Ethical Fashion Issues

ethical fashion issues

    ethical fashion
  • An approach to the design, sourcing and manufacture of clothing which is both socially and environmentally conscious. Sustainable fashion – using more environmentally-friendly materials and methods in clothing production – is part of this larger trend.

    issues
  • (issue) publish: prepare and issue for public distribution or sale; "publish a magazine or newspaper"

  • Supply or distribute (something)

  • Formally send out or make known

ethical fashion issues - To Die

To Die for: Is Fashion Wearing Out the World?. by Lucy Siegle

To Die for: Is Fashion Wearing Out the World?. by Lucy Siegle

An expose on the fashion industry written by the Observer's 'Ethical Living' columnist, examining the inhumane and environmentally devastating story behind the clothes we so casually buy and wear. Coming at a time when the global financial crisis and contracting of consumer spending is ushering in a new epoch for the fashion industry, To Die For offers a very plausible vision of how green could really be the new black. Taking particular issue with our current mania for both big-name labels and cheap fashion, To Die For sets an agenda for the urgent changes that can and need to be made by both the industry and the consumer. Far from outlining a future of drab, ethical clothing, Lucy Siegle believes that it is indeed possible to be an 'ethical fashionista', simply by being aware of how and where (and by whom) clothing is manufactured. The global banking crisis has put the consumer at a crossroads: when money is tight should we embrace cheap fast fashion to prop up an already engorged wardrobe, or should we reject this as the ultimate false economy and advocate a return to real fashion, bolstered by the principles of individualism and style pedigree? In this impassioned book, Siegle analyses the global epidemic of unsustainable fashion, taking stock of our economic health and moral accountabilities to expose the pitfalls of fast fashion. Refocusing the debate squarely back on the importance of basic consumer rights, Siegle reveals the truth behind cut price, bulk fashion and the importance of your purchasing decisions, advocating the case for a new sustainable design era where we are assured of value for money: ethically, morally and in real terms.

because we can

because we can

I have no other outlet for this essay, so if you're just here to see the photograph, then that's just dandy, but if you have the time to read my essay, any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Because We Can

There are few genuine human rights - rights which we should fight for, die for if necessary. These include the right to life and political participation, right to subsistence and rights to peace and clean environment. 1 There are rights which we can expect, which our local government has provided us. Then there are the “rights” Which many of us expect because society implies that that they are essential, often incorrectly, sometimes illegally and almost always inappropriately.

We live in a state of entitlement at the moment. I suspect this is something which may apply generally to the world, especially the western “civilised” world but, as it is the place I know best, I know it applies to England. There is a new motto on the lips of almost everybody in this fair country - “because we can”. People no longer choose to think about the moral, ethical or financial factors involved in their decisions. If I want to do something, I feel entitled to it, and therefore I will do it.

This attitude, this state of entitlement, has become particularly obvious in the last few days - the cry of “because we can” has been heard over the airwaves, seen on screen, written in text, tweeted, facebooked, and I’m sure, even google plussed, not just by the easily targetable social groups that some areas of the media and society have chosen to blame. Now we have entered the post-event analysis of causes, the common theme is commentators using the riots as evidence of their own specific issues; “the riots are clear confirmation of my long-held view that {insert pre-existing world view here}” 2 This is endemic in our country, and is ruining the nation and the state that we live in.

The much maligned annual educational statistics offer a prime example. “It is estimated that at least 1 in 4 of our economically active adults is functionally innumerate ... 22% of 16–19-year-olds are functionally innumerate” 3 "After 11 years of formal education, employers say they get kids coming to them who can't read, who can't write, who can't communicate, and don't have that work ethic."4 Is it the fault of the educators? Is it even the fault of the government? Or is this entitlement state also to blame? How many teachers out there have had students demanding that “they get them an A*”, as if the responsibility is that of the educator, not the educated? Work hard, and life will be your reward. If I had any belief that extending maths teaching from 5 to 16 to 5 to 18 would improve the aforementioned statistics, I would support this idea, but I know that just extending the course will do precisely nothing to extend the education. These children are being educated - there is no question that the education is there and is being provided. But if I teach the concept of differential equations to students who have spent their educated lives opting out with low attendance, submitting no homework, poor behaviour in class, they will not learn - they resist the teaching available. By the time they are 16, they would have had numerous maths teachers with many styles so no one teacher can be blamed. They will be just as unable to solve these equations as the child who has spent 2 terms learning how a compass point can be used to make patterns in a pencil tin lid. There is a huge portion of society out there that believes that leaving school before one has achieved any qualifications is justifiable, because the state will look after them - the benefits system will provide. Why shouldn’t we avoid all education? Because we can. Because it’s not my responsibility, and it’s my right to.

