- physical objects consisting of a number of pages bound together; "he used a large book as a doorstop"
Book Bento Box
I took a fun bookmaking class through my city, where each book was a traditional Japanese design, but each was small enough to fit in a compartment of a bento box (except for my scroll, which ended up a little long ;) ). In addition to the books, we also learned suminigashi (marbling paper), kumihimo (cord braiding) and koyori (paper twisting). I also learned how to make book cloth, use a tear knife, and various other skills related to general bookmaking.
Mouseover each book for a description.
Books do furnish a room
Book have been the greatest part of my life. Some of my most persistent memories are of reading. I always remember the intense excitement of a new book as a child, they determined my imagination, they provided the greatest enriching narratives and contain the whole history of our culture. This random snapshot gives a glimpse of my interests, everything from Proust to Spinal tap.

To enter the fascinating grounds of color canary breeding means to understand what to do and when to do it. Basic concepts of genetics are necessary to really succeed in this ancestral hobby. The management of mating, the identification of genetic formulas to handle breeding procedures, and finally get full control of the results to measure success and mistakes are all necessary as well.
This is exactly what this book is all about: offering the knowledge in simple and firm steps and giving the reader breeding procedures in a theoretical basis to perform modern color canary breeding, including the most recent mutations.

British Airways Airbus A319-131 Heathrow Final Approach 'G-EIDU'
The A319 is a shortened, minimum change version of the A320. With virtually the same fuel capacity as the A320-200, and fewer passengers, the range with 124 passengers in a two-class configuration extends to 3,600 nautical miles (6,900 km), the highest in its class. A319s are among the most popular variants of the A320 family. In 2003 easyJet took delivery of A319s with smaller galleys (as EasyJet does not serve meals on some of its shorter flights) and 156 seats in a single class configuration. To satisfy evacuation regulations, additional over-wing exits were included.
According to The New York Times the A319 was introduced at the request of Steven Udvar-Hazy.
With jet fuel prices rising dramatically, Northwest Airlines is replacing the McDonnell Douglas DC-9 aircraft it has had in service for decades with the A319, because it is 27% more fuel efficient than the DC-9.
The large easyJet order of 120 A319s plus 120 options was among the biggest aircraft sales deals in recent times, rivaled only by chief competitor Ryanair's order for Boeing 737 aircraft.
It is powered by the same types of engine as the A320. JAA certification and service entry, with Swissair, took place in April 1996.

Reflections Vietnam Memorial Washington DC
This is a night shot taken at around 2am in January 2011 approximately 28 Degrees out during a trip to Washington DC. This is a very worked on image, not a simple click and shoot by any means. There are over 15+ individual images which were then combined to make panoramas. Individual shots were also used as patches in places and various Photoshop tools were used.
There are so many things that are so amazing about this location and monument. The obvious ones are how you start with the first names and as the years go on and the wall get taller with the names of those that sacrificed. Many have noticed it's amazing black shiny reflective stone used to make the panels.
What you may not realize is that this monument was set on what looks like near if not perfect sight lines with the Washington and Lincoln Monuments. If you stand right at the middle of the monument...the sunken light are like landing lights at an airport and the lead directly to the two monuments. You can also see each monument when looking into the deep black panels. I found the perfect place to capture the capital dome, and the Washington Monument on both sides of the image. This image is over 1.5GB in size. You can read the individual names on the first 2.5 panels!
As I was creating this image I was playing with the different elements that you can see and how they all interacted with each other. The soldiers names, the reflections of the monuments, the reflections of the Vietnam monument within itself, the snow covered grass area in each part of the memorial.
I am learning that when taking a picture or taking many pictures to create a final image there are so many things going on at the same time. As humans when we are physically at a place we are constantly changing our point of view, focus, and attention on things, and we can do this because we are physically there. In a picture, much of that dynamic ability is removed and it's up to the photographer or artist to help recapture what the viewer can't recreate. So with this in mind I tried to capture in this image the ability to focus on the bright names in the foreground, yet change the focus from the names to the Washington Monument reflected in the left. As the wall moves away from you the focus changes to show the reflections of the environment including the sky and trees that surround the area. As the wall turns lights reflect from the paths behind me. If you were to change your angle the Lincoln Monument would be seen, and you can see the white field reflected as the white lower half of the far wall. Even closer to the end tip of the monument is the White Capital Dome just sticking up above the horizion and, if you look hard you can even see it in the reflection of the wall.
Overall I am happy with this image, it is by far the most sophisticated "image" I have created with my camera and Photoshop. The cool thing about this is that there is no way that with one single shot I could have captured it. My goal though was to create an image that gives the viewer more to see, to appreciate, to get caught up in than a single image would have done. This still doesn't come close to what it was like to stand there in the dark, all alone, at 2am below freezing and take everything in, but...I hope I got close.
This image is dedicated to all the men and women that have sacrificed so much for all of us and this great country.
A Blessed Memorial Day to all and GOD Bless America!!!

