A heuristic approach for airport gate assignments for stochastic flight delays [An article from: European Journal of Operational Research]

This digital document is a journal article from European Journal of Operational Research, published by Elsevier in 2007. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
To make good flight to gate assignments, not only do all the relevant constraints have to be considered, but stochastic flight delays that occur in actual operations also have to be taken into account. In past research, airport gate assignments and stochastic disturbances have often been handled in the planning and the real-time stages separately, meaning that the interrelationship between these stages, as affected by such delays, has been neglected. In this research, we develop a heuristic approach embedded in a framework designed to help the airport authorities make airport gate assignments that are sensitive to stochastic flight delays. The framework includes three components, a stochastic gate assignment model, a real-time assignment rule, and two penalty adjustment methods. The test results are based on data supplied by a Taiwan international airport, and show that the proposed framework performs better than the current manual assignment process and the traditional deterministic model.

Friday, June 8, 2007 was traveling day. It was a LONG day. Carl had an earlier flight than Jim and me. In hindsight, it would have been better if we had dropped Carl off at the airport first. Then Jim and I could have returned the rental car. That would have prevented Carl from missing his flight home.

We are ready to board our flight to Valdosta, but it has been postponed.

Seedy motels

Seedy motels

Last night I spent the night in a cheap motel with a woman who wasn't my wife.

You can start breathing again, I wasn't cheating on my lovely wife. Our chief evil minion Lindsey and I are on our way to PyrateCon in New Orleans. This was the most reasonably priced motel we could find when exhaustion set in. Is that simulated wood grain on that tv? And the walls, and the bathroom...

Alas, Rossana is leading a very popular ghost hunt at the Mansfield Reformatory that won't be done till Midnight Friday night and there are no reasonable flights to the Big Easy at all. This is an untested show and it might be a bust. I pray silently to the Ferengi gods of commerce that it isn't. Gas is an arm and a leg.

On the up side, we've been listening to 'The Lost Painting' by Johnathan Harr. It is a great detective style story about the search for a lost Caravaggio painting. It's suprisingly engaging and I now know more about Renaissance artists, Italian archives and art historians as well as art restoration. Now I just need someplace I can show off this knowledge and maybe drop some names of famous Caravaggio researchers. Maybe the next time I hit Quaker Steak and Lube or the Great Wall Chinese buffet.

Brad Pitt's housing project in the Ninth Ward. New Orleans. Louisiana. USA. December 2007

Brad Pitt's housing project in the Ninth Ward. New Orleans. Louisiana. USA. December 2007

From Wikipedia.com: " The Pitt-Jolie family divides its time between Los Angeles, California and New Orleans, Louisiana. In an interview with the Times-Picayune, while filming The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Pitt said:
“ I can't describe why we're allowed to live a more normal life (in New Orleans). Living in the French Quarter is a thrill for us. We have some semblance of real family life. People have been very, very gracious with us. If we're on the front deck, people go by and say, 'Hi.' Then they go on their way, very friendly.”

In December 2006, Pitt gathered a group of housing professionals together in New Orleans to begin planning a project that Pitt calls Make It Right, with the goal of financing and constructing 150 new houses in New Orlean's Ninth Ward. The houses are being designed with an emphasis on sustainability and affordability, with the hope that the project can and will be replicated throughout the city. Thirteen architectural firms are involved in the project, many of which are donating their services. Pitt and philanthropist Steve Bing have each committed to matching $5 million in donations".

Nine Lives: Mystery, Magic, Death, and Life in New Orleans

Nines Lives is a multivoiced biography of a dazzling, surreal, and imperiled city, told through the lives of nine unforgettable characters and bracketed by two epic storms: Hurricane Betsy, which transformed New Orleans in the 1960s, and Hurricane Katrina, which nearly destroyed it. Dan Baum brings this kaleidoscopic portrait to life, showing us what was lost in the storm and what remains to be saved.

Book Description
The hidden history of a haunted and beloved city told through the intersecting lives of nine remarkable characters.

After Hurricane Katrina, Dan Baum moved to New Orleans to write about the city’s response to the disaster for The New Yorker. He quickly realized that Katrina was not the most interesting thing about New Orleans, not by a long shot. The most interesting question, which struck him as he watched residents struggling to return, was this: Why are New Orleanians—along with people from all over the world who continue to flock there—so devoted to a place that was, even before the storm, the most corrupt, impoverished, and violent corner of America?
Here’s the answer. Nine Lives is a multivoiced biography of this dazzling, surreal, and imperiled city through the lives of nine characters over forty years and bracketed by two epic storms: Hurricane Betsy, which transformed the city in the 1960’s, and Katrina, which nearly destroyed it. These nine lives are windows into every strata of one of the most complex and fascinating cities in the world. From outsider artists and Mardi Gras Kings to jazz-playing coroners and transsexual barkeeps, these lives are possible only in New Orleans, but the city that nurtures them is also, from the beginning, a city haunted by the possibility of disaster. All their stories converge in the storm, where some characters rise to acts of heroism and others sink to the bottom. But it is New Orleans herself—perpetually whistling past the grave yard—that is the story’s real heroine.
Nine Lives is narrated from the points of view of some of New Orleans’s most charismatic characters, but underpinning the voices of the city is an extraordinary feat of reporting that allows Baum to bring this kaleidoscopic portrait to life with brilliant color and crystalline detail. Readers will find themselves wrapped up in each of these individual dramas and delightfully immersed in the life of one of this country’s last unique places, even as its ultimate devastation looms ever closer. By resurrecting this beautiful and tragic place and portraying the extraordinary lives that could have taken root only there, Nine Lives shows us what was lost in the storm and what remains to be saved.