The situation is the same with smoking. Smoking is a legal right. Smoking is permissible in public in almost all countries. There are certain rules and regulations that have been introduced by various societies to try to curb the socially negative aspects of smoking, and taxes rise and rise on cigarettes to try to curb the purchase. Yet this is a habit which has not been suggested to have a link to various disease, but proven beyond almost all margins of statistical doubt to have both clinically and statistically significant links to disease, not even recently, but for over 60 years 5,6. It would be virtually impossible not to have been “educated” on the dangers of smoking, but it is easy to ignore this education, because we can. I condemn smoking, just as I am condemn the concept of “I smoke because I can, but I’m also going to demand free treatment because I can”. This tends to both follow and precede the need for lengthy, expensive and potentially preventable treatment for disease.

The same can also be said for alcohol. There are increasing numbers of the very young suffering illnesses related to long term alcohol a

Automaton - Experimental Research

Automaton - Experimental Research

This is a photograph, not yet widely circulated, of experimental research into creating a cyborg. Unfortunately I cannot reveal my sources, for reasons that should be obvious.

Here, the process is incomplete. The human skin has not yet covered the metallic, robotic parts. There is evidence to suggest that human organs are used and remain largely intact, however a metallic-like substance has been "grown" using similar methods to growing crystals.

One source states that the metallic substance contains human gene codes and, therefore can be "grown" organically. This is probably done using nanotechnological methods, in a similar fashion to"organic computing".

I apologise for the quality of the photograph, but the photograph was taken very quickly at a location that I cannot reveal.

The ethical issues surrounding this discovery are monumental. However I can assure all viewers that we witnessed no signs of life, whether physical or pertaining to consciousness.

Clean Clothes: A Global Movement to End Sweatshops

The Clean Clothes Campaign is a worldwide movement that aims to improve the wages and conditions of sweatshop workers. This is the story of their struggle. Large retailers such as Tesco, Walmart and Carrefour lure shoppers in with prices that seem too good to be true. This book shows that they're too good to be fair. All along the industry's supply chain, workers, often children, are exploited through poverty wages, unpaid overtime and harsh anti-union measures. The campaign urges those in charge of the garment industry's supply lines to protect their workers and treat them fairly. This dynamic account of direct engagement by concerned consumers is a must read for those that see globalization differently and want their shopping choices to support the most vulnerable people involved in the clothing industry.

The Pace Report: "Revive Da Live's Big Band Tribute to Guru" The Keith Elam Tribute Segment on Vimeo by Brian Pace

The Pace Report:

One of the most important groups in hip-hop was Gang Starr. Consisting of DJ Premier and MC Guru (Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal), the two men would make a dent in music. The guys would go on to make make an unprecedented six recordings spanning over two decades. Their raw street edge as well as lyrics that range from the awareness of gang violence, to the praise and respect of black culture and history, Guru and Primo didn’t sell their soles to the rap game and the record business.

To really understand the real legacy of Gang Starr, here’s a brief history of how the two connected. Guru was born Keith Edward Elam on July 17th, 1961 in Roxbury, Massachusetts. Elam’s parents, his father a prominent lawyer and now judge, and mother worked in the Boston public schools, stressed education to all of his siblings. Before beginning his rap career in earnest, Guru graduated from Morehouse College in Atlanta in 1983 and took graduate classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan.

