67/100 - Pete & Roslin
Today's strangers were another unexpected yet very pleasant find. Once again my eyes were drawn to the presence of another camera, yet little did I know I was going to find much more than just a man with a camera.
I casually commented on Pete's upside-down camera as he passed, guessing that the familiar LCD cover and thick kit lens meant it was a D90 just as my own. Pete confirmed that I had indeed identified his camera and after sharing a short photography geek moment between our two cameras (I am terribly envious that he has a Rolleiflex), I asked if Pete and his wife Roslin would like to take part in my project.
It turns out that Pete and Roslin were only in Bloomington on their road trip to see all the changing colors of fall. They started by flying into North Carolina, renting a car and then drove all the way up to the Canadian border, back down to the Indiana and Illinois area and then will finish their trip in Chicago. Pete obtained his graduate degree from U of Chicago and has not been on campus for quite a while, which prompted this trip in the first place.
Pete, even in his youthful state, has been retired for a decade already. In his professional years, he was a software designer. He would design whatever necessary items for companies, earn stock with the company and after a while decided to cash out. He started off designing war game programs during the cold war in order to calculate the economic implications or the recovery analysis of a nuclear attack. Such a design would have made for the perfect Ph.D. dissertation if it hadn't been classified at the time. Later on, he designed software robots for the purpose of quality control calculations for software. Such software robots were abnormally advanced tools as a human analyst could perform two hundred tests in a standard working day, whereas a single one of his software robots could perform up to one million tests in a twenty-four hour period. Calling Pete's career "lucrative" is an understatement at best.
Roslin was equally as remarkable in her corporate career although she attempted to hide it under humility until I asked Pete to inform me of her achievements. Born in China during the second world war, her family escaped the Japanese invasion and arrived in the US as refugees. As adults, their culture dictated that they become financially focused individuals. She and her siblings were exactly that case. Roslin started her career in the rehabilitation of upscale hotels, managing $50,000,000 renovation projects and then moved into managing the construction of "turn-key" and "just-in-time-inventory" systems. Upon asking for clarification, I found out that turn-key systems are fully developed systems that are brought to 100% completion and effectively the "key" to a fully-functional system was handed over to the client. The example given to me was that if a Hawaii police department wished to have a radio system that would cover a span of the islands, her company would build a microwave-emitting system on top of a mountain, developing everything from the power systems, the software, equipment, etc. Additionally, she was also managing the creation of these "just-in-time-inventories" which completely eliminated the need for storage warehouses. These systems would ensure that the products would arrive exactly when needed, eliminating all the costs of storage and inventory. Roslin was already managing the creation of such systems before prestigious universities like MIT or Harvard had even thought to start developing research on the topic. In retirement Roslin has taken up painting such things as their little traveling companion, Goliath, the yorkie peeking his head out of the bag in the photo.
So as it is, these two gifted professionals now enjoy the retired life living aboard a 100" tugboat in Washington State. Originally built for the army in 1945, the vessel was refurbished as a personal yacht. According to Pete, the boat has 4 cabins (bedrooms), 3 heads (bathrooms), a fireplace, a dining table that seats 8 people, and even carries four other boats on board. On top of the tugboat there is a 14" sailboat hoisted down into the water by crane, while the tug also houses a 8" outboard fishing boat, an 8" mini-sail boat and a 12" life-raft. Pete said that he would send me a photo of his vessel so I should shortly have an image to go with such an incredible story.
Even with so much boat to manage between the two of them, Pete maintains the tugboat all by himself. Although he grew up with nothing but motor-less vessels, they ended up with a motorized boat instead. Upon purchasing the tug from an army surveyor in Newport Beach, California, he asked Pete, "do you know what you're getting into?" Roslin laughed about a time where the black-water tank backed up and the only one to fix it was Pete. Upon completion of the task she asked him if he had succeeded in fixing th

Humanity is on the cusp of an exciting longevity revolution. The first person to live to 150 years has probably already been born. What will your life look like when you live to be over 100? Will you be healthy? Will your marriage need a sunset clause? How long will you have to work? Will you finish one career at sixty-five only to go back to school to learn a new one? And then, will you be happily working for another sixty years? Maybe you’ll be a parent to a newborn and a grandparent at the same time. Will the world become overpopulated? And how will living longer affect your finances, your family life, and your views on religion and the afterlife? In 100 Plus, futurist Sonia Arrison takes us on an eye-opening journey to the future at our doorsteps, where science and technology are beginning to radically change life as we know it. She introduces us to the people transforming our lives: the brilliant scientists and genius inventors and the billionaires who fund their work. The astonishing advances to extend our lives—and good health—are almost here. In the very near future fresh organs for transplants will be grown in laboratories, cloned stem cells will bring previously unstoppable diseases to their knees, and living past 100 will be the rule, not the exception. Sonia Arrison brings over a decade of experience researching and writing about cutting-edge advances in science and technology to 100 Plus, painting a vivid picture of a future that only recently seemed like science fiction, but now is very real. 100 Plus is the first book to give readers a comprehensive understanding of how life-extending discoveries will change our social and economic worlds. This illuminating and indispensable text will help us navigate the thrilling journey of life beyond 100 years.
