Bike Brake Pad

bike brake pad

    bike brake
  • Bicycle brake systems are used to slow down or stop a bicycle. There have been various types of brakes used throughout history, and several are still in use today. The three main types are: rim brakes, disc brakes, and drum brakes.

    pad
  • Travel along (a road or route) on foot

  • Walk with steady steps making a soft dull sound

  • embroider: add details to

  • slog: walk heavily and firmly, as when weary, or through mud; "Mules plodded in a circle around a grindstone"

  • a number of sheets of paper fastened together along one edge

New brake pads and straddle cables

New brake pads and straddle cables

My local bike shop had a pair of new genuine Dia-Compe straddle wires ($1 each) and these great Delta "Aztec-2" brake pads (only $10 for a set of 4) so now this is a very smooth riding and also a very safe bike. These particular pads are among the best on the market (in my experience).

During my ride today I noticed a big difference in braking efficiency. What had been "spongy" with the original worn pads is now extremely solid.

Those are inexpensive but completely new CycloPro tires which came with the bike. Size is 27 x 1-1/8" and they look very nice on this bike. Schrader valves were typical on most all 27" rims in the US market (not sure about Great Britain). I'll probably rebuild the wheels to 700c since I already have the same model 58 Super Champion rims with the correct spoke holes in that size too. But no rush on that. I would do it now if I were planning a long trip, but just around town there is no need.

These calipers are stamped with an actual date: 12 85 ... I have now checked, and unseen beneath the mounting bolt assembly for the brake pad post there is a vertical adjustment slot. This means the pads can indeed slide down to accommodate the 4 mm. smaller radius of the 700c rims.

S3X hub

S3X hub

Overall view of the S3X hub - it's about the same size as a 'regular' AW3, and even inherits the toggle/indicator chain actuation mechanism. Compared to the 'rotating collar' arrangement on, say, the Shimano Nexus hub gear, this is a bit of an anachronism. It works, though.

I think they really screwed up with the name though - put "s3x spares" into Google and you'll see what I mean.

Day 150: Bike Moves Make Everything Better

Day 150: Bike Moves Make Everything Better

My alarm went off at 7 AM, and I hit the snooze a few times, assuming I'd be out of bed at 7:45 at the latest. Next thing I knew, I was thinking: it is far too bright in here. And there I was, at 9AM, still lying in my bed.

Didn't get into work until 10AM, and had a day filled with frustration and hard times getting small tasks done. Had to spin by REI at noon to grab some things for bike camping, and ran into lots of friends all doing the same thing.

I left work at 5 for Ed's bike move, which started with delicious voodoo donuts (including a whole box of vegan). About 20 people showed up to move Ed's stuff 8 miles by bicycle. After unloading, we all hung around to munch on delicious food and drink beer. Somehow, it was suddenly 9PM and Theo and I hadn't bought food for bike camping yet. We skidaddled out of there.

Tomorrow, bike camping at Bagby Hot Springs. Yay!

DURHAM TEES VALLEY AIRPORT

DURHAM TEES VALLEY AIRPORT

I left home at 10.30 am on Friday 23/07/2010 on a bike ride to Ingleton to meet up with fellow member of the Backpacker's Club, Geoff Boyling for a bit of walking and socialising. I need to check out the local campsites prior to my next "big trip" a descent of Gaping Gill with the Online Fellwalking Club, after which I want to bike to Fort William for an ascent of Ben Nevis. As a continuous self-propelled journey from the deepest point in the UK to the highest I'm pretty sure this hasn't been done before, and whether or not I'm up to it is a very good question!..

This shot is of my local airport the ugly named "Durham Tees Valley Airport" Local Authorities seem to have a gift of originating obtuse titles for airports, "East Midlands Airport" is another. A recent consultation exercise in our area has confirmed that everyone around here thinks of the area as simple, descriptive and accurate "Teesside" We are Tynesiders, Wearsiders and Teessiders, so I suppose we should be grateful to avoid being known as "The Three Rivers Airport"!

Tima's Wig Restyled

Tima's Wig Restyled

This wig almost didn't survive, let me tell you.

