BABY WALKERS CANADA - BABY WALKERS
Baby Walkers Canada - Normal Baby Names For Girls. Baby Walkers Canada
June Havoc June Havoc ( 1912 - 2010) Hollywood and Broadway star whose family life inspired the musical Gypsy Those who know the gorgeously gaudy Jule Styne/Stephen Sondheim Broadway musical Gypsy (1959) will remember the refrain of "my name is June, what's yours?" addressed to the audience by the curly-haired child performer. "Baby" June was based on June Havoc, who has died aged 97, and the show was inspired by her early days in US vaudeville with her "monstrous" stage mother and older sister Rose Louise, who became Gypsy Rose Lee, the famous stripper. "I think Gypsy was one of the most smashing shows I've seen in my life," Havoc once told me. "But very little to do with fact. My mother was not such a monster. Few parents who had a child who, at the age of two, stood on her toes and danced every time she heard music, could resist putting her forward. Particularly if the child was happy doing it. 'Stage mother' is such an old, flat description of a woman who is trying to give the child something that the child obviously wants and probably needs. Look at the wonderful life that has come out of my childhood. I wouldn't trade a minute of it." I got to know the warm and vibrant Havoc when she came over to London to perform her one-woman show, An Unexpected Evening With June Havoc, at the Donmar Warehouse in 1985. We continued to see each other in England and Connecticut, where she ran a donkey sanctuary. Every time we spoke, she revealed something new and "unexpected" about her past that I had not heard before nor found in her two fascinating autobiographies, Early Havoc (1959) and More Havoc (1980). She was born Ellen Evangeline Hovick in Vancouver, Canada, though the family moved to Seattle when she was still a baby. She made her professional debut, aged two, playing bits in silent film shorts. She remembered one film in which she had to cry in a courtroom. "Just before the take, mother told me that my beloved dog had been run over." By the age of five, she was a headliner on the Keith Orpheum Circuit in vaudeville, billed at first as Baby June and then as Dainty June, earning $1,500 a week. But in 1929, just turned 16, she ran away with one of the boys in the show to get married. The marriage did not last and she went back into vaudeville until, in early 1930s, hit by the Depression, vaudeville died. "But, I didn't die with it, although I was hungry enough," said Havoc, as she liked to call herself. She survived by participating in dance marathons, vividly evoked in her Broadway play Marathon '33 (1963), which she also directed. In 1936, aged 23, her child-star days behind her, Havoc started to appear in musical comedies on Broadway. Her big break came four years later as the night-club performer Gladys in the Rodgers and Hart hit Pal Joey, starring Gene Kelly. One critic wrote: "June Havoc, who has been Gypsy Rose Lee's sister so long she is sick of the classification, came into her own as a comedienne." Her success in Pal Joey, in which she had five songs, resulted in an invitation to Hollywood. She made her screen debut in Four Jacks and a Jill (1941), in which she played a band-singer with a gangster boyfriend, played by Jack Durant, her co-star in Pal Joey. The following year, in Sing Your Worries Away, she played a stripper, taking off her clothes and her sister. She had another smallish part in My Sister Eileen (1942), which starred Rosalind Russell, who would later play her mother in the screen version of Gypsy (1962). In the colourful Fox musical, Hello, Frisco, Hello (1943), she and the rotund comic Jack Oakie were a vaudevillian duo, singing Ragtime Cowboy Joe, and the title song with Alice Faye. She continued in supporting roles in No Time for Love (1943), starring Claudette Colbert, and in Brewster's Millions (1945), the funniest of the six screen versions of the play. Most of what she did was lightweight stuff until her role in Elia Kazan's Gentleman's Agreement (1947), in which she was very effective as Elaine Wales, a Jew who has hidden her origins out of convenience. She followed this with another drama, Intrigue (1947), which provided one of her best screen roles; she played Madame Baranoff, a blonde tiger-woman dressed in diamonds, the boss of a smuggling ring who is tracked down and made love to by George Raft. She then went on to support bigger female stars such as Gene Tierney, in The Iron Curtain (1948), and Betty Grable, in When My Baby Smiles at Me (1948), again providing low comedy with Oakie. But the parts were, on the whole, mediocre. "I never had a contract. If I had I wouldn't have been able to freelance all over the world. I'm a renegade. I wanted to have the freedom to accept a theatre job. I did 22 