Washington Boulevard by Louis Kamper
Five buildings on Washington Boulevard were designed by architect Louis Kamper (1861 - 1953):
-- Book Building, 13 floors, completed in 1916
-- Book Tower, 36 floors, completed 1926
-- Industrial Bank Building, 22 floors, completed 1928
-- Washington Boulevard Building, 23 floors, completed 1923
-- Book Cadillac Hotel, 29 floors, completed 1924
(Mouse over the photo to identify buildings)
What's with all the "Books"? The Book brothers, James Burgess Book Jr. (1890 - ?), Frank Palms Book (1893 - ?) and Herbert Vivian Book (1895 - 1963) were the grandchildren of Francis Palms, one of the city’s wealthiest men. The Book brothers were raised on Washington Boulevard in the original Cadillac Hotel.
From the website BuildingsofDetroit.com: "Starting in 1916, J. Burgess Book Jr. and his brothers embarked on turning the rundown and ragged Washington Boulevard into a fashionable destination, similar to Fifth Avenue in New York. The first major building constructed was the Book Building, a rather simple 13-story Italian Renaissance office building. Like most of the buildings on the boulevard, it was designed by Louis Kamper, the Books’ architect of choice.
"While distinguished, the Book Building was Kamper’s first major commercial design. Along the Washington Boulevard side, the Book Building has 12 sculptures of nude women, known as caryatids, which seem to be holding up the building’s cornice. The building's U-shaped design allowed for ample sunlight in more offices.
"Next, Kamper came up with the Washington Boulevard Building at the corner of Washington and State. The following year saw the opening of Kamper’s best-known creation, the Book-Cadillac Hotel. As the city’s fortunes rose with the auto industry, office and retail space on the boulevard was in demand. By this time, the Book brothers controlled about 60% of the frontage on Washington. But everyone else in town seemed to be building tall skyscrapers, and the Books wanted to make a statement of their own. For that, they asked Kamper to build them the tallest building in the city, the 36-story Book Tower."

Essentials of Corporate Finance (The Mcgraw-Hill/Irwin Series in Finance, Insurance, and Real Estate)
Essentials of Corporate Finance, 7th edition by Ross, Westerfield, and Jordan is written to convey the most important concepts and principles of corporate finance at a level that is approachable for a wide audience. The authors retain their modern approach to finance, but have distilled the subject down to the essential topics in 18 chapters. They believe that understanding the “why” is just as important, if not more so, than understanding the “how,” especially in an introductory course. Three basic themes emerge as their central focus: 1. An emphasis on intuition—separate and explain the principles at work on a common sense, intuitive level before launching into specifics. Underlying ideas are discussed first in general terms, then followed by specific examples that illustrate in more concrete terms how a financial manager might proceed in a given situation. 2. A unified valuation approach—Net Present Value is treated as the basic concept underlying corporate finance. Every subject the authors cover is firmly rooted in valuation, and care is taken to explain how decisions have valuation effects. 3. A managerial focus—Students learn that financial management concerns management. The role of financial manager as decision maker is emphasized and they stress the need for managerial input and judgment.

