The narrow-gauge Southern Minor Railroad (Malaja Yuzhnaja Zheleznaja Doroga) founded in 1940 in Kharkiv city, is a second Children Railroad in the former Soviet Union — and the second one in the World. In reverse to the Western practice, Soviet Children railroads were not only entertainment places. The second and may be more important role was to be training centres for 'Mature' railways. It bringes a lot of joy and pride for children to carry out mature duties: to maintenance and to drive locomotives, to check tickets, to manage the train and the work of whole railroad.
As a result, Soviet Ralroads get young but well-trained, enthusiastic personnel.
Naturally, all railroad operations are carried out under the careful matures' control. Hard muscle duties, also dangerous and harmful works are fulfilled exclusively by matures.
The Southern Minor Railroad is 2.5 km long, it has 750mm gauge. It is placed in picturesque place of Kharkiv park-forest. The railroad operates with two five-coach trains and pair of diesel-electric locomotives.
Formerly it had in posession the rare and valuable museum piece of steam locomotive. But in 1990's it was sold in Hungary.
Children railroad is working at warm season, from April till October, at Saturdays, Sundays and State Holidays, in light day hours.

I had a tough time with this challenge....because although things appear narrow, the sometimes are not narrow as you grow closer....
this is a shot of the vineyards that line our freeway in Sonoma County. Beautiful place to live!