Broadway plays." Among her roles on stage in the 1940s were the title roles in Elmer Rice's Dream Girl, and Sadie Thompson in Rouben Mamoulian's production of Rain, based on Somerset 18.Freshmeparty(5)-Mummy dance! You wonder how warm it is outside? Well, listen up. Im Jim Metzner, and this is the Pulse of the Planet. Tom Walker is an entomologist at the University of Florida. He says that if you pay attention to the songs of crickets and katydids you can actually hear the temperature. The songs of crickets and katydids get slower at lower temperatures and they get faster at higher temperatures. Crickets and katydids don't maintain a constant body temperature. Their temperature essentially takes on whatever the environmental temperature is, and, it happens, the nerves and muscles have chemistry that is slower at cold temperatures than at warm temperatures. So, things go slow at low temperatures and fast at high temperatures. I have a snowy tree cricket and I'll play a song of a warm one, a hot one, and a cold one. And so we'll start off with the warm one. (Plays song) So here's a hot one. (Plays song) And finally here's the cold one. (Plays song) The snowy tree cricket sometimes called the thermometer cricket because it has a very predictable chirp rate relative to temperature. It's a very simple sort of relationship. For instance, if you count the number of chirps in 13 seconds and add 41 you get the Fahrenheit temperature - if you're in the eastern United States. On the West Coast the snowy tree cricket sings a little faster and there you count the number of chirps in 12 seconds and add 38. But, there's another snowy tree cricket on the West Coast, which is called Riley's Tree Cricket, and that one's quite slow, so you count the number of chirps in 21 seconds, and then add 38. Please visit our website and check out our new blog. Thats at pulseplanet, one word, pulseplanet.com. Pulse of the Planet is made possible by the National Science Foundation. Im Jim Metzner. Blonde Suzie - Baby Love and Grow Doll Pretend play is no longer all make-believe. When you feed and hug Love and Grow Suzie, she really grows from a baby to a toddler! Love and Grow Suzie "recognizes" her food, and tells little mommies what she wants to eat. Respond to her with lots of love and care, and she'll grow from 16 to 20 inches tall. Her hair even grows from short to long! And just like a real little girl, Suzie loves to sing songs and play games. When you want to start the fun all over again, Love and Grow Suzie reverts back to a 16" baby doll. Requires 4 "C" batteries, not included. You’ve come a long way, babydoll! Once upon a time, the most a doll could do was open and close her eyes. Welcome to a brand new day! Suzie (rosy-cheeked, blonde-haired, blue-eyed…some things never change) starts out as a baby, but with plenty of TLC actually grows into a toddler. Not only does she grow three or four inches, but she gets smarter and more verbal, too. Every time her "mommy" says her name, hugs her, changes her diaper, plays peek-a-boo, or gives her a bottle, Suzie recognizes the care and begins to grow. Eventually, she’s a big girl who can talk (not just babble), sing songs, use the potty, giggle when tickled, guess what’s in her hand, use a sippy cup, and lots more. A switch on her back enables her to go from baby to toddler (or vice versa) immediately, if patience is not one of your virtues. Suzie comes with a pile of accessories, including several outfits (for baby and for toddler), diaper, birth certificate, pacifier, blanket, baby food jar, dishes, utensils, growth chart, potty chair, hair brush, and hair extensions. Requires four "C" batteries (not included).--Emilie Coulter (8) Teeth and more teeth I forget what animal this jaw is from. I think it's a rabbit. But I was fascinated by the exterior teeth and then more teeth hiding above them. But based on another jaw we saw, I think this is sort of what humans are like before their baby teeth have fallen out and adult teeth have grown in (I guess I'd always thought the adult teeth sort of grew inside our mouth. I didn't realize they were just waiting their the whole time). Also, a sharks jaw is wicked cool. Almost like a rotating conveyor belt of sharp teeth. Baby Boy wearing "teeth growing" necklace The necklace that this baby boy is wearing is very common in West Africa. Though the majority of the population is Muslim, they still mix their traditional ancestral beliefs into their every day lives. This necklace is believed to ensure that the baby's teeth grow in quickly, and are seen on most small children in Guinea. baby teeth growing WallMonkeys wall graphics are printed on the highest quality re-positionable, self-adhesive fabric paper. I was irritated that the weather was slowing us down again. We were all huddled