Music was his passion as he decided to quit graduate school during the early 1980’s. As hip-hop was shaping up to become a music force which later would become mainstream, he’d rap under the name of MC Keithy E. It wasn’t until 1986 when he changed his name to Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal, a.k.a Guru. A year later he founded the group Gang Starr hooking up with DJ and producer Premier. The two ended up with a record deal on Wild Pitch Records and dropped their first album “No More Mr. Nice Guy” in 1989. Their debut single “Manifest” was an instant classic and was a hit on both radio and the new video music formats that developed during rap’s infancy.
It wasn’t until director Spike Lee used the group’s signature record “Jazz Thing” for his 1990 movie “Mo Better Blues” that put them on the map. Premier began really using a lot of jazz riffs for break beats introducing the Hip-Hop generation to the music a lot of MCs and rappers were using as samples. When the duo dropped their second release “No More Mr. Nice Guy” was the calm before the storm. Primo’s signature production and cutting over his beats added to the gritty rhyming style of Guru. By their third release “Daily Operation,” the group recorded a classic triggering off a slew of crate gems like “Take It Personal,” and “Code of the Streets.”

Guru took a bold leap when he produced and spearheaded what would become a landmark in Hip-Hop. His 1993 release of “Jazzmatazz” volume 1 would be one of the most important crossroads in both jazz and rap. Guru recorded a record of original music along with some sampled jazz loop, along with some of the living legends of the music. The disc featured Branford Marsalis, Ronny Jordan, Courtney Pine, Lonnie Liston Smith, Roy Ayers, and Dr. Donald Byrd. Fusing both a live jazz band with rap was both ingenious and a critical success. He would also go on to record three other “Jazzmatazz” projects featuring diverse artists like Kem, Bob James, Vivian Green, and Chaka Khan.

Both he and Primo would ride high on the success of their solo projects as well as other Gang Starr projects like “Moment of Truth” in 1998 and their last record “The Ownerz” in 2003. But friction between the two as well as the change in climate of rap music took a toll on them both creatively. Guru formed 7 Grand Records with producer and rapper Solar in 2005 and released the fourth volume of “Jazzmatazz.” and in the summer of 2007 released what would be his last record before his timely illness.

Guru died on April 19, 2010 at age 47 while battling cancer for over a year and a half. He suffered a heart attack that lead him into a coma.

The Revive Da Live Music Group paid tribute to Guru at Le Poisson Rouge as part as their 5th year anniversary. For the last five years Revive Da Live has produced innovative and fresh programming that continues forge both the legacy of hip-hop and jazz music. The Revivalist is a daily music and cultural blog that keeps abreast of the latest in the world of jazz, hip-hop, and happenings of the pull of urban America. These guys have been able to successfully take their shows all over the world featuring the likes of legendary musicians like Pete Rock, Roy Ayers, and Stefan Harris.

The Big Band Tribute was arranged and conducted by trumpeter Igmar Thomas and pianist/accompanist Marc Cary. These two divided the show into two parts: 1) featuring the music of Gang Starr. This included the music performed by the Revive De Live Big Band that showcased the music of both Guru and DJ Premier. 2) showcase and feature music from Guru’s solo “Jazzmatazz” recordings. The Hip-Hop community showed up in full featuring live performances from Peter Gunz, Lord Finesse, O.C., Jeru the Damaja, and Greg Nice of Nice and Smooth.

Guru’s musical legacy was timeless in that he invented music that will be around long after he’s gone. Raising the bar on producing great music while elevating black culture without the exploitative and negative stigma tha

Série de Nova Iorque: (Quiscalus quiscula) no Central Park, em Manhattan - New York series: Common Grackle at Central Park, Manhattan - IMG 20080726 8522

The Common Grackle, Quiscalus quiscula, is a large icterid.
The 32 cm long adult has a long dark bill, a pale yellowish eye and a long tail; its plumage is an iridescent black, or purple on the head. The adult female is slightly smaller and less glossy.
The breeding habitat is open and semi-open areas across North America east of the Rocky Mountains. The nest is a well-concealed cup in dense trees (particularly pine) or shrubs, usually near water; sometimes, the Common Grackle will nest in cavities or in man-made structures. It often nests in colonies, some being quite large.
This bird is a permanent resident in much of its range. Northern birds migrate in flocks to the southeastern United States.
The Common Grackle forages on the ground, in shallow water or in shrubs; it will steal food from other birds. It is omnivorous, eating insects, minnows, frogs, eggs, berries, seeds, grain and even small birds.
This bird's song is particularly harsh, especially when these birds, in a flock, are calling.
The range of this bird expanded west as forests were cleared. In some areas, it is now considered a pest by farmers because of their large numbers and fondness for grain.

