Looking back at trail's end

To get from the end of the "trail" to Delicate Arch, you need to climb over a small fin of sandstone and walk the rim of this sandstone bowl.

We returned to Moab after our Jeep travel off the Island in the Sky plateau, down the Shafer Trail and along the White Rim Road. After a short rest and a big meal, we headed for Arches National Park to take the Delicate Arch hike.

From the time we reached the Delicate Arch trailhead, until we reached Delicate Arch itself, the weather changed dramatically for the worse. High gusting winds made walking around the arch area a real chore. At the end of our visit I climbed up a short section of slickrock to take a photo looking through a small arch at Delicate Arch. I literally could not get near the middle of the small arch the wind was blowing so hard, so I hunkered down and shot a few photos, hiding from the wind at the edge of the small arch.

When Ed and I got back down to his Jeep at the trailhead, both of us were coughing from swallowing so much wind blown Utah desert sand. With all of that said, we both enjoyed seeing the icon arch up close. I had photographed the arch from across the canyon back in the 1970s but had never hiked to Delicate Arch itself.

We did get a reward for our perseverance however. After driving to the Windows section of Arches NP, the sun started to set, and we got some really good “golden light” photos, just as we left the park and it started getting dark. A good day all together starting with Mesa Arch in the morning and ending with Delicate Arch in the evening.

0 ACTIVITIES DAY THREE OF TWELVE 0

We had rooms reserved at the Moab, Utah Motel 6 for Tuesday and Wednesday night. This would serve as our “base camp” for visits to the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands and to Arches National Park.

Taking only camera gear and day hiking packs, we left Moab just before dawn on Wednesday morning for our visit to the Island in the Sky area. We stopped on the way into Canyonlands to photograph the sunrise and to look over and photograph the Shafer trail from the rim.

In the 1980s, I had ridden a dual sport motorcycle (Honda XL500) along the White Rim road and up the Shafer trail. I was hoping that the road might be in good enough shape to travel it on this trip with Ed’s Jeep.

After stopping at the Shafer trail overlook we made our way to the Mesa Arch TH parking. We were pleased to find nobody else there. We would not see one other person on the hike in or out nor doing our stay photographing Mesa Arch. A pleasant surprise.

After Mesa Arch we drove to Grandview Point and took a few photos there. Then backtracking we took the side road to the Upheaval Dome trail. It was the first of several geological formations that geologists have yet to agree on as to what formed it. It appears as a giant crater with a light colored “sharp” dome, rising out of its center. I tried some side by side shots there so I could stitch a panoramic photo together later.

We stopped at the Canyonlands visitor’s center on the way back and found that a free “permit” was required these days to drive the Shafer Trail and the White Rim road, so we obtained our pass and headed down the fun, interesting, and exciting route off the Island in the Sky plateau, down the old Shafer cattle trail to the White Rim road, which then runs along an esplanade above the Colorado and Green Rivers.

Traveling down the Shafer and along the White Rim roads in the Jeep, with windows rolled down, was a real treat. There are some rough spots on the White Rim road so it took us awhile to work our way back to Moab (for a mid-day meal).

That afternoon, we drove into Arches National Park headed for the trail to Delicate Arch. The weather came apart on us by this time and the gusting winds were absolutely fierce. Ignoring the blasting winds as best we could we made our way to Delicate Arch. The bad weather kept the number of people down, but the lighting wasn’t the best - - and staying upright in the high gusts of wind took some work in places. Still, we had come to see Delicate Arch, up close, and the hike there was well worth the time.

Leaving the Delicate Arch trail, the wind dropped down a little as light faded over Arches NP. We drove to the Windows Section of Arches and then out of the park as the sun began to set. Somewhere near the Petrified Dunes viewpoint area of the park, Ed sensed excellent sunset light in the offing, and we parked the Jeep off the side of the road, and climbed a small ridge for some photographs.

Ed’s intuition was perfect. Though the winds got cold, we got some of the best light of the entire day for photography, with warm red sandstones in dusk light and the snow covered La Sal Mountains in the distance (Mt. Peale at 12,720’ is the highest peak in these high desert mountains).

A bright moon peeked through the cobalt blue evening skies and storm clouds traveled quickly across the sky. So that is how the third full day

Between Torrey and Hanksville in the Capitol Reef country, we left the snow storms behind and the weather started looking ...much better. A brief dust storm in Hanksville and the weather really did improve for the day.