under a 12x12 pop-up awning when sunlight hit the back of my neck and I knew something wonderful was about to happen. I grabbed a still camera and went running across the lawn, one of my assistants dutifully chasing me with an umbrella. This photograph was not enhanced in any way. The aura on the monument is from the sun's reflection, diffused by the rain. The sun and the rainbow are just as they appeared for a few brief moments on that beautiful summer evening. The Joseph Smith Birthplace is one of my favorite places in the world, and my favorite LDS Church History site. I was born, raised, and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in New England. My mother was born and raised in Windsor County, Vermont, just down the road from Sharon, so this area has added meaning for me. But the most important thing for me about this picture is that I know that Joseph Smith is a prophet of God. Every time I look at this image, I remember one of the great things of God: His Prophet of the Restoration. I also believe that the Lord put us there that day for a reason. It seems to me that the Heavens are remembering the Prophet Joseph that day as well. The clouds broke, and gave us a brighter day. So it was with the dark clouds of apostasy, which began to break on 23 December, 1805 as a baby was born on this site who would usher in the Brighter Day of the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ. John P. Starrs starrman.com BOOK OF HOURS LEAF Ref 25verso Madonna and Child detail MINIATURE OF MADONNA AND CHILD The Virgin Mary standing holding, and looking lovingly at, the baby Jesus in front of a golden oval sun which is bursting forth with golden rays in a dark blue sky and giving darker blue clouds a “golden lining”. The Virgin wears a pale blue/grey dress and bright blue cape and Jesus a pink robe. The use of several colours to create the delicate features and the use of gold cross-hatching on the clothing and the hair results in a miniature of great charm and quality. A border in gold and very deep red surrounds the miniature. It measures 41mm x 37mm (1 5/8ins. X 1 4/10ins.). In the top right hand corner is the illuminated initial (liquid gold on deep red) that begins the “Obsecro te”. According to the Golden Legend, the vision known as the Ara Coeli occurred when the Emperor Augustus had reached the pinnacle of his power and was planning to establish himself as a god. Before initiating his own cult, Augustus consulted the Tiburian Sibyl who announced to him the birth of a child, the Christ, who would surpass him in power. Augustus promptly renounced his pretensions and worshipped the Virgin and Child who appeared to him against the background of the sun. bright baby book “Bright’s Passage shines with a compressed lyricism that recalls Ray Bradbury in his prime…This is the work of a gifted novelist…” – Stephen King, The New York Times Book Review Josh Ritter’s first novel is a wondrous, suspenseful, and uniquely affecting story of the journey taken by a father and his infant son. Henry Bright is newly returned to West Virginia from the battlefields of the First World War. Grief struck by the death of his young wife and unsure of how to care for the infant son she left behind, Bright is soon confronted by the destruction of the only home he’s ever known. His only hope for safety is the angel who has followed him to Appalachia from the trenches of France and who now promises to protect him and his son. Together, Bright and his newborn, along with a cantankerous goat and the angel guiding them, make their way through a landscape ravaged by forest fire toward an uncertain salvation, haunted by the abiding nightmare of his experiences in the war and shadowed by his dead wife’s father, the Colonel, and his two brutal sons. At times harrowing, at times funny, and always possessed by the sheer gorgeousness and unique imagination that have made Josh Ritter’s songs beloved to so many, this is the debut of a virtuoso fiction writer. A Letter from Author Josh Ritter © Marcelo Biglia The central premise of Bright’s Passage is that an angel has followed young Henry Bright home from the senseless carnage of the First World War. The book follows Bright during three significant periods in his life, braiding the scenes together finally to portray a young man attempting to meet the greatest challenge of his life: returning home. The angel, perhaps a capricious refugee from the painted ceiling of a shelled French church, perhaps the dream-like manifestation of Henry Bright’s own shell-shocked mind, nevertheless takes up residence in Henry’s horse, and it is through their time with one another and the journey they take together that Bright attempts to find peace, not simply for himself, but if the angel is correct, for the entire world. War always