Michael Rennie
British postcard. Photo: Gainsborough.
English film, television, and stage actor Michael Rennie (1909-1971) was best known for his starring role as the space visitor Klaatu in the science fiction classic The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951).
Eric Alexander Rennie was born in Idle, now a Bradford suburb, in 1909 as the son of James Rennie, who operated a century-old wool mill, and Edith Dobby Rennie. His great-great grandfather, named John Rennie, designed and built New London Bridge. Eric was educated at The Leys, a private school in the city of Cambridge. He worked as car salesman and manager of his uncle's rope factory, before he turned to acting. In 1935 he adopted the professional name Michael Rennie. “Handsome but hollow”, according to Hal Erickson (All Movie Guide), Rennie gained experience in acting technique while touring the provinces in British repertory. At the age of 28, he was noticed by Gaumont British, which arranged a screen test. He first appeared onscreen as the stand-in for Robert Young in Secret Agent (1936, Alfred Hitchcock). Between 1936 and 1940 he appeared in minor unbilled roles in ten additional films. Shortly after the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, the 1.93 m tall Rennie began to receive offers for larger film roles, starting with his first (small) billed performance in the wartime morale booster The Big Blockade (1940, Charles Frend) starring Michael Redgrave. Six films later, however, Michael Rennie also had his first film lead. The suspense drama Tower of Terror (1941, Lawrence Huntington), released shortly after Pearl Harbor, was styled in the manner of a horror film and starred Wilfrid Lawson as a mad Dutch lighthouse keeper in Nazi-occupied Netherlands, while second-billed Rennie and third-billed Movita had the romantic leads. His career was interrupted by war service. He joined the Royal Air Force in 1941, and would become a flight instructor for over two years. With the Second World War's end in May 1945, Rennie began to be seen as a potential star as a result of his roles in two vehicles for Britain's most popular star of the era, Margaret Lockwood: the musical I'll Be Your Sweetheart (1945, Val Guest) and, most prominently, the sensual costume adventure The Wicked Lady (1945, Leslie Arliss). The latter turned out to be the year's biggest box office hit, subsequently being listed ninth on a list of top ten highest-grossing British films. He also had a single prominent scene as a commander of Roman centurions in Caesar and Cleopatra (1946, Gabriel Pascal), starring Vivien Leigh and Claude Rains. Second leads and then leads in seven other British films produced between 1946 and 1949 followed.
Michael Rennie, along with Jean Simmons and James Mason, was one of a number of British actors offered Hollywood contracts in 1949–50 by 20th Century-Fox's studio head, Darryl F. Zanuck. The first film under his new contract was the British-filmed Medieval period adventure The Black Rose (1950, Henry Hathaway), starring Tyrone Power. Rennie's second Fox film, the Film-Noir The 13th Letter (1951, Otto Preminger) was a remake of the French film Le Corbeau/The Raven (1943, Henri-Georges Clouzot). His next film gave him first billing and assured him screen immortality. The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951, Robert Wise) was the first post war ‘A’ science-fiction film. According to Wikipedia it is “A serious, high-minded exploration of humanity's place in the universe and our responsibility to maintain peaceful coexistence, it has remained the gold standard for the genre of the era.” Convinced that it had a potential leading man under contract, the studio decided to produce a version of Les Miserables (1952, Lewis Milestone) as a vehicle for him. Rennie's performance was respectfully, but not enthusiastically, received by the critics. Ultimately, Les Miserables turned in an extremely modest profit and put an end to any further attempts to promote the 43-year-old Rennie as a future star. He was, however, launched on a thriving career as a top supporting actor. He co-starred with Jean Simmons in the 20th Century-Fox epic The Robe (1953, Henry Koster) and also appeared in its sequel, Demetrius and the Gladiators (1954, Delmer Daves). Rennie was billed fourth and third, respectively, playing the Apostle Peter, who provides affirmation in the new faith, as Jean and Richard Burton become martyrs for Christianity. The final film that cast Michael Rennie with Jean Simmons was Desiree (1954, Henry Koster) with Marlon Brando as Napoleon. As French marshal Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, who becomes King Charles XIV John of Sweden, Rennie marries Jean's Desiree, but her true love always remains with Napoleon. His career began to decline, film opportunities were less appealing and gradually he slipped away from cinema screens. Among his fil;m roles were The Rains of Ranchipur (1955, Jean Negulesco) with Lana Turner, and The Lost World (1960, Irwin Allen), the

