20080607 New Bike Tire
This new tire replaces the old one with a gash in the sidewall. I noticed a cut in the tire at work while talking to a colleague about the bike. I lowered the tire pressure in order to make it home without a violent blowout. At home I casually removed the wheel and sat back in my recliner to change the tire. While sitting in the chair, the tire went flat.
The name of that colleague at work is Manu. Go figure.
Rear Tire Argyle
Horizonal component
The fine dust has started to appear on the trails, which coats pretty much everything. I've been experimenting with slightly lower tire pressure, and after riding home, noticed this pattern where the sidewall must have been folding slightly, jettisoning the particles and creating this natty "XXX" pattern.

Freewheel Removers, etc.
When I worked in a shop, we had a wire with about 20 or so of these strung on it. Most were for obsolete or rare freewheels. All of these are pretty current, though the silver one in the upper left is a Shimano HG freewheel remover. Aren't a lot of those. There are two crank extractors. The silver one is a Sugino I bought in 1984 to carry with me all over southern England and the eastern United States. I actually used it once while out on the road when I had an unfortunate shifting experience involving a sudden hill.

BEST VALUE BICYCLES : BEST VALUE
BEST VALUE BICYCLES : ADAMS TRAIL A BIKE HITCH : GIRLS IN SKIRTS ON BIKES.
Best Value Bicycles
- Best Value is government policy in the United Kingdom affecting the provision of public services in England and Wales. In Wales, Best Value is known as the Wales Programme for Improvement.
- A result intended in the acquisition of all goods and services. Price must be one of the evaluation criteria when acquiring goods and services. Other evaluation criteria may include, but are not limited to environmental considerations, quality, and vendor performance.
- Local councils have to secure the 'best value' they can when they are providing services or contracting others to provide them. They have to challenge why and how a service is provided; compare services with others and consult with users and other relevant people.

Project 365 #175: 240610 On Your Bike Son
On making a call of nature today I found this beastie in the gents!
No, it wasn't circling the bowl. It's also not unprecedented, or for that matter even unusual, to find a bicycle in the gents. It's far bigger than it needs to be and is located in a place that makes it convenient to park a bike in. It makes sense when you know the building.
In this day and age bikes are amazing machines. A new bike now will have some magic superlight frame, carbon spokes, disc brakes, sprung and shock absorbed suspension and never less than ten million gears.
This venerable Royal Enfield was like a breath of fresh air. Heavy, welded tubular steel for the frame. Side pull caliper rim brakes. White walled tyres. And best of all the magical classic of classics - the shiny three speed Sturmey Archer hub. Familiar to a generation of seventies kids as the gearbox of choice in the Raleigh Grifter and Chopper (and possibly even in the weird Mk 2 Vektar). It was proof that for all the pose value of a fancy gearing system you only REALLY needed three.
Happy times. :)
man with umbrella on sidewalk
A street bicycle repair guy sits in the shade of a "borrowed" McDonalds umbrella in a small backstreet near the center of the city
With the first McDonalds store opening in China in Shenzhen the capital of Guangdong province in 1990, there are now over 580 stores across the country which is expected to almost double before the "2008 Olympic Games" (of which it is a major sponsor) In a country that at best is struggling to feed its 1.4 billion population and importing more and more food stuffs each year this is of course a great contradiction. With the average price of a simple hamburger meal at about 20:00 yuan, this is a very high price to pay for the average Chinese consumer for a "meal" that most commentators would argue has very little nutritional value, not to mention the cultural damage that the American food giant is doing to a country that is famous for its various cuisines