0 ACTIVITIES DAY ELEVEN OF TWELVE 0

I got up before dawn as usual (anxious to get going on the next day’s adventures), as did Ed. We stepped outside our motel rooms at the Circle “D”, in Escalante, Utah…at about the same time to the same scene. Unbelievable. Snow. Neither of us had heard a hint of a forecast for this, so it was a total and complete surprise.

Our plans for day 11 had included a considerable number of interesting dirt road routes in the Escalante area, particularly suited to Ed’s Jeep Wrangler. That was not going to happen. When signs in the area state “Impassable when wet”, they aren’t kidding. Nothing slicker or more apt to clog your wheel wells than “Utah mud”. So we had no choice but to change plans.

We filled up the gas tank and had breakfast at the Escalante Subway (same place). The women working there told us that they had already seen the snow plows arriving, and that we shouldn’t worry about crossing the high point on to Torrey on highway 12. Well it snowed heavily on the route and wind was blowing it across the road and starting to drift. Nothing to keep the Jeep from moving on through it, but I was worried that officials might close the road until the temps warmed and the roads were properly plowed.

We stopped several places on our drive from Escalante to Torrey, as the snow storms and breaking blue spots in the sky, between storm fronts, made for some spectacular scenery. By the time we reached Hanksville, the weather was looking much better, lots of heavy wind, but out of the snow and for the moment, any rain.

We drove on to Goblin Valley State park. I had been here three or four times before and each and every time, the weather and conditions for photographing the “goblins” were poor. So now on this day with such a stormy beginning, Ed and I found lots of sun breaks and the conditions (other than the wind), were excellent for getting some goblin photos. In 2010 I experienced a true hail and then mud storm in the same area when I took my wife and two Flickr friends for a hike up to the Twin Windows Caves in the area.

After Goblin Valley along the San Rafael Swell, Ed and I had come very close to closing the large loop we had made on this road trip. When we drove past the Head of Sinbad rock art on I-70, the loop was done, and so were we. It was time to head home.

We drove on to Ogden, Utah and got rooms for the night for the last time on this road trip. Then next day (day 12), would bring us one more snow storm to drive through, then it was on to my home in Eastern Washington.

At the start of year 2011, I made tentative plans to take a two week solo “road trip” through the Four Corners area (The Colorado Plateau), during the last half of March. Then, if my wife could get the time needed off from her part time job, I also planned a “road trip” vacation to the Southwest, in April with her.

When I put the plan together for the March trip, I decided to see if an old friend of mine, Ed (Flickr’s: OldWrangler), might be interested in joining me. I volunteered to take my old four wheel drive pickup truck and split the gasoline expense with him. We would each get an inexpensive motel room on the road to serve as “base camps” to hike, photograph, and explore back roads in the Four Corners area.

Not only did Ed accept but he also proposed that we take his brand new 4-door Jeep Wrangler instead of my old pickup truck. That didn’t take any thinking on my part. I LOVE Jeeps and Ed and I have always got along well (decades ago, I worked for him and we had taken a fun road trip together back in 2008, along with my friend John and my youngest son). The deal was sealed.

We left my house in Central Washington early Monday morning on the 14th of March. We returned 12 days and 3,875 miles later on Friday evening March 25th. We spent a lot of time drinking Diet Pepsi from the ice chest and keeping the hits of the 60s (and occasionally the 70s), cranked up high on the Jeep’s Sirius satellite radio sound system. Sing along music! “Road trip” tunes.

Weather often dictated changes to our proposed route and activities. We stayed flexible, and in the end we visited the large majority of places we had hoped to see, when the road trip began. We had sun and clear skies, snow, dust storms, and high winds at times. Ed’s Jeep had an outside temperature display. We drove in everything from18 degree weather to temperatures in the 70s in New Mexico.

Toys R Us

I've been to New York, NY countless times on business over the years. My preferred hotel is the Westin Times Square because for me, it tends to be centrally located, and I know exactly how to get to every other part of the city from there. While Times Square itself is still an amazing place, the spectacle had mostly worn off on me a long time ago. Or perhaps it was simply that I was always too focused on the next customer meeting to slow down enough and enjoy it.