Ivor Novello
Ivor was born January 14th 1893 to accountant David Davies and Welsh singer Madame Novello Davies. The child was named David Ivor after his father, though was known as Ivor from an early age.
When Ivor was five months old his mother was to travel to America for the World’s Fair to represent Wales with her Ladies Choir. Her group won first prize and much acclaim in America, soon finding much demand for them to tour. She was then asked to give a command performance for the Queen, which further enhanced her reputation. Ivor grew up in an environment filled with music and many celebrities associated in the field such as the great singer Clara Butt.
The first time Ivor sang in public was when his mother prompted him unwillingly forward before a host of friends at a party before another tour of America.
His mother became widely recognised as an accomplished teacher and travelled to London to instruct classes on a regular basis. On one particular trip Ivor accompanied her and saw his first West End play entitled “English Nell”. He was inspired by this new entertainment and he was further inspired to complete his studies and start his own puppet theatre to entertain friends.
In 1903 Ivor went to the National Eisteddfod at Aberystwyth, a competition for Welsh Opera. His mother entered him under the name Ivor Cardiff so as not to risk prejudice in the judging procedure. The ten-year-old boy won first prize. His identity revealed, Madame Clara was once again congratulated upon producing another successful student. Ivor was never short of company as he was constantly surrounded by all manner of people from the art world as well as having an adopted sister, whom his mother called Marie Novello.
Ivor was schooled at a private academy in Cardiff, where he made his first appearance, in the pantomime “Aladdin”. Interested in all things musical, Ivor obtained his first gramophone at the age of twelve and along with his piano, it became a favourite as he listened to the great singers of the day.
He then left for Gloucester where he studied for a period under one of his mother’s friends Mrs Arthur Sly. At this point Ivor was enamoured with a girl named Dorothy Jones, who lived at Longford House, Gloucester. The house had a private theatre attached and it was here that Ivor played his first real acting part as Sir Peter Teazle in Sheridan’s “The School for Scandal”. The experience was so enjoyable that Ivor decided there and then that one day he would become an actor.
Initially it was Ivor’s voice which sent him to Magdalen College on a Scholarship in 1903. Ivor sang solo in the choir there for five years. At the age of 16 and a half his voice broke and a career in singing was left behind with his childhood.
Ivor had been busy composing and after many attempts Arthur Boosey, a London music producer, accepted a song entitled “Spring of the Year”, a waltz. The piece, published under the name Ivor Novello, was not a great success but convinced Ivor that it was a path he wished to pursue. With much practise, Ivor improved and further pieces became well recognised, such as “Little Damozel”. Upon leaving school he went to live at his mother’s London home.
As he matured, Ivor became strikingly handsome with his dark hair, brown eyes complimented by a pale complexion. At one time he was described as “the handsomest man in Britain”.
The thought of acting had never left his mind and Ivor yearned to take to the stage, spending his money on attending as many shows as possible at Daly's and the Gaiety Theatre. This was in spite of his mother who was firmly opposed to the idea and only wished him progress further with composing.
Ivor produced his first musical comedy called “The Fickle Jade”, which was not very successful, but he was able to meet many other young composers and gain valuable experience. In 1910 Ivor heard his first piece of music

According to legend the Swedish 12th century king Eric the Holy saw a yellow cross in the sky as he landed in Finland during a crusade in 1157. Seeing this as a sign from God he supposedly adopted the yellow cross against a blue background as his banner. This legend is however contradicted by the fact that there are no depictions or descriptions of the blue and yellow banner until the mid 16th century. The flag may also have been a resistance flag against the Danish flag the Dannebrog.

Archer: Season 1
Suave secret agent Sterling Archer is the world’s most dangerous spy, but political intrigue and global crises are nothing compared to the sexual tension and human resources crises at the intelligence agency where he works. Archer must deal with his over-bearing, over-sexed mother--who is also his boss--and his femme fatale ex-girlfriend who seems to be sleeping with everyone except him. Embezzlement, mind control, hangovers, and demented double crossings--they’re all in a day’s work in this outrageously raunchy comedy!

Episodes on disc two:

Dial M for Mother
Smart, literate, cheeky, profane, and frequently laugh-out-loud funny, Archer is one of the hippest animated comedies to come along in some time. That's hip in a retro kind of way; writer-producers Adam Reed and Matt Thompson, whose previous collaborations include Frisky Dingo and Sealab 2021 (both also animated, and both seen on the Adult Swim channel), have given these 10 first-season episodes a secret-agent vibe straight out of the Sean Connery James Bond '60s. At center stage is Sterling Archer (voiced by H. Jon Benjamin), top agent for an outfit known as ISIS, which just happens to be headed by his domineering, sex-starved mother, Malory (Jessica Walter). Others on the team include agent Lana Kane (Aisha Tyler), Sterling's once and no doubt future lover, nerdy company comptroller Cyril Figgis (Chris Parnell), Lana's current boyfriend, and some colorful supporting characters. But this is mostly about Sterling, who, in addition to his fancy spy chops, is an irresponsible liar, ne'er-do-well, and wastrel (he spends an entire episode breaking into the agency's mainframe so he can blame someone else for his outrageous expenses). His missions, in which he's often joined by Lana (the better to hurl flirtatious epithets at one another), are fairly stock: Cuban missile submarines off the Florida coast; an arms dealer peddling stolen weapons; a bomb threat on a luxury airship. And the animation, while effective, is limited and unlikely to remind anyone of a Pixar movie. It's the writing that really makes this show shine, as Reed and Thompson revel in an unending stream of hilarious puns, insults, and bons mots: a shirt retrieved from an Indian dry cleaner "smells like Indira Gandhi's thong," karate is "the Dane Cook of martial arts," a particularly bloody shootout is "a Charles Whitman sampler." It's definitely not for kids, but Archer is a hoot. Extras include a version of the pilot episode with an "alternate" lead character, and an interesting making-of featurette. --Sam Graham