brims with bloody inscrutability, but the First World War mated the ferocious absurdity of human nature with unprecedented leaps of technological capability to birth a new and monstrous kind of world-striding warfare that for the first time in history seemed capable of wiping away whole civilizations. It was this conflict--the seeming ability of man to spin the world and yet just as easily be spun by it--that drew me to the time period surrounding the First World War, and that gave me my first glimpse of Henry Bright, a man caught up in a whirlwind he is unable to understand or control. Though continuously pestered by the angel, upon returning home to West Virginia Henry attempts to put the abattoir of his time in France behind him by marrying his childhood friend Rachel and having a baby with her. When Rachel dies in childbirth however, Henry finds himself beset by new and present vagaries even as he attempts to understand the ones he has already come through. A wildfire, Rachel’s vengeful family, and his struggle to protect his newborn son from both now drive Henry Bright, his horse, his goat and his tiny infant into the wilderness in a desperate attempt to finally find peace. Ultimately, Bright’s Passage is about a man who has come home from war only to suspect that perhaps he has not yet returned from it. HOW TO GIVE A BABY UP FOR ADOPTION : BEST BABY LEARNING TOYS How To Give A Baby Up For Adoption
Toddler Adoption: The Weaver's Craft "Toddler Adoption" looks at the unique joys and challenges of adopting and parenting a toddler. When a child aged is adopted between the ages of 12 to 36 months, they often show signs of cognitive and emotional immaturity, which can cause behavioral and relational issues. This book offers support and practical tools to help parents prepare for and support the toddler's transition between the familiar environment of their biological parent's home or foster home to a new and unfamiliar one, and considers the issues that arise at different developmental stages. It highlights the challenges that parents are likely to encounter, but also gives positive guidance on how to overcome them. Written by a specialist in children's development who is also an adoptive parent herself, this fully revised and updated edition of the go-to-source on adopting toddlers is essential reading for both parents and professionals working with adoptive families. (15) My adoption: the first step Me: So tell me how you started the search for a third child. Mom: OK, it took about two years for Bobby's adoption to become final. Then I sent this letter to Angel Guardian to apply for another baby. And they sent us the forms, and began the process. At some point, in the late summer or early fall of 1970, we were told there was a shortage of adoptable infants because of the pill and abortion being legal in New York state. And they asked us if we would consider an interracial or handicapped child. We decided to think about getting a child with a handicap. Then, in the middle of December, we were asked to take a little girl, one only three months younger than Bobby. In effect, they would've been almost like twins. She had a hip problem. But when I saw her picture, I felt she was meant for me because she was what I imagined what my daughter would look like. We did not know the extent of her hip problem. I wanted her, and Daddy was more cautious, and thought it was too much of a responsibility to take on. So we compromised and decided I would talk to my pediatrician — I'm trying to remember who he was, it wasn't Dr. Axelrod — and that whatever he said would have a great deal of weight in our decision. When I spoke with him, he sat me down and told me he was dead set against it. He said if it was my first baby, he would've been thrilled to help me. But I had two other children, and the attention needed to care for this girl would take away from their quality of life and their care. He went on further to explain that if this was my own baby, we would discovered the problem very early on. But since this baby was in a foster home, most likely this problem went undiagnosed for some time, which made it much worse — it was the kind of problem that was correctable when caught at a young age. He asked me to call the orphanage and give him permission to speak to the nuns to find out more about the girl's condition. And the nuns got upset, and said they would not speak to a doctor, because I had to take the baby on faith. Me: You know, honestly...that's kind of fucked up. Mom: It is. Well, when I disagreed with them — respectfully, of course — they told me that if this was my natural baby, I would have no control over what she was born with. And I countered that if she was born to me, I would've caught her problem at any early age. But they were adamant