British WW1 Silver Wound Badge
Result of shopping trip today.
The Silver War Badge was issued in the United Kingdom to service personnel who had been honourably discharged due to wounds or sickness during World War I. The badge, sometimes known as the Discharge Badge, Wound Badge or Services Rendered Badge, was first issued in September 1916, along with an official certificate of entitlement.
The sterling silver lapel badge was intended to be worn in civilian clothes. It had been the practice of some women to present white feathers to apparently able-bodied young men who were not wearing the King's uniform. The badge was to be worn on the right breast while in civilian dress, it was forbidden to wear on a military uniform.
The badge bears the royal cipher of GRI (for Georgius Rex Imperator; George, King and Emperor) and around the rim "For King and Empire; Services Rendered". Each badge was uniquely numbered on the reverse.
Cufflinks: Pound Sterling Librae
Before my trip to England I hadn't planned on any major shopping. I was just going to browse and see what caught my eyes.
Well, a pair of sterling silver cufflinks from the Bank of England Museum shop did just that. The Pound symbol is quite fitting for me as it's derived from the Latin word Librae (the scales, the balance), and I'm a Libran myself. Plus, suprisingly, the price of the silver cufflinks is quite reasonable.

Colloidal Silver Sinus Infections
- A pure mineral element from the earth, utilised for its incredible anti-bacterial & purifying properties. Used primarily in deodorants & some skincare, it helps to reduce & kill the bacteria that surrounds the sweat glands & causes odour or skin blemishes.
- a suspension of submicroscopic metallic silver particles in a colloidal base. Long-term use of silver preparations can lead to argyria, a condition in which silver salts deposit in the skin, eyes, and internal organs, and the skin turns ashen-gray.
- The medical uses of silver include its incorporation into wound dressings to treat external infections, and its use as an antiseptic and disinfectant in medical appliances. There is however insufficient evidence to support its use in wound healing.
- Sinusitis is inflammation of the paranasal sinuses, which may be due to infection, allergy or autoimmune issues. Most cases are due to a viral infection and resolve over the course of 10 days. It is a common condition with more than 24 million cases occurring in the United States annually.

Swine Flu Symptoms
Swine Flu Basics
By Vincent Iannelli, M.D.,
Updated August 02, 2009
Although the name 'swine flu' brings up a lot of extra fear and worry, it is important to note that swine flu is just an influenza A H1N1 virus.
That means that it is just another type of flu virus, just like that causes our typical seasonal flu symptoms. The big difference is that the current swine influenza A (H1N1) virus has components of pig and bird influenza viruses in it, so that humans don't have any immunity to it. That is what made it more likely that it would become a pandemic virus (have the ability to cause a global outbreak) because it could easily spread from person-to-person.
So far, even as you see swine flu cases increase on this swine flu map, experts don't know if this swine influenza A (H1N1) virus will return in the fall for another wave. It could or we just continue to see sporadic cases for a few weeks or months until it stops.
We do know that swine flu symptoms are just like seasonal flu symptoms.
Swine Flu Symptoms
According to the CDC, like seasonal flu, symptoms of swine flu infections can include:
* fever, which is usually high, but unlike seasonal flu, is sometimes absent
* cough
* runny nose or stuffy nose
* sore throat
* body aches
* headache
* chills
* fatigue or tiredness, which can be extreme
* diarrhea and vomiting, sometimes, but more commonly seen than with seasonal flu
Signs of a more serious swine flu infection might include pneumonia and respiratory failure.
If your child has symptoms of swine flu, you should avoid other people and call your pediatrician who might do a rapid flu test to see if he has an influenza A infection. Further testing can then be done to see if it is a swine flu infection. (Samples can be sent to local and state health departments and the CDC for confirmation of swine flu, especially if a child is in the hospital.)