Santa Barbara - Exit Theory
I wanted to keep drinking with my buddies, most of whom I hadn't seen in close to five years. But 24-hours strong is more than my 158-pound frame can handle, at least these days. Well, I actually performed quite well for another five hour, until I was crashed out in a King City Day's Inn, locked in an air-conditioned room with the comforter on the floor, the Dateline expose of roach motels still fresh in my mind, the paranoia matched only by the intensity of my laughter with each passing Flight of the Conchords episode. (God that show is great.) There's something about free HBO when I'm in these anonymous states that really adds value to the Denis Johnson-inspired search for salvation.

flight of the conchords episode 2 season 1
From J.J. Abrams, the creator of Alias, comes the action-packed adventure that became a worldwide television event. Stranded on an island that holds many secrets, 48 people must band together if they hope to get home alive. Now you can experience the nonstop excitement and mystery of every episode, from the show's stunning first minute to its spectacular finale, on a seven-disc set. Presented in a widescreen theatrical format with 5.1 Surround Sound and bursting with more than eight hours of original bonus features -- including unaired Lost flashbacks from the final episode -- Lost is a real find.
Along with Desperate Housewives, Lost was one of the two breakout shows in the fall of 2004. Mixing suspense and action with a sci-fi twist, it began with a thrilling pilot episode in which a jetliner traveling from Australia to Los Angeles crashes, leaving 48 survivors on an unidentified island with no sign of civilization or hope of imminent rescue. That may sound like Gilligan's Island meets Survivor, but Lost kept viewers tuning in every Wednesday night--and spending the rest of the week speculating on Web sites--with some irresistible hooks (not to mention the beautiful women). First, there's a huge ensemble cast of no fewer than 14 regular characters, and each episode fills in some of the back story on one of them. There's a doctor; an Iraqi soldier; a has-been rock star; a fugitive from justice; a self-absorbed young woman and her brother; a lottery winner; a father and son; a Korean couple; a pregnant woman; and others. Second, there's a host of unanswered questions: What is the mysterious beast that lurks in the jungle? Why do polar bears and wild boars live there? Why has a woman been transmitting an SOS message in French from somewhere on the island for the last 16 years? Why do impossible wishes seem to come true? Are they really on a physical island, or somewhere else? What is the significance of the recurring set of numbers? And will Kate ever give up her bad-boy fixation and hook up with Jack?
Lost did have some hiccups during the first season. Some plot threads were left dangling for weeks, and the "oh, it didn't really happen" card was played too often. But the strong writing and topnotch cast kept the show a cut above most network TV. The best-known actor at the time of the show's debut was Dominic Monaghan, fresh off his stint as Merry the Hobbit in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films. The rest of the cast is either unknowns or "where I have I seen that face before" supporting players, including Matthew Fox and Evangeline Lilly, who are the closest thing to leads. Other standouts include Naveen Andrews, Terry O'Quinn (who's made a nice career out of conspiracy-themed TV shows), Josh Holloway, Jorge Garcia, Yunjin Kim, Maggie Grace, and Emilie de Ravin, but there's really not a weak link in the cast. Co-created by J.J. Abrams (Alias), Lost left enough unanswered questions after its first season to keep viewers riveted for a second season. --David Horiuchi

DVD features
Even if you saw every episode of Lost on TV--or perhaps especially if you saw every episode--the DVD set is a must-own. The episodes are presented in widescreen format, just as they were broadcast on high-definition channels. (Conventional ABC-TV broadcasts were reduced to 1.33 full-screen format.) Four of the episodes have commentary tracks by the producing team and the actors who were featured on certain episodes (Terry O'Quinn, Dominic Monaghan, and Maggie Grace and Ian Sommerhalder). The last disc has over three hours of bonus material sensibly broken into three categories. "Departure" discusses the initial creation of the series, the making of the pilot, and the cast (some characters were created to fit the actors, and Evangeline Lilly's Kate was the hardest to cast). It also includes the cast's audition tapes and photographs by Matthew Fox. "Tales from the Island" provides background material on seven of the episodes plus the boars used in filming, Jimmy Kimmel's appearance on the set, and the genesis of the Driveshaft song ("You all everybody..."). Finally, "Lost Revealed" includes two scenes cut from the season finale, 13 other deleted scenes (not identified by episode, unfortunately), a blooper reel, and the cast and crew's giddy appearance at the Museum of Television & Radio. --David Horiuchi

