Wonder What's Next

Wonder What's Next

Chevelle’s haunting, booming, and vitriolic sophomore release opens with a song about three brothers called "Family System" Given that the three Loeffler brothers comprise Chevelle, it's easy to imagine the source of the song. Singer/guitarist Pete, drummer Sam, and bassist Joe have an intuitive gift for melding melody and intense, brutal passion in a manner that recalls at various times Live, Taproot, and Tool. From the brutal plea of the dynamic "Forfeit" to the bombast of "An Evening with El Diablo," Chevelle’s earnest, less then groundbreaking modern rock captures an intensity that almost makes up for a sometimes cookie-cutter musical vibe. --Katherine Turman

Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu

Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu

Generation. (wikipedia)

Small ICBM Hard Mobile Launcher

Small ICBM Hard Mobile Launcher

Personal note: I have never before seen a military vehicle that so much looked like a full size GI Joe toy before.

---------------------------------

This vehicle was the last engineer model, or Engineering Test Unit (ETU), of a mobile, radiation-hardened, truck launcher designed to carry and launch the MGM-134A Small Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (unofficially known as “Midgetman”). It can travel up to 55mph on the highway, but it can also travel off the road. The vehicle is capable of using the trailer-mounted plow to dig the launcher into the earth for additional protection from a nuclear blast.

The ETU tractor-launcher combination weighs 239,000 lbs. and has a draw bar pull capability of more than 80,000 lbs. It is powered by a 1,200 jp. Rolls/Royce Perkins diesel engine that drives all eight tractor wheels through an electro-hydraultic transmission.

The ETU was designed and built by Boeing Aerospace and electronics, and by Loral Defense Systems Division. It was delivered to the Air Force in December 1988 and tested until 1991 at Malmstrom AFB, Montana. The Museum acquired it in 1992 after development of the MGM-134A SICBM was canceled.

1895 Peugeot front

1895 Peugeot front

Peugeot is a major French car brand, part of PSA Peugeot Citroen, the second largest European carmaker.
The family business that precedes the current Peugeot company was founded in 1810. On 20 November 1858, Emile Peugeot applied for the lion trademark. The company produced its first automobile in 1891. Due to family discord, Armand Peugeot in 1896 founded the Societe des Automobiles Peugeot.
Peugeot's roots go back to 19th-century coffee mill and bicycle manufacturing. The Peugeot company and family is originally from Sochaux, France. Peugeot retains a large manufacturing plant and Peugeot Museum there. It also sponsors the Sochaux football club, founded in 1928 by a member of the Peugeot family.
The Peugeot family of Valentigney, Montbeliard, Franche-Comte, France, began in the manufacturing business in the 1700s. In 1842 they added production of coffee, pepper and salt grinders. The company's entry into the vehicle market was by means of crinoline dresses, which used steel rods, leading to umbrella frames, saw blades, wire wheels, and ultimately bicycles. Armand Peugeot introduced his "Le Grand Bi" penny-farthing in 1882, along with a range of other bicycles. Peugeot bicycles continued to be built until very recently, although the car company and bike company parted ways in 1926.
Armand Peugeot became interested in the automobile early on, and after meeting with Gottlieb Daimler and others, was convinced of its viability. The first Peugeot automobile (a three-wheeled steam-powered car designed by Leon Serpollet) was produced in 1889; only four examples were made . Steam power was heavy and bulky and required lengthy warmup times. In 1890, after meeting Gottlieb Daimler and Emile Levassor, steam was abandoned in favour of a four-wheeled car with a petrol-fuelled internal combustion engine built by Panhard under Daimler licence. The car was more sophisticated than many of its contemporaries, with a three-point suspension and a sliding-gear transmission.
Peugeot Type 19 (1899)
Peugeot 403
Peugeot 202
Peugeot 601 C Eclipse 1934 Pourtout
More cars followed, twenty-nine being built in 1892, forty in 1894, seventy-two in 1895, 156 in 1898, and fully three hundred in 1899. These early models were given "Type" numbers with the Type 12, for example, dating from 1895. Peugeot became the first manufacturer to fit rubber tires (solid, rather than pneumatic) to a petrol-powered car that year.[ Peugeot was also an early pioneer in motor racing, entering the 1894 Paris-Rouen Rally with five car (placing second, third {Pierre Giffard, who had conceived the trial}, and fifth {Koechlin})[and the 1895 Paris-Bordeaux with three, where they were beaten by Panhard's car (despite an average speed of 20.8 km/h (12.9 mph and taking the 31,500 franc prize. This also marked the debut of Michelin pneumatic tyres in racing, also on a Peugeot; they proved insufficiently durable. Nevertheless, the vehicles were still very much horseless carriages in appearance and were steered by a tiller.

My friend Steve and his Morgan/Fresian mare, Mariah, pulling his reproduction wagonette. This vehicle is pretty convenient for modern driving because it is a cut under or fifth wheel design. If you look right behind the front wheels, you'll see that that there is a cut out in the body of the carriage that is just big enough for the front wheel of the carriage to tuck under without hitting the body of the vehicle. That makes this carriage very maneuverable.

    wheel studs
  • (Wheel stud) Wheel studs are the bolts that the wheel of an automobile rest on. Lug nuts are fastened to the wheel stud to secure the wheel. Wheel studs can be either factory equipment or aftermarket add-ons. They are semi-permanently mounted directly to the vehicle brake drum or disk hub.

  • Bolts used to attach the wheel to an axle. Generally these studs have round heads with a knurl or fine spline immediately below the head that is the same width as the thickness of the axle face.

Bristol Commercial Vehicles Ltd BS4

Bristol Commercial Vehicles Ltd BS4

Bristols - and the men who build them

'Bristol chassis are manufactured by small identifiable teams of men in such a way that a sense of responsibility and pride in the finished product are encouraged to an extent that is rare today'

They don’t make them like that any more. This is a common enough saying nowadays, almost always conveying regret. Sometimes it is merely an expression of prejudice, but there is sometimes substance in the underlying conviction that modern design is apt to be let down by inadequate detail work and skimped assembly.

A visit to the works of Bristol Commercial Vehicles Ltd. can be recommended as a tonic to operators who wonder whether the age of enthusiasm and personal responsibility at all levels is dead. I visit many chassis-building works, but I do not know of another where more interest and pride in the quality of the product can be found. And it extends from the management to the craftsman on the sbop floor.

