Windblown Look

Not a fabulous composition, I know, but I love that fluff on his head. And those waves down his back and tail are so handsome and silky. I wish you all could reach out and feel his fur. Truly plush!

I've had someone local express interest in adopting Magnus. I believe in complete disclosure, and Magnus is far from a perfect pup. Here's an excerpt from the e-mail I sent the gentleman. I'm afraid I'll scare everyone away from him, but it would be unfair not to be upfront about him. This is a list of areas that need work:

First, Magnus is a barker. He alerts to anything (and unfortunately is starting to get our resident dog to let out an occasional bark). He can be desensitized, but I am not sure it would go away quickly.

Second, I am working hard with him right now regarding letting others come into our house. He thinks his job is to bark at anyone [who approaches or enters the house, quite ferociously, and I am afraid it could, sadly, readily escalate.] Now I am using a crate in the main living space. He is much more re-directable in the crate. Friends who visit understand that he will bark a bit. I reward him any time he is quiet. Then I change it up to any time he is lying down. Then finally when he is in a relaxed pose (head resting). He's learning. Friends give him treats to help more. And I give a "jackpot" reward both with people arrive and I shut him in the crate as well as when people are leaving to distract him from even thinking about barking and associating their leaving with his barking. I'd hate for him to think his barking accomplishes something.

Third, Magnus is still learning about the great, big outside world. He does great in our neighborhood, but he needs exposure to many more things out there. Whoever dumped Magnus obviously did not do anything to socialize the pup, unfortunately. He had not been housebroken (he is now, thankfully) or exposed to anything in the real world. Sigh.

Fourth, Magnus has a fear of getting into a car. Not sure if he associates a car with being taken and dumped. I fed him his "meals" (I take a treat approach to all food, carrying his food in a treat bag on my hip rewarding good behavior and teaching him new, desirable behaviors) for a full week in the back seat of the car. Now he will get into my vehicle, although sometimes he balks a little bit. Then I use treats on the edge of the door frame and gradually encourage him into the vehicle. Improving with time, but not yet a thing of the past.

Fifth, Magnus can easily get depressed if repeatedly left alone for long periods of time (or even left out in the yard while we are in the house). Thankfully, that doesn't tend to be an issue because my husband is home most days. This is a breed trait from what I can gather. He really would do better with someone home more than not.

I want what is best for Magnus, so I want to be straightforward about what to expect. Are you comfortable continuing to work diligently on these issues? Will you be around more than not to help Magnus? When I take him to new environments, I have to work to get him calm, then he can handle it. He has trouble focusing on treats and heeling when overwhelmed. After a few minutes of walking around, he settles and trusts me. Then we encounter the next thing. It takes time and effort, but Magnus deserves to have the chance to be a well-balanced adult. I wish someone had worked with him before he arrived in our home. But now there's no looking back, just forward.

He really is a sweet puppy, devoted and loving toward us. And a goof, too. He's a lumbering giant, and the whole floor shakes when he plops down on the ground. Spends a lot of time lounging and relaxing in the house. We keep chew toys available, and he has not destroyed a single item in our house, not a single one. Impressive for a young pup. He's crated when we are gone and tolerates that very well (treats!). Spends the night crated in our bedroom without any problems, too. Able to go eight hours or more without accidents. He just lies and sleeps. Occasionally chews on quiet toys in there. Outside, he's more energetic. He doesn't like to entertain himself outside, though. He wants us out there. If we are out there, he runs and plays. If we go back inside, he lies down on the dog bed by the door. And stays there until we come back out. Just so much prefers to have his people with him.

I believe Magnus has great potential, but he needs so much work. Sigh.

QB plush back

So the other plush i ordered came, and they are quite different. The sitting one is one that came from China (bootleg possibly? Came months ago though, so probably.) The standing one has more detail, softer fabric, but i like the ears on the sitting one better. Should have given something for scale, but the squares are about 24 inches a side, if that means anything.

Interesting note, the standing one is almost exactly the same as the pattern that came in the latest issue of COSmode.

Do you see the fairies too?

As a child we are able to see so differently than adults. The sunshine will see them leaping and dancing, parks are a place to pretend a whole new world, and dandelions are fairy dust...

Children have this wonderful ability to be in the moment and create fun from the most mundane of things. A big empty box? Now you've got a spaceship! A bag of cotton balls? Snowball fight! A pile of rocks? Mysterious eggs with unknown creatures! Their imagination and creativity is so spontaneous. They show us how little it really takes to be happy and that pleasure can be wrought from the simplest of things.