that there would be no medical records to share with a doctor. So in good conscience, and bearing in mind what the doctor told me, I had to weigh the effects the adoption would have on Bobby and Tommy. And if the problem was as bad as the doctor thought, there would be many trips into Manhattan for all the surgeries she would need — at the time, there were no Long Island hospitals that performed this kind of surgery. So Daddy and I decided against the adoption. It was one of the hardest and most hurtful decisions I've made in my life. And to this day, I still remember her, every middle of December. And it was almost as if a child died, to me. I actually... Me: I'm getting emotional right now. Mom: I'm getting emotional, too. It was really like losing a child. franklin, roxy, max and bubby HI my name is tricia gisewhite and this photo is my crew of 4 beautiful fur babies from left to right is chocolate lab Franklin who is 9.5yo and still looking fantastic thanks to petco and natural balance he was given to me via friend who wanted a better life for him then where he was at. Next is Roxy, she is my other senior who is 8.5 yo and a black lab/pitbull adopted outside of the el cajon petco when she was only 3 months old. The lil guy in the middle is Max he is 2.5 an aussie/Doberman mix and was found at about 3 months skinny on the side of the road and is the sweetest love bug you could ever meet. Last but not least is my big lovin Bubby a 5yo German Shephard /chow mix and has an all blackish purple tongue and was found at about 6 months on the side of the road skinny and a rope tied around his neck and is now a happy 90lbs. I love sharing their stories with people especially because I have breeds, although mixed, that people tend to think negatively about and I let them know the breed does not define the dog. When people meet my dogs it is hard not to smile and be taken in by all the love they have to give and it throws them off that 300lbs of dog all fit on a queen size bed at night. My best friend and I have dodged more cars, stopped traffic and rescued more dogs then we can keep track of and would not have it any other way. My best friend kevin also has 3 cocker spaniels, lady his lil girl was adopted outside of petco in el cajon after the passing of his 15yo cocker spaniel and he has had her for 8years and his lil boy was adopted from a local animal shelter. We try to advocate adoption and share our stories as much as we can after I found a stray on the side of the road 6 months ago not taken care of at all missing teeth, skinny and matted he let me scoop him up I called into work that night and brought him home. I was very fortunate through a friend of a friend to be introduced to SPOT organization in Oceanside ca who took Charlie (AKA stray pup) in and after much needed care was rehomed to a great las vegas home. Spot has used the Petco unleashed venue to help rehome other pets and I made them “ADOPT ME” vests and matching people aprons to help them stand out at the events. So thats my adoption stories and how the love of animals through adoption have impacted my life and still keep on giving!!!! Thanks and much love petco!!! how to give a baby up for adoption "This book calls attention to the pressing issues of abandoned baby girls in China, the result of a combination of historical and cultural prejudices against women and the current draconian, one-child policy. The Lost Daughters of China is an evocative memoir that will not only attract parents or would-be parents of Chinese baby girls but will touch the hearts of us all." (Chicago Tribune) Proclaimed an instant classic upon its hardcover publication, The Lost Daughters of China is at once compelling and informative. Journalist Karin Evans tells the story of adopting her daughter, Kelly, who was once one of the hundreds of thousands of infant girls who wait for parents in orphanages all over China. Weaving her personal account with extensive research, Evans investigates the conditions that have led to generations of abandoned Chinese girls and a legacy of lost women. With a new epilogue added for the paperback edition, this book will appeal to anyone interested in China and in the emotional ties that connect people regardless of genes or culture. In the words of bestselling novelist Amy Tan, The Lost Daughters of China is "not only an evocative memoir on East-West adoption but also a bridge to East-West understanding of human rights in China." The Lost Daughters of China is that rare book that can be many things to different people. Part memoir, part travelogue, part East-West cultural commentary, and part adoption how-to, Karin Evans's book is greater than the sum of its parts. Evans weaves together her experience of adopting a Chinese infant with observations about Chinese women's