Swine Flu High Risk Groups
With regular seasonal flu, infants and the elderly are usually thought to be most at risk for serious infections, in addition to people with chronic medical problems. Swine flu high risk groups, people who are thought to be at risk for serious, life-threatening infections, are a little different and can include:
* pregnant women
* people with chronic medical problems, such as chronic lung disease, like asthma, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and immunosuppression
* children and adults with obesity
Serious Swine Flu Symptoms
More serious symptoms that would indicate that a child with swine flu would need urgent medical attention include:
* Fast breathing or trouble breathing
* Bluish or gray skin color
* Not drinking enough fluids
* Severe or persistent vomiting
* Not waking up or not interacting
* Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
* Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
Swine Flu Symptoms vs. a Cold or Sinus Infection
It is important to keep in mind most children with a runny nose or cough will not have swine flu and will not have to see their pediatrician for swine flu testing.
This time of year, many other childhood conditions are common, including:
* spring allergies - runny nose, congestion, and cough
* common cold - runny nose, cough, and low grade fever
* sinus infections - lingering runny nose, cough, and fever
* strep throat - sore throat, fever, and a positive strep test
What You Need To Know
* Swine flu likely spreads by direct contact with respiratory secretions of someone that is sick with swine flu, like if they were coughing and sneezing close to you.
* People with swine flu are likely contagious for one day before and up to seven days after they began to get sick with swine flu symptoms.
* Droplets from a cough or sneeze can also contaminate surfaces, such as a doorknob, drinking glass, or kitchen counter, although these germs likely don't survive for more than a few hours.
* Anti-flu medications, including Tamiflu (oseltamivir)
A Little Time Alone
I started feeling lousy over the weekend, but thought it was just my allergies. By Monday morning, I was absolutely miserable and had a low grade fever. With four kids though, life must go on! :) I finally broke down on Wednesday and saw the doctor. I have a pretty bad sinus infection and an ear infection in my right ear. Seriously, I don't want to sound like a baby but I feel awful! I was up most of the night last night and I'm exhausted today. I am on Zithromax now and it usually starts working quickly.
About the picture...if I lie on the sofa, Kinsley wants to snuggle with me, which I usually love. If I crawl into bed, she wants to climb in with me and watch TV, which I also love. The bathroom is different though. She knows that the bathroom warrants privacy. After the girls got home from school, I told them I was going to take a hot shower. I took my blanket and my hot tea, and I climbed into the bathtub. Not to take a bath...but just to sit in silence and drink my tea! :) I sat in there for about 30 minutes before I finally climbed out to take a shower. It was nice.
Luckily, my camera and the tripod were in the master closet. I took exactly two photos and decided that one of them would have to work.
The Sudafed and Tylenol are wearing off so I'm going to go snuggle with Kinsley on the sofa. I can't lock myself in the bathroom until the other kids get home to watch her! :)

GOLD PLATED SILVER EAGLE : GOLD PLATED
Gold plated silver eagle : The silver boulders band : 2011 american silver eagle proof.
Gold Plated Silver Eagle
- The American Silver Eagle is the official silver bullion coin of the United States. It was first released by the United States Mint on November 24, 1986. It is struck only in the one-troy ounce size which has a nominal face value of one dollar and is guaranteed to contain one troy ounce of 99.
- (Silver Eagles) modern 1-oz silver bullion coins.

- Covered with a thin layer of gold
- Likely to prove profitable; secure
- Gold plating is a method of depositing a thin layer of gold onto the surface of another metal, most often copper or silver (to make silver-gilt), by chemical or electrochemical means.
- (Gold plating (software engineering)) Gold plating in software engineering (or time management in general) refers to continuing to work on a project or task well past the point where the extra effort is worth the value it adds (if any).
