Stand Bi Market circa 1980
Our friend Helena Enskog came for a visit and upon returning home to Sweden sent us this handmade postcard from a photo she took of our apartment building in the Inner Sunset. That's me sitting cross-legged up there in the bedroom window of our third floor walkup, camera hanging 'round my neck even then. I guess I was taking photos of Helena taking photos. We lived for seven years above the Stand Bi Market. Up where you see the street begin to curve is where Judah Street becomes Parnassus Avenue, and those faint buildings on the rise are UCSF. I worked at the Medical Center there for eight years, but funily enough that was only after we had moved to a little cottage all the way across the Bay. Helena, a nurse from Sweden, lived in California for a year or so with my husband and a group of about 30 people in a communal house before he moved to SF.