DIRT BIKE CATALOG - BIKE CATALOG
Dirt Bike Catalog - In Step Bike Trailer Reviews.
Dirt Bike Catalog
- A motorcycle designed for use on rough terrain, such as unsurfaced roads or tracks, and used esp. in scrambling
- There are many systems for classifying types of motorcycles, describing how the motorcycles are put to use, or the designer's intent, or some combination of the two. Six main categories are widely recognized: cruiser, sport, touring, standard, dual-purpose, and dirt bike.
- trail bike: a lightweight motorcycle equipped with rugged tires and suspension; an off-road motorcycle designed for riding cross country or over unpaved ground
- n. an off-road motorcycle. Usually louder than MTBs.
- Make a systematic list of (items of the same type)
- Enter (an item) in such a list
- catalogue: make a catalogue, compile a catalogue; "She spends her weekends cataloguing"
- a book or pamphlet containing an enumeration of things; "he found it in the Sears catalog"
- List (similar situations, qualities, or events) in succession
- a complete list of things; usually arranged systematically; "it does not pretend to be a catalog of his achievements"
Though I'm not 100% sure, the little research I've done leads me to believe this is the model Bianchi I purchased in the early 1980's. (This image comes from a 1982 Bianchi catalog that I used to have; I purchased this photocopied facsimile off the Web after instantly recognizing the cover graphic.)
Getting this bike was a big deal for me. It replaced the dirt-brown, second-hand 10-speed that I'd been tooling around on and was a bona fide road bike — with a pedigree, no less! For several years beforehand I'd been mesmerized by the brief coverage given to the Tour de France on ABC's Wide World of Sports, and knew the name Bianchi well: it was sexy, European, and conveyed a sense of Old World craftsmanship and attention to detail. (No matter that this bike was most likely built and assembled in Taiwan...) The one regret I had was that the bike wasn't Celeste Green, Bianchi's trademark color; I just couldn't afford the models in that price strata. This one was cobalt blue.
My parents took me (most likely on my instruction) to a bike shop in Naperville on the corner of S. Mill and W. Jackson, just across the street from Centennial Beach. (The shop has long since been converted into something else.) I recall it being a rather serious occasion, with Dad perhaps asking if I was sure about wanting to go through with the purchase. $399 comes to mind when I try to remember the price.
Funny thing is, for an upgrade on this order of magnitude, there's not a whole lot I remember about the bike aside from riding circuits around Blackwell forest preserve in Warrenville. I couldn't have had it for more than 3 or 4 years, though, because in March of 1986 I replaced it with the Fuji Opus III, when I'd signed up to take a cycling "class" at North Central College. Connie Gates had also signed up for the course and, being that she didn't have a decent bike to ride — and was the cutest girl in the class — I let her borrow the Bianchi. (I had outgrown it by then, anyway.) The class would be sent out on rides around Naperville and I clearly remember sticking with Connie once to teach her the basics of shifting gears, etc. We were on E. Diehl road when she said she was thirsty; rather than reach down to grab the water bottle, she stopped the bike on the side of the road first before taking a drink. I just didn't get it.
That was my last semester at NCC, and after that time I didn't see Connie (or the Bianchi) ever again. Several times I contemplated going over to her house in Downers Grove to retrieve my bike, but in the end it just didn't seem worth the effort or emotional awkwardness of the situation so I just let it go.