- Having a thin layer of gold applied to the surface, often by an electrolytic method; incorporating costly or otherwise excessive features or refinements unnecessarily; to be over-engineered; to be embellished to excess, especially so as to be stifling, or rigid and inflexible
Primada Cathedral, Toledo Spain
Since 1088 the main church of Toledo has been recognised as the primate cathedral over all others within the kingdom. It was therefore necessary for it to have a worthy see, once the direct danger of Muslim invasions had receded after the Christian victory at Navas de Tolosa in 1212. It occupies a place that appears always to have been sacred, it being on the site of the relocated main mosque, the Visigoth cathedral replacing it, possibly built on top of an earlier one.
The construction of the current building began in 1226, the archbishop being Jimenez de Rada and during the reign of Fernando III “the Saint”. The names of the earliest architects are known: Martin, responsible for the French gothic style plans and his successor, Petrus Petri. The temple base is a Latin cross, called a hall, because of being included in the rectangular plan. The elevation marks the cross, creating a vertical triangular shape since the central nave and the transept are much wider and higher than the side naves, the exterior naves being the lowest.
It is very interesting to climb one of the towers in Toledo where you can get an aerial view of the roofs of the cathedral forming a perfect cross surrounded by aerial flying buttresses marked by slender pinnacles. Only this way, or from the vantage points in the valley can the majestic nature and complexity of this outstanding building be appreciated, hidden away in a hollow in the middle of the city.
The oldest door of the temple is that of the North transept, inspired by the corresponding door of Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, given the high influence that the French gothic style has on these entrances. The mullion with Virgin and Child introduces the theme of scenes from the life of Christ, sculpted on its tympanum. It is a type of catechism in stone for believers in the XIII Century. It should be read in order, starting from the lower left end, from the Assumption to the Final Judgement and the Death of the Virgin on the upper part.
Its present stone dome is from the beginning of the XVII Century, covering the Corpus Christi chapel, built on the orders of cardinal Cisneros on the recovery of the Mozarabic Rite, replaced by Catholic rites, coinciding with the Christian conquest of Toledo, 1085.
The tower, ninety metres high, was completed with a final octagonal body, finished with the slate alcuzon and three crowns designed by the master Hanequin of Brussels in the XV Century.
The main facade has three entrance doors, that of the “Pardon” or “Kings” in the centre, that of the “Palms” or “Hell” next to the tower and that of the “Scribes” or “Judgement” by the Mozarabic Chapel. There are another two, these being the aforementioned door at the North transept, called “the Fair”, “the Sandal Maker”, the “Lost Child” or the “Clock”, this installed on the orders of cardinal Lorenzana, at the end of the XVIII Century to mark canonical hours, hence it has only one hand. And, finally the Door of the Lions at the South transept, combining gothic and baroque sculptures, all of the highest quality.
Up to this point, orthodox gothic design is followed. However, Toledo Cathedral has more entrances, two that lead to the cloister, that of “the Presentation” and that of “Santa Catalina” and the last, unique because of its location in the South wall, the neo-classical “Flat Door”, the only one that does not have steps. This modest "service entrance" that gave access to stonemasons and sculptures for the temple for centuries, became a noble porch for the passing of the famous Monstrance, when the Corpus Christi procession makes its majestic departure. It is currently the entrance door for visitors. The cloister can be entered through the Mollete Door and there are another five auxiliary doors in the walls of the structures added to the temple.
The wide range of sculptures in every part have doctrinal and didactic roles, as well as artistic ones. The exterior choir shows many scenes from the Old Testament and the Large Dome from the New Testament.
The collection of paintings is also important, above all the excellent collection kept in the Sacristy that contains Christ Stripped of his Garments and the Apostolate by Greco, paintings by Caravaggio, Titian, Van Dyck, Goya, Morales, Rubens, Bassano and many more. Juan de Borgona and Lucas Giordano should also be mentioned separately, since their most outstanding paintings are the frescoes that decorate the walls of the Chapter House and the ceiling of the Sacristy respectively.