Amazon Exclusive: Dan Baum on Nine Lives

Hurricane Katrina was the kind of event a reporter waits his entire life to cover. It was especially satisfying doing so for The New Yorker. While newspaper and television reporters chased about feverishly in their attempt to feed the insatiable daily news monster, I enjoyed the time to go deep and peel back the tragedy in all its complexity. I wrote half a dozen short “Talk of the Town” pieces and two long articles over the following year.

Even working for The New Yorker, though, covering Katrina and its aftermath became frustrating. The longer I stayed in New Orleans, the more I understood that huge as Katrina was, it is hardly the most interesting thing about New Orleans. New Orleans is the most unusual place I’ve ever been—complicated, sensual, self-contradictory, hilarious, infuriating—and it was the place itself, not the tragedy that befell it, that I wanted to write about.
So when my wife and I thought about writing a book, it wasn’t a “Katrina book” we had in mind. We finally settled on interweaving the life stories of nine New Orleanians—rich and poor and in between, black and white and in between, male and female and in between. Nine Lives begins in 1965, right after the last time a big part of the city flooded during a hurricane. By this we want to say: New Orleans was there a long time before Hurricane Katrina and it will be there a long time after. Katrina doesn’t show up in Nine Lives until past page 200.
We had two guiding principles: No bad guys, and all happy endings. All nine of these people are, in their own way, heroes. And while we could have ended any of their stories on a down note, we instead end all at a moment of ascendance. There are many ways of looking at New Orleans, but this is how we chose to do so in Nine Lives.
We were careful not to make Nine Lives the kind of "issue" book one must read to understand current events. We want people to read it for the same reason they read The Kite Runner or The Bridges of Madison County—out of love of the characters and a warm, delicious eagerness to see their lives unfold. New Orleans is above all, a fun place, and we tried to make Nine Lives as much fun to read. —Dan Baum

Sometimes I wish I had the ability to just fly away….

Sometimes I wish I had the ability to just fly away….

I don’t like hotel rooms. God knows I’ve stayed in enough of them, though. It always happens! I get that damn feeling every time. I check in, step into the elevator, walk up to my room door, put in the key or swipe the key-card, enter and then walk to the bed. I place my bags on the bed and just stand there for a few seconds looking around. It’s at that point that the feeling hits. LONELYNESS! :-(

I always sit down like in the photo you see here and think for a few minutes. I don’t think about anything in particular. Just whatever comes to mind. After a few minutes I begin to unpack. I have an aversion to hotel rooms because at times I feel like I’m the only person in the world stuck inside one tiny room forever without any doors or windows as the walls begin to close in on me. No, I’m not some Looney-Toons freak. I’m not even claustrophobic. Just lonely…

I’m not always alone, though, but these times are few and far between. One year while flying into Sarajevo, Bosnia, I was forced to stay a night in London. I had booked a flight on Air Bosna from Chicago to Sarajevo. Well, and I bullsh*! you not, while flying over the North Atlantic Ocean to a connecting flight at Gatwick, mid flight, Air Bosna decides to go out of business. When I landed and tried to board my paid for Air Bosnia flight, a direct flight from Gatwick to Sarajevo, I was informed of the unfortunate news. I was also told that I was on my own with no chance of a refund, no flight voucher, hotel voucher, no nothing. Air Bosnia quit to exist and there was nothing I could do but purchase another ticket out of the UK or apply for a British immigration visa.

Highly upset, to put if very mildly, I bought a new ticket. While standing in line to get this ticket I became more and more upset. By the time I got to the ticket counter I might as well have been at war with the world. The ticket agent, I soon would learn, might as well had been at war with those standing in line waiting to be helped!!!

I was told I had a four hour layover in Ljubljana. I had never heard of this place and had no idea where it was so I asked. Hahaha! Man, you would have thought I just slapped the ticket agent right in the face. She started screaming at me saying I was just another typical American, ignorant and oblivious to the world around me outside of the United States. “You Americans are so Geographically blind!” I swear, she literally screamed that at me.

I just stood there a bit shocked at first but then I began to become a bit amused. After she was done with her insulting attack I asked her if she had ever heard of New Braunfels, Texas or Hernando, Mississippi or even Corpus Christi, Texas. She stated no, of course. I raised my voice a little bit as I leaned over the counter closer to here and said, “then how in the hell am I ignorant and stupid because I don’t know where some tiny city known as Ljubljana, Slovenia is located! She tried not to crack a smile but, it was too late, I had seen it. ;-)

I asked her where she was from. She told me Somalia originally but had been in the UK for over 10 years. I asked here what time she got off work. I then told her I had a reservation at the Gatwick Airport Hotel asking her to accompany me to dinner at the hotel restaurant. She looked at me with suspicious eyes but said she would be there.