After finishing an all day training session for a customer in New York the other day however, I stopped at the Toys-R-Us in Times Square, which I realized I'd never been inside. I had known from others that it was big, and had a ferris wheel ride inside of it, but had never seen it personally. As I walked by it en route to my hotel, I was reminded of a request from Paige for a toy from my travels. Certainly there had to be something worthy in one of the worlds biggest toy stores. So, for once, I slowed down, and walked inside.

It's big too. Four stories big. And there's something for everybody from video games, to sports memorabilia, to candy, to action figures, and much, much more. I wandered around for a while, simply enjoying the excess, and stopped at a quite place to enjoy some people watching. I was amazed at how well they monetized on their location - you could buy pictures of you walking into the store, with a guy in a Spiderman (at least that day) costume, on the ferris wheel and more.

Those money making schemes aside, once you took it all in, it wasn't really much different from any other Toys-R-Us. Despite it's size, it didn't seem to have "more" per se, as much as it was all just really spread out. In fact, I had a downright hard time finding a simple toy to bring home to Paige. I settled on a "Hello Kitty: New York" t-shirt that would make for a nice nightgown for her (and which in the end she really loved).

I can finally say that I've been there though, and I'm pretty proud of myself for actually slowing down enough for once to take in this Times Square destination.

A Well Utilized Toy

I'm trying to remember when we got this toy-- I think it was the Christmas of 2001, though it may have been 2000. It's one of those Fisher Price rocker-push mobile-big wheel set ups & I have to say it was the best $30 we ever spent on a toy. It has been used more than any other toy we own. All 3 kids use it, the neighbor kid favors it when over, the kids down the street have one exactly like it but still ride ours when they see it-- any kid who comes to this house uses that thing, and as you can see, it's been well used. :)

The front tire isn't even round anymore. My daughter says "it bumps" when you ride on it. The hole brings back fond memories of the once-real Big Wheels we used when I was growing up, only this one doesn't come with a break-- they still mange to do spinouts with it. :)

Bull's-Eye?

You know it’s funny, when I first became aware of Graham’s true face and not the assorted masks he wears I still didn’t want to believe. I didn’t want to believe someone would not only promise to pay me for rent, food and so on but I didn’t want to believe that someone out there could be that cruel and evil to someone let alone someone who was trying to help them out.

When I walked into the King County Courthouse today on the 12th floor, I opened the door and to my surprise there was Graham sitting on a bench with his duffle bag on wheels… I was taken back a little and I could recognize that mask he so proudly wears when out in public. I like to refer to that mask as “my shit doesn’t stink” mask. He is dressed in a pressed red plaid shirt, light brown pants and brown shoes with a yellow pages phone book on his lap and a pen in his hand. If you have lived with Graham he wears yet another mask… that one of someone who is lazy beyond belief, messy, and is incredibly disorganized.

He notices me, looks down at his lap and sighs. Did he think I have given up? Did he think even though it’s been over three months that I would stop coming to his court dates? Who knows and frankly I could give a damn what he thinks…. But I would be curious to know… Would be curious to know what goes through the people’s minds like Graham. Do they believe their own lies so deeply that they can’t tell the difference between truth and fantasy?

Graham, while standing in front of the judge looks a little worried but calm and collected, I would use the word cold in all senses of the word. Graham now faces an additional 4 charges (Theft In the 1st degree, Identity theft in the 2nd degree, unlawful issuance of checks or drafts, and theft in the 2nd degree). He pleads not guilty to the four new charges and the state again asks for bail to be set at $50,000 (as was his July hearing both times the state was asking for $100,000)… The judge feels Graham can be released with the same conditions as his July 1st arraignment... Of course I don't feel the same, but I know more history and facts then the judge has ever been presented with, which in my opinion is a break in the system.

Court date to set trial or to plea deal (from my understanding) is November 15, 2010.

Though this might seem a step back, I feel that with a better understanding of our Judicial system that at least it's moving forward.

Harley Davidson Softail

In Harley-Davidson motorcycles, the softail frame is designed to look like the hardtail bikes of the past, while still offering the comfort of rear suspension. The shock absorbers are positioned along the axis of the motorcycle, tucked away under the transmission.

series three puss-cat

This is the series three landie of my chum Jerome. It has an incapacitating malady at the moment in that the clutch won't actuate. The master cylinder has been changed and the system, bled which took a lot longer than we thought what with corroded on bolts and a lack of access for ordinary sized spanners.