R99 Ad
This is our latest ad (coming out in this weekend's Argus and Star). The idea was to highlight the fact that Travelstart only displays fares that are available.
Most travel agents' ads proudly display fantastic looking deals. However, when you look more closely, you find that taxes, surcharges and various other 'professional' fees must still be added. Worse still, the dreaded 'subject to availability' disclaimer is always lurking somewhere in the smallprint.
We decided to mock this frustrating form of advertising by proclaiming our own "insanely low fares". Our disclaimer reads, "Airfare, taxes and fuel surcharges NOT included."
I'm sure this will annoy some people, but that's the whole point :)
Medical Tourism
India is capitalizing on its low costs and highly trained doctors to appeal to "medical tourists." Even with airfare, the cost of going to India for surgery can be markedly cheaper, and the quality of services is often better than that found in the United States and UK. Indeed, many patients are pleased at the prospect of combining their tummy tucks with a trip to the Taj Mahal.

London Heathrow Airport (LHR) Terminal 5 - Ariel View
Heathrow Terminal 5
Aviation at the location of what is now Heathrow Airport began during World War I, when the site was used as a military airfield. By the 1930s the airfield, then known as the Great Western Aerodrome, was privately owned by Fairey Aviation Company, and was used for aircraft assembly and testing. Commercial traffic used Croydon Airport, which was London's main airport at the time.
In 1943, Heathrow came under the control of the Air Ministry, to be developed as a Royal Air Force transfer station. Construction of runways began in 1944, on land that was originally acquired from the vicar of Harmondsworth. The new airport was built by Wimpey Construction, and was named after the hamlet of Heathrow, little more than a row of isolated cottages on Hounslow Heath frequented by highwaymen, which was demolished to make way for the airport, and which was located approximately where Terminal 3 now stands.
The Royal Air Force never made use of the airport, and following the end of World War II control was transferred to the Ministry of Civil Aviation on 1 January 1946. The first civil flight that day was to Buenos Aires, via Lisbon for refuelling. The official opening ceremony was performed on 25 March 1946 by Lord Winster, the Minister of Aviation. On 16 April a Panair Lockheed L-049 Constellation landed after a flight from Rio de Janeiro, the first aircraft of a foreign airline to land at Heathrow. The first BOAC scheduled flight departed for Australia on 28 May. This route was operated as a joint route with Qantas.
The airport opened fully for civilian use on 31 May 1946, and by 1947 Heathrow had three runways, with three more under construction. These older runways, built for the piston-engined planes of that era, were each slightly longer than a mile in length, arranged in a 6-point star pattern to allow for all wind conditions. The temporary "prefab" passenger and cargo buildings were located at the northeast edge of the airport, just south of Bath Road.
G-ARWE LHR 08.04.68
This is scanned from a slide in my collection and the original photographer is unknown. 90 secs after take off No 2 engine broke away from mounting over Hounslow just east of Heathrow. Take off was at 15.27 from 28L flight no 712. 20 secs into flight there was a loud bang and throttle lever for No 2 closed. Crew commenced Engine Failure drill during which they started to return to Heathrow.By now the No 2 Engine was well alight and crew were preparing to return to LHR to land on 05. As the u/c was lowered the engine fell away at a height of 3000ft. the touchdown was achieved 400yds beyond threshold.Following touchdown brakes and reverse thrust were applied, as the fire in the port wing root was causing severe damage to the window mountings. As shut down was ordered there was a sudden explosion. The port wing fell off at the root and the blast threw debris over to the starboard side of the aircraft. The time from rotation to touchdown was 3min 12 secs. The passengers escaped from the RHS along the wing and from rear and forward galley doors. 123 of the 127 had escaped before emergency services arrived.38 people received treatment for injuries and 5 died, including one stewardess - they were overcome by fumes inside the aircraft. Investigation found the cause to be failure of low pressure compressor wheel due to fatigue. This photo is not meant to offend, and please don't be, I have posted it as it is an unfortunate part of our aviation history.
This has been on flickr before on my other stream (now deleted). I haven't stolen it. I've decide to keep everything together in one place rather than on two accounts so i'm in the process of uploading them here.