After checking in I went through my routine: walk in, look around, sit on the bed and think for a few minutes then unpack. I took a shower, put on some fresh clothes after hitting them with an iron and went down to the restaurant. I really had a nice time and it felt good to actually be sitting with someone talking rather than drinking by myself in that damn room. After dinner two were sharing a drink in that damn room…

After this experience I dislike hotel rooms even more. Throughout my travels me meeting someone like this has only happened once. And I cannot bring myself to call a prostitute. I just can’t do it. The only time I did something like that was in Seattle on a job. I had a partner who wanted to stop at this “spa”. Well, the spa turned out to be a whore-house and I got a “massage” only - that was as far as it went. Hey, stop looking at me like that! I’m serious! This was when I was in my early 20s and I truly didn’t know it was a whore-house…initially. I left 100 dollars poorer feeling like I had made a mistake.

When I end up in a hotel it is usually (99.9%) because I have to be there for one reason or another - not by choice. I just don’t like them! They are the most lonely and depressing walls to have to be surrounded by…

Sometimes as I sit on the bed thinking, I wish I had the ability to just fly away….

But at least now I know where Ljubljana is! ;-)

BA Flight 149 Kuwait City

BA Flight 149 Kuwait City

A shot of BA flight 149 though the windows of the terminal building at Kuwait City airport. This was the plane that was delayed and then directed to land at Kuwait City with spec ops and intelligence personnel onboard during the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. They disappeared into the shadows on landing and the passengers left from onboard became part of Saddams human shield. UK government took the decision to send the flight in with full knowledge that Iraqi forces were in Kuwait and that the passengers onboard were at risk of being detained by the Iraqis. This was established during legal proceedings made against the UK government by US passengers that were onboard the flight. The UK government paid out compensation to these passengers for their suffering. UK citizens onboard are still to receive satisfaction.

BRAY AIR DISPLAY 2008

BRAY AIR DISPLAY 2008

C-17 GLOBEMASTER III

Mission
The C-17 Globemaster III is the newest, most flexible cargo aircraft to enter the airlift force. The C-17 is capable of rapid strategic delivery of troops and all types of cargo to main operating bases or directly to forward bases in the deployment area. The aircraft can perform tactical airlift and airdrop missions and can also transport litters and ambulatory patients during aeromedical evacuations when required. The inherent flexibility and performance of the C-17 force improve the ability of the total airlift system to fulfill the worldwide air mobility requirements of the United States.

The ultimate measure of airlift effectiveness is the ability to rapidly project and sustain an effective combat force close to a potential battle area. Threats to U.S. interests have changed in recent years, and the size and weight of U.S.-mechanized firepower and equipment have grown in response to improved capabilities of potential adversaries. This trend has significantly increased air mobility requirements, particularly in the area of large or heavy outsize cargo. As a result, newer and more flexible airlift aircraft are needed to meet potential armed contingencies, peacekeeping or humanitarian missions worldwide. The C-17 is capable of meeting today's demanding airlift missions.

Features
Reliability and maintainability are two outstanding benefits of the C-17 system. Current operational requirements impose demanding reliability and maintainability. These requirements include an aircraft mission completion success probability rate of 92 percent, only 20 aircraft maintenance man-hours per flying hour, and full and partial mission availability rates of 74.7 and 82.5 percent, respectively. The Boeing warranty assures these figures will be met.

The C-17 measures 174 feet long (53 meters) with a wingspan of 169 feet, 10 inches (51.75 meters). The aircraft is powered by four, fully reversible, Federal Aviation Administration-certified F117-PW-100 engines (the military designation for the commercial Pratt & Whitney PW2040), currently used on the Boeing 757. Each engine is rated at 40,440 pounds of thrust. The thrust reversers direct the flow of air upward and forward to avoid ingestion of dust and debris. Maximum use has been made of off-the-shelf and commercial equipment, including Air Force-standardized avionics.

The aircraft is operated by a crew of three (pilot, copilot and loadmaster), reducing manpower requirements, risk exposure and long-term operating costs. Cargo is loaded onto the C-17 through a large aft door that accommodates military vehicles and palletized cargo. The C-17 can carry virtually all of the Army's air-transportable equipment.

Maximum payload capacity of the C-17 is 170,900 pounds (77,519 kilograms), and its maximum gross takeoff weight is 585,000 pounds (265,352 kilograms). With a payload of 169,000 pounds (76,657 kilograms) and an initial cruise altitude of 28,000 feet (8,534 meters), the C-17 has an unrefueled range of approximately 2,400 nautical miles. Its cruise speed is approximately 450 knots (.76 Mach). The C-17 is designed to airdrop 102 paratroopers and equipment.

The design of the aircraft allows it to operate through small, austere airfields. The C-17 can take off and land on runways as short as 3,500 feet (1,064 meters) and only 90 feet wide (27.4 meters). Even on such narrow runways, the C-17 can turn around using a three-point star turn and its backing capability.

Background
The C-17 made its maiden flight on Sept. 15, 1991, and the first production model was delivered to Charleston Air Force Base, S.C., June 14, 1993. The first squadron of C-17s, the 17th Airlift Squadron, was declared operationally ready Jan. 17, 1995. The Air Force originally programmed to buy a total of 120 C-17s, with the last one being delivered in November 2004. Current budget plans involve purchasing 190 aircraft.

The original 120 C-17s were based at Charleston AFB; McChord AFB, Wash., (first aircraft arrived in July 1999); Altus AFB, Okla.; and at an Air National Guard unit in Jackson, Miss. In August 2005, March Air Reserve Base, Calif., began basing the first of eight aircraft. In February 2006, Hickam AFB, Hawaii, received its first C-17.

