine, which meant long shadows, led us to the steps of St Luke's. This Liverpool landmark is also known as The Bombed Out Church. Completed in 1831, one hundred years later it was bombed during the 2nd World War, and totally burned out. Amazingly, the tower and walls still stand today. Liverpool City Council purchased the building from the Church of England in 1968. Considered by English Heritage, as a building in danger, volunteers are attempting to raise funding. Inside on 5 October 08 is a range of step ladders, an art display from Yoko Ono, hosted by "Urban Strawberry Lunch", who also have a range of "home made" musical instruments on which visitors can make a noise. Drums made from plastic containers and bells from alloy car wheels - they work quite well!

A Cat under Cloudy Sky

The Jaguar C-Type (also called the Jaguar XK120-C) is a racing sports car built by Jaguar and sold from 1951 to 1953. The "C" designation stood for "competition".

The car used the running gear of the contemporary XK120 in a lightweight tubular frame and aerodynamic aluminium body. A total of 52 C-Types were built.

The road-going XK120’s 3.4-litre twin-cam, straight-6 engine produced between 160 and 180 bhp (134 kW). The version in the C-Type was originally tuned to around 205 bhp (153 kW). Later C-Types were more powerful, using triple twin-choke Weber carburettors and high-lift camshafts. They were also lighter, and from 1952 braking performance was improved by disc brakes on all four wheels. The lightweight, multi-tubular, triangulated frame was designed by Bob Knight. The aerodynamic body was designed by Malcolm Sayer. Made of aluminium in the barchetta style, it was devoid of road-going items such as carpets, weather equipment and exterior door handles.

[edit]Racing

The C-Type was successful in racing, most notably at the Le Mans 24 hours race, which it won twice.

In 1951 the car won at its first attempt. The factory entered three, whose driver pairings were Stirling Moss and Jack Fairman, Leslie Johnson and 3-times Mille Miglia winner Clemente Biondetti, and the eventual winners, Peter Walker and Peter Whitehead. The Walker/Whitehead car was the only factory entry to finish, the other two retiring with lack of oil pressure. A privately entered XK120, owned by Robert Lawrie, co-driven by Ivan Waller, also completed the race, finishing 11th.

In 1952 Jaguar, worried by a report about the speed of the Mercedes-Benz 300SLs that would run at Le Mans, modified the C-Type’s aerodynamics to increase the top speed. However, the consequent rearrangement of the cooling system made the car vulnerable to overheating.[1] All three retired from the race. The Peter Whitehead/Ian Stewart and Tony Rolt/Duncan Hamilton cars blew head gaskets, and the Stirling Moss/Peter Walker car, the only one not overheating, lost oil pressure after a mechanical breakage.[2] Later testing by Norman Dewis at MIRA after the race proved that it was not the body shape that caused the overheating but mainly the water pump pulley that was undersize, span too fast, caused cavitation and thus the overheating. What the body shape did do though was to create enormous tail lift, which caused the cars to squirrel their way down the Mulsanne (properly called the Hunaudieres) straight at speeds over 120mph (200kph). The chassis numbers of the cars were XKC 001, 002 and 011, the latter existing today as a normal C-type, the others being dismantled at the factory. An exact copy of XKC 002 has since been created by CKL Developments in England, complete with FIA papers.

In 1953 a C-Type won again. This time the body was in thinner, lighter aluminium and the original twin H8 sand cast SU carburettors were replaced by three DCO3 40mm Webers, which helped boost power to 220 bhp (164 kW). Philip Porter mentions additional changes:

Further weight was saved by using a rubber bag fuel tank ... lighter electrical equipment and thinner gauge steel for some of the chassis tubes ... [T]he most significant change to the cars was the [switch to] disc brakes.[3]

Duncan Hamilton and Tony Rolt won the race at 105.85 mph {170.34 km/h} – the first time Le Mans had been won at an average of over 100 miles per hour (160 km/h). 1954, the C-Type's final year at Le Mans, saw a fourth place by the Ecurie Francorchamps entry driven by Roger Laurent and Jacques Swater

Chesterton Windmill

Chesterton Windmill

Chesterton Windmill is a 17th century cylindric stone tower windmill with an arched base, located outside the village of Chesterton, Warwickshire. It is a Grade I listed building and a striking landmark in South-East Warwickshire.