At first glance the machine shops at the main Bath Road works in Brislington, Bristol, look much like those of another concern of comparable size and character. Although Bristol vehicles nowadays have engines and, in the case of the LH. other mechanical units which are brought out in complete form, the tradition of being self-sufficient for many smaller parts is still very much alive. Closer examination reveals some of the little touches which can make quite a difference in service.

A good example is the thread-rolling process which not only gives a superb finish but also adds immensely to the strength of screw threads produced, as compared to cutting. All Bristol wheel studs, the ball pins used in steering linkage and such parts as the studs used in the assembly of the drop-centre rear axles in the RE and VR models all have rolled threads. As another instance of the Bristol approach, brake drums are machined inside and out, with a 50 micro-inch limit on the internal finish.

Much skill goes into gear manufacture. Complete gear boxes are no longer made, but the drop-centre axles mentioned above and the remainder of the RE and VR transmission incorporate Bristol made gearing. The gear boxes used on the RE and VR models incorporate sets of epicyclic gearing supplied by Self-Changing Gears Ltd. but use casings and transfer gears, etc., produced at Bristol.

Pack carburizing is used to give consistent standards of hardening and every tenth gear is submitted to a hardness test. Every gear is crack-detected. MAAG gear-grinding machines are used and the grinding process may take up to two hours per gear. Another MAAG unit is used to check finished gear profiles, every sixth gear being checked as long as the profiles are within the required limits. Individual checks are made if discrepencies are discovered.

A pen traces the profile magnified 500 times and this enables the tooth profile to be accurately checked — 'barrelling' or variation of the curvature must be within 0.0006 in. and the surface finish within 21 micro-inches.

Crown-and-pinion gears are lapped in pairs and are never allowed to touch each other on the floor, thus avoiding burrs which could later cause trouble.

So far as assembly is concerned, the method used at the Chatsworth Road assembly works, a mile or so from the main factory, is largely to rely on single or two-man teams. These complete a unit, sub-assembly or even the chassis assembly itself. Building 18-20 chassis per week, it is possible in this way to give each man sufficient involvement in the job to give him a sense of responsibility.

Small teams of assembly fitters in the frame shop thus build up complete frames for example. One fitter and his mate build all the differentials and another the transmission sub-assemblies. Every axle is checked for correct meshing of gears after it is completed.

A fitter and mate team is responsible for the assembly of all major units into each frame, for which they are normally allowed 12 hours. A record is kept of the serial numbers of the chassis built up by each team. My own past experience of a goods-vehicle manufacturer using this method indicates that the standard of assembly is likely to be considerably better than applies when each man repeatedly fits only a small item to the chassis.

The chassis assembly fitter is responsible for water pipe assembly but fuel and air pipes are added by a pipe fitter and an electrician carries out the wiring. Air pipes are, incidentally, of stainless steel as standard on Bristol chassis.

As the chassis takes shape it is rolled in stages towards the front of the assembly shop, although there is no moving assembly-line track in the sense associated with mass-production chassis. Finally, the stage is reached when the engine can be started and the chassis driven away.

Any items found to be not working correctly are corrected in a rectification bay. The chassis test department then takes each chassis to its test running shop. The tester tests all units that can be

Lotus Cortinia Mk1

Lotus Cortinia Mk1

Only the very early cars had an oil pressure warning light and single indicator repeater within the speedo housing. Later cars had two indicator lights.
The centre console on the Lotus was unique as the cars had a dashtop ashtray, so had no need for the usual one by the gearlever.
The column switchgear is slightly shorter than in the standard Cortinas due to different diameter of the wood-rimmed steering wheel.
A 1963-spec Lotus Cortina steering wheel had studs set into the back of it, and in good condition is worth ?2000.
The front wings’ lips on the Lotus were rolled to allow fitment of the wider wheels (5.5J steels or alloys such as BRMs). The top joint between the wings and front panel should also be blended in at the ends rather than a continuous line. We have absolutely no idea why.
The bonnet badge on pre-Aeroflows reads Consul rather than Cortina, and OE ones are worth a fortune. Also the dash script on the first Lotus cars reads ‘deluxe’, and only later changed to ‘Cortina’.
Only the early cars have a smooth-topped oil filler cap, plain ‘Tudor’ washer fluid bottle and FoMoCo caps on the fluid reservoirs. And genuine bonnet stays are chrome with a black grommet, rather than repro items with a clear one.
There are 120 different combinations for the internals of Cortina locks, so with a lot of patience you can find a set so that just one key fits all the locks and ignition.
Original A-frame kits are stamped with ‘Lotus’ on the frame, and are incredibly hard to find because they were mostly knackered (by 1964 in some cases).
Only in the first year or so of production were the Mk1 Cortina rear lamp bezels made by Ford, before their manufacture was outsources to a firm called Butlers. Very early lamps have a sharper point in the centre.

Sustainable front yard landscaping

Sustainable front yard landscaping

My no lawn , pie shaped front yard landscape that I share with my neighbour. Planted in May of 2009 and this photo taken in the fall of the same year. Notice the intentional lack of flowers, but still lots of color from different shrubs, various sedum and grasses. This planting requires very little in the way of maintenance. Note that the pergola gate is not yet complete.

  • The Art Lesson is a children's picture book by Tomie DePaola, a story of compromise. It's the story of a boy named Tommy, an enthusiastic painter and drawer. He makes pictures for his relatives and draws on the sidewalk, on bedsheets, and even on walls.

color wheel art lesson - The Art

The Art Lesson (Paperstar Book)

The Art Lesson (Paperstar Book)

Having learned to be creative in drawing pictures at home, young Tommy is dismayed when he goes to school and finds the art lesson there much more regimented.

This is a charming exercise in autobiography (one of several) by the great author-illustrator Tomie dePaola. "Tommy" is consumed with a passion for drawing. Although encouraged by his family, who treat his pictures with respect and decorate their houses and workplaces with them, he encounters misunderstanding and frustration at school. Finally, an art teacher gives him a chance to do his own thing. The Art Lesson is filled with many full-page illustrations in dePaola's inimitably warm, soothing style. It's also packed with the right lessons on individuality and perseverance, especially for children who are already showing a single-minded interest or special talents that put them ahead of their peers. Movement in Squares, by Bridget Riley 1961.Not to be confused with pop art or plop art.
Op art, also known as optical art, is a style[1] of visual art that makes use of optical illusions.