The C-17 is operated by the Air Mobility Command at the 60th Airlift Wing and the 349th Air Mobility Wing (Associate Reserve) at Travis AFB, Calif.; 62nd Airlift Wing and 446th Airlift Wing (Associate Reserve) at McChord AFB, Wash.; 437th Airlift Wing and 315th Airlift Wing (Associate Reserve) at Charleston AFB, S.C.; the 305th Air Mobility Wing, McGuire AFB, N.J.; and the 172nd Airlift Wing, Mississippi ANG. Additionally, Air Force Materiel Command operates two C-17s at Edwards AFB, Calif., and Pacific Air Forces operates eight aircraft each at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska and Hickam AFB, Hawaii (Associate Guard). The Air Force Reserve Command operates eight aircraft at March Air Reserve Base, Calif; and Air Education and Trainin

Redstone Ballistic Missile

Redstone Ballistic Missile

The display reads:

REDSTONE BALLISTIC MISSILE

The Redstone Ballistic Missile, also known as the Surface to Surface Missile (SSM)-A-14, and Programmed Guided Missile (PGM)-11A, was a development from the German V-2 Rocket of the Second World War, and eventually named for Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, where it was designed. It met the U.S. Army's requirement for a ballistic missile that could outrange conventional artillery, development starting in 1951, and the first missile fired in August of 1953. The Redstone proved to be very reliable, and accurate, with thirty-five of the first thirty-eight missiles fired reaching the target. The missile's supersonic speed made it immune to any countermeasures known at the time.

The flight program was fed into the guidance system prior to launch, and the signals played back to the system during flight to control its trajectory. Accuracy was within a 1000 foot radius from the intended target. Due to its preprogrammed guidance system, the missile could not be diverted by exterior means.

The Redstone Missile was powered by a Rocketdyne A-6 engine, generating 78,000 pounds of thrust. This thrust could be controlled for 96 to 121 seconds to adjust range. The Rocketdyne engine burned a fuel composed of 75% alchol and 25% water, a motor driven by steam produced by hydrogen peroxide drove the turbopumps to provide the initial fuel pressure. The missile body and the thrust unit drop off at the end of the thrust phase allowing the more aerodynamic guidance module and warhead to continue to the target.

The firing of the Redstone missile is in four phases. They are:

Phase I: The thrust unit fires, propelling the entire missile towards the target.

Phase II: The thrust unit separates from the warhead / guidance section during flee flight. The thrust unit falling short of the target due to its lack of aerodynamic shape.

Phase III: Initial corrections are made to the trajectory of the warhead / guidance system module.

Phase IV: Final corrections are made during this terminal phase of flight.

The Redstone Missile System could be assembled, erected, fueled, aimed, and fired in less than two hours.

With research for the Pershing Missile System approved in 1958, the obsolescent Redstone was phased out of service, finally leaving in 1961.

(CNN) -- A U.S. Marine helicopter's emergency landing into the ocean in Hawaii killed one Marine and injured three others Tuesday evening, the Marine Corps said Wednesday.

Two of the injured crew members were in critical condition in a Honolulu hospital, while the third Marine was in stable condition, according to the military.

The CH-53D Sea Stallion helicopter, carrying four crew members assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 363, landed in shallow water about two miles from the Marines Corps Air Station at Kaneohe Bay at about 7:20 p.m. Tuesday, it said.

The three injured crew members were flown to Queens Medical Center in Honolulu.

"The downed helicopter remains on its side in Kaneohe Bay and a salvage operation is being planned," a Marine statement said.

The name of the Marine who was killed will not be made public until a day after relatives are told, the statement said.

The Adventures of Tintin, vol. 7: The Castafiore Emerald / Flight 714 / Tintin and the Picaros (3 Volumes in 1)

Three classic graphic novels in one deluxe hardcover edition: The Castafiore Emerald, Flight 714 to Sydney, and Tintin and the Picaros.

The Castafiore Emerald was Herge's third-to-last completed Tintin story, and the most unconventional. Rather than a globe-trotting adventure, it takes place completely at Marlinspike Hall, where an incapacitated Captain Haddock is being nursed back to health by an unwelcome visitor in the form of Bianca Castafiore, the "Milanese Nightingale" who then suffers a devastating loss ("Mercy, my jewels!"). It's disfavored by some fans due to the lack of action, but the locked-room mystery, character interactions, running gags, and crazy Calculus inventions keep it fun and definitely worth reading.
Flight 714, Herge's second-to-last completed Tintin story, is a high adventure featuring a gallery of returning characters, though it's a new character, Laszlo Carreidas, "the millionaire who never laughs," who starts the trouble by inviting Tintin and his friends to skip their commercial flight to Sidney to accompany him on his private jet. That leads to a complicated ransom plot, and the action just gets more outlandish from there. Suspend disbelief, though, and Flight 714 is one of Tintin's more thrilling rides.
Finished in 1976, Tintin and the Picaros was Herge's final completed Tintin adventure, and interestingly, he used it to return to a scene from 40 years earlier: The South American republic of San Theodoros, where Tintin met General Alcazar in The Broken Ear. Alcazar is again facing trouble from his rival, General Tapioca, and numerous other characters from the past weave themselves into the story. While Tintin and the Picaros is entertaining, Herge was slow to finish it, and his world-weariness is reflected in the attitudes of some of the characters.
The 3-in-1 format provides excellent value, but the small size (about 40% smaller than the single-story paperbacks) makes it harder to enjoy the detail in Herge's layouts. --David Horiuchi