The windmill is one of Warwickshire's most famous landmarks, standing on a hilltop overlooking the village of Chesterton for nearly 350 years, near the Roman Fosse Way and about five miles (8 km) south-east of Warwick. It was built in 1632-1633, probably by Sir Edward Peyto, who was Lord of the Chesterton Manor House. At this time John Stone, a pupil of Inigo Jones, was in Chesterton, designing the new Manor House, and he probably helped with the Windmill as well. Sir Edward was a mathematician and astrologer and probably his own architect to the windmill, but although claims have been made that the tower was originally built as an observatory, the estate accounts now at Warwick Record Office show that it has always been a windmill, making it the earliest tower mill in England to retain any of its working parts.

It is built of hard local limestone, with sandstone detailing, on a shallow platform of 71 feet 9 inches (21.87 m) in diameter. The mill tower with a cap height of 36 feet (11 m), unique worldwide in structure and mechanics, is supported on six semicircular arches, on piers, the outer faces of which are arcs of circles radiating from a common centre. A sandstone string course surmounts the six arches and runs round the tower, below the windows. There are four windows in the tower, two small and two much larger with stone mullioned windows. A three-light window set in the roof on the opposite side to the sails, has a small plaque above it with the letters "E. P. 1632".

Beside the open ground floor within the arches there are two more floors to the mill, the first, lower, or stone floor 15-foot (4.6 m) above ground level, housing millstones, great spur wheel, hurst frame, sack hoist rope passing through the floor trap, and the upper, second, or hoist floor with brake wheel, main gearing (wallover), sack hoist pulley, and parts of the winding winch. The windshaft and the main parts of the winding system including the wind direction inidicator is installed within the cap. The space inside the arches, until 1930, used to have a wooden structure to store the grain, and an open timber staircase to reach the milling floors. This structure was removed to prevent vandalism. The cap of the mill is a shallow dome which used to be covered with lead sheet, but also because of vandalism is now covered with aluminium. Between the cap and the top of the wall is a system of rollers running in a track plate allowing the cap to be rotated easily. There is a wind direction inidicator on the roof which is continued into the interior, and a small repeat indicator at its lower end, so that the miller could set the mill without leaving his work. The lattice-type-sails are 60 feet (18 m) span counter clock-wise rotation (seen from outside the mill; most of all windmills worldwide rotate clockwise seen from inside the mill - from "under the wind") and with 450 sq ft (42 m2) of canvas. The arched tower covers a very small diameter of 22 feet 9 inches (6.93 m) and it has an unusual "in cap" winding gear for an English windmill, the cap being winded by a hand operated winch having spur and worm gears.

Five Guys Burgers and... Grease?

Five Guys Burgers and... Grease?

We had a Five Guys Burgers and Fries open buy our house... this was the utterly disgusting result of my first and last visit. A burger that verged on being laced with some sort of rubber and fries that dripped with grease.

The bag looked similar to this when it was handed to me over the counter, but when I got it home... well you can see for yourself.

I didn't finish the burger, let alone the fries. I rinsed my mouth out with warm water after "eating" this.

The permanent solution to sun-faded bumpers and trim moldings. Forever Black restores a dark, black, finish on sun-faded bumpers and body moldings. This is not a cosmetic dressing. It's an easy-to-use permanent dye. It permanently colors black plastic, rubber and vinyl with the same polymers that the manufacturers use. It is not a silicone dressing - silicone products will make plastic, vinyl and rubber appear to have regained their color but the change is temporary. Plus, silicone oils have been known to dry out the applied areas creating a bigger problem. Silicone also tends to leave a greasy residue even after buffing.