"Optical art is a method of painting concerning the interaction between illusion and picture plane, between understanding and seeing."[2] Op art works are abstract, with many of the better known pieces made in only black and white. When the viewer looks at them, the impression is given of movement, hidden images, flashing and vibration, patterns, or alternatively, of swelling or warping.

[edit] Historical context

Jesus Soto, CaracasOp art is derived from the constructivist practices of the Bauhaus. This German school, founded by Walter Gropius, stressed the relationship of form and function within a framework of analysis and rationality. Students were taught to focus on the overall design, or entire composition, in order to present unified works. When the Bauhaus was forced to close in 1933, many of its instructors fled to the United States where the movement took root in Chicago and eventually at the Black Mountain College in Asheville, North Carolina, where Anni and Josef Albers would come to teach.[citation needed]

[edit] Origin of "op"
The term first appeared in print in Time magazine in October 1964,[3] though works which might now be described as "op art" had been produced for several years previously. For instance, Victor Vasarely's painting, Zebras (1938), is made up entirely of curvilinear black and white stripes that are not contained by contour lines. Consequently, the stripes appear to both meld into and burst forth from the surrounding background of the composition. Also the early black and white Dazzle panels of John McHale installed at the This Is Tomorrow exhibit in 1956 and his Pandora series at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in 1962 demonstrate proto-op tendencies.

An optical illusion by Hungarian-born artist Victor Vasarely[edit] The Responsive Eye
In 1965, an exhibition called The Responsive Eye, created by William C. Seitz was held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.[4] The works shown were wide ranging, encompassing the minimalism of Frank Stella and Ellsworth Kelly, the smooth plasticity of Alexander Liberman, the collaborative efforts of the Anonima group, alongside the well-known Victor Vasarely, Richard Anuszkiewicz, and Bridget Riley. The exhibition focused on the perceptual aspects of art, which result both from the illusion of movement and the interaction of color relationships. The exhibition was enormously popular with the general public, though less so with the critics.[5]Critics dismissed op art as portraying nothing more than trompe l'oeil, or tricks that fool the eye. Regardless, op art's popularity with the public increased, and op art images were used in a number of commercial contexts. Bridget Riley tried to sue an American company, without success, for using one of her paintings as the basis of a fabric design.[citation needed]

[edit] How op art works
[edit] Black & white and the figure-ground relationship
Op art is a perceptual experience related to how vision functions. It is a dynamic visual art, stemming from a discordant figure-ground relationship that causes the two planes to be in a tense and contradictory juxtaposition. Op art is created in two primary ways. The first, and best known method, is the creation of effects through the use of pattern and line. Often these paintings are black and white, or otherwise grisaille. Such as in Bridget Riley's famous painting, Current (1964), on the cover of The Responsive Eye catalogue, black and white wavy lines are placed close to one another on the canvas surface, creating such a volatile figure-ground relationship that one's eyes begin to hurt. Getulio Alviani chose alumnium surfaces, treated in order to create patterns of light which change as the watcher moves (vibrating texture surfaces). Another reaction that occurs is that the lines create after- images of certain colors due to how the retina receives and processes light. As Goethe demonstrates in his treatise Theory of Colours, at the edge where light and dark meet, color arises because lightness and darkness are the two central properties in the creation of color.[citation needed]

Strangers who Listened only in the Language of Educated Assimilation
Delivered from Distant Authority whose Purpose was undoubtedly Questionable
And Certainly,
Self Serving.

Two Trails would learn to know Him as ‘Grandfather of the Four Directions’
Though not in words because his name was not a word,
It was a sound, the sound of God in Harmony with Himself.
Friend of Bees loved Him for He had unto him Delivered Life in Breath to the
Rhythm of the Laughing Song
And he knew His Whispering Warnings of Peril.
He delivered the Cooling Shadow of the lonely Thunder Being
in the Season of the Thirsty Sage,
He would Summon the Thunder Beings
and they would Danced in Excited and Mischievous Folly
And their Passion would Ignite Lethal Streamers of
Blinding Bolts of Sporadic and Colorful Power
to share With Friend of Bees, their Glory.
Yes!
And at the arrival of Friend of Bees at life’s Opening Gate,
He delivered
curious Scents from the far Horizon,
Sands of a distant Plain,
Ice from another Continent,
Songs from another Land,
And his First Breath of Life,
Which Friend of Bees shared with
Spirit of Coyote,
El Hijo del Llano Estacado.
(Son of the Staked Plains)
Then,

he Gasped twice and returned the Sacred Gift
Upon a Cry Whose Intensity Awakened the Sleeping Thunder Beings
Who Grumbled until Grandfather of the Four Directions apprised
Them of the Blessed event and Joined them as they all Clapped,
Thunderously.
Then,
Danced and Swirled in Celebration
until Ornry old ‘Twister Most Ferocious’,
(What? With all the Excitement and all)
accidentally touched down
Laying Waist to every farmhouse, Barn and mailbox in a swath a mile wide and twenty five miles long,
Then,
as the Last Straw,
Almost wiped out the old Barracks that Housed the entire Family Of, and,
the newborn, Friend of Bees himself.
Well!
That’s when Grandfather of the Four Directions got Really Pissed,
Stepped in
And sent the Thunder Beings back to Sleep it off,
While He returned to Greet the morning Star of the East
And to visit the morning Rainbow in the West
And to cool in the North
And to Warm in the South, And,
to deliver the sound of Breath upon the first word of life of

I pulled out of Chinati Hot Springs as the morning sun tried fruitlessly to absorb the desert’s December chill that the steady northwest wind refused to release,
rested I was.
Put my rolling tee pee on the rack at Presidio and tightened the pan gasket bolts and
bought an extra u-joint to carry along,
think I hear a tiny Click in that area,
(Better $18.76 in the safe than hundreds in the Sorry).

Crossed the border into Ojinaga and spent a couple of hours trying to get a 6 month visa.
When I said ‘Soy escritor’
(I’m a writer),
WRONG!!!!!
interrogation began, finally,
I showed them my book, “el Gringo Mojado’,
all changed and I was treated warmly and made to feel welcome. Got My six month visa.

Arrived at Hidalgo del Parral,
a city I really like and sort of know,
after dark and
found my way to the city’s center where I rented a $12.50 room at a familiar downtown hotel and
walked the busy streets looking in at the local stores,
had an awesome $4.oo supper and
took in some norten-o music in the bars,
and played with some local Corrido Crooners,
a three piece, Bajo Sesto, Accordian and Bass,
Took a four hour nap,
got up and headed south.