Here, my little one is enjoying the delights of her summer wardrobe... even though she must compromise with tights and comfy shoes. And enjoying the delights of nature and her imagination. We were doing a bit of gardening today and she came across a very smooth and oval rock... suddenly we had a special new pet... "Eggie". Eggie traveled with us for the afternoon and got to share in the delights of fairy dust in hopes it would help him to grow and get ready to come out of his shell. As I look back on this moment yesterday, I remember how much fun she was having, rubbing those fluffy seeds on her
"egg" and explaining to me how this magic was supposed to work. Of course I was distracted by trying to get a good shot, nice lighting, background, etc...to really enjoy the moment with her.

When I saw this photo, it all came back to me, though. Her laughter, her jumping from flower to flower, how carefully she carried that little rock around and all the plans she wa making for a little house, a bed, wondering what kind of baby might pop out of this "egg".

Happiness is all around us, if we just open our eyes to see it. It doesn't require big trips, fancy clothes or expensive toys. Simple things can show us beauty and joy... just take a moment to watch a child and they move in the world around you. Give them the opportunity and they will find delight in whatever is around them.

He seemed so much larger...

...but then, I suppose, I was so much smaller.

Wow, that's sort of depressing.

Prime was always a favorite, and he was one of the few expensive toys I had as a kid. I really, really loved him and was heart-broken when he died in "Transformers the movie". As cheesy as it seems to identify this heavily with a cartoon character, I never had a good relationship with my father, and prime was kind of a substitute role model for me. Luckily, you can't keep a good toy down, and Prime returned in the series shortly after the feature film.

This is the new 25th Anniversary version, a reissue of the original in a slightly altered color scheme to more closely match the cartoon. It sort of floors me that a character I looked up to so much as a mighty hero in my childhood now literally fits in the palm of my hand as an adult.

I'm gonna go listen to "The Touch" now.

What I Did All Summer

The hypnotic Dinosaur King game. Every go you get a card, which you can swipe to choose or power up your dinosaur. Nathan won all the battles - based on Rock Paper Scissors - a couple of times, and came home with a nice collection of cards.

1. What is your favourite doll from your personal collection?
I have a soft spot for Grace since she was my first girl and CS's are usually overlooked.

When I was tagged I quickly made Grace a white bunny to hold (although here he looks a bit like a dirty rag), because my favourite toy growing up was a rabbit called Tommy, (originally Rabbit from TV programme Old Bear). She also has messy hair (a typical Emma trait) and is by the window, where it is dull and rainy (a typical England trait).

Ronke is a close second though since she has the strongest personality of my girls- as soon as got her I noticed that her eyelids were slightly lower than usual, giving her a disdainful look that always makes me laugh. She is also named after my aunt.

2. Favorite BL release?
I don't know my BL's very well but I've always liked the look of Kozy Kape.

3. Favorite EBL release?
Fruit Punch possibly.

4. Favorite SBL release?
Agh, pretty please can I have three? Mademoiselle Rosebud, Can Can Cat and Rainy Day Parade.

5. Favorite RBL release?
This is tough since all my girls are RBLs. Aside from them, I really like Sunshine Holiday, Heather Sky and Princess a La Mode.

9. How did you get into Blythe?
I came across her by chance on the internet with no tags or brand name by the picture, then spent about a week googling "big headed doll" etc, and eventually found her :)

10. What do you collect other than Blythe?
Well I have two Monster High dolls but I'm trying my hardest not to buy any more.

I collect DVDs, if you could call it that. I am on a mission to have all of the pre-2000s Disney films, all Marilyn Monroe films, all films in imdb's "Top 250" list and all Johnny Depp films.

I also have a huge ever-growing pile of magazines and magazine cuttings waiting to be used or thrown out.

Centauress Nephele and Anak

This is Nephele (which means cloud nymph), and her Familiar, Anak (child of Krakatau). Anak and Nephele live in the lava fields of Kilauea on the Big Island, Hawaii. They are an ancient race that once roamed wild and free throughout the continents. Now they are only remembered in Legends. They have adapted and survive in extremely harsh conditions. They survive because there is little or no intrusion from the outside world. They are the colors of the lava flows, the ash and vapors that surround them. Nephele's familiar, Anak, has similar characteristics and coloring that she has. Anak and Nephele communicate with one another through their horns. Nephele is very vain and, of course, her pride is her mane and tail which she is constantly grooming. Occassionally, a volcanologist comes their way to take lava samples. When this happens, they can sense someone is coming through their hooves and disappear long before they arrive.. So if you travel throughout the world and find yourselves in the wild places, take a good look around, you may be awed by what you can find and what you can see.

Gettin' the Bnd Back Together

I collect Transformers primarily but when I was a kid, I never really played with Transformers. We were mostly really into Lego and Micro Machines and Ninja Turtles.