Dolphins Swimming Beside us on the Bay of Islands Boat Tour, New Zealand

Dolphins Swimming Beside us on the Bay of Islands Boat Tour, New Zealand

Dolphin leaping alongside the boat. The dolphins are very social (according to the announcer and captain), and come up frequently enough that the crew has given each dolphin a name :)
This was on our Bay of Islands boat tour. It was an awesome tour where we saw dolphins up close and RODE THROUGH HOLE IN THE ROCK on the boat. :)

This was taken on Day 4 of our family trip to New Zealand & Australia. On this day we took an all-day motorcoach tour to the Bay of Islands and the Waitangi Treaty Grounds.
Our Trip Summary:
Day 3 (June 15): Spent the day walking around Auckland. Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand with almost 1.4 million people, nearly ? of New Zealand's population.
Day 4 ( June 16): All-day Motorcoach tour to Waitangi (pronounced why tang eee), and the Bay of Islands, where we went on a long boat ride.
Day 5 (June 17): All-day Motorcoach tour to the Waitomo Glow Worm Caves (pronounced like why toe moe), and from there we went to an awesome and fun farm just outside of the city of Rotorua (population 68,000, named after Lake Rotorua, a lake formed from a volcanic caldera), and from there went to a Maori (pronounced Maw ree) reservation where we saw an aboriginal performance, and also went to the Rotorua Hot Springs.
Day 6 (June 18): We took the Overlander passenger train from Auckland (on the north side of the North Island) to Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, on the south side of the North Island. The New Zealand rail gauge is 3 feet 6 inches (107.7 cm), which is 3/4 (or 75%) of the North American standard gauge.
Day 7 (June 19): We spent the day in Wellington, going to a cool museum and riding on their steep cable car. New Zealand cities are very hilly (with very large hills), kind of like San Francisco.
Day 8 (June 20): We took a ferry from Wellington, on the North Island to a small town called Picton, on the South Island, and then took the TranzCoastal train from Picton to Christchurch, New Zealand.
Day 9 (June 21): We went skiing on Mount Hutt at Methaven, about 71 miles (115 km) outside of Christchurch. It was so fun!!!
Day 10 (June 22): After touring the Christchurch Cathedral in the morning, we took a flight from Christchurch to Sydney, Australia.
Day 11 (June 23): We spent the day around Sydney. We went to the aquarium, then in the afternoon, we took the SydneyLink electrified commuter rail train, with standard 4 foot 8? inch (143.5 inches) gauge to Mount Colah, Australia, where we ate at a friend's house.
Day 12 (June 24): We took a coach tour to a nature center near Sydney, and from there went to the Blue Mountains where we rode the world's steepest railway and saw the Three Sisters. We then went back to Sydney
Days 13 (Sydney to Los Angeles) and 14 (Los Angeles To St. Louis) were spent getting back home to the St. Louis area. 14 hour flights suck, and that's the only negative part about having to take an awesome trip like this (besides, of course, the cost, LOL :)
Since my dad's a pilot, we got huge discounts on flights and hotels, so it was almost as cheap for us as it is for an average person to take a domestic flight on a domestic trip. :)

Hole in the Rock Island Up Ahead on the Bay of Islands Boat Tour, New Zealand

View of the Hole in the Rock Island from our boat, as we were heading towards it on our Bay of Islands boat tour. It was an awesome tour where we saw dolphins up close and RODE THROUGH HOLE IN THE ROCK on the boat. :)
We went right through the hole in the rock! :D

Jake Putnam and Former New Jersey state Senator David Friedland

Jake Putnam and Former New Jersey state Senator David Friedland

Senator Friedland was a great friend of Frank Brennan. A few years after this photo was taken David ended up on the wrong side of the FBI and did time in prison...but we liked him a lot---David had powerful charisma and charm.

In the 1960's and 70's, Dave Friedland was the quintessential New Jersey politician. As Hudson County's version of the Renaissance man, he was a poet, lawyer to the Teamsters, legislator, scuba diver, fugitive, and, finally, inmate.

Dave Friedland also possessed remarkable powers of persuasion.

One day, on the New Jersey State Assembly floor, David Friedland worked himself into a frenzy prophesizing the doom that would befall New Jersey, Society and the Universe, if a certain bill passed.

"Women will no longer bear children...The sun shall cease rising in the East...Stars shall come loose in the night sky and fall into the ocean...

His speech was cut short by a lunch break. As Dave Friedland was about to leave the building, an aide, out of breath, came running up to him.

"Sir, you've got a phone call."

Not breaking his stride, without turning to look at the functionary, "Tell them, I'll call back."

Braking by pressing his heels into the marble floor, the aide grabbed Dave Friedland, by the sleeve.

"You've got a call."

Assemblyman Friedland knew what a call was. He immediately turned and hurried to his office. Pushing past a gaggle of statehouse favor seekers Friedland made his way to a back room. Dave closed and locked the door before picking up the phone.