The local town shrank from 3 500 souls to about a hundred. Big Wheels Roll for sure.

Ferrari F40 1987-1992

Ferrari F40 1987-1992

The Ferrari F40 is a supercar that was produced by Ferrari from 1987 to 1992 as the successor to the 288 GTO, with which it shared some parts. During its production run, the F40 was Ferrari's fastest, most powerful and most expensive vehicle and it remains one of the highest performing street legal vehicles ever produced.

The F40 was in the most literal sense designed as the successor to the company's GTO supercar, but the project's meaning ran deeper. At ninety years old, Enzo Ferrari was keenly aware that his life was coming to an end, and was somewhat disappointed that Ferrari's dominance in international motorsport had faded somewhat over the years. As a result, Enzo wanted a new pet project put into the pipelines, something that could remind the world of the company's capabilities as a manufacturer as well as provide both a competitor to the Porsche 959 and come to be his masterpiece; the company's impending 40th anniversary provided just the right occasion for the car to debut. The plan was simple: create a vehicle that combined the company's best technologies into a no-frills sports car that would come as close as possible to being a full fledged race vehicle while still retaining the necessary equipment to be a street-legal product. It was the last car to be commissioned by Enzo himself before his death.

It was intended that there were to be 400 F40s made, all painted red.

The F40 was designed with aerodynamics in mind, and is very much a creation of its time. For speed the car relied more on its power than its shape. Frontal area was reduced, and airflow greatly smoothed, but stability rather than terminal velocity was a primary concern. So too was cooling as the forced induction engine generated a great deal of heat. In consequence, the car was somewhat like an open-wheel racing car with a body. It had a partial undertray to smooth airflow beneath the radiator, front section, and the cabin, and a second one with diffusers behind the motor, but the engine bay was not sealed. Nonetheless, the F40 had an impressively low Cd of 0.34 with lift controlled by its spoilers and wing.

Power came from an enlarged, 2.9 L version of the GTO's twin IHI turbocharged V8 developing 478 PS (356 kW/471 hp) under 110 kPa (16 psi) of boost. The suspension setup, like the GTO's, remained a double wishbone setup, though many parts were upgraded and settings were changed; the unusually low ground clearance prompted Ferrari to include the ability to raise the vehicle's ground clearance when necessary.

The body was an entirely new design by Pininfarina featuring panels made of kevlar, carbon fiber, and aluminum for strength and low weight, and intense aerodynamic testing was employed. Weight was further minimized through the use of a plastic windshield and windows and no carpets, sound system or door handles were installed although the cars did have air conditioning. Early cars had fixed windows, although newer windows that could be rolled down were installed into later cars and the F40 did without a catalytic converter until 1990 when US regulations made them a requirement for emissions control reasons.

As early as 1984, the Maranello factory had begun development of an evolution model of the 288 GTO intended to compete against the 959 in FIA Group B. However, when the FIA brought an end to the Group B category for the 1986 season, Enzo was left with five 288 GTO Evoluzione development cars, and no series in which to campaign them. Enzo's desire to leave a legacy in his final supercar allowed the Evoluzione program to be further developed to produce a car exclusively for road use.

An F40 LM on display at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The factory never intended to race the F40, but the car saw competition as early as 1989 when it debuted in the Laguna Seca round of the IMSA, appearing in the GTO category, with a LM evolution model driven by Jean Alesi, finishing third to the two faster spaceframed four wheel drive Audi 90 and beating a host of other factory backed spaceframe specials that dominated the races. Despite lack of factory backing, the car would soon have another successful season there under a host of guest drivers such as Jean-Pierre Jabouille, Jacques Laffite and Hurley Haywood taking a total of three second places and one third.