As for driving the length of Mexico,
the trip was uneventful, but
compared to driving in the states,
surviving such a trek in Mexico is an event in its self,
but I suppose that’s a story,
or a book really, to be told later.

The Art of Innovation: Lessons in Creativity from IDEO, America's Leading Design Firm

IDEO, the widely admired, award-winning design and development firm that brought the world the Apple mouse, Polaroid's I-Zone instant camera, the Palm V, and hundreds of other cutting-edge products and services, reveals its secrets for fostering a culture and process of continuous innovation.

There isn't a business in America that doesn't want to be more creative in its thinking, products, and processes. At many companies, being first with a concept and first to market are critical just to survive. In The Art of Innovation, Tom Kelley, general manager of the Silicon Valley based design firm IDEO, takes readers behind the scenes of this wildly imaginative and energized company to reveal the strategies and secrets it uses to turn out hit after hit.

IDEO doesn't buy into the myth of the lone genius working away in isolation, waiting for great ideas to strike. Kelley believes everyone can be creative, and the goal at his firm is to tap into that wellspring of creativity in order to make innovation a way of life. How does it do that? IDEO fosters an atmosphere conducive to freely expressing ideas, breaking the rules, and freeing people to design their own work environments. IDEO's focus on teamwork generates countless breakthroughs, fueled by the constant give-and-take among people ready to share ideas and reap the benefits of the group process. IDEO has created an intense, quick-turnaround, brainstorm-and-build process dubbed "the Deep Dive."

In entertaining anecdotes, Kelley illustrates some of his firm's own successes (and joyful failures), as well as pioneering efforts at other leading companies. The book reveals how teams research and immerse themselves in every possible aspect of a new product or service, examining it from the perspective of clients, consumers, and other critical audiences.

Kelley takes the reader through the IDEO problem-solving method:

> Carefully observing the behavior or "anthropology" of the people who will be using a product or service

> Brainstorming with high-energy sessions focused on tangible results

> Quickly prototyping ideas and designs at every step of the way

> Cross-pollinating to find solutions from other fields

> Taking risks, and failing your way to success

> Building a "Greenhouse" for innovation

IDEO has won more awards in the last ten years than any other firm of its kind, and a full half-hour Nightline presentation of its creative process received one of the show's highest ratings. The Art of Innovation will provide business leaders with the insights and tools they need to make their companies the leading-edge, top-rated stars of their industries.

IDEO, the world's leading design firm, is the brain trust that's behind some of the more brilliant innovations of the past 20 years--from the Apple mouse, the Polaroid i-Zone instant camera, and the Palm V to the "fat" toothbrush for kids and a self-sealing water bottle for dirt bikers. Not surprisingly, companies all over the world have long wondered what they could learn from IDEO, to come up with better ideas for their own products, services, and operations. In this terrific book from IDEO general manager Tom Kelley (brother of founder David Kelley), IDEO finally delivers--but thankfully not in the step-by-step, flow-chart-filled "process speak" of most how-you-can-do-what-we-do business books. Sure, there are some good bulleted lists to be found here--such as the secrets of successful brainstorming, the qualities of "hot teams," and, toward the end, 10 key ingredients for "How to Create Great Products and Services," including "One Click Is Better Than Two" (the simpler, the better) and "Goof Proof" (no bugs).
But The Art of Innovation really teaches indirectly (not to mention enlightens and entertains) by telling great stories--mainly, of how the best ideas for creating or improving products or processes come not from laboriously organized focus groups, but from keen observations of how regular people work and play on a daily basis. On nearly every page, we learn the backstories of some now-well-established consumer goods, from recent inventions like the Palm Pilot and the in-car beverage holder to things we nearly take for granted--like Ivory soap (created when a P&G worker went to lunch without turning off his soap mixer, and returned to discover his batch overwhipped into 99.44 percent buoyancy) and Kleenex, which transcended its original purpose as a cosmetics remover when people started using the soft paper to wipe and blow their noses. Best of all, Kelley opens wide the doors to IDEO's vibrant, sometimes wacky office environment, and takes us on a vivid tour of how staffers tackle a design challenge: they start not with their ideas of what a new product should offer, but with the existing gaps of need, convenience, and pleasure with which people live on a daily basis, and that IDEO should fill. (Hence, a one-piece children's fishing rod that spares fathers the embarrassment of not knowing how to teach their kids to fish, or Crest toothpaste tubes that don't "gunk up" at the mouth.)
Granted, some of their ideas--like the crucial process of "prototyping," or incorporating dummy drafts of the actual product into the planning, to work out bugs as you go--lend themselves more easily to the making of actual things than to the more common organizational challenge of streamlining services or operations. But, if this big book of bright ideas doesn't get you thinking of how to build a better mousetrap for everything from your whole business process to your personal filing system, you probably deserve to be stuck with the mousetrap you already have. --Timothy Murphy

Jumanji [VHS]

Jumanji [VHS]

After the success of Jurassic Park in 1993, the floodgates opened for digital special effects, and Jumanji is nothing if not a showcase for computer-generated creepiness guaranteed to give young children a nightmare or two. Whether that was the filmmakers' intention is up for debate, since this is a PG-rated adventure revolving around a mysterious board game that unleashes a terrifying jungle world upon its players, including gigantic spiders, huge mosquitoes, a stampede of rhinos, elephants, and every other jungle beast you can imagine. Robin Williams plays a man-child who's been trapped in the world of "Jumanji" for 26 years until he's freed by two kids who've discovered the game and released its parade of dangerous horrors. A chaotic and misguided attempt at family entertainment, the movie does offer a few good laughs, and the effects are frequently impressive, if not entirely convincing to the eye. --Jeff Shannon

Okay Airboy, haven’t you noticed the odd fact that Birdie (that was the name of his plane) was shaking a lot for some reason? or at least should have been, or was moving about not something Bonnie was known for?

Hey, Robin, I’m going to take a wild guess and say the war’s not going that well for you.

At least Batman seems upset that Batwoman is tied to the spinney thing this time. And check out the Spinner, dressed like the long lost mutant brother of the Michelin Man AND sporting a propeller on his head! They don’t make Bat Villains like that anymore… thank goodness!

Mr. Fortune, can I call you Amos? Amos, you’ve got them tied to a humongous roulette wheel, how much %&#*#@ luck could they have had to start with in the first place?