After my initial attempt to soften the curls and make the wig look less cheap overall, I ended up with a frizzy mess. Knowing very well that my Tima cosplay would be finito if I couldn't salvage it (because I had no budget to get a new wig), I did some research online and found a great method via "Jeez Louise": spritzing water and leave-in conditioner on the hair before treating it with a curling iron on the lowest possible heat setting. All I had was a straight iron, but with a lot of brushing and hair curlers and patience, it came out even better than I thought it would.

It doesn't display very well since it's balancing on an exercise bike instead of a proper wig head, but the bottom does have some 'floof' to it.

*hears people asking wtf is floof*

The Politicians Arrive At dublin Castle To Hear The Final Result

The Politicians Arrive At dublin Castle To Hear The Final Result

Minister Eamon Ryan was first elected to Dail Eireann in 2002. Prior to his appointment as Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, he was the Green Party spokesperson for Transport and Enterprise, Trade and Employment and opposition convenor on the Joint Oireachtas Committee for Communication, Marine and Natural Resources.
Before he was elected to the Dail he set up and ran two businesses, Irish Cycling Safaris and Belfield Bike shop. He was an active member and chairman of the Dublin Cycling Campaign, and from 1995 to 2002 he served on the Advisory Committee of the Dublin Transport Office.
Eamon is married to the writer Victoria White and they have four young children.

Senator Deirdre de Burca is originally from Loughlinstown, County Dublin. She attended Cabinteely Community School en then progressed to Carysfort Teacher Training College, Blackrock where she trained as a Primary School Teacher. She taught for three years and then returned to college to study psychology at UCD. She then worked with Rehab for over ten years as a psychologist and was a Rehabilitation Psychologist in Rehab’s vocational training centres for people with disabilities. Deirdre established the Camus community-based rehabilitation programme for young people who have experienced their first serious mental health difficulties. She also helped to set up Minds Matter, one of Ireland’s first patient-led groups which set out to lobby for reforms in the mental health services. She is a member of a wide range of interest groups including An Taisce, the Wicklow Planning Alliance, the Foundation for Sustainable Economics (Feasta), Sustainable Communities Ireland and the Peace & Neutrality Alliance.
Deirdre was first elected to Wicklow County Council in 1999. She was re-elected with a greatly increased mandate in the Local Elections of 2004, and was also one of the three Green Party Councillors to be elected onto Bray Town Council for the first time. Deirdre built a reputation for being a hard worker who is committed to public service over the 8-year period she spent as a local councillor. She was particularly interested in planning and waste management issues and worked closely with communities around County Wicklow to try to ensure that Local Development Plans for their areas met the real needs of these communities.
Deirdre achieved prominence during the drafting of the 2006-2011 Wicklow County Development Plan because she publicly challenged a number of late-night controversial zonings that were adopted by her fellow councillors. These re-zonings were the subject of much negative attention from the national media at the time. The majority of these re-zonings were subsequently withdrawn or significantly modified by the council.
Deirdre also legally challenged a decision of Wicklow County Council in February 2001. Following the total privatisation of the County’s waste collection services by Wicklow County Council in the face of massive public opposition. Deirdre received leave from the High Court to judicially review this decision. She was not successful in being granted the reliefs she sought. However, she did not have costs awarded against her as the judge in question ruled that her case had raised a number of important legal points.
Deirdre ran as a Green Party General Election candidate in Wicklow for the second time in June 2007. She achieved 7% of the vote, but failed to secure one of the five Dail seats in the County. In August 2007 Deirdre was nominated to Seanad Eireann by Taoiseach Bertie Ahern following the Green Party’s entry into Government with Fianna Fail and the Progressive Democrats.
Deirdre is currently a member of the Green Party’s Parliamentary Party and is also a very active member of Seanad Eireann. She is her party’s spokesperson on European Affairs, Health & Children, and Defence. She has played a prominent role in explaining the shift in her party’s thinking in relation to Europe which was reflected in the vote by 63% of the Green Party membership in January 2007 to support the Lisbon Treaty. She has also been one of the Green Party’s main delegates on the National Forum on Europe since 2002.

Shot taken in Penglai, China, while waiting for my girlfriend and her dad to arrive by bus. Featured ride belongs to my girlfriend's dad, who very very generously (and trustingly) lent me his precious 17 year-old made in Taiwan motorcycle.