Although the F40 would not return to IMSA for the following season, it would later be a popular choice by privateers to compete in numerous domestic GT series including JGTC. In 1994, the car made its debut in international competitions, with one cars campaigned in the BPR Global GT Series by Strandell, winning at the 4 Hours of Vallelunga. In 1995, the number of F40s climbed to four, developed independently by Pilot-Aldix Racing (F40 LM) and Strandell (F40 GTE, racing under the Ferrari Club Italia banner), winning the 4 Hours of Anderstorp. No longer competitive against the McLaren F1 GTR, the Ferrari F40 returned for another year in 1996, managing to repeat the previous y

From the website:
HED H3 Clincher
(my note: tubulars are for the "real" nerds)
Our H3 wheels offer full on aero performance in any conditions. The key to the wide range of performance is the combination of a 55mm deep rim section, the airfoil section spokes and the smooth transitions between the two. The 55mm deep rim keeps drag low at shallow yaw angles. When the yaw angle goes past 15° the aero spokes work to keep the wheel from stalling, and drag stays flat. The optimum wind angle for the H3 is an amazing 17.5°. H3 clinchers are made with a light and durable alloy rim cap. Tubulars are offered in either alloy rim cap or all carbon.

KGR 258T at work with Knotty.

KGR 258T at work with Knotty.

A picture taken later in life, showing KGR in re-liveried form. The issue of where to put the AEC badge was a difficult as there wasn't really space for it anywhere, but it had to have one. The location is Caernarfon harbour, in the shadow of the castle. I was there on a long weekend and one of my passengers, a one time haulage driver and part time comedian, occupies my seat temporarily. I guess that it would have been circa 1994.
As I pointed out in the previous posting, the coach was a wonderfully reliable performer, but to discuss it's two indiscretions gives a misleading view, however, as it's been requested :-
The other instance to which I referred was possibly my most embarrassing day in business ever. We'd been chartered to take a party for whom we regularly worked to a well known Matlock Bath childrens' venue. The approach to the coach park was via a steep incline on a narrow road, part way up which was a hairpin bend which you may or may not negotiate in one. The day weather wise was deplorable which added to the sense of foreboding. The coach turned off the main road and began it's ascent, slowing as it encountered the hairpin. Now even though I'm a dyed in the wool AEC enthusiast, I would concede that the power steering fitted to the rival Leyland Leopard was superior in it's operation. As the revs dropped, so to did the power assistance, and the coach failed to make it in one. Setting back to take another bite as the only option on the awkwardly angled 1:6 the driver selected bottom gear prior to becoming stationary. The full laden weight of the reversing coach met full engine power attempting to go in the opposite direction ... and something was going to give... and did, the prop shaft sheared. Thankfully in two senses, a. the handbrake was in good order, and b. we were the last coach arrival that particular day, as the one and only access route was now thoroughly blocked. The passengers disembarked and walked the final hundred yards, and the driver phoned for help. There was absolutely no way that a recovery lorry could have assisted on this occasion if we'd have been able and willing to pay, except by maybe winching the rear wheels sideways across the incline. To cut a very long story short, we were able to get the driver to lift the floor trap, and gain us a rudimentary measurement of the distance between gearbox and diff. flanges. He'd no measuring implement, so I seem to recall it was something of the order of 12 Bic biro's and a fag packet! Using the relayed description we were able to ascertain that the one on redundant ex SWT BWN 462K was ostensibly similar. This was removed by a fitter, then he and I bundled it into my Granada and set off at break neck speed out of Staffordshire and into Derbyshire. By now the weather was dire, and raging torrents ran down the hillside and under the length of the coach. By the time the replacement shaft was fitted ... and it did perfectly, Joe, my mechanic was soaked to the skin from lying underneath. Miraculously, no-one seemed to have been adversely affected, KRG was re-started, and resumed it's drive to the coach park, Joe and I returned to the yard. By now it was about 4.15, and the only human thing to do was to get poor soaked Joe off home. When locking up the garage, the phone rang. Against my better judgement, I went back in to answer. Horror of horrors it was the same driver, with the same coach... in the same place! This time for some unbelievable reason an air pressure regulator valve had seen fit to stick, denying a supply to the air operated gears. Once more the coach was immobile on the bend after a failed shunt. At that time, another coach arrived in at our yard, and after a quick check we decanted the tools and equipment from the car and into it. Joe agreed that we'd have to go back, if only to rescue the passengers who's patience was wearing thin... and they were neighbours of his! Before departure, the phone then became red hot, with the theme park complaining bitterly and making threats to get the coach recovered at out expense and put other coach and car users into local hotels whilst we got the situation sorted. TPD 12S, the replacement coach thrashed across country, literally up hill and down dale. Thankfully as we descended into Cromford we noticed the ailing KGR had reprieved and was waiting in a more suitable location! Shortly afterwards we received a letter from the park headed 'Re- runaway coach' informing us that we would no longer be welcome at their venue!! (for the record, there was no 'run away' merely controlled disaster. lol)... oh, and the hirers of the coach declined to use us again ;-(