Since getting my Robin spinning wheel, I haven't been using this Majacraft Suzie wheel and am thinking about selling it.

I have had this Suzie for about 12 years. The wheel has been well cared for and well used. Suzie sometimes squeals a bit but is still a versatile, easy to use wheel.

I don't want to deal with shipping the wheel so to find a more local buyer I might post on Craig's list (which I have never used before) or Ravelry. I would appreciate any feedback/recommendations!

Dumbo [VHS]

This is a GREAT movie ; will LOVE

A Disney "classic" that actually is a classic, Dumbo should be part of your video collection whether or not you have children. The storytelling was never as lean as in Dumbo, the songs rarely as haunting (or just plain weird), the characters rarely so well defined. The film pits the "cold, cruel, heartless" world that can't accept abnormality against a plucky, and mute, hero. Jumbo Jr. (Dumbo is a mean-spirited nickname) is ostracized from the circus pack shortly after his delivery by the stork because of his big ears. His mother sticks up for him and is shackled. He's jeered by children (an insightful scene has one boy poking fun at Dumbo's ears, even though the youngster's ears are also ungainly), used by the circus folk, and demoted to appearing with the clowns. Only the decent Timothy Q. Mouse looks out for the little guy. Concerns about the un-PC "Jim Crow" crows, who mock Dumbo with the wonderful "When I See an Elephant Fly," should be moderated by remembering that the crows are the only social group in the film who act kindly to the little outcast. If you don't mist up during the "Baby Mine" scene, you may be legally pronounced dead. --Keith Simanton

This peaceful community loved by thousands of locals was once, in part, a Mexican land grant called New Helvetia, given to John Sutter. With the 1852 arrival of homesteader (and area namesake) William Curtis, who managed a 200-acre farm started by his brother, and those drawn by the California gold rush, the area began to develop and expand. In 1887, papers were filed for the Highland Park subdivision a nod to early flood concerns. Since that time, more than 30 other subdivisions have sprung up between Broadway and Sutterville, along with the Sierra School, which has been nominated for city landmark status. Situated south of today s Broadway, the area that was once a flood plain and then an agricultural area now holds over 2,500 homes and is among the city s most vibrant neighborhoods. Houses here represent various architectural styles, from Victorian to Arts and Crafts and the various 1920s revivals. The neighborhood has an equally interesting mix of residents.

Powerful Drilling, Driving, and Fastening
With enough power to rival professional automotive wrenches, the WR18DL has an industrial-grade two-piece motor that features heavy-gauge copper coils for maximum power and long-lasting performance. And you know the WR18DL will pack a punch: it delivers an impact rate of up to 3,200 BPM, a no-load variable speed of 0-2,600 RPM, and a class-leading 1,950 in./lbs. of torque. For ultimate control, a unique two-step speed switch allows you to select between two power settings: Power Mode (0-2,600 RPM) and Save Mode (0-2,000 RPM).
With all that power, you have to keep things cool. Thankfully, Hitachi's unique cool flow technology sends a steady stream of air to the motor, which enables the impact to run harder and longer than most impact drivers without risking burnout.
Full of User-Friendly Features
Like all Hitachi tools, the WR18DL is full of features that were designed with the user in mind. To start, a non-slip Elastomer grip keeps you in complete control of the tool and provides comfort for all-day jobs. What's more, the driver weighs only 3.5 pounds, so it is extremely easy to maneuver and transport. A patented five-position belt hook with integrated LED offers easy portability, as well as illumination in dimly lit areas.
For further convenience, the WR18DL features a 1/2-inch square drive chuck for flexibility. Additionally, the driver is fitted with externally accessible carbon brushes and replaceable armature for easy maintenance and longer overall life.
HXP Batteries Last Three Times Longer and Weigh 50% Less
The WR18DL owes its light weight to two HXP Lithium-Ion batteries (included). These 3.0-Ah batteries weigh half of what traditional NiCd or NiMH batteries weigh. In fact, tools featuring HXP batteries are on average one pound lighter than tools using traditional batteries.
Additionally, HXP batteries last three times longer than their competition. Where NiCd and NiMH batteries could be used for up to 500 charge cycles, HXP Lithium-Ion batteries can be used for up to 1,500 charge cycles! An added bonus, the included quick charger replenishes the battery power in just 40 minutes, so you have less down time.
HXP Lithium-Ion batteries operate within optimal voltage limits, protecting both the tool and batteries from damage. Protection circuitry built into the batteries and charger monitors the charge and discharge for each battery cell, resulting in peak operating performance.
And if a surge in power is detected during use, Hitachi's Over-Current Protection technology will temporarily shut of the power to protect the batteries and tool from being damaged. This feature allows the power to return to optimal voltage, thereby extending battery and tool life beyond any competitive lithium-ion products.
HXP batteries come with a two-year HXP Lithium-Ion Battery Warranty, which protects against possible defects in materials and workmanship.
The Industry's Longest Lithium-Ion Tool Warranty
Every Hitachi cordless power tool is designed to the highest standards and is rigorously tested for both performance and durability. All HXP Lithium-Ion cordless tools come with a Lifetime Lithium-Ion Tool Warranty, which protects against possible defects in materials and workmanship.

Summer Swift

Summer Swift

Having been mostly riding a rigid Gryphon or the Pegasus with a carbon fork over the winter the recent spell of warm weather here inspired me to get something together with a suspension fork. Both for local blasts and maybe in some of the marathon/24hr races if I don't feel up to the beating of a rigid bike on what I hope will be baked hard summer soils.