J. V. Kenny, political boss of Hudson County for two generations, was on the other end.

"Are you out of your mind! That's my bill! I've been working all year to get that thing passed! What are you doing! Stop it! STOP IT! STOP IT!!!"

And then hung up.

Later that afternoon after lunch, as the Assembly re-convened, Dave Friedland rose to speak.

"Now that I've pointed out the few minor flaws, imperfections, merely cosmetic blemishes so-to-speak, of this fine bill, let me now relate all its good points, the benefits, the bounty, the cornucopia...."

The bill passed.

From the New York Times
By MICHEL MARRIOTT
Published: December 28, 1987

After almost two years as one of the Federal authorities' most wanted fugitives, former New Jersey State Senator David J. Friedland was snared last week by his own success as an operator of a chain of scuba diving shops on an island in the Indian Ocean, a Federal marshal said yesterday.

''I can only tell you that David Friedland was captured because he was really too successful,'' said Arthur Borinsky, the United States Marshal for New Jersey. ''If he had elected to become low profile, he might still be at large.''

Tanned and smiling, Mr. Friedland arrived at Kennedy International Airport yesterday in the custody of Federal marshals after a flight from the Republic of Maldive, a scattering of 1,087 islands southwest of Sri Lanka. 'Good to Be Back'

He disappeared in 1985 while awaiting sentencing for taking kickbacks from a pension fund of Local 701 of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

The former Democratic legislator is scheduled for arraignment today in Federal District court in Brooklyn.

Under heavy guard, including an officer with an M-16 rifle, Mr. Friedland was whisked through a throng of reporters and security men into an awaiting sedan parked at the edge of the airport terminal. He was taken to the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan. He will be transferred to New Jersey later.

''I had a good time, but I'll tell you it's good to be back in the United States,'' he said. He vowed to ''fight whatever happens.''

Mr. Borinsky said Mr. Friedland had told him that he was ready to come back to the United States when the local authorities arrested him on the island of Male. ''The bottom line that David has told me is that he really got tired of running,'' Mr. Borinsky said.

Outlandish Life Style

Mr. Friedland disappeared on Sept. 2, 1985, after faking his drowning death off Grand Bahama Island. At the time he was facing sentencing for a 1980 fraud conviction and a trial on charges of another scheme that could have resulted in life in prison if he had been convicted.

United States and international law-enforcement agencies tracked Mr. Friedland's globe trotting in such locations as Kenya, Paris, Venice, Hong Kong and Singapore. But it was in Maldive, apparently, where his life style marked him for capture.

There, he lived ''very well,'' said Mr. Borinsky, declining to give specific details on how well Mr. Friedland lived in the 18 months that he lived under name of Richard Smith Harley.

Mr. Friedland, 50 years old, traveling on a fake United States passport, quickly became a highly successful owner of five scuba diving businesses and lived a life that exalted his success and comfort.

So public and outlandish was his life, Mr. Borinsky said, that Mr. Friedland, posed for a M

Waiting for the return trip to Singapore at Hong Kong Airport

Waiting for the return trip to Singapore at Hong Kong Airport

In general, 2 thumbs up or 4 stars for Hong Kong airport's efficiency. One thing which is very important, trolleys are free. There are 2 types we can use, the bigger ones for the bigger check ins, then once you are entering the lobby to the gates, smaller ones for your hand carries. In America, it cost USD4 or USD7 to use a luggage trolley.

Checking in was slightly slow but when it was our turn we know why. Services are very personalized! The lady was patience enough to make sure all luggage were weighed to ensure flight policy was followed, but seeing one of them tipping the weighing scale, she helped us distribute items around so all check-ins were ok. She was very cheery and did not show any displeasure at all. I was pretty impressed! After living in US for more than 3 years, I wasn't sure I like to fly again but not this time.

Customs are cool and quick. Custom officers are super polite. They direct you to the lines that are shorter, and they did everything for you from putting your stuff into plastic containers and giving you a tag for identification. We saw a long line but it shorten progressively very quickly without fuss and WITHOUT ANY FORMS OF SHOUTING. I wasn't shouted at, I wasn't pushed around, noone looked at me suspiciously, I wasn't asked to take out my shoes an so forth. We weren't rushed but yet it took us very little time to get through.

Then I was done. I remained a happy tourist.

Olympic Airlines (Greek: ?????????? ???????????, Olybiakes Aerogrammes - OA) was the flag carrier airline of Greece, based in Athens. It operated services to 37 domestic destinations and to 32 destinations world-wide. Its main base was at Athens International Airport, with hubs at Thessaloniki International Airport, "Macedonia" and Rhodes International Airport, "Diagoras".
On March 6, 2009, the Greek State announced it had reached an agreement to sell the Flight operations, Ground Handling operations and Technical Base of the Group to Marfin Investment Group, the largest Greek investment fund, thus ending a 35-year period of state ownership.

On 29 September 2009 Olympic Airlines ceased all of its operations and most of its flights and Olympic Air, the new airline commenced flights. Olympic Airlines continued to be responsible for some flights to Greek islands designated as public service as well as some flights to destinations outside the European Union (Cairo, Alexandria, Tel Aviv, Beirut, Belgrade) until the Greek State conducted a public tender and redistributed the routes.
Back in 1992, the airline operated a summer scheduled service linking Thessaloniki with Paris/CDG. Delivered new to the airline during the previous decade, Charlie-Golf still sported the livery at time of delivery.