Central Park
A text, in english, from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The Pond in Central Park with midtown's skyscrapers
Type: Urban park
Location: Manhattan, New York City
Coordinates: 40°46?55?N 73°57?58?W / 40.78194, -73.96611 (Central Park)
Size: 843 acres (341 ha)
1.32 sq mi (3.4 km?)
Opened 1859
Operated by Central Park Conservancy
Annual visitors: 25 million
Status: Open all year
(U.S. National Historic Landmark)
Built/Founded: 1857
Architect: Frederick Law Olmsted, Calvert Vaux
Designated as NHL: May 23, 1963
Added to NRHP: October 15, 1966
Central Park is a large public, urban park (843 acres, 3.41 km?, 1.32 mi?; a rectangle 2.6 statute miles by 0.5 statute mile, or 4.1 km ? 830 m) in the borough of Manhattan in New York City. With about twenty-five million visitors annually, Central Park is the most visited city park in the United States,[2] and its appearance in many movies and television shows has made it famous.
The park is maintained by the Central Park Conservancy, a private, not-for-profit organization that manages the park under a contract with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, in which the president of the Conservancy is ex officio Administrator of Central Park.
Central Park is bordered on the north by West 110th Street, on the south by West 59th Street, on the west by Eighth Avenue. Along the park's borders however, these are known as Central Park North, Central Park South, and Central Park West respectively. Fifth Avenue retains its name along the eastern border of the park. Most of the areas immediately adjacent to the park are known for impressive buildings and valuable real estate.
The park was designed by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted and architect Calvert Vaux, who went on to collaborate on Brooklyn's Prospect Park. Central Park has been a National Historic Landmark since 1963.
While much of the park looks natural, it is in fact almost entirely landscaped. It contains several natural-looking lakes and ponds,[7] extensive walking tracks, two ice-skating rinks, the Central Park Zoo, the Central Park Conservatory Garden, a wildlife sanctuary, a large area of natural woods, a 106-acre (0.43 km?) billion gallon reservoir with an encircling running track, and an outdoor amphitheater called the Delacorte Theater which hosts the "Shakespeare in the Park" summer festivals. Indoor attractions include Belvedere Castle with its nature center, the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre, and the historic Carousel. In addition there are numerous major and minor grassy areas, some of which are used for informal or team sports, some are set aside as quiet areas, and there are a number of enclosed playgrounds for children.
The park has its own wildlife and also serves as an oasis for migrating birds, especially in the fall and the spring, making it a significant attraction for bird watchers. Of particular interest to New Yorkers has been the resident hawk population, especially Pale Male, a Red-tailed Hawk who has been mentioned in a Steve Earle song and on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. When Olmstead designed the park, he does not seem to have made provision for predators, perhaps because his view of nature was not based on an ecological understanding. Pale Male and several other hawks simply appeared, overca'me opposition from other birds and humans, and filled a long-vacant ecological niche..
The 6 miles (10 km) of drives within the park are used by joggers, bicyclists and inline skaters, especially on weekends, and in the evenings after 7:00 p.m., when automobile traffic is banned.
Manhattan (coterminous with New York County) is one of the five boroughs of New York City. With a 2007 population of 1,620,867[1] living in a land area of 22.96 square miles (59.47 km?), it is the most densely populat

Now, for the first time, 95 original and beautifully staged photographs of Kahlo's newly restored clothing are paired with historic photos of the artist wearing them and her paintings in which the garments appear. bags, ink pens and status anxiety [a short discourse]

bags, ink pens and status anxiety [a short discourse]

.

luis vuitton, mont blanc and status anxiety [a short discourse].

.

when we talk about such things as louis vuitton luggage and mont blanc pens we are talking primarily [and almost entirely] about status symbols.

in a utilitarian sense, [and arguably an aesthetic sense] a louis vuitton bag or mont blanc pen is no more useful or beautiful than a similar product costing 10 or 20 times less.

given this fact, what is the purpose of such products as louis vuitton luggage and mont blanc ink pens?

the real purpose behind products such as these is not necessarily to please the owner, their social utility resides in what they communicate to everybody else who looks at these products and thence whoever owns them.

and if the viewer is aware of the language, the message that the status symbol 'should' send to the culturally initiated, then they may read the story.