Another type of art that is very noticeable is the gold and silver work. The cathedral’s treasure is exhibited in the chapel below the tower, including the imposing Monstrance by Enrique de Arfe, composed of numerous pieces fitted together in a gothic filigree style of gold-plated silver. This is the precious case for the real Monstrance of the Sacred Way, being made of solid gold, belonging to the Catholic Monarchs. Once a year it is paraded through
Old Siberian Gate in the city of Perm
Proof, if any were needed, that the Tsars were just as much into large monuments as the Soviets. The monument itself, is, course, long gone, though a helpful soul has marked where it once stood on Google Earth; on Sibirskaya street, naturally.
There's no doubt that it's old. The stone plinths on which the obelisks stand are stained and chipped, and the obelisks themselves – which appear to be clad in sheet metal of some kind – are also corroded and tattered. What looks like gold between the silver plates is actually rust. On top of the obelisks are imperial double-headed eagles, each one crowned with a circle enclosing the letter "A" in it, denoting that they were erected in the reign of one of the two Alexanders, most likely Alexander II (1856 to 1881). On the front of each obelisk is a square area which is unreadable, though they look to me like icons of some kind.
But why were they erected at all? In totalitarian states, monuments are built sometimes as a way of focussing people, that is, if you give people some grand and imposing physical monument, it gives them something they know they are supposed to line up behind and praise. In that sense, it gets everybody pointing more or less in the same direction; and what they don't talk about, at least in public, is what divides and upsets them. Whether they privately believe in the ideological myth propagated by the monument is of lesser importance than the fact that it is there, and that it is a focus for a public obedience.
The Soviets, of course, carried this to an excess undreamed of by Alexander II, with their giant statues and vast public buildings, as did the Nazis with their complex of buildings at Nuremburg, and Hitler's proposed rebuilding of Berlin; and of course, both these societies fostered leader cults of which the monuments were to some extent an expression.
SPG's title and framing suggest perhaps a dream deferred, a vision of a Siberia still unrealized more than a generation after this monument was built. One never knows in SPG's shots whether the irony is intended, or is merely a contingent product of the facts of life in Tsarist Russia. An ordinary dusty street has grown up around the fading monument, a garden or park on one side, and a bar or store of some kind on the other. A group of men on the corner register mainly as moving coloured shadows, except for two, who are lounging around, propping up the wall. SPG has angled his camera low, to give the monument what drama he can, but it's clearly a failing attempt; the hopeful future of Siberian development still hasn't happened, and the monument to it is crumbling.
This shot was relatively easy to register, but quite faded. Levels were adjusted separately for sky and the rest of the shot, and then the Auto Colour command was used selectively (monuments; telephone poles; fence; trees; and buildings) to try and get rid of various colour casts, in particular an overall magenta cast that affected everything. You can still see that the centre of the shot has too much red and purple, but it's not really possible to remove it, without radically altering the overall balance of colours.

Audio log #3
Damn, things had not been going well today.
We started out with a well prepared, albeit small group of soldiers, scouting out some land in Louisiana. Things had been going great, until another catastrophe occurred. Like all those years ago, the 'Rags had been laying in wait, ready for us. But this time, I was ready too. I took out Urag after Urag, but it wasn't enough. Eventually, I was the only man standing against a horde of Urags. They were closing in on my position, keeping behind cover, and leapfrogging positions to stay hidden. They were getting far too close. Then, something massive loomed in my scope. It was an Urag Chieftain, followed by a pair of Skirmishers! I fired wildly, once, and then my magazine clicked empty. Damn, I shouldn't have been careless, and reloaded! The Chieftain brought his massive Chain-ax to bear, and brought it down on me. At the last second, I managed to bring my rifle up to block. The staff nearly sheared through it, but it managed to save my life. I was knocked down by the impact, now weaponless except for my own chainblade. The chieftain raised his staff to finish me off. "So this is how it ends," I thought. In one last act of denial, I spat at his chest as the ax began it's descent. I shut my eyes, now thinking, "ohdamnohdamnohdamnohdamnohdamn!" I felt a wave of force, a burning pain on the side of my face, and everything went black.