As a car driver, I found the ride exhilarating on all levels... the wind in my hair (underneath the helmet), the rumbling noise from the wind, the uncontrollably intense vibrations from the diesel engine... I LOVED IT!

So that's my first bike ride. Oh before I forget, I think it'd be good to point out that I don't own a biking license. But in the words of her dad (translated): 'He rides like a champ'.

This street seemed to be full of bike shops. This one called Fietsfitters or something like that. From running around A'dam, I deduced first that bikes are called "verkoops" but maybe they're also called "fiets"? I don't know.

Interesting enough, if they are called "verkoops," that's like koop as in cooper as in barrel-maker. So you could see how maybe you'd see a bike wheel as a sort of hoop from a barrel.

I know. I'm stretching it.

Odense has been named the "bicycle city of the year" because of the great number of bicycle lanes in the city. A complete network of 350 km all-weather serviced lanes exists in the town — this is as much as some states in Germany.

Bicycle lanes in Danish cities and towns typically consist of an asphalted lane exclusively for bicycles between the lane(s) for motor vehicles and the sidewalk/pavement for pedestrians. There is normally a bicycle lane on each side of the street, and each is strictly one-way only. Where there is parallel parking, the bicycle lane is generally placed between the parked cars and the sidewalk/pavement.

Bicycle lanes are usually wide enough for two bicycles to ride side-by-side (2.2 m), particularly in urban areas. This allows for passing on the left hand side and a greater space buffer between cyclists and motor vehicles. In Copenhagen's 2002–2012 Cycle Policy, the city announced plans to widen some of the lanes to allow three bikes across (3.5 m) in particularly congested areas. On the largest streets at the intersections there are separate traffic lights and directional arrows for motor vehicles and for bicycles, and separate lanes for those turning and those going straight through, with the traffic signals coordinated to avoid conflicts.

As an experiment started at the end of 2006, Norrebrogade, the main street in the Norrebro area in Copenhagen, has had its traffic lights set for a "green wave" at 20 km/h to let the bikes get through without stopping, while cars typically have to stop at every light. This is done deliberately to make it more advantageous to ride a bike than to drive a car in the area.

Outside of the towns and cities there are often bicycle tracks parallel to, but separated from, the roads between towns. It is also common to have bicycle tracks going through forest and park areas were cars are not allowed.

Copenhagen has free "city bikes" stationed around the city.

Bicycle Signal (Amsterdam, The Netherlands)

Bicycle Signal (Amsterdam, The Netherlands)

In The Netherlands, separate bicycle signals are commonly used at arterial intersections that have bike lanes and high volumes of bicyclists and motor vehicle traffic. The bicyclist signals are vertical red, amber, and green bicycle symbols mounted on a pole. They are located either next to the vehicle signal head [i.e., using the same 20-cm (8-in) diameter signal face as the vehicle signal] or at a lower level (1 m or 3 ft high) using a smaller size signal face (7 to 7.5 cm or 3 in). The signal indications are all steady (i.e., no flashing indications), and there is typically an advance green phase for bicyclists, with a simultaneous red phase for right-turning motor vehicles.

Governor's Island: Taken from NYC Harbour, July - 2008.

From May 31st until October 12th, Governors Island is open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On Friday, the Island is open from 10 AM to 5 PM; on Saturdays and Sundays, the Island is open from 10 AM to 7 PM.

HISTORY:

The Native Americans of the Manhattan region referred to the Island as Pagganck (“Nut Island”) after the Island’s plentiful hickory, oak and chestnut trees. Its location made the Island a perfect fishing camp for local tribes and many residents of the area used the Island seasonally. In June of 1637, Wouter Van Twiller, representative of Holland, purchased Governors Island from the Native Americans of Manahatas for two ax heads, a string of beads, and a handful of nails. Though he was a representative of the Dutch Government, Van Twiller purchased the Island for his private use. The Island, thereafter known as Noten Eylant or Nutten Island, was confiscated by the Dutch Government a year later.

In 1664 the English captured New Amsterdam, renaming it New York, and took Nutten Island, which had been left unfortified by the Dutch. The Island, however, switched hands between the British and the Dutch over the next 10 years until the British regained exclusive control of the Island for the “benefit and accommodation of His Majesty's Governors.” Although it was not officially named until 1784, it thus came to be called Governors Island.