.

stories through product.

every single thing we own, every single thing we wear, every single thing in our homes tells a story about us.

owned objects tell stories about those who own them.

though some objects have developed into 'personal advertisements' which behave in a very particular way.

many [usually expensive] objects are bought primarily not as useful or even beautiful things, they are bought simply as objects to be seen by other people.

to be clear again, these objects are called status symbols.

with respect to a piece of louis vuitton luggage, or a mont blanc pen, there are no good utilitarian, qualitative or aesthetic reasons whatsoever for buying these products.

they are not even necessarily 'the best' of that particular product a consumer can possibly buy.

there are products that serve exactly the same purpose, and work equally as well as those products which are status symbols, but cost considerably less.

but these products do not function successfully as status symbols.

this is because they do not communicate those things which the buyer of a status symbol wants their purchased status symbol to communicate.

a mont blanc pen or louis vuitton bag exists primarily as a signal; it exists as a recognisable physical manifestation and personal advertisement of the perceived status of the consumer that owns it.

again, the status symbol product very often functions no better in any utile sense than their non-status-symbol equivalents, but costs ten, twenty or thirty times more.

odd.

.

a strange thing regarding status symbols.

of course, the strange thing about status symbols is that the people looking at them need to know exactly what the object is worth to receive the signal the owner wishes to send.

they need to know exactly what the status symbol is meant to mean.

what that status symbol is meant to say.

if a person owns an ?800 mont blanc pen, and the person looking at the pen is entirely unaware of the brand or the ludicrously high price, then the pen simply becomes the same as every other pen.

when the viewer is unaware of what the status symbol 'should' be saying, the status symbol ceases entirely to be effective in terms of communicating the correct social and status signal to the viewer.

it is reduced to the status of base product, and as such communicates nothing other than the fact it is yet another product. yet another purchased object amongst countless other purchased objects.

this is why advertising and fashion media outlets make sure as many people as is possible know the correct signal any given status symbol should communicate.

.

product - the lingua franca of the socially anxious.

in effect what we have are groups of peers signalling to each other their social status using purchased products.

in order to understand french people i need to be able to speak french.

in order to understand what a person's status symbols are saying about that person, i need to understand the language of their status symbols.

so it is not any notion of quality or craftsmanship that makes a status symbol expensive, it is its power to tell those who understand the status symbol something [often entirely false] about the owner.

alain de botton proposes the theory of status anxiety in his exceptional book of the same name.

i think the behaviour patterns that come about as a result of status anxiety have existed for a very long time indeed.

that said, i think we now live in an age where status anxiety and conspicuous consumption can be said to be amongst the primary driving forces of almost every human being in any given developed nation.

as i mentioned, much more often than not, the function of a status symbol has little or nothing to do with its utilitarian, or indeed, aesthetic value.

it exists to tell other people exactly how much you spent in buying it.

this seems pitiful to me.

are the vast majority of people so personally and socially insecure that they need to commit themselves to purchase ever m

Vanishing Act

Vanishing Act

"I felt a pang -- a strange and inexplicable pang that I had never felt before.
It was homesickness.
Now, even more than I had earlier when I'd first glimpsed it, I longed to be transported into that quiet little landscape, to walk up the path, to take a key from my pocket and open the cottage door, to sit down by the fireplace, to wrap my arms around myself, and to stay there forever and ever."
Alan Bradley (The Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag)

"She knew with suddeness and ease that this moment would be with her always, within hand's reach of memory. She doubted if they all sensed it - they had seen the world - but even George was silent for a minute as they looked, and the scene, the smell, even the sound of the band playing a faintly recognisable movie theme, was locked forever in her, and she was at peace."
Stephen King (Carrie)

"She could sense it very clearly: for me, no less than for her, the past counted far more than the present, remembering something far more than possessing it. Compared to memory, every possession can only ever seem disappointing, banal, inadequate ... She understood me so well! My anxiety that the present 'immediately' turned into the past so that I could love it and dream about it at leisure was just like hers, was identical. It was 'our' vice, this: to go forwards with our heads forever turned back."
Giorgio Bassani

"Philosophy is really nostalgia, the desire to be at home."
Novalis

The Band Stand programme lists the band as The New York Jazz Band. If this is the band, this is Bruce Boardman but I'm not sure. If you can confirm this or otherwise please do! Great music on a very British public holiday weekend Sunday - not that warm and showery. Had a nice walk.