A few seconds later, I wearily opened my eyes. I wasn't dead! Instead, I saw the chieftain, staring blankly, with a gaping hole blown in his chest. And a few feet behind him, I saw Cryptid. He barked to the other men in his team, who must have been behind the nearby wall, to clean up the rest of the 'Rags. He helped me to my feet, and I thanked him profusely. Cryptid must have blown a hole in the Chieftain at the last moment with his MGL. however, I was not without my scars. The Chain-axe had done a number on the left side of my face, leaving a long gash. Fortunately, it wasn't fatal, but would likely be there for the rest of my life. Then Cryptid spoke again, "Come on. You can ride with us until you can get back to your group."
"What group?" I responded, picking up an AC8 from a fallen soldier. "They have gone where I cannot follow."
GUN & ROSES long necklace
VITAMINCODE : GUN & ROSES long necklace
by VitaminJ
Updated 25 Dec 08: Adopted by Evelyn from Singapore. Merry X'mas.^^
This is an exquisite piece of jewellery 'born' 21 Aug 2008. Total length is about 88cm. Shortening or lengthening is possible for a perfect fit. Bubble wrapped.
This necklace; with its corrugated Lantern-shaped iron beads, large antiqued gold faceted beads, a matt-finish barley black copper bucket part, silvery grey & navy blue LEAD-FREE wood beads and a large high-quality white lucite rose penchant all strung together on a dark blue silk-effect polyester rope and 'Oval & twisted 8' LEAD-FREE iron chain all sought to remind me of the group GUN & ROSES, thus its name. I still remember how the music teacher used to bring a cassette player for every music lesson & getting us to learn all the pop songs of those days. Oops...did I just unwittingly revealed my age!
Knots are tied at varying length for balance & aesthetic effects & joined to the iron chain with black jumprings. Complement a slivery grey, dark blue or sky blue tunic with this rugged beauty or contrast it with a sweet feminine pinky ruffled top. Looks great against lemon yellow, white & many other colours.^^
Pardon my average photography skills. Photos don't do justice to this beauty. The sky is kind of cloudy this afternoon so the photos turned out a bit dark. However, I'll stick to my principle of using only natural lighting. Photos don't do justice to this beauty.
Necklace is sealed in plastic wrap & stored in a clean, dry container after photgraphy. I seal my own accessories in clear plastic sheets & store in cool, dry IKEA boxes too to reduce contact with air/dust/moisture when I’m not wearing them. Jewellery boxes take up too much space so I used them only for precious stone & metal pieces (Another little tip mentioned at my blog).
To know about me & my crafts, pls refer to my profile.
***My own design & I take pride in it. Be nice & don't copy or claim it as your own. Tks***

Lightning at Bourheim by Larry Selman
Bourheim, Germany, November 26, 1944 -- Technical Sergeant Joseph A. Farinholt, known as “Lightning Joe” to his buddies, had already earned three Silver Stars in the five and a half months since his unit had landed on Omaha Beach on June 7, 1944. A Guardsman from Baltimore, Maryland, Farinholt was acting platoon leader for the anti-tank platoon of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 175th Infantry, 29th Infantry Division when he earned his fourth and final Silver Star in late November, 1944. No known enlisted man in the U.S. Army earned four Silver Stars during the entire war, much less over such a short span of time.
On November 26, 1944 the 175th Infantry was spread thin around the outer perimeter of the town of Bourheim, which it had captured three days earlier. For the sixth time in those three days, a German armored column attempted to recapture the town, a key to their defense of the strategic city of Julich on the Roer River. The enemy attack opened with such an intense artillery barrage that the 29th Division’s After Action Report cites as it as “…the worst suffered by the division during the war.” Then the German infantry and their supporting tanks pushed forward. Men in the outlying areas fell back toward the town and it looked as though the enemy might finally break through.