More investigations due this weekend, as it's been standing for six months I'm sort of wondering if the clutch has seized up. There are a number of possible remedies if this is so short of dropping the gear box but they all sound potentially worrisome.

When the kitten is worried or disconcerted by something it jumps up inside the engine bay for security since through out it's short life the vehicle has never moved.At the rate we are making progress it may grow into an old and sedantry cat before it learns any better.

Series-2 BurroWeavil

The Series-2 BurroWeavil is the infiltrator of the nano-bug forces. Swarms of these robots are released onto an enemy ship, unbeknownst to the pilots, and can hack almost any computer in under a second. Using special electricity-sensing-radar, the BurroWeavil drills into the ship and attempts to find wires located in the walls. After finding said wires, the small spin at the tip of a BurroWeavil's drill is inserted into the wire and forms a direct link to the ship's computer. The robot then broadcasts every scrap of information it finds back to the ship which released it, sending vast amounts of valuable information without a single person knowing.

I may or may not make more of these, depending on whether I can find more Bionicle masks :P

Hess finally went back the old green color trucks that were a big hit for them in the early years. This big green monster truck has some striking features on it such as large tires all around, roll bar, big flames accenting the sides of the truck as well as a ton of chrome all over! If that isn't all, it also has real head and tail lights and comes with multiple sounds. The sounds are operated by buttons mounted along the top of the roll bar. Some of the sounds available are the revving of the engine, a honking sound, the starting of an engine and a flashing light feature that the kids are sure to love! The 2 motorcycles have the friction motor feature and also have real operating lights on them as well! Another quality toy by the Hess Corporation.

Sorry for the stealth-camera-phone blurriness here - I don't normally feel compelled to take pictures of unusual people on the subway, but this guy was carrying a Batmobile. 'Nuff said!

Though Jose Padilha's action-packed crime drama won the top prize at the Berlin Film Festival, a steady stream of controversy and acclaim has followed in its wake. Some critics have even accused the director of promoting fascism, while Padilha (Bus 174) contends that Elite Squad argues against police brutality. New police recruits Neto (Caio Junqueira) and aspiring lawyer Matias (Andre Ramiro) turn to Nascimento when their efforts to operate by the book only lead to frustration (Matias was inspired by author/law student/BOPE member Andre Batista). The burned-out captain sees his salvation in the two childhood friends; as soon as he selects a replacement, he plans to leave the force and spend time with his pregnant wife. Nascimento may find his man, but the ending is far from happy. Brutal and bleakly funny, Elite Squad depicts 1990s Rio as Dante's Ninth Circle of Hell. This is day 2, trip along the Border Track - Dog Fence.

This must be one of the best sand tracks to be found in Victoria/South Australia. It follows the border from near Pinnaroo right down to near the Melbourne - Adelaide hwy.

This track has very large sand hills to get over. Most of these hills have tracks to get around them if you are not able to get over them. Some of these hills are so extreme there's no way anyone will get over them, so this track can very easily be classed as a 'Difficult' track.

Very Important. Check with the SA National Parks and Reserves for information on when the track is closed, and what direction you need to go in.

The track is about 107km. Allow a full day to make this trip. For a more enjoyable weekend, take your time and camp anywhere along the track. Stop in or camp at Red Bluff - scenic red sandstone hill.
(This is where we stopped). Dress warm though as it gets hot in the day, freezing at night.

Make sure you pack all your recovery gear, and travel in a group with other 4wd's. (We had to recover 2 vehicles).

Check the depths of the mud holes. Some for us were over 1 meter deep. Watch out for the holes towards the end, they are really deep!
Momentum is your friend on the sand dunes. We used 15psi tyre pressures. (Try the sand dunes 3x, if you fail, take the chicken path)
We ended up getting lost around the supposed turnoff to red bluff, that according to the maps was "well signposted".

We ended up with broken eggs and bottles.

This is mostly a sandy track with dunes and provides you with a remote location for testing self and equipment without travelling deeper into the outback.

The environment is typical Victorian desert – Mallee country. Expect some scratching from Mallee scrub particularly in the Wyperfeld section and some parts of the Northern Border Track may be overgrown. Soft sand is to be found on the tracks as well as corrugations and hard gravel.