I've had the 120mm maxled reba for a while and used it briefly, decided I loved it, then decided I didn't want to kill it through the UK winter mud. So that went on, along with some wheels I built specifically for use with that fork - 32h DT 240s hubs, 20mm front, 10mm RWS on the rear. Sapim Race spokes, Duster rims. A smattering of silver bits and some white touches in places and we're good to go.

simplicity wheel weights - The Laws

The Laws of Simplicity (Simplicity: Design, Technology, Business, Life)

The Laws of Simplicity (Simplicity: Design, Technology, Business, Life)

Finally, we are learning that simplicity equals sanity. We're rebelling against technology that's too complicated, DVD players with too many menus, and software accompanied by 75-megabyte "read me" manuals. The iPod's clean gadgetry has made simplicity hip. But sometimes we find ourselves caught up in the simplicity paradox: we want something that's simple and easy to use, but also does all the complex things we might ever want it to do. In The Laws of Simplicity, John Maeda offers ten laws for balancing simplicity and complexity in business, technology, and design--guidelines for needing less and actually getting more.Maeda--a professor in MIT's Media Lab and a world-renowned graphic designer--explores the question of how we can redefine the notion of "improved" so that it doesn't always mean something more, something added on.Maeda's first law of simplicity is "Reduce." It's not necessarily beneficial to add technology features just because we can. And the features that we do have must be organized (Law 2) in a sensible hierarchy so users aren't distracted by features and functions they don't need. But simplicity is not less just for the sake of less. Skip ahead to Law 9: "Failure: Accept the fact that some things can never be made simple." Maeda's concise guide to simplicity in the digital age shows us how this idea can be a cornerstone of organizations and their products--how it can drive both business and technology. We can learn to simplify without sacrificing comfort and meaning, and we can achieve the balance described in Law 10. This law, which Maeda calls "The One," tells us: "Simplicity is about subtracting the obvious, and adding the meaningful."

??????. Morocco / Marruecos. Western Sahara / Sahara Occidental

ENG “Each of us lives two lives: our real life and our secret life. In our real life, we are what we appear to be. We love our husband or our wife. We care for our children. Each morning we pick up a bag or a briefcase and we do what we must to oil the wheels of our existence. We sell bonds, we clean hotel rooms, we serve beer to the kind of men with whom we would not share our air if we had a choice in the matter. We eat our lunch in a diner, or on a bench in a park where people walk their dogs and children play in the sunlight. We feel a sentimental urge to smile at the animals because of the joy they take in the simplicity of a stroll through green grass, or at the children paddling in pools and racing through sprinklers, but still we return to our desks or our mops or our bars feeling less happy than we formerly were, unable to shake off the creeping sense that we are missing something, that there is supposed to be more than this to our lives.
Our real life –anchored by those twin weights (and here they come again), our careworn friends duty and responsibility, their edges considerately curved, the better to fit upon our shoulders- permits us our small pleasures, for which we are inordinately grateful. Come, take a walk in the countryside, the earth spongy and warm beneath your feet, but be aware always of the ticking clock, summoning you back to the cares of the city.” – The Black Angel, John Connolly

ESP “Cada uno de nosotros vive dos vidas: nuestra vida verdadera y nuestra vida secreta. En nuestra vida real, somos lo que aparentamos ser. Amamos a nuestro marido o a nuestra mujer.

Fiat X1/9

Fiat X1/9

The X1/9 started life in 1969 as a show concept car called the Autobianchi A112 Runabout, with styling by Bertone under chief designer Marcello Gandini. It was designed around the all-new 128 SOHC engine and gearbox from the front wheel drive Fiat 128 but used these parts in a radical way, moving the entire transverse drive train and suspension assembly from the front of the 128 to the rear of the passenger cabin, directly in front of the rear axle with the manifolds on the rear face, giving a mid-engined layout. The fuel tank and spare wheel were mounted side by side ahead of the engine directly behind the seats, thus maximising the proportion of the car's weight falling within the wheelbase. This package also left useable stowage areas both front and rear.

The car was built by Fiat in right hand drive form between 1976 and 1982 when Bertone took over production until 1989. The X1/9 was considered to have excellent handling, and was amongst the first cars to meet the abandoned late 60s U.S. safety regulations.

The prototype car featured a distinctive wedge shape and took many styling cues from contemporary power-boat design. Many aesthetic features of the Autobianchi Runabout are readily identifiable on the X1/9. The long flat bonnet (hood) with central indentation, the large front overhang, the wedge shape with prominent C pillar roll-over hoop and the car-length indented plimsoll-line all made the successful transition to the X1/9, giving it a highly distinctive appearance.

Once developed for production, the two-seater featured pop-up headlights and a removable hard top roof panel (targa top). The removable hardtop is a model of simplicity to remove and replace. The hardtop stores in the front luggage compartment, snug below the front hood, only slightly reducing the space available for front stowage. There was an aftermarket top by Saratoga available, which was made of lightweight clear-smoked polycarbonate, which today is a coveted accessory.

The X1/9 name stands out amongst the contemporary Fiat automobile names for not conforming to the standard (at the time) numerical designations. Fiats of the time were named using a basic numerical system (127, 128, 124, 131 etc) denoting their relative position in the current model line-up, with the X1/9 being the lone exception to this rule.
The name stems from the codenames employed by Fiat for their new development projects during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The 'X' projects were subcategorised as X0 for engines, X1 for passenger vehicles and X2 for commercial vehicles. Though originally envisioned as the '128 Spider', the X1/9 retained its prototype code through to production.

This is about as treacly as pop can get, yet something about it endears and endures. Forget the Neil Youngish banality of "Horse with No Name." The best America songs feature a delicate yet intricate interplay of acoustic guitars that creates a tableau for sweeter-than-sweet vocalese. Just try not to sing along to "Ventura Highway" or "Sister Golden Hair." Try not to be suckered into sentimental reminiscence when listening to "I Need You" or the superb "Daisy Jane." And if your heart hardens when listening to the low-key lope of the "Muskrat Love," you must be cold-blooded. --Tod Nelson

America: The Story of Us

From executive producer Jane Root of Planet Earth, comes the breathtaking journey through history--unlike any other in the past 40 years--with live-action recreations of key historical events through the use of cutting edge CGI animation, giving viewers an immersive view of history in the making.

Stills from America: The Story of Us (Click for larger image)