Virgin Trip to America – Went with my loved ones (family n wife) on a package tour (a 40 ppl strong group) over a period of 12 days to California; it is the third-largest state in the United States in size, after Alaska and Texas. It’s a tormenting long distance flight of 17 hrs to and 21 hrs back from LA (our 1st stop at Tom Bradely international airport) but it’s all worth it. Overalll it’s a fantastic experience for all of us; felt the warmth hospitability and amicability of the locals there, great culture, accompanied by breathtaking landscapes along the way and not forgetting the crazy shopping spree we had in all 3 factory outlets that our tour guide brought us to. lol. We stopped by Los Angeles, Nevada, Fresno, San Francisco, a few cities to name.. Our itinerary covered famous landmarks like Las Vegas, Santa Monica, Fisherman Wharf, Golden Gate Bridge, Grand Canyon, Hollywood walk of fame and lots more, not to mentioned rides and time spent at Disney land, California Adventure Park and Universal Studios were truly enjoyable. Weather was fine and relatively cool during our period of visit.
It’s without doubt a lovely country and I relish the opportunity to head back there again.

Between 1968 and 1972, twenty four daring men journeyed from Earth to the Moon. This fascinating book traces what was a massive accomplishment right from the early launches through manned orbital spaceflights, detailing each step. Out of the battlefields of World War II came the gifted German engineers and designers who developed the V-2 rocket, which evolved into the powerful Saturn V booster that propelled men to the Moon. David Woods tells this exciting story, starting from America’s postwar astronautical research facilities. The techniques and procedures developed have been recognised as an example of human exploration at its greatest, demonstrating a peak of technological excellence.

We were amongst the last to board the plane at Glasgow and as we walked on I noticed business and first class were empty. I did my best to look tall (easy) and honest (not as easy). It must have worked because the stewardess told me to take a seat up front. Stupidly I told them I was with Jacqui so they upgraded her too.
It's the first time I have ever been upgraded. It was lovely. Huge seats, touch screen monitors, leg room to die for. Shame it was only a 2.5hr flight.
If you ever have the chance to fly AirIceland then do.
Filet Mignon in Flight
We'd booked economy from Washington to Roma via Frankfurt. Every once in awhile, just because we're loyal United Airlines customers, we get an upgrade. In a Business Class cabin filled with surly business travelers, we were a celebratory couple, just happy to have the luxury beyond what we'd expected. The staff onboard were very happy to have us, especially since no one else in their cabin cared at all.

The biggest stumbling block when it comes to religion is God, even for an ordained rabbi who admits her rational mind "just can't buy into a God in the sky who writes down our deeds and rewards and punishes us accordingly."
But not being sold on an intervening God shouldn't bar you from living a vibrant and fulfilling Jewish life. The God concept has seen many upgrades over the centuries and it is these reinterpretations that have kept Judaism relevant
In this provocative look at the many faces of God, Adventure Rabbi Jamie Korngold examines how our concept of God has changed over the centuries, and how these changes have shaped every aspect of Judaism. She shows that by upgrading our God concept to one that is aligned with our modern sensibilities, the result is a Judaism that is both meaningful and accessible.
In an exploration energized with enthusiasm and humor, Rabbi Korngold looks at God concepts ranging from the earliest perspectives to some of the most influential modern theologies. Ultimately she introduces a concept of God that speaks to the issues of the twenty-first century.

MONARCH BUTTERFLY FLIGHT. BUTTERFLY FLIGHT
Monarch Butterfly Flight. Lowest Airfare Hawaii.
Monarch Butterfly Flight
- A large migratory orange and black butterfly that occurs mainly in North America. The caterpillar feeds on milkweed, using the toxins in the plant to render both itself and the adult unpalatable to predators
- monarch: large migratory American butterfly having deep orange wings with black and white markings; the larvae feed on milkweed
- The Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) is a milkweed butterfly (subfamily Danainae), in the family Nymphalidae. It is perhaps the best known of all North American butterflies. Since the 19th century, it has been found in New Zealand, and in Australia since 1871 where it is called the Wanderer.
- Alabama is home to a diverse insect community. Thousands of species have already been described, and there are undoubtedly many yet to be discovered. Insects are critical to the proper functioning of Alabama's ecology. Without insects, many higher-level organisms would have no food source.