The border track is steeped in history largely due to the dispute which arose from the original survey completed between 1847 and 1850. The result is that the border is actually sighted some 3kms too far West. A fascinating account of this can be obtained from John Deckert at Westprint Heritage Maps if you manage to visit whilst in Nhill.

There is an abundance of wildlife to enjoy whilst undertaking this trip, so watch out for Emu and Kangaroo. Aboriginal rock holes can be found close to the junction with South Bore Track.

We were lucky to reach the top speed of 40 kms/hr.

Widely acknowledged as the most significant and accomplished tenor saxophonist in the world, Sonny Rollins's recording legacy is nothing short of extraordinary. Beginning as a sideman in the late-'40s, he worked with Charlie Parker, Fats Navarro, Bud Powell, Max Roach, Clifford Brown, Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, and Miles Davis. Since recording his first date as a leader in 1954, Rollins has recorded dozens of albums for numerous labels, eventually settling in for a long stay on Milestone. Way Out West, recorded in 1957, is one of two superb albums cut for the small, California-based Contemporary label (the other is 1958's Sonny Rollins and the Contemporary Leaders). Although a consummate sideman, Rollins rarely seems at ease with his pianists on his own dates, and Way Out West's trio format, with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Shelly Manne, dispenses with that problem. Slide Bearings

Park....Stop....or Go

The lettering on these pedals is clear and instructional. This is from one of those passenger carts (like the ones you see at airports). This one in particular was shaped to look like a miniature roofless Hummer H3. I had to position my camera between the steering wheel and the edge of the seat to get this angle for the pedals. Needless to say Live View was invaluable in that situation.

I also think that when you look at this photo, you could end up with more than one interpretation or meaning, depending on how you see it. =)

Later on in the ride, a man in a wheelchair got on the bus so this gentleman had to move. He ended up sitting next to me and I helped guide him into his seat. No big deal, but I figured as long as I had manhandled his elbow, the least I could do is introduce myself. That started a conversation that lasted most of my ride. Nice guy, personable, really smart.... off home to fix his garage door. I have my sight and wouldn't know how to do that, Nor would I care to do that...This fella may be a lot of things, he ain't really handicapped. I think that nothing stops this guy...... He was a nice start to my day.

Three Levels of Play
The Park 'N Go Garage features three separate tiers: a rectangular ground floor plus two circular upper floors. Kids will enjoy navigating each tier with their toy cars, using the ramps to travel from floor to floor. Each floor has been carefully painted with traffic markers and parking slots, adding a touch of realism to the set. Kinlochleven Pioneering hydroelectricity plant and (now demolished) aluminium smelter, with good survival of early company housing, dwarfed by the Mamore hills at the head of Loch Leven. Opened in 1909, it is now obsolete to its original function, but an ambitious programme of phased regeneration has established part of the site as an outdoor tourism and small business centre. There was an inn here in the 18th century (where Pennant breakfasted on minced stag), and, by about 1900, two lodges - Kinlochmore and Kinlochbeg. In 1904 an Act of Parliament established the Loch Leven Water and Electric Power Co, which merged with the North British Aluminium Co Ltd. (set up in 1894) and built the Aluminium Works, 1905-9. Operated by the largest British hydroelectric power station of its day, works consisted of a large factory block containing rows of 76 smelters (closed in 2000 and now demolished), a warehouse, carbon works and laboratory. The power house, with a dramatic long perspective of 10 pelton wheel turbines by Escherwyss of Zurich and an 11 th of similar design, is still in situ and, as such, almost unique. The water supply was fed by the Blackwater Reservoir four miles away, its mass concrete dam by engineers Thomas Meik & Sons, 1904-9, 1 km wide - the largest in Europe at that time. The carbon silos/bunkers, vast arcaded rubble blocks incorporating structures of early reinforced concrete by T. Meik & Sons and A. H. Roberts, were converted in 2002 by Bruce & Neil Architects for the Kinlochleven Land Development Trust as an outdoor activity/interpretation centre and micro brewery. Most of the rest of the carbon factory was demolished in 1989.

A water reservoir uphill from this building drives a Pelton Wheel -- a water-powered motor -- which in turn drives a belt that turns a big axle running the length of the shop building. Various tools are attached by belts to this axle -- Mr. Arii stands next to a drill here, but there are also saws, grinders, planars and various other implements of destruction.