history and that country's restrictive, if unevenly enforced, reproductive policies. She and her husband adopted Kelly Xiao Yu in 1997, and anyone curious about adopting from a Chinese orphanage--which houses girls and disabled boys--will learn about the mechanics and the emotional freight of the two-year process. Borrowing an image from Chinese folklore, Evans conveys herself, her husband, and their daughter as tethered by a red string that yoked them across an ocean and an equally awesome cultural divide. The elegant prose is spiced with bits of ironic cultural dissonance. A discount shopper, Evans "felt more than a little strange buying China-made [baby] clothes with which to bundle up a tiny baby, one of China's own, and bring her home." On a bus tour through southern China, she is one of a "bunch of Americans with Chinese infants singing 'Que Sera Sera' in the middle of a sea of traffic. Will she be happy? Will she be rich?" To suddenly hear Doris Day over the horns of a Kowloon traffic jam is heady stuff indeed. The Lost Daughters of China is at its best when describing Evans's tally of emotional loss and gain. At one point the bureaucratic adoption process is unaccountably delayed, but her father dies during that time and she's able to sit by his bedside. The most mysterious example of this emotional calculus is Kelly's birth mother. Evans invents many plausible scenarios that caused this unknown woman to abandon her three-month-old daughter at a market. These incomplete, necessarily provisional stories help give a face to the larger cultural processes that compel new parents to abandon 1.7 million girl babies annually. The stuff of headlines--human rights, infanticide, rural and urban poverty--is rendered personally relevant in Evans's compelling book. --Kathi Inman Berens See also: adoption baby shower invitation real baby toys japanese baby products free knitted baby patterns baby alive games for free baby platypus pictures symptoms of whooping cough in baby baby girl christmas dresses gerber baby shirt |

This pains me, because although I hear cold showers are good for you, my body can not even stand it when it's room temperature! And the mornings are the worst too.. you already don't want to get out of bed because you are tired. And of course it is absolutely freezing outside of the covers. But then let's throw some cold water into the mix. Not a fun way to start off the day! I was exhausted during classes and everything seemed to go by really slowly. Then I got a call from Mark saying that his baby niece, "Kate," was in the hospital!!! As soon as I got out of class, Mark and I went to High Point hospital to see her. She had something like a seizure and everyone believed it was a reaction to some shots she had had the day before. Anyway, they did some testing on her and hopefully they will find out if it was from the shots, or if it is something more serious. I know she will be alright, and she is in my prayers! The whole day, even at the hospital, I just felt very weak and tired. So later on, I got to take a pretty long nap, which was lovely. And now I am back home getting ready to do a ton more homework. :( I hate homework... I need more sleep! I love little Kate, I hope she is alright. I love love love my Mark and I am so proud of him for getting his new job. I just don't want him to go! <3 20/365 Welcome to your family my son He was born Friday. It was definitely an emotional day for me. Leilani had a high fever that night so I stayed up until 5 am keeping her fever down. We were planning to bring her to the doctor that morning when they open. My wife came into the room crying at 7 am and we rushed to the hospital. Our baby was born 927 am. And we were both filled with joy. He was the biggest of all our children. 9 lbs 5 oz and 21 inches. My wife didnt do to well soon after. My happiness turned into fear. Thank God she finally did get over her fever and bleeding under control that night. In the mean time, Leilani's temperature soared. Thank you my friend and family for watching over her. All is fine now. The children are overwhelmed with joy as we went home today with our new addition. Leilani is getting use to not being the youngest one. (I told her she is still my only baby girl.) UNHCR News Story: 1 Refugee Without Hope: Canada offers new life to desperate refugee Pakistani refugee Muhammmed Zakaria handing over his family's passports to UNHCR's Severine Weber to process them for resettlement. They left China for Canada in May. UNHCR/K. McKinsey / April 2011 1 Refugee Without Hope: Canada offers new life to desperate refugee YANJIAO, China, June 15 (UNHCR) – Not many people can remember precisely what they were doing at 9:45 on Tuesday, March 1. Muhammmed Zakaria can: it was the first time in his life he was truly