Toronto-bound Megabus Double Deck Coach

Toronto-bound Megabus Double Deck Coach

This is the long-distance coach that we took from New York City back to Toronto. It's a 10-hour ride. This photo was taken in Buffalo, New York. In less than two hours and we were back in downtown Toronto.

A flight from New York La Guardia (LGA) to Toronto technically is 45 minutes. But La Guardia is a good 45 minutes minimum from Manhattan. You need to be at LGA 1.5 hours ahead to clear customs, immigration and security. LGA is notorious for delays at any time of the day, any day of the year. Add an hour easily to potentional delays. When I get to Toronto airport, it's out in the suburb and it takes me 1.5 hours to get home downtown.

45 mins + 45 mins + 1.5 hrs + 1 hr + 1.5 hrs = 5.5 hrs.

Suddenly a 10-hour bus ride over-night where you don't waste half-a-day of day time lining up at the airport doesn't sound bad at all.

Some people were uncomfortable that there was a dearth of hittable visitors at the museum, if the online reviews are to be believed. They're right, and they would be better off spending their time at a local Steinway Beer Garden. But for those who have a few hours free, the library and the full-motion flight simulators will keep them occupied in addition to the static displays. Those who are younger or who manage to retain their curiosity have the large number of education programs - and the full-motion flight simulators. All museums use education and various programs to support a largely behind the scene research, but the MoF seem to be a heavy advocate of this compared to many other museums.

Come to think of it, the Guggenheim hosts late night drinking events. The MoF can hold a two drink minimum for the full-motion simulators, a five drink-minimum for aircraft recognition, and an alcohol-free human contortion contest on the children's ride like the one on the lower left side of this picture. These activities can easily support additional research and expand the exhibits available.

Selfridges Department Store, Oxford Street, London

Selfridges is a chain of department stores in the United Kingdom. It was founded by American entrepreneur Harry Gordon Selfridge. The flagship store in London's Oxford Street is the second largest shop in the UK (after Harrods) and was opened on 15 March 1909. [1]

H. Gordon Selfridge was born in 1858 in Ripon, Wisconsin, and in 1879 joined Field, Leiter and Company (later to become Marshall Field & Company), where he worked under the Chicago retailer of the same name. He worked his way up through the firm, married into the prominent Buckingham family, and amassed the fortune with which he built his new London store.

Selfridge's innovative marketing led to his success. He tried to make shopping a fun adventure instead of a chore. He put merchandise on display so customers could examine it, put the highly profitable perfume counter front-and-centre on the ground floor, and established policies that made it safe and easy for customers to shop — techniques that have been adopted by modern department stores the world over.

Either Selfridge or Marshall Field is popularly held to have coined the phrase "the customer is always right",[2] and he did use it regularly in his extensive advertising. The phrase, however, predated Selfridge by centuries; he may have assimilated it while purchasing Persian rugs in Mumbai.[citation needed]

He attracted shoppers with educational and scientific exhibits. He was himself interested in education and science, and believed that the displays would introduce potential new customers to Selfridges, generating both immediate and long-term sales.

In 1909, after the first cross-Channel flight, Louis Bleriot's monoplane was exhibited at Selfridges, where it was seen by 12,000 people. The first public demonstration of television was by John Logie Baird from the first floor of Selfridges from 1-27 April 1925.

Oxford Street store in London.A Milne-Shaw seismograph was set up on the Selfridge store’s third floor in 1932, attached to one of the building's main stanchions, unaffected by traffic or shoppers. It recorded the Belgian earthquake of 11 June 1938 which was also felt in London. At the outbreak of war, the seismograph was moved from its original site near the Post Office to another part of the store. In 1947, the seismograph was given to the British Museum.

The provincial stores were sold to the John Lewis Partnership in the 1940s. The remaining Oxford Street store was acquired in 1951 by the Liverpool-based Lewis's chain of department stores, which was in turn taken over in 1965 by the Sears group of Charles Clore.[3] Between 1998 and 2003, the store supplemented its 540,000-square-foot (50,000 m?) main store with a 150,000-square-foot (14,000 m?) store at Trafford Centre in Manchester, a 125,000-square-foot (11,600 m?) store in Exchange Square, also in Manchester, and a 200,000-square-foot (20,000 m?) store in the Birmingham Bull Ring shopping complex. In March 1998 Selfridges had acquired a new logo at use to the present which came in tandem with the opening of the Trafford Centre outlet and Selfridges demerger from Sears.

Selfridges in Birmingham.Selfridge stores are known for architectural excellence. Their main store was designed by Daniel Burnham, who also crafted Marshall Field's main store in his home town of Chicago. The London store was built in phases, the first phase consisting only of the nine-and-a-half bays closest to the Duke Street corner.[4] A scheme to erect a massive tower above the store was never carried out.[5] Also involved in the design of the store were the American architect Francis Swales, who worked on decorative details, and the British architect Frank Atkinson.[6] The 160,000-square-foot (15,000 m?) Birmingham store, designed by architects Future Systems, is covered in 15,000 spun aluminium discs. The store is highly distinctive for its yellow carrier bags.