I wanted to do more with the design of the cake, the customer only gave me the colors and left the rest up to me but I was stumped on what to do. Not only that, it started storming really bad here so I had to halt production (so to speak) and wait until the storm blew over to finish. By the time it did I didn't have much time to do much else before having to deliver it. The customer liked it, so I guess it turned out good!!

The 4th board is a shorter carving style board made for my son. It uses only 2 sheets of 4mm marine ply, glued with epoxy and sandwiched 4oz cloth. It is quite flexy, but is good for a child. At the moment it is only set up with some old trucks and wheels. Still goes pretty quick though. Will need to tighten the trucks, first ride Ben got the Death Wobbles & ... you can see the result.

Board has since been fiberglassed.

BILL TRESTEN

BILL TRESTEN

Bill Tresten - Delivering so much more than ‘Impossible Cheeseburger Pie’
By Jessica Kane

Bill Tresten is a retired structural engineer who for
five years has volunteered once a week with Meals on Wheels, an
organization that delivers nutritional meals to housebound individuals.
I met Bill at the meal site in Chestertown this past Wednesday, where
he introduced me to Mary Bartlett and Linda Lewis, who were preparing
meals for Bill to distribute.
After loading three blue coolers in the trunk of his car, we were off.
"How did you get involved with Meals on Wheels," I asked.
"One year I went down to Houston to visit my brother," Bill said.
"He
was volunteering for Meals on Wheels, and I decided I'd like to do it

too. I wanted to do something that was somewhat useful and meaningful
in my retirement years."
"I would imagine you build a lot of good relationships with people on

the route.”
"Oh, I do," he said, smiling. "It's very rewarding."
Our first stop was Loretta's house.
"I think you'll find this rather interesting," he said, as we
pulled
into a dirt driveway.
"Look," I said. "There's a chicken in the bushes!"
Bill pointed ahead, to dozens more.
Then Loretta's daughter, Teri, came out to greet us.
"How's Loretta doing," Bill asked, handing her a bag of meals.
"Doing pretty good," Teri said. "She's sleeping in the
chair."
"Come meet the rest of the family," she said to me, picking up a
chicken and petting it's head. "This is 'Postcard.'"
"How do you tell them apart?" Bill asked.
"Well, Postcard is smaller than 'The Inspector,'" she
explained.
"'Ida Mae' has beek-marks from getting beat up all the time.
That's
'Slick' because she's always got a grease spot on her tail. And
John
Henry is my 'house pig,'" she said, referring to an enormous pig,

with pretty blue eyes. "He's housebroken… Aren't ya buddy?"
I gazed at the animals, and they looked back, inquisitively.
"You certainly get to meet lots of unique people doing this," I
said
to Bill as we headed towards our next delivery.
"That's for sure," he said.
About a mile down the road, we reached Anita Weber's house. Anita was

sitting at her kitchen table across from her nurse, Dorothy, who was
organizing the day's medication.
Anita is a feisty woman who isn't slowed down a bit by the oxygen she

requires.
"Just be careful if you mention anything about politics," Bill
joked.
"That gets her dander up a little bit."
Her nurse agreed, laughing.
Anita glared at them good-naturedly with her hands on her hips.
Anita is a published poet and I read one of her creations out loud, a
touching poem about a soldier in Iraq. Bill's and Dorothy's eyes
were
filling with tears.
"See, Bill, I do have a wonderful side of me," Anita said. "I'm
not
all jokes."
We visited for a bit, reminiscing about when Anita's husband was
alive and how they traveled across the country in a camper.
And then it was time to go.
"It's like entering a different world with every stop," I said to