happy, the moment he got a phone call that transformed his life. At the other end of the line was Severine Weber, UNHCR associate field officer in Beijing, telling the Pakistani refugee that seven long years of loneliness and despair were over and that he and four of his closest relatives were about to restart their lives in Canada. As if in a dream, the 32-year-old bachelor walked back to the flat he shares with his parents and two younger sisters here, 45 km east of the Chinese capital, Beijing. When his mother opened the door, Zakaria burst into sobs and she feared that – for the fifth time – his resettlement application had been turned down. Instead it was "happiness I had never had before, the biggest happiness in my life," Zakaria said before he and his family left last month for Toronto, Canada, where two married sisters live. "It's kind of a miracle." Persecuted from childhood as a member of Pakistan's Ahmadi religious minority, Zakaria credited "first of all, God," and said his chance for a fresh start showed that "UNHCR's efforts and (our) prayers all came together." In early 2004, Zakaria's family sent just him – the only son in a family with four daughters – to China after receiving death threats. He applied for asylum at UNHCR's Beijing office and received refugee status two months later. Although China has acceded to the 1951 Refugee Convention, refugees are unable to settle permanently here, so the usual solution is for them to be resettled in third countries, a process that can take years. Zakaria was grateful to China for giving him a safe haven, but he says there were many despondent moments. A near brush with deportation – when he and nine others were saved by UNHCR intervention – left him traumatized for two years. Alone, cut off from his family and religious community, he felt alienated from Chinese people who, he said, do not really understand who refugees are. An international Christian church eventually provided his entree into Chinese society, offering him the opportunity to do volunteer work renovating an orphanage in Beijing. For a year and a half, this trained computer scientist did manual labour to make life better for Chinese babies and children. He later volunteered at a Chinese kindergarten in Beijing. Zakaria taught English – he speaks five languages – and the children taught him Chinese, he says with a laugh. With his outgoing personality and fluent English, he became an informal leader for some 60 Ahmadi refugees living near the Chinese capital. He also volunteered as an interpreter and translator at UNHCR. But after a lifetime of persecution, he did not always feel at ease in China. In 2008, UNHCR managed to find new homes abroad for a large number of refugees ahead of the Olympic Games. When Zakaria was not accepted by any country, he hit rock bottom and contemplated suicide. "Think of how it feels," he said quietly. "All your friends are going for resettlement - the ones who made me part of their family and served me nice food because they knew I had stomach problems. So I was all alone again. People who were here for 10 years got resettled, so why couldn't I go?" But he wasn't alone – two other refugees, seeing he was suicidal, stayed by his side and nursed him through his lowest point. But his faith was shaken, and when family arrived in 2009, his father was horrified at the Zakaria he found. "I sent my son here to be safe, not away from God," said his father. "I realized what he must have been through. We helped him build his belief again and are glad today he is back to his normal state." The UN refugee agency believes that 1 Refugee Without Hope is Too Many. Zakaria was fortunate to have the support of his family and UNHCR's Weber. She took the unusual step of asking Canada to take a second look when she felt new facts had made his case for resettlement more convincing. "UNHCR's job is not only to protect refugees, but to give them a solution," she said. "That means the chance to live a normal life." Zakaria is someone who particularly touched her: "He was born the same year as me. He is exactly two months younger, but has gone through so much more. It makes me think, why is he a refugee and I a UNHCR officer. Could it not be the reverse?" As for Zakaria, he questioned why many host countries don't allow refugees to work when they have much to contribute and don't wan 500 word essay: vis129f The feature of human beings which separates us from other animals is culture. Biology can tell us that we need nourishment but it is culture that tells us what is appropriate to eat and what is not. The semantics of language of specific societies also tell a lot about a culture – some terms have specific connotations for the culture to want to emphasize or de-emphasize certain aspects of the society. Just as in