In 2003, the chain was acquired by Canada's Galen Weston for ?598 million. Weston, a retailing expert who is the owner of Canada's major supermarket chains Loblaws and No Frills among others, has chosen to invest in renovation of the Oxford Street store, rather than to carry out planned expansion to Leeds, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Bristol, and Glasgow which appears to have been abandoned due to plans for stores at the locations having been suspended since 2003 and the planned construction of the Glasgow store having not commenced as of 2007 even though Selfridges own a site in the city.[7] The Chief Executive is Irish retailer, Paul Kelly. Kelly has worked for the Weston organisation since the mid-eighties

Bee on Lavender Stem (Macro) Llandudno North Wales

Bee on Lavender Stem (Macro) Llandudno North Wales

Bees (seen here Llandudno North Wales) are flying insects closely related to wasps and ants, and are known for their role in pollination and for producing honey and beeswax. Bees are a monophyletic lineage within the superfamily Apoidea, presently classified by the unranked taxon name Anthophila. There are nearly 20,000 known species of bees in seven to nine recognized families, though many are undescribed and the actual number is probably higher. They are found on every continent except Antarctica, in every habitat on the planet that contains insect-pollinated flowering plants.
Bees are adapted for feeding on nectar and pollen, the former primarily as an energy source and the latter primarily for protein and other nutrients. Most pollen is used as food for larvae.
Bees have a long proboscis (a complex "tongue") that enables them to obtain the nectar from flowers. They have antennae almost universally made up of 13 segments in males and 12 in females, as is typical for the superfamily. Bees all have two pairs of wings, the hind pair being the smaller of the two; in a very few species, one sex or caste has relatively short wings that make flight difficult or impossible, but none are wingless.

Morphology of a female honey bee
The smallest bee is Trigona minima, a stingless bee whose workers are about 2.1 mm (5/64") long. The largest bee in the world is Megachile pluto, a leafcutter bee whose females can attain a length of 39 mm (1.5"). Members of the family Halictidae, or sweat bees, are the most common type of bee in the Northern Hemisphere, though they are small and often mistaken for wasps or flies.
The best-known bee species is the European honey bee, which, as its name suggests, produces honey, as do a few other types of bee. Human management of this species is known as beekeeping or apiculture.
Bees are the favorite meal of Merops apiaster, the bee-eater bird. Other common predators are kingbirds, mockingbirds, beewolves, and dragonflies.

The lavenders (Lavandula) are a genus of 39 species of flowering plants in the mint family, Lamiaceae. An Old World genus, distributed from Macaronesia (Cape Verde and Canary Islands and Madeira) across Africa, the Mediterranean, South-West Asia, Arabia, Western Iran and South-East India. It is thought the genus originated in Asia but is most diversified in its western distribution.
The genus includes annuals, herbaceous plants, subshrubs, and small shrubs. The native range extends across the Canary Islands, North and East Africa, Southern Europe and the Mediterranean, Arabia and India. Because the cultivated forms are planted in gardens worldwide, they are occasionally found growing wild as garden escapees, well beyond their natural range. However, since lavender cross-pollinates easily, there are countless variations within the species. The color of the flowers of some forms has come to be called lavender.

Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it (EXPLORE)

Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it (EXPLORE)

Seen in EXPLORE 27th February

The Greater Indian Hornbill is considered to be the largest member of the hornbill family. Scientifically known as Buceros bicornis, it is usually found inhabiting the forests of Indian subcontinent, the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra, Indonesia. The average lifespan of the Great Pied Hornbill of India exceeds 35 years and may go upto 50 years in captivity.

Common Names
Great Indian hornbill is known by a number of other names also, like Great hornbill, Great pied hornbill, Large pied hornbill and Concave-casqued hornbill.

Physical Traits
Great Indian Hornbill is a large bird, which grows to a height of around 100 to 120 cm. It wingspan measures somewhere around 150 cm and the tail feathers are 36 inches in length. The Great Hornbills of India have an average weight of 6.5 pounds. The bright yellow and black casque adorning the top of the huge bill of the bird adds to its magnificent appeal. The casque is hollow and used only at the time of aerial casque butting flights. The female hornbill is shorter than the male and has blue eyes instead of red.

Diet
The diet of the Great Pied Hornbill of India consists primarily of fruits. However, the bird supplements this with small mammals, birds, lizards, snakes and insects.

Behavior
The Great Pied Hornbills of India are known to form monogamous pair bonds. They are mostly seen in groups of 2-40 individuals. Great Indian hornbill forms a pair for many years and in some cases, for the entire lifetime. The female hornbill lays 1-2 eggs at a time.

Unique Nesting Ritual
At the time of nesting, the female hornbill starts living in a tree hollow sealed with dung and pellets of mud. The male collects the pellets, swallows them and regurgitates small saliva-cased building materials. This material is given to the female, along with food, through a slit in the tree seal. The process of incubation continues for 6-8 weeks. The female hornbill comes out only after she has molted and fresh feathers have grown on her and her young ones.

Status
The population of Great Pied Hornbill of India is declining over the years. The reason for this is habitat loss, along with hunting of the bird for food and for its casques. Great Indian Hornbill has also been listed in Appendix I of CITES and also as 'Lower Risk/Near Threatened' by USFWS.

Trivia

* Great Pied Hornbill is the largest hornbill species found on the Indian subcontinent.
* The wing beat of the Great hornbill can be heard more than half a mile away.
* Hornbill can eat upto 150 figs in one meal only.
* Male hornbills can die from exhaustion after the nesting process.