Fashions in Literature (Webster's Korean Thesaurus Edition)

Fashions in Literature (Webster's Korean Thesaurus Edition)

This edition is written in English. However, there is a running Korean thesaurus at the bottom of each page for the more difficult English words highlighted in the text. There are many editions of Fashions in Literature. This edition would be useful if you would like to enrich your Korean-English vocabulary, whether for self-improvement or for preparation in advanced of college examinations. Webster's edition of this classic is organized to expose the reader to a maximum number of difficult and potentially ambiguous English words. Rare or idiosyncratic words and expressions are given lower priority compared to "difficult, yet commonly used" English words. Rather than supply a single translation, many words are translated for a variety of meanings in Korean, allowing readers to better grasp the ambiguity of English without using the notes as a pure translation crutch. Having the reader decipher a word's meaning within context serves to improve vocabulary retention and understanding. Each page covers words not already highlighted on previous pages. This edition is helpful to Korean-speaking students enrolled in an English Language Program (ELP), an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) program, an English as a Second Language Program (ESL), or in a TOEFL® or TOEIC® preparation program. Students who are actively building their vocabularies in Korean or English may also find this useful for Advanced Placement® (AP®) tests. TOEFL®, TOEIC®, AP® and Advanced Placement® are trademarks of the Educational Testing Service which has neither reviewed nor endorsed this book. This book is one of a series of Webster's paperbacks that allows the reader to obtain more value from the experience of reading. Translations are from Webster's Online Dictionary, derived from a meta-analysis of public sources, cited on the site.

Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist + BD Live [Blu-ray]

Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist + BD Live [Blu-ray]

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist is a comedy about two people thrust together for one hilarious, sleepless night of adventure in a world of mix tapes, late-night living, and, live, loud music. Nick (Michael Cera) frequents New York's indie rock scene nursing a broken heart and a vague ability to play the bass. Norah (Kat Dennings) is questioning pretty much all of her assumptions about the world. Though they have nothing in common except for their taste in music, their chance encounter leads to an all-night quest to find a legendary band's secret show and ends up becoming the first date in a romance that could change both their lives.

In the big-screen version of Rachel Cohn and David Levithan's popular young adult novel, two high-school seniors fall in love over the course of one eventful evening. A straight bass player in a queercore band, Nick (Juno's Michael Cera) has just been dumped by the two-timing Tris (Alexis Dziena). He's committed to making more self-pitying mix CDs until his bandmates convince him to help track down a top-secret rock concert. Meanwhile, Norah (Charlie Bartlett's Kat Dennings) and her hard-partying pal, Caroline (Ari Graynor), set off on the same journey. Nora had never met Nick, but she already had a crush on him (While attending the same school as Tris, she's been enjoying the mixes Nick keeps making--and Tris keeps throwing away). When the inebriated Caroline goes missing, they spend the rest of the night racing around the Lower East Side in his Yugo looking for the friend, the show, and trying to avoid Tris (Norah's ex-boyfriend, Tal (Tropic Thunder's Jay Baruchel), presents further complications). Peter Sollett's follow-up to Raising Victor Vargas aims to please several audiences at once. It starts out like a less dirty-minded Superbad, morphs into a post-millennial After Hours, and ends as a Big Apple take on Before Sunset. It's sweet and funny, but could use more of its own identity, though Cera and Dennings make for an appealing couple and the supporting performers, especially Graynor and Kevin Corrigan in a wordless cameo, enhance the proceedings considerably. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Beau laughs as he recalls trying to emulate L. C. 's groove at that early stage , although by this time , he was already gaining a reputation for his uncanny ability to learn note for note renditions of just about anything that presented a challenge.

Beau Shelby (St. Louis' most authentic Modern Blues/R&B/Funk Artist) credits that authenticity to having been born in the Mississippi Delta and raised by family elders who had never lived anywhere else but The Delta.
He began playing guitar in 1973 at age 11 and excelled in virtually every category of playing by the time he reached 17.