The Island’s strategic location resulted in its use as a military facility by British and American forces for over 200 years. Following the British evacuation of New York in 1776, Americans fortified the Island in fear of further advances by the British navy. When fighting broke out in August, the English overpowered General George Washington and his men, and American forces retreated from Long Island and Governors Island. After the Revolution, the Island reverted back to New York State, and remained inactive for several years. In 1794, with the country in need of a system of coastal defenses, construction began on Fort Jay, on high ground in the center of the Island. In 1800, New York transferred the Island to the United States government for military purposes. Between 1806 and 1809, the Army reconstructed Fort Jay and built Castle Williams on a rocky outcropping facing the Harbor. During the War of 1812, artillery and infantry troops were concentrated on Governors Island.

The Island continued to serve an important military function until the 1960’s. During the American Civil War, it was used for recruitment and as a prison for captured Confederate soldiers. Throughout World Wars I and II, the Island served as an important supply base for Army ground and air forces.

Physically, the Island changed greatly during the early twentieth century. Using rocks and dirt from the excavations for the Lexington Avenue Subway, the Army Corps of Engineers supervised the deposit of 4,787,000 cubic yards of fill on the south side of Governors Island, adding 103 acres of flat, treeless land by 1912, and bringing the total acreage of the Island to 172. In 1918, the Army built the Governors Island Railroad, which consisted of 1-? miles of track, and three flat cars carrying coal, machinery and supplies from the pier to shops and warehouses. Six years later, a municipal airport was proposed for the Island. Instead, Liggett Hall, a large structure designed by McKim, Mead & White, was built and became the first Army structure to house all of the facilities for an entire regiment.

With the consolidation of U.S. Military forces in 1966, the Island was transferred to the Coast Guard. This was the Coast Guard’s largest installation, serving both as a self-contained residential community, with an on-Island population of approximately 3,500, and as a base of operations for the Atlantic Area Command and Maintenance and Logistics Command as well as the Captain of the Port of New York.

Over the years, Governors Island has served as the backdrop for a number of historic events. In 1986, the Island was the setting for the relighting of the newly refurbished Statue of Liberty by President Ronald Reagan. In 1988, President Reagan hosted a U.S.-U.S.S.R. summit with Mikhail Gorbachev on Governors Island, and in 1993 the U.N. sponsored talks on the Island to help restore democratic rule in Haiti.

In 1995, the Coast Guard closed its facilities on Governors Island and, as of September 1996, all residential personnel were relocated. President Clinton designated 22 acres of the Island, including the two great forts, as the Governors Island National Monument in January 2001, and on April 1, 2002, President George W. Bush, Governor Pataki, and Mayor Bloomberg announced that the United States of America would sell Governors Island to the people of New York for a nominal cost, and that the Island would be used for public benefit. At the time of the transfer, deed restrictions were created that prohibit permanent housing and casinos on the Isl