Shogun Bmx Bikes
- Bicycle motocross or BMX refers to the sport in which the main goal is extreme racing on bicycles in motocross style on tracks with inline start and expressive obstacles, and it is also the term that refers to the bicycle itself that is designed for dirt and motocross cycling.
- Shogun (renamed Samurai Swords in 1995) was a board wargame released in 1986 by game maker Milton Bradley as part of their Gamemaster series.
- A hereditary commander-in-chief in feudal Japan. Because of the military power concentrated in his hands and the consequent weakness of the nominal head of state (the mikado or emperor), the shogun was generally the real ruler of the country until feudalism was abolished in 1867
- (shogunate) dictatorship: a form of government in which the ruler is an absolute dictator (not restricted by a constitution or laws or opposition etc.)
- a hereditary military dictator of Japan; the shoguns ruled Japan until the revolution of 1867-68
James Clavell's Shogun
John Blackthorne, an English ship pilot, whose vessel wrecked upon the Japanese coast in the early 17th century is forced to deal with the two most powerful men in Japan in these days. He is thrown in the midst of a war between Toranaga and Ishido, who struggle for the title of Shogun which will give ultimate power to the one who possesses it.
What better way to escape from the onslaught of so-called reality television than to sail away with Richard Chamberlain to "the Japans" for a little samurai action and some discreet "pillowing"? From the golden age of the miniseries comes this television benchmark, the 10-hour, Golden Globe-winning saga based on James Clavell's bestselling epic. In his award-winning performance, Chamberlain stars as John Blackthorne, the 17th-century English navigator on a Dutch trading ship. A storm runs the ship aground off the coast of Japan, a "torn and cruelly divided country" locked in a power struggle between Toranaga (the venerable Toshiro Mifune) and Ishido, two warlords who would be Shogun. Blackthorne gets over his initial culture shock ("I piss on you and your country," he defiantly proclaims to his samurai captors, which to his humiliation turns out to be an unfortunate choice of words) to become a trusted ally of Toranaga and the lover of the beautiful interpreter Lady Mariko (Yoko Shimada). Their forbidden, ill-fated romance--and Blackthorne's total assimilation into Japanese culture--is set against political intrigue as Toranaga prepares for the inevitable showdown with Ishido, and Blackthorne's growing influence threatens the local Jesuits who had built up a lucrative trade monopoly. Shogun was a production blessed with good karma, and it remains an awesome achievement from a bygone era when the miniseries was king. --Donald Liebenson

I taught Aaron (and Joe) to ride a bike today - using a technique that doesn't use stabilisers - you just take the pedals off and they scoot around a bit and then tackle gentle grass slopes as they pick up speed and confidence. By 2.30pm, Aaron's pedals were on and he had cycled the length of a football pitch.
Joe (2) matched him on his little wooden Like'a'bike on the slopes. We had a few falls, a few tears and a few mouthfuls of grass, but Aaron can now ride and as soon as Joe is big enough for a bike with pedals, I reckon I'll have him riding in about 10 minutes!
A great technique that really works.

Crowfoot YSA Ward
The second, and last cache for the day, was about a twenty (20) minute ride from the first location. It wasn't immediately clear to me how to get from the first spot to the next by looking at the map, so we probably rode a little further than we needed to - but Paige's ability has increased enough to where she was able to tackle to distance, and the hills. When we finally closed in on the second treasure, we were in the parking lot of a church.
On one side of the parking lot was a set of picnic tables. That looks like a good hiding spot. But, no. Then there was a rocky outcrop that had a number of small bushes along one side of the parking lot. But, no. And then there was a small storage area, which even had the name of the cache on it, Crowfoot. But, no. After about an hour of looking, we were about ready to admit defeat. Paige, was visibly upset to have trekked so far, and looked so hard, and to not have found anything.
At her request we looked at one more area - an area that was well off the GPS coordinates for the cache. But, no.
As we were starting to walk away, I decided to give one last look at a spot that was nagging my mind - a storm sewer. You know the type that drains off of parking lots. But could it be down in there? How would you get in there? If I was going to hide a cache there, I'd string it from one of the steel rods on the front of the drain, but no ropes were to be seen. Okay, maybe, just maybe, if I feel along the edge. Bingo! Tied to one of the steel rods on the front of the drain, nearly invisible to the naked eye, was a clear, high gauge, fishing line. At the other end was the treasure!
From there began the long ride home. Luckily, it had mostly uphill to the caches, so it was a breezy ride downhill to home. Total distance for the day - not including all the walking we did while hunting - was four miles. Paige's endurance, and will to find the treasure, has greatly increased from last Fall. Let the caching begin in earnest!
“Anyone Can Ride!” Kuala Lumpur
Photo made in KL during a trip to Malaysia this summer.
I have had a look at their website. It is a cycling event for the whole family with 3 types of non-competitive rides plus a challenge, also a ride not a race.
I aspecially like the thought of a 100m Tricycle Ride (for children between the ages two (2) and five (5)).
Incidentally, I have seen very little cyclists in Malaysia. Not one in the cities, few beyond. En route in Borneo, there were some villagers cycling. Plus a few tourists on mountain bikes.