Timeline and Events
·1973 – Began playing Guitar at age 11.
Beau was a highly motivated , mostly self-taught student and spent these early years mastering the basics as well as manual effects and tension devices.
·After joining several new and fledgling groups he marshaled that valuable experience and set out to establish his own band - Jabon - in September , 1977.
Just two short months later Jabon entered and won first place in St. Louis’ most prestigious talent contest - The Battle of the Bands - on Nov. 17 , 1977.
The winning band was also offered an opening act date at Kiel Opera House.
·1978 – Jabon picks up radio producer/jock Gary Starr of KATZ-AM
as a sponsor.
This led to Beau meeting and greeting some of the biggest R & B acts of that time via Backstage Guest Pass and becoming virtual pals
with the likes of : The Bar-Kays , Rufus & Chaka Khan , The Commodores, The Brothers Johnson , and many others.
·1979 – Landed a gig with manager T. J. Morris’ “Rocking Uniques”
where he was designated Bandleader and became friends with Greg Osby, noted Jazz Saxophonist (recently touring with Herbie Hancock and others) Kevin Batchelor , Trumpeter with internationally acclaimed Reggae group The SkaTa Lites ; and Theo

Kevin, Theo & Beau are later recruited by Otha & Co. ( St. Louis’ hottest R & B dance band ) and tour extensively playing the military circuit.
·1980 – 1990 Beau turns to realizing his dream of being an accomplished Studio Musician & Producer by working extensively as a Freelance musician in order to strengthen his versatility.

Playing with Chess records legend Bobby McClure landed him onstage as the opening act of the 2nd annual Budweiser Superfest
held at The St. Louis International Raceway.

Rome: A Cultural, Visual, and Personal History

Rome: A Cultural, Visual, and Personal History

From Robert Hughes, one of the greatest art and cultural critics of our time, comes a sprawling, comprehensive, and deeply personal history of Rome—as city, as empire, and, crucially, as an origin of Western art and civilization, two subjects about which Hughes has spent his life writing and thinking.

Starting on a personal note, Hughes takes us to the Rome he first encountered as a hungry twenty-one-year-old fresh from Australia in 1959. From that exhilarating portrait, he takes us back more than two thousand years to the city's foundation, one mired in mythologies and superstitions that would inform Rome's development for centuries.

From the beginning, Rome was a hotbed of power, overweening ambition, desire, political genius, and corruption. Hughes details the turbulent years that saw the formation of empire and the establishment of the sociopolitical system, along the way providing colorful portraits of all the major figures, both political (Julius Caesar, Marcus Aurelius, Nero, Caligula) and cultural (Cicero, Martial, Virgil), to name just a few. For almost a thousand years, Rome would remain the most politically important, richest, and largest city in the Western world.

From the formation of empire, Hughes moves on to the rise of early Christianity, his own antipathy toward religion providing rich and lively context for the brutality of the early Church, and eventually the Crusades. The brutality had the desired effect—the Church consolidated and outlasted the power of empire, and Rome would be the capital of the Papal States until its annexation into the newly united kingdom of Italy in 1870.

As one would expect, Hughes lavishes plenty of critical attention on the Renaissance, providing a full survey of the architecture, painting, and sculpture that blossomed in Rome over the course of the fourteenth through the sixteenth centuries, and shedding new light on old masters in the process. Having established itself as the artistic and spiritual center of the world, Rome in the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries saw artists (and, eventually, wealthy tourists) from all over Europe converging on the bustling city, even while it was caught up in the nationalistic turmoils of the Italian independence struggle and war against France.

Hughes keeps the momentum going right into the twentieth century, when Rome witnessed the rise and fall of Italian Fascism and Mussolini, and took on yet another identity in the postwar years as the fashionable city of "La Dolce Vita." This is the Rome Hughes himself first encountered, and it's one he contends, perhaps controversially, has been lost in the half century since, as the cult of mass tourism has slowly ruined the dazzling city he loved so much. Equal parts idolizing, blasphemous, outraged, and awestruck, Rome is a portrait of the Eternal City as only Robert Hughes could paint it.

Italians take immense pride in their appearance. Many opting for classic, well-made clothes, rather than experimental, disposable fashion. Italy is not the place to find new street trends, rather to embrace a consistent elegance through all walks of life. There is no off-duty; for Italians, dressing casually is no excuse for shabby, slovenly attire.