the case of visualizing cultural analytics, it shows how the culture of art history is trying to translate art through a new form of language. On one level, this is a speaking to the art community, and maybe the society as a whole, has taken. One aspect of trying to analyze art pieces through means of graphs is to get information in an instantaneously. This is a clear reflection of our Information Society and the need to be as efficient as possible. A characteristic of Western society since the Industrial Revolution occurred in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Secondly, cultural analytics shows the importance of communicating information through means of visual aid rather than verbal/written language. There are no barriers of culture or semantics to exclude people from understanding, or going through the trouble of translating essays into different languages. By using graphs, it is a new form of analyzing culture for practically everyone to understand and make their own conclusions of. It is like a new art form in itself: one that can stand as a representation of an accumulation of past great works. For example, the conclusions I made from my graphs are as follows: In my “Variation in StDev Saturation Over Time in Denis' Paintings from 1889-1915” graph (FIG. A) depicting the change of standard deviation over time in Denis' paintings between 1889-1915. Standard Deviation can be defined as the square root of the variance between values. Saturation refers to the dominance of hue in the color. Therefore, the graph depicts the deviation of the saturation values between each set of paintings. From the graph, we can see that there are higher saturation values in the beginning (1889) and decrease as time goes by. And with this information I was able to apply past art historical concepts to reasons to the regression: Then in the “This is the saturation data for Maurice Denis that Prof. Manovich gave to us. The plot is kind of all over the place, but there does seem to be a linear regression as time goes by - meaning that the intensity of color in his paintings decreased as the years went by. This is definitely clear when comparing the 1889_1_Denis.jpg with the 1905_2_Denis.jpg file. A possible explanation for this is in the beginning, his paintings were very saturated because in the beginning his art focused on Christian-oriented art. He was very religious and may have used stronger oclors to convey the kind of meaning he felt towards his faith. In this case were very strong (we can see this in his vibrant painting of the crucifixion in 1890_1_Denis.jpg). The intensity of colors have decreased sometime after 1893-1896 because he is focusing on these women in white. I am still trying to find out what they are, but they seem to be in a sort of ritual - meaning that this is a time for celebration and festivities. As the saturation in the paintings decrease his subject matter tends to focus more and more on females. Maybe another reflection of his feelings towards his painting topics. Another example of an art historical analysis of the graphs is in the “Number of nude Figures in Caravaggio and Denis’ Paintings Over Time” (FIG B), the conclusions I made from my graphs are as follows: There is a pattern between Caravaggio's and Denis’ paintings are that Caravaggio has many more nude figures than in. This may be because in the 1600s many artists' primary art subjects were based on the Renaissance, the nude remained an essential focus of Western art. Whether embracing or refashioning classical ideals, artists from the seventeenth century to the present have privileged the nude form and made it an endlessly compelling means of creative expression. In Baroque art (during Caravaggio's time), the continuing fascination with classical antiquity pressed artists to renew their approach to the nude and the antique tradition. However Denis has much fewer nude figures because he was more interested in modest-appearing women and scenery. Two of the 4 times there are nude women in his paintings are of a woman breast-feeding a child, the third case has Jesus Christ barely draped in cloth, and the fourth scenario is of 2 seems to be vaguely similar to Manet's Luncheon painting. So Denis may have been drawing the1891_2_Denis.jpg as product of inspiration. And with this information I was able to apply past art historical concepts to reasons for the distinct differences: Not only did artists during the Baroque age focus on the nude to reaffirm already praised ideals in mythological art. n the eighteenth an See also: cheap baby doll clothes baby names that mean joy online printable baby shower invitations favors for a baby shower modern safari baby bedding babys dream kathryn crib baby kids company baby walker online alice in wonderland baby nursery |