And GI Joe. Though Joes never landed on the level of those listed above.

Still, I had quite a few. I still have many of the ones that didn't meet death at the hands of the "Upside down bike with a spinning wheel".

I kind of faded out with Joes for a long while, then a few years ago, Hasbro released Spy Troops. These were a subline the way Transformrs has Cybertron and The Movie. They featured more modern sculpts and designs. I started bying the stray Joe here and there back then. Designs I liked. I followed to the Valor vs Venom line.

Then Hasbro released Sigma 6. Larger scaled fancy Joes. I'm pretty sure at the time I heard Hasbro say they would no longer make 3 3/4 scale Joes (ever).

I may have misheard. Or Sigma 6 turned out to be lame and over priced.

Anyway, now they've started releasing smaller Joes again for the 25th Anniversary of small Joes. I picked up Cobra Commander and Storm Shadow. Storm Shadow here is actually a good guy in this variation apparently but I'm too cheap to spring for the boxed set (also I can't find it) so he'll be a bad guy to me.

Cobra Commander also has this awesome fist of fury hand. FOR SHAKING!

YO JOE!!!!

My son, Ethan and I was playing with my GI JOEs today while watching some of the old 80s cartoons... he has never seen them till today and he already thinks the cartoon is so cool.. hehe... then I realized that I never really took photos of my Joes. I am a pretty big fan of GI Joes ever since I was a kid.

So... I decided to make a game with this photo. To see if anyone can actually name all the GI JOE figures in this shot... (Not counting the Destro Mighty Mugg :P) Ethan and I spent awhile setting them all up so for those of you that are up to it, hope you have fun. :)

*Whoever can list all of them first, I will send you a toy. :P

I spotted these floating nearby the pier. I thought the thick fog would help to hide the background detail and focus attention on the boats. There was a composition with the boats and a pier on the other side of the lake but the rowing club was setting up for their morning practice so this shot was going to have to do.

Ah the beauty of Lego. You can play for years and years and never lose that childish spark if adventure and imagination from within.

Star Wars and Toy Story is a little beyond the imagination of my Lego experience, but thankfully these things live on in my kids.

Couldn't resist a "little green men" alien homage AB's who better to experience it than the intergalactic travelers that are stormtroopers.

And the bad one always comes up from behind you...

Just the right dip in light behind the trooper, being picked up again by the alien face.

Alone, they find their only ally in MoJo, a monkey with a peculiarly large brain and a sympathetic nature, but is MoJo really on their side? The 87-minute length doesn't offer the breakneck momentum that regular episodes do, but it's still riotously funny and filled with tons of Powerpuff fighting. Fans may miss the other super villains featured in the show (MoJo's the only bad guy in town, for now), but with the jokes and action coming fast, you'll be pleasantly enraptured by the perky threesome. Lifeguards - Toy or Real?

I like this shot because the boat and lifeguard look like small, remote-controlled toys floating in a pond...almost like it should be a Ken boy toy for Barbie. I think I had to zoom to 48x (4x digi x 12 optical) for identification purposes during a recovery. I'm surprised it doesn't seem all that noisy even in the original size.

4x4 Driving Intensive Course

Besides as a hobby, sometimes I help to conduct the 4x4 Driving Intensive Course. This is one of the exercise that the driver have to go through - negotiating obstacle by coming out from the mud hole. Since Malaysia is getting rain through out the year, there are lots of mud hole created naturally along the Malaysian Rainforest track, hence knowing, learning and experiencing on how to get out from the mud hole without damaging the forest and nature is very important and crucial to those who love this hobby.......

G with the slingshot - shooting rocks into the water. It was total fun. Which lead to a rock skipping contest which I was totally winning with 8 skips until Chris threw one for about 15. Damn them!

Smyths is an Irish toy superstore chain founded c.1987, and the largest toy retailer in Ireland, claiming to have 60% of the €320M market. It is a family-run company, with four Smyth brothers (Anthony, Padraig, Liam and Thomas) running the business. In the year ending March 2006, Smyths employed 692 staff, had sales totalling €184M, and had profits of €6.2M, down from €11.7M the previous year. Ten years earlier, the company had just four stores and sales of €20 million. Smyths operates 20 stores in the Republic of Ireland, 6 in Northern Ireland and a further 11 in England.

Smyths sell a wide range of toys for all ages of children, and also sell a wide range of electronic equipment such as computer games and consoles. After the opening of the store in Cardiff two new stores have opened in Sheffield in south Yorkshire and in Birmingham in the West Midlands. 2010 will see the further expansion in to the British retail Sector.