Biking the Mojave Fall 2007 - Introduction
I biked through Death Valley in October 1996. It was 109°F at Furnace Creek. The area is beautiful, but it was way too hot at that time of year. I knew I wanted to come back on my bicycle when it was cooler. This year it worked out to take about 3 weeks after Thanksgiving. I ended up spending 18 days to cycle from Palm Springs to Las Vegas. I spent about half of that time in Death Valley NP. In Baker I met a group of cyclists on racing bikes with a support vehicle. They were cycling from Palm Springs to Las Vegas in 2 days. I saw a lot more desert than they did.
Coachella Valley and Joshua Tree National Park
I crossed the Coachella Valley on Ramon Rd. It was over 70°F, probably the warmest day of the trip. It wasn't 'til I turned onto Thousand Palms Rd. that I felt like I was heading out into the desert on my own. The San Andreas Fault system runs along the northern end of the Coachella Valley. The faults allow groundwater to rise to the surface resulting in a number of California fan palm oases. It's wonderful to see oases in the desert.
It was a 1300m climb on Berdoo Canyon Rd. to the Coachella Valley-Pleasant Valley saddle in Joshua Tree NP. I didn't see a single person or vehicle in Berdoo Canyon. Climbing out of Pleasant Valley I saw the first person, a fellow adventurer. Patrick was walking solo across Joshua Tree NP from west to east. That's a heck of a trek. That park is huge and has only one known spring. Patrick had set up two water caches before his trip.
Amboy Road and Mojave National Preserve
I bought enough food in 29 Palms to last 4 days to Baker. Heading east on the Amboy Rd. I met the only other touring cyclist of the trip. He had come down from Bishop through Death Valley NP, Baker, Kelso, Amboy - much the same route I was planning to take. When I met him, he had run out of food. I shared some almonds with him but didn't have much sympathy with his plight. The reason he didn't buy food in Baker was because there wasn't a health food store! Well, I told him there was a grocery store in 29 Palms, but it might not be up to his standard.
One of the things I was looking forward to on this trip was experiencing the transition zone between the Sonoran Desert (lower, farther south) and the Mojave Desert (higher, farther north). Creosote bushes grow in both, but most other flora is limited to one ecosystem or the other. In the transition zones you can see a mix of vegetation. What I saw ended up being less dramatic than Washington County, Utah where the Colorado Plateau, the Basin and Range country, and the Mojave Desert all come together. Joshua Trees were the main ecosystem indicator for me. I knew I was climbing high when I started to see them.
I was surprised how much traffic there was on the Amboy Rd. It wasn't much, but a lot of the paved roads that I was on during the trip would have one car every 10-30 minutes and perhaps none all night. The only truly busy roads were the road north out of Baker (on a Saturday morning) and the Pahrump-Las Vegas superhighway which has a wonderful bicycle lane.
I climbed Sheep Hole Pass to get into the Amboy Valley. It was in the Amboy Valley where I became accustomed two aspects important to cyclists in the Mojave:
Distances are deceiving. You can see really far. It takes much longer to cross these valleys that it appears that it would.
The slight inclines up alluvial fans or other fill climb a lot more than they appear to. In Colorado I'm not accustomed to seeing the whole climb since there are usually canyon climbs here. Leaving Amboy, for example, I climbed over 3000 ft. on a slowly rising alluvial plane. It took hours.
I enjoyed time off the bike to walk out to and up Amboy Crater. The following day I climbed to the top of the Kelso Dunes. And one day later I climbed one of the cinder cones east of Baker. I enjoyed having a diversion each day. Each of those areas is beautiful in its own way. The creosote bushes in the Amboy Valley are particularly green because of the shallow water table. Kelso Dunes are simply fantastic, and the cinder cone area with over 30 cinder cones and not another person felt like another planet.
In Baker I bought enough food to last 10 days and ate at the Mad Greek at my brother's recommendation. I had taken a rest day the previous day because of rain, and Baker was a bit flooded. Folks were out pushing water around with brooms. At the store the locals were telling each other how much their roofs leaked.
Death Valley National Park
Heading north of Baker the saddle that separates the Silurian Valley from Death Valley is only about a 50' climb. From there I left the pavement and stopped at Saratoga Springs to see the incredible wetlands in the desert. I had

