These are the gifts that were in the huge box I posted yesterday. My friend wanted a vintage-looking frame and a botanical print but didn't specify quantity...
so I went ahead and got me three frames, painted them in dark brown with gold trim and framed the botanical prints I found on etsy. They turned out very nice and I got "beyond expectations" from her when I gave these to her. Yay!

I used to have several of these dolls from the time when I worked at Big Boy (1995), including one in the back window of my car wearing a "gold rope" necklace (a cheap bracelet out of a vending machine). My dad bought me this one as a gift about a year ago, from ebay...the ones sold individually at the restaurant during my era didn't come wrapped like this, they were just lined up under the display counter and on top of the salad bar. Also, the banks from my era had him holding a giant rubber hamburger aloft. Stands about 8.5" high and is made of a soft, rubbery material.

Mintage: 20 Proofs

When viewing mintage figures, most numismatists e that a coin is “rare” because only 10,000 or so were produced. But this figure seems almost laughable in comparison to the mintages for Proof gold coins struck prior to 1900. In fact, many of these issues have mintages that were lower than 100 coins.

With an original production figure of only 20 Proofs, the 1878 is tied with three other issues (1874, 1875 and 1877) as the lowest mintage Proof date of this denomination from 1859 onwards. The rarity of this was known by numismatists as early as the 1910’s/1920’s.

Unfortunately, the population reports for Proof 1878 quarter eagles include a number of resubmissions and this has further obfuscated the true rarity of this issue. PCGS has graded three: one example each in PR64, PR64 Deep Cameo and PR65 Deep Cameo. NGC shows ten submissions but I can all but guarantee you this number is severely inflated. These include one each in PR63, PR64 and PR65 plus four (!) in PR64 Ultra Cameo and three in PR65 Ultra Cameo.

My best estimate is that there are seven or eight examples known. This includes at least two that are impounded (ANS and Smithsonian). Breen wrote that “at least three” are impaired but I have never seen or heard of one of these.

1856-C $5.00 NGC AU58

Mintage: 28,457

Over the years I’ve stated again and again that AU58 coins are favorites of mine. When a coin is a real AU58, it tends to have better eye appeal than coins graded MS60, MS61 and sometimes even MS62. This 1856-C half eagle is a perfect example of why I dig sliders. The surfaces are very clean with no marks of note on the obverse; a small mint-made planchet flake on the reverse is hidden in the horizontal lines of the shield and can easily be missed with the naked eye. This is one of the half dozen rarest half eagles from this mint and it is one of the two hardest dates from this decade to find along with the 1854-C.

Historic Van Hoosen Farm

This is the historic Van Hoosen Farm located in the historic district of Stoney Creek in Rochester. Lemuel Taylor and his family became stoney creek's first settlers in 1823. The next year, a sawmill and gristmill, distillery and blacksmith shop were built. Next came a hotel and woolen mill (pictures later!). Joshua Van Hoosen and his family settled here in 1836. In 1853 after trying his luck in the gold fields in California, he returned. He purchased the family farm and married Sarah Taylor, granddaughter of Lemuel Taylor. Their granddaughter, Sarah Van Hoosen ran the estate as a model dairy farm from 1923 until 1952, when she deeded 300 acres to the University of Michigan. It had many additions throughout the years and was as stated, a model farm in the area of early farming and farming techniques. As the Avon/Rochester area grew, many of the local farms began to disappear. The Rochester Historical Society made sure this one would survive as it is a tribute and historical piece of early American farming.

Bygone Days?

We visited a steam fair recently and there was a shire horse ploughing competition running. The photo was a nice one but I thought I'd see what it looked like aged. I've been reading about old photographic techniques and wondered if I could reproduce something similar digitally.

The wet-plate collodion was used between 1850 and 1880 so the subject matter was appropriate. Collodion was a viscous liquid used to coat glass plates with light-sensitive salts. The glass became a negative from which contact-prints could be made. The gold chloride used to tone the albumen-coated photographic paper gave the prints a slightly purple/brown colour.

Many resin cuffs are broad. I wanted to make narrow cuffs that could be worn as a set, so I could play around with colors and mix and match the cuffs. My first set comes in a lovely apple green, a deep emerald and a red and gold number – all the colors that you would find in an apple orchard.

The cuff is 6 5/8 inches long with a 1 inch gap and would comfortably fit a wrist up to 6.5 inches round.

I love combining textures and colors and have made this style of bracelet three times. Two were Christmas prezzies: My goddaughter's was made using Sterling Silver double rolo chain with black Spinel briolettes, faceted Moonstone coins and bright white pearls. Her bestie received one that looked very similar to this bracelet, but with London Blue Topaz briolettes combined with the same Citrines and champagne pearls in the picture.

My favorite color is green, so I found these gorgeous stones and kept this all to myself!

Skagway Centennial Statue, 1897

"Skagway was originally spelled S-K-A-G-U-A, a Tlingit Indian word for "windy place." The first people in the area were Tlingits from the Chilkoot and Chilkat villages in the Haines-Kuckwan area. From a fish camp in nearby Dyea, they used the Chilkoot Trail for trading with the First Nations people of the Yukon
Territory. The windy Skagway valley was favored for hunting mountain goat and bear, but no one settled here until 1887. That June, Skookum Jim, a Tlingit from the Carcross-Tagish area, encountered members of the William Ogilvie expedition, a Canadian survey party that came north to map the country. Captain William Moore, a member of the party, was persuaded by Skookum Jim to follow him up a lower pass through the mountains, while the others took the Chilkoot route. Leaving the beach, the two journeyed up the Skagway valley to Lake Bennett, meeting the other party seven days later. The two men were excited and extolled the advantages of this new route through the mountains. Ogilvie at once named it for Sir Thomas White, a Canadian government minister. Moore had visions of a port city served by a railroad, and he returned to this valley with his son Bernard in October, 1887.

They built a cabin and a wharf, and waited. A small number of prospectors had been entering the north country searching for gold since the 1870s. It was only a matter of time until a great stampede would bring many more. In August 1896, Tlingits Skookum Jim and Dawson Charlie, along with George Carmack of California discovered a large amount of gold in Rabbit Creek, a tributary of the Klondike River, some 600 miles from here. The creek was renamed Bonanza, and when word of this strike reached the outside world, in July 1897; the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897-1898 was on!

For centuries, the Tlingits controlled these passes. The tide of stampeders forced them to give up control, but native packers still guided would-be prospectors over these mountains, and they were paid handsomely for their work. This sculpture represents a typical scene at the start of the Chilkoot or White Pass trails in August 1897. The Tlingit packer, in his 40s, has centuries of knowledge about the route from his ancestors. He wears traditional clothing, made of moose-hide and bear fur, and carries a pack made from the skin of a mountain goat, held to his back by a tumpline strapped around his chest. He leads a 30-year-old stampeder, just off a ship from Puget Sound, who is determined to reach the gold fields. His pack is a wood-frame box, and outside are strapped his hunting knife, shovel, and gold pan, which he hopes will gather riches before winter. With eyes wide open, and an eager smile, the stampeder has no apprehension about the rigors of the trail ahead."

Today we went to the NC Museum of History in Raleigh. It was for extra credit for my history class. It was small, but I loved it nonetheless. It was wonderful!