Bill, back in the car. "It's much more than delivering meals.
It's an
opportunity for people to be together."
At the next house, Bill knocked on the screen door. "Hello, Dawn,"
he
said loudly. "Meals on Wheels! I have a visitor!"
A moment later, Dawn appeared, happy to see us.
"You're looking well, Dawn," Bill said.
"Day by day," she said, optimistically. "I have so much family
around, it makes a big difference."
"The first time I met Dawn," Bill told me. "I told her what
beautiful
blue eyes she has."
Dawn smiled.
"You do have beautiful eyes," I agreed.
Bill placed the meals on the table.
"Smells yummy," I said.
Dawn looked skeptical. "I read the menu," she said. "And I'm
not
quite sure: 'Impossible Cheeseburger Pie.'"
As we headed to the next house, Bill told me how he used to have more
customers, but they all passed away or went to nursing homes.
"That's the sad part. Getting to know people and having them go
away
for whatever reason," he said.
Most of Bill's customers are women who live alone.
He told me about one customer named Geraldine, who no longer gets
deliveries.
One day Bill found Geraldine on the floor.
"How long have you been on the floor," he asked, helping her back
in
the wheelchair. Geraldine did not remember.
"Why didn't you press your alert button," Bill asked.
She didn't remember she had one.
Bill's eyes began to fill with tears as he relayed this story. "It

happened twice," he said. "And now she's in a nursing home."
"Do you find you have more compassion for humanity since you began
meeting t

worst damned brakes! ow!

worst damned brakes! ow!

There isn't any reason for the sticky-outy handle of the brake, the part you pull back on, to be sticking at precisely the distance and angle where you'd expect to stub your thumb on it during active moments. But the wheelchair store warned me I woudl stub my thumb regularly and badly. The scissor brakes they offered instead, I couldn't manage, because I'd have to bend way over to put them on.

I'm going to write to Quickie and blog about this as well as trying to get someone to machine a properly angled replacement part for me.

The brakes on my Quickie II folding chair were quite similar, but I never stubbed anything on them. I'll have to figure out why. Again, I think it's the angle of the handle and its distance from the wheel.

Daimler Ferret Armoured Car

Daimler Ferret Armoured Car

The Ferret was developed in 1949 as a result of the British Army's need to obtain a replacement model for its WWII light armoured vehicles. Due to the success of their Reconnaissance Scout Car, the "Dingo", Daimler was employed to design and manufacture the Ferret. The Ferret shared many design features with the Dingo, but incorporated a larger fighting compartment and an optional small machine gun turret. It was built from an all-welded monocoque steel body, making the drive extremely noisy as all the running gear was within the enclosed body with the crew. Four-wheel drive was incorporated together with "run flat" tyres. Where fitted, the turret carried a single machine-gun. Six grenade launchers fitted to the hull (three on each side) could carry smoke grenades in British service. It is fast and small enough to be used in an urban environment but strong enough to negotiate rugged terrain off-road. The Ferret is no longer in service in the British Army, although several Commonwealth countries still operate them to this day. A total of 4,409 Ferrets, including 16 sub-models were produced between 1952 and 1971. They were in service in Australia, Canada, Indonesia, India, Iran, Lebanon, Malaysia, Nepal, New Zealand, Philippines, Portugal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Sudan and St Kitts & Nevis. This example is seen driving on the outdoor circuit at The Tank Museum, Bovington, Dorset. This would appear to be a Ferret Mk 1/2, the earliest version fitted with a turret.