sky day 306

sky day 306

sitting around a dinner table in stellenbosch, it's the first time i've really spent time with local white people
every conversation becomes an opportunity to defend their history
to become defensive about everything about themselves and no one has prompted anything to be defensive about
you all said
we needed apartheid to have the economy we have now
it is important that it happened so that south africa has a healthy economy
but the economy is falling now i said, twelve of your dollars to one usa
you said that was because of affirmative action
as if the economy could be remotely as important as hurting and killing people and shoving them in rodent and disease infested shack camps
where they still fucking living because they are too poor to afford the gentrified apartments in town even though they are extremely cheap
what the fuck in my brain for a week on end without a break
i couldn't sleep in that bed, i had a million bad dreams and you gave me about ten copies of time magazine to read
which i thought was really nice
you held up a grapefruit and an avocado that was clearly the size of a chihuahua and later you said
there is no such thing as an indigenous people of south africa
black people are inherently lazy and
they all have aids and are dirty and go to witch doctors
and rob good people like us, right
you waited for me to say something in response
i sat there silently with a plate of bland food in front of me
fuck.
and i thought at least upon three occasions that you were the most confusing person ever
how can one person allow both of the following things to come out of their mouth:
all plants are endangered because there aren't enough of them!
and
there is only one way to get rid of people who are evil, and that is to shoot them in the fucking head
you said, you don't talk to evil people, you kill them
you said both those things in the course of an hour
you made your hand look like a gun with your long, strong boney fingers
your mechanical fingers
and pushed your eyebrows together when you said that thing about killing evil people
i imagined you holding a bazooka and blasting away people while wearing a uniform
and smoking a cigarette while you did it
i know that will probably never happen but you talked about doing it and of course that scared me
why the hell wouldn't it
i said what makes a person evil
you said, well, like, satanists and the people that go to witch doctors are evil
you also said before that, that you believe 75% of black people in this country go to witch doctors
which obviously can't be true because that would be like ninety percent of the population of south africa
so i calculated in my mind that you believe that many people are evil
and by what you said before that, should be killed and not reasoned with
i thought about that and didn't say anything that would have caused some shit to go down because i am a fucking coward
and i was definitely afraid of you
i just said, i disagree
you looked at me and said you don't know what it's like, you are lucky, in your country there are more white people than black people
you looked at me and then you said, at least the black people in your country behave themselves
you lock the locks in your house
you live in a suburb with a lot of police men and open space and clean parks
i just spent a month in langa, i didn't even lock my things there, what the hell is wrong with you i wanted to say
but i know there is nothing inherently wrong with anyone
you just grew up in this alternative universe where black people are the anti-christ
i wish i could make you come with me next month when i'm going to be in khayelitsha and gugalethu and langa
i rode the extra bike in the garage to the mountain pass where all the trees that europeans brought to this country are
all the conifers and the pines and the deciduous ones, lined up like a fence
the first time i've been alone outside in two months
i went there later with you but the first time, i went alone
the trees line up like a fence and i looked up at them and i haven't really seen large trees in months
and i loved them because they were trees and hated them because of what they meant
the fact that they aren't baobab and cactuses is fucked up? is it really? i don't even know
i don't believe in evil but then again i don't really believe in anything except individual people
read time magazine until my brain broke, pretty much
you watched jurassic park and asked me why my brother wasn't in the army and wasn't in iraq
i said wanted to say because he doesn't like killing spiders because he loves animals and people are animals
i said, he has a different job

Jimmy Nelson

Jimmy Nelson

BlackfootDirect's Jimmy Nelson handles a low, winding corner that will return him back to the upper portion of the track.

Bio - Jimmy Nelson
(C) 2007 by Monty Nicol. All Rights Reserved.

Last year, in his first pro season, Jimmy Nelson made it clear he was here to win. His relentless attack riding style collected just as many podium finishes as big air spreds in the MX magazines. Nelson won each of the four nationals he raced, took seven out of eight motos, finished first overall, and took the championship. That's why, this season, Nelson's proud that his Blackfootdirect Team Toyota Yamaha's YZ250F wears the #1 plate.

"Oh yeah," Nelson says. "That plate represents a lot of hard work."

Off the track, the 21 year-old Battle Mountain, NV, native projects the quiet, calm confidence of a rider who knows what he can do. But Nelson says that confidence also comes from knowing that, with the Blackfootdirect team behind him, there's absolutely nothing between him and another stellar racing season.

"We definitely have the best bikes, the best mechanics, the best team in Canada by far," Nelson says. "Everything. It's all there. There's just no excuse not to win."

Nelson says that, with the team behind him, he's not only approaching this season with a goal in mind, but has specific goals in mind for next season, too.

"I want to win the championship this year," Nelson says simply. "And next year, hopefully, I'll ride the 450F. I want to stay with Blackfoot."

Is Nelson nervous about the upcoming season? Not really, he says. He's been training, eating right, and working to get better

"The races are the fun times," he says. "The only time you're nervous is when you're not ready."

Create Bikes Broken handlebars

This is what happens when you buy a cheap bike off the internet. The bike company is Create but to be honest they are all the same. Very cheap materials used in the handlebars led to metal fatigue - after eight months. This particular break happened whilst I was riding and very luckily on a quiet street. No surprise I didn't stand a chance and the crash was quick and brutal.
So please Beware! don't go cheap, buy a proper bike from a respectable retailer.