With 12 chapters spread out over three discs and a total running time of more than nine hours (not including bonus material), the History Channel's America: The Story of Us is a sprawling primer on the history of the country and its people. Starting about 100 years after Columbus with the arrival of the earliest white settlers from across the Atlantic and finishing in the present day, the series can boast episodes devoted to major conflicts like the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and World War II; the more gradual but still significant developments that helped shape the nation (like western expansion and the mass migration to major cities); and the various elements and forces (the discovery of oil; the growth of industry, engineering, and infrastructure; the development of the automobile and other means of mass transportation, and, of course, the accumulation of vast economic and military might) that combined to make the United States the world's dominant superpower in the 20th century and beyond. To the filmmakers' credit, the darker aspects of this history--slavery and racial strife, the treatment of Native Americans, the internment of Japanese Americans during WWII--are not given short shrift. And while much of the material is dealt with in fairly broad strokes, there are also various enlightening details in each chapter. Who knew that George Washington established a network of spies who wrote notes in invisible ink in order to deceive the British, or that the most valuable currency for those who first explored the West was beaver pelts?
A combination of reenactments, photos, CGI, models, and other elements delivers a great deal of information here, along with frequent references to Americans' pioneer spirit, devotion to hard work, and belief that if you can dream it, you can do it. Yet this isn't an especially scholarly document. The events depicted, from the Boston Tea Party and Paul Revere's midnight ride to the Alamo and the Gettysburg Address, not to mention more lurid tales like the Donner Party and the St. Valentine's Day Massacre, should be familiar to those with even a cursory knowledge of US history. The emphasis on star power, be it the comments from a parade of talking heads including actors, musicians, politicians (President Barack Obama among them), athletes, soldiers, and so on, or the focus on charismatic historical figures like John Brown, Daniel Boone, and many others, reflects our celebrity-obsessed culture. And the constant hyperbole (narrator Liev Schreiber intones some variation of "What's about to happen will change things forever!" at least half a dozen times in the first episode alone) becomes tedious. Then again, considering the number of Americans who can't find their own country on a map, presenting the material like a dramatic TV show instead of textbook was a shrewd idea. --Sam Graham

wheel bearing failure causes - Geomechanics of

Geomechanics of Failures

Geomechanics of Failures

The main goal of this introductory course is to demonstrate how basic concepts in soil mechanics can be used as a "forensic" tool in the investigation of geotechnical failures. This, in turn, provides a good opportunity to show how to use available procedures in the formulation of useful simple geotechnical models. Geotechnical failure is understood here in a broad sense as the failure of a structure to function properly due to a geotechnical reason. Some of the geotechnical failures selected are well known for their impact on the geotechnical community. Others are closer to the authors' experience. They have been organized into three main topics: Settlement, Bearing Capacity and Excavations. They cover a significant proportion of every day activities of professional geotechnical engineers. No attempt has been made to create a comprehensive handbook of failures. Instead, the emphasis has been given to creative applications of simple mechanical concepts and well known principles and solutions of Soil Mechanics. The book shows how much can be learned from relatively simple approaches. Despite this emphasis on simplicity, the book provides a deep insight into the cases analyzed. A non-negligible number of new analytical closed-form solutions have also been found. Their derivation can be followed in detail. In all the cases described an effort was made to provide a detailed and step by step description of the hypothesis introduced and of the analysis performed. Each of the eight chapters of the book addresses a certain type of failure, illustrated by a case history. The chapters are self-contained. They provide a review of soil mechanics principles and methods required to understand and explain the failure described. In some cases the analysis offered provides a non-conventional application of basic principles. All chapters are completed with a summary of lessons learned from the failure and its analysis. They also include a short account on advanced topics to help the interested readers to go beyond the approaches used in the book. Readers are expected to be familiar with the basic concepts of soil mechanics and foundation engineering. The target audience is graduate students, faculty and practicing professionals in the fields of civil and geotechnical engineering. This textbook profits from experience accumulated in teaching a course in forensic engineering at the ETH Zurich.

Brunel Tunnel

Brunel Tunnel

The Thames Tunnel is an underwater tunnel, built beneath the River Thames in London, United Kingdom, connecting Rotherhithe and Wapping. It measures 35 feet (11 m) wide by 20 feet (6 m) high and is 1,300 feet (396 m) long, running at a depth of 75 feet (23 m) below the river's surface (measured at high tide). It was the first tunnel known successfully to have been constructed underneath a navigable river, and was built between 1825 and 1843 using Thomas Cochrane[citation needed] and Marc Isambard Brunel's newly invented tunnelling shield technology, by him and his son Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
The tunnel was originally designed for, but never used by, horse-drawn carriages and was most recently used by trains of the London Underground's East London Line. The East London Line closed on 23 December 2007 to allow extension of the line and conversion of the route to become part of the London Overground network in time for 2010.

At the start of the 19th century, there was a pressing need for a new land connection between the north and south banks of the Thames to link the expanding docks on both sides of the river. The engineer Ralph Dodd tried, but failed to build a tunnel between Gravesend and Tilbury in 1799.
In 1805–1809 a group of Cornish miners, including Richard Trevithick, attempted to dig a tunnel further upriver between Rotherhithe and Wapping but failed because of the difficult conditions of the ground. The Cornish miners were used to hard rock and did not modify their methods for soft clay and quicksand. The "Thames Archway" project was abandoned after it caved in when 1,000 feet (305 m) of a total of 1,200 feet (366 m) had been dug.[3] However, even if it had been completed its usefulness would have been questionable; it only measured 2–3 feet by 5 feet (61–91 cm by 1.5 m), far too small for passenger use.
The failure of the Thames Archway project led engineers to conclude that "an underground tunnel is impracticable". However, the Anglo-French engineer Marc Brunel refused to accept this conclusion. In 1814 he proposed to Tsar Alexander I of Russia a plan to build a tunnel under the river Neva in St Petersburg. This scheme was turned down (a bridge was built instead) but Brunel continued to develop ideas for new methods of tunnelling.
Brunel and Thomas Cochrane patented the tunnelling shield, a revolutionary advance in tunnelling technology, in January 1818. In 1823 Brunel produced a plan for a tunnel between Rotherhithe and Wapping, which would be dug using his new shield. Financing was soon found from private investors including the Duke of Wellington and a Thames Tunnel Company was formed in 1824, with the project beginning in February 1825.
The first step taken was the construction of a large shaft on the south bank at Rotherhithe, 150 feet (46 m) back from the river bank. It was dug by assembling an iron ring 50 feet (15 m) in diameter above ground. A brick wall 40 feet (12 m) high and 3 feet (91 cm) thick was built on top of this, with a powerful steam engine surmounting it to drive the excavation's pumps. The whole apparatus was estimated to weigh 1,000 tons. The soil below the ring's sharp lower edge was removed manually by Brunel's workers. The whole shaft thus gradually sank under its own weight, slicing through the soft ground rather like an enormous pastry cutter. The shaft became stuck at one point during its sinking as the pressure of the earth around it held it firmly in position. Extra weight was required to make it continue its descent; a total of 50,000 bricks were added as temporary weights. It was realised this problem was caused because the shaft was cylindrical; years later when the Wapping shaft was built, it was slightly wider at the bottom than the top. This non-cylindrical tapering design ensured it did not get stuck. By November 1825 the Rotherhithe shaft was in place and tunnelling work could begin.
The tunnelling shield, built at Henry Maudslay's Lambeth works and assembled in the Rotherhithe shaft, was the key to Brunel's construction of the Thames Tunnel. The Illustrated London News described how it worked:

The mode in which this great excavation was accomplished was by means of a powerful apparatus termed a shield, consisting of twelve great frames, lying close to each other like as many volumes on the shelf of a book-case, and divided into three stages or stories, thus presenting 36 chambers of cells, each for one workman, and open to the rear, but closed in the front with moveable boards. The front was placed against the earth to be removed, and the workman, having removed one board, excavated the earth behind it to the depth directed, and placed the board against the new surface exposed. The board was then in advance of the cell, and was kept in its place by props; and having thus proceeded with all the boards, each cell was advanced by two screws, one at its head and the other at its foot, which, resting against the finished brickwork and turn

65 - 82 Corvette brake tips

65 - 82 Corvette brake tips

Corvette Brakes...some history and tips.

From the time of the first V-8 installation in the early 1950’s, Corvettes out-performed their drum brakes. Finned drums, cool air ducts, Metallic lining, and power assists only gave marginal improvements. It only took a few high-speed brake applications to induce fade, better known as “goodbye asphalt, hello tire wall!” Finally, Zora Duntov’s team gave the 1965 Sting Ray some real stopping power – disc brakes! This system demonstrated straight, predictable stops time after time and was self-adjusting. It does have a few weak points that can cause today’s Corvette owner considerable headaches and expense. However, most of these problems can be remedied once they are pinpointed.

Beyond the Corvette Disc Brake innovation, the chosen caliper design was quite complex. Each Corvette Brake Caliper employs 4 pistons; 2 inboard and 2 outboard that enlists Pascal's Law to insure that equal brake pad pressure is exerted on each face of the Corvette Brake Rotor. So what's this stuff leaking on the garage floor? By design the Corvette Brake System is handicapped by the simple fact that there are 32 or more potential locations for fluid leaks to develop.
In addition; the cast iron construction of the caliper and its 4 piston bores is prone to rust and corrosion build-up which causes pits or irregularities to form in the cylinder wall and a failure of one or more of the piston seals. This may be corrected by honing the cast iron piston bores and replacing the seals but eventually this scenario will recur. A more permanent cure is replacement with Stainless Steel Sleeved Calipers. Each of the piston bores is lined with a stainless steel sleeve that resists virtually all rust and corrosion issues. Aging and breakdown of the rubber piston seals will eventually cause leaks to develop even within the stainless bores but lifetime is increased exponentially. Seal replacement alone would correct this problem, never scuff or hone a stainless steel sleeved caliper bore. Caliper leaks also tend to be more common on cars that are inactive or stored for extended periods of time. Occasional pumping of the brake pedal in these cars can help the dormant seals to remain limber and prevent them from sticking to the piston bore.

The brake fluid itself can cause problems. Most owners change the motor oil on a regular basis, but never think about the brake fluid until they experience a problem. Corvettes that sit idle for long periods should have their brake fluid replaced every two years or so. This will avoid the damage caused by water condensing within the brake system resulting in corrosion and leaks. An alternative is to drain the system and replace the fluid with silicone brake fluid. Silicone brake fluid does not have an affinity for water and helps to preserve internal brake parts and seals.

Occasionally old, weak brake caliper hoses will balloon under pressure and cause a spongy response in the brake pedal. Some owners report that, despite repeated bleedings, the brake pedal soon “goes soft” due to air in the system. This is most often caused by worn or mis-adjusted wheel bearings, warped ("out-of-true") rotors, a bent spindle face, or any combination of these faults. Each of these faults result in brake rotor run out which causes an alternating pumping action of the inboard and outboard caliper pistons as the car is driven. This caliper piston pulsing causes air to enter the system without fluid loss. Here, the only solution is to correct the cause of the rotor runout. The maximum allowance for rotor runout for the 1963-82 Corvette is .008". Lathing or "turning" the rotors may help but does nothing to correct the other causes mentioned earlier. Never "turn" the Corvette Brake Rotors beyond the minimum thickness which is stamped on the perimeter.

Occasionally, one wheel will start dragging or pulling due to a caliper piston “hanging up”. This situation has two main causes and remedies. A worn piston and bore may allow the piston to wedge itself in the bore and not retract when brake pressure is released. A defective rubber brake line can balloon or collapse internally and maintain pressure even after the brake pedal is released. A quick diagnosis is to carefully open the bleeder valve on the stuck caliper. If the brake line has trapped pressure, there will be a rush of fluid and the caliper should be freed. If the piston is jammed mechanically, there will be little, if any, fluid and the caliper will remain jammed. The owner will now know where to start on repairs.

Another common complaint is that either the front or rear calipers function, but the owner cannot get fluid to the other calipers. Once the master cylinder is checked and determined to function properly, the proportioning valve is usually the culprit. This is the rectangular block found between the master cylinder and the lines to the calipers. It’s main function is maintaining

Practical Plant Failure Analysis: A Guide to Understanding Machinery Deterioration and Improving Equipment Reliability (Dekker Mechanical Engineering)

Component failures result from a combination of factors involving materials science, mechanics, thermodynamics, corrosion, and tribology. With the right guidance, you don’t have to be an authority in all of these areas to become skilled at diagnosing and preventing failures. Based on the author’s more than thirty years of experience, Practical Plant Failure Analysis: A Guide to Understanding Machinery Deterioration and Improving Equipment Reliability is a down-to-earth guide to improving machinery maintenance and reliability.
Illustrated with hundreds of diagrams and photographs, this book examines…
· When and how to conduct a physical failure analysis
· Basic material properties including heat treating mechanisms, work hardening, and the effects of temperature changes on material properties
· The differences in appearance between ductile overload, brittle overload, and fatigue failures
· High cycle fatigue and how to differentiate between high stress concentrations and high operating stresses
· Low cycle fatigue and unusual fatigue situations
· Lubrication and its influence on the three basic bearing designs
· Ball and roller bearings, gears, fasteners, V-belts, and synchronous belts
Taking a detailed and systematic approach, Practical Plant Failure Analysis thoroughly explains the four major failure mechanisms—wear, corrosion, overload, and fatigue—as well as how to identify them. The author clearly identifies how these mechanisms appear in various components and supplies convenient charts that demonstrate how to identify the specific causes of failure.