monarch butterfly flight
"If you want to observe the monarch in good conditions, it's necessary to first go to Mexico and get used to the altitude (2,400 meters), where they breathe air that is thin but exceptionally rich in pollution...It's the only place in the world where you can distinctly hear the sound that the wings of several hundreds of thousands of butterflies flying around you make."
Michel Braudeau's The Flight of the Monarch and Other Reflections magically spins simple facts of nature into unforgettable tales as it suggests what a miracle it is that certain species ever manage to reproduce at all. Consisting of six poetic and concise essays—five of which originally appeared in Le Monde—this elegantly written book demystifies the natural world by clearly, accurately, and often humorously, conveying encyclopedic knowledge in small, unforgettable, gem-like chapters. Braudeau depicts the arduous, multi-generational migration of the Monarch butterfly; the in-flight snooze of the soaring "Martinet"; the road-block that saved an entire population of toads; the simultaneous birth of 8,000 wildebeests; the stupid leatherback turtle that nonetheless holds the secret of eternal youth; and, finally, answers the question of why we don't see that many flea-circuses anymore. He does so with obvious enjoyment, interweaving the facts of these animals' lives with the economic and political realities of our world in a way that will make conservationists approve and applaud. This book will appeal to a wide audience, for its masterly handling of language and content truly offers something for everyone.

The Clouds
I still wore a little child's clothes, and I lay
Stretched out with my mother in the warm heather,
The clouds floated by above us
And my mother asked me what I saw in them.
I called out: Scandinavia, and: ducks,
There goes a lady, sheep with a herder—
The wonders became words and pushed further,
But I saw how my mother's smile filled with tears...
Then came the time that I didn't look up to the sky,
Even though the heavens were full of clouds,
I didn't reach to the flight of the strange thing
That with my shadow rubbed along side my life.
—Now my little boy lies aside me in the heather
And shows me what he sees in the clouds,
Now I cry myself, and see in that which is to come
The distant clouds which caused my mother to cry—
(tr. Cliff Crego)

herman life flight
When Trauma and Recovery was first published in 1992, it was hailed as a groundbreaking work. In the intervening years, Herman’s volume has changed the way we think about and treat traumatic events and trauma victims. In a new afterword, Herman chronicles the incredible response the book has elicited and explains how the issues surrounding the topic have shifted within the clinical community and the culture at large.Trauma and Recovery brings a new level of understanding to a set of problems usually considered individually. Herman draws on her own cutting-edge research in domestic violence as well as on the vast literature of combat veterans and victims of political terror, to show the parallels between private terrors such as rape and public traumas such as terrorism. The book puts individual experience in a broader political frame, arguing that psychological trauma can be understood only in a social context. Meticulously documented and frequently using the victims’ own words as well as those from classic literary works and prison diaries, Trauma and Recovery is a powerful work that will continue to profoundly impact our thinking.

Custom packaging
This was a custom package for an overseas customer who was sending one of our breast cancer bracelets to a family member here in the states.
She wrote a note in Spanish for me to send along with her gift, I typed it and printed it on pink paper and used pink raffia instead of my usual green. I thought it came out very pretty and I think her grandmother will be so surprised and pleased!
Packaging
So... I had a problem finding a good box to put my prints in, so I ended up making my own packaging. Inside is about 20 4x6's and the package is made with a Roundys bag and cardboard... Inkjet printer and tape. Lovely.

DIY: real-time clock (ds1302) and Supercap
I built this so that it could be attached to an arduino system using ribbon cable wiring and point-to-point solder connections.
chip is ds1302 in 8-pin DIP package, sitting on a machined-pin IC socket.
the supercap (.022 farad) is wedged between the DIP8 pins of the clock chip socket. its suspended by the soldering on its own leads and the 8-pin DIP socket pins.
a small crystal (32.768khz) is held by its own wires (long cyliner, left).
yellow heatshrink tubing is protecting the soldered lead wiring. (it has not been thru the shrink phase, yet).
overall, a really compact real-time clock circuit.

Real Time
An elder of the Odawa tribe on Manitoulin Island, Eddie King, told us there were 3 real times. The others were man-made. Of these real times, and I believe there is a petroglyph symbol to represent it, I have represented here The Four Seasons.
For the First Nations, New Year begins in March. "Mother Earth is working back up. It's a new beginning... The days get longer..." They consider Spring & Falls equinox important and they live by the natural order....
