A moment's hitch on the seat sent my pedalling knee into the bar, and locked the wheel & over I went at @ 10 mph. Reflex put my hands before my head & only soft tissue,not bone, took the brunt. Coarse new broken stone pavement dug towards bone, but I slid instead of snapping things.
Six year old carpal tunnel scars stood up well, running above & below the half dollar sized 'oopses'. Nothing to stitch back, just grow back.
I'm smiling 'cause high wheel 'headers' often are worse..like game over... '~'.
My glasses somehow stayed on. Hi wheel pals, 1/4 mile ahead, only heard my small "ai!" , as momentum, inertia & gravity took over. The rider is 'swatted' with the wheel's turn from a height of eight-ish feet to the hard pavement, headfirst, in less than a heartbeat. Small wonder the Big wheels are 'extinct' and the modern 'safety' bikes swiftly took over.
Unicycles, of any height are waay safer, though less stylish and less comfy for distances.
Tall bikes, well, are hard to resist, plus you can coast, & knees, handlebars & pedals can't clash...as much.....

This was extremely typical of transportation in Nicaragua. It wasn't unusual to see 4-5 people on a dirt bike, only one with a helmet. Usually you'd see a couple kids squeezed between 2 adults, the mother sometimes carrying a baby. Traffic didn't move terribly fast, so the risk of an accident wasn't that great. You wouldn't get 50 feet like this in the States!

Assembly Information

The rest of the Two Rivers kids and company don't seem to be moving much faster. Egwene continues to slowly consolidate her hold as the "true" Amyrlin (finally getting closer to Tar Valon and the inevitable confrontation with Elaida), and Nynaeve and Elayne keep on wandering toward the Lion Throne, again on the run from the Seanchan. Mat Cauthon is barely mentioned, and fellow ta'veren Perrin keeps busy with politics in Ghealdan. The ending does provide promise, though, that book nine might match the pace and passion of the previous books.
If you're already hooked, you could sooner overcome a weave of Compulsion than avoid picking up a copy of Path of Daggers. But if you're new to the series, start at the beginning with the engrossing, much-better-paced Eye of the World. --Paul Hughes

Tour-fest 2011 - Navigation Rocks The Nation - Brownsville to Eugene

Using the maps, guidelines and advice from TravelOregon.com, we were very efficient at route-finding and not getting lost. We were riding from the top of that map (Brownsville) to the bottom (Eugene) this day (with another 50k behind us already that day just getting to Brownsville from Albany) and our position on that map was almost dead center of the horizontal portion having just finished the biggest "climb" of the ride, which added up to about 400 feet in vertical gain.

"The Brown" Motor Bicycle

A very early 20th Century enamelled metal advertisement for "The Brown" motor bicycle, found in the garage in Beamish Museum town area. The style of the vehicles in the background give some clue as to the age of the advertisement. This one is a little unusual in that the cycle and the name are both raised forward in an embossed fashion.

My "vintage" Trek 560 - that I proudly bought new in 1987

This is a classic, mid-80's 531 chromoly steel frame. Lots of upgrades from the original, but all true to the age. I bought this while a freshman in high school and have kept it as a steady rider for over twenty years.

Had a busy day today. Helped a friend move into their new home and in between the move I felt like picking up a bike. Sorry friends. Got a little tired of moving stuff.

I bought a Scott sub 30. It's a hybrid type bike. Pretty much a road bike with mountain bike handle bars.

Didn't have my gear today, so i had to settle for an iphone pic.

Selected juicy bits of my new bike, a Scott Sub 10. Seeing as it's new and adorned with sexy bits and pieces I thought I'd indulge in a bit of my nerdy interest in Product Photography type shooting. And, you know, despite my best efforts it'll never be this clean again.