Farinholt quickly went into action. One of his three 57 mm antitank gun crews, after firing several rounds at the enemy, all became casualties when a German shell hit a tree near their position. Knowing that the 57 mm gun did not have the penetrating power to pierce a Tiger’s armor, Farinholt loaded, aimed and fired at the tread of the lead Tiger tank, disabling it and halting the advance of the column. However, the tank returned fire with armor-piercing machine gun bullets, wounding Farinholt in more than 20 places and shattering the bones in his right leg below the knee . Despite his wounds he managed to drag himself to his jeep and drive to the battalion headquarters to alert them of the strength and direction of the German attack. Weakened by his injuries and unable to control both the clutch and the gas pedal, Farinholt crashed his jeep into the Headquarters building but refused first aid until he gave his report. Because of his actions and those of his platoon, the German advance was stalled for almost an hour and then diverted to another sector, buying time for the 29th Division to move troops and summon air support to successfully defeat the attack.
The Germans never recaptured Bourheim. Farinholt’s wounds were so severe that he was returned home and spent nearly two years in the hospital. Though he lived nearly 60 more years, he never fully recovered from his injuries. He is depicted here as he fought the war, with several days’ growth of beard, toting his preferred weapon, the M-3 “Grease gun” on his back, and wearing the boots he “liberated” from a dead German soldier in Normandy because they were far more comfortable than the U.S. issue gear.
Farinholt’s remarkable bravery was emblematic of the courage displayed by over 300,000 National Guardsmen who were called to active duty during peacetime in 1940 and 1941, more then doubling the size of the U.S. Army before America entered World War II. While some 75,000 Guard enlisted men went on to become officers during the war, those who – like Farinholt – remained in the enlisted ranks served an equally valuable role by providing the solid core of experienced non-commissioned officer leadership that every unit needs to be successful in combat.
Scotch Thistle Flower
A weed that has established itself around the globe including our place!
Some interesting info. from Wiki about it's place as the emblem of Scotland:
In the language of flowers, the thistle (like the burr) is an ancient Celtic symbol of nobility of character as well as of birth, for the wounding or provocation of a thistle yields punishment.
The thistle has been the national emblem of Scotland since the reign of Alexander III (1249–1286) and was used on silver coins issued by James III in 1470. It is the symbol of the Order of the Thistle, a high chivalric order of Scotland. It is found in many Scottish symbols and as the name of several Scottish football clubs. The thistle, crowned with the Scottish crown, is the symbol of seven of the eight Scottish Police Forces (the exception being the Northern Constabulary). The thistle is also the emblem of Encyclop?dia Britannica, which originated in Edinburgh, Scotland. Carnegie Mellon University features the thistle in its crest.
Origin as a symbol of Scotland
According to a legend, an invading Norse army was attempting to sneak up at night upon a Scots army encampment. During this operation one barefoot Norseman had the misfortune to step upon a thistle, causing him to cry out in pain, thus alerting Scots to the presence of the Norse invaders. Some sources suggest the specific occasion was the Battle of Largs, which marked the beginning of the departure of the King Haakon IV (Haakon the Elder) of Norway who, having control of the Northern Isles and Hebrides, had harried the coast of the Kingdom of Scotland for some years.[3] Which species of thistle is referred to in the original legend is disputed. Popular modern usage favours Cotton Thistle Onopordum acanthium, perhaps because of its more imposing appearance, though it is unlikely to have occurred in Scotland in mediaeval times; the Spear Thistle Cirsium vulgare, an abundant native species in Scotland, is a more likely candidate. Other species, including Dwarf Thistle Cirsium acaule, Musk Thistle Carduus nutans, and Melancholy Thistle Cirsium heterophyllum have also been suggested.

Moody street, Congleton
Moody Street. A conservation area. It was painted nice bright colours to cheer the people up. By law residents have to own brightly coloured cars (Black, grey, silver forbidden). Now it's gorgeous georgian town houses are a most desirable place to live.
Congleton is a flourishing and attractive market town with a population of around 28,000. The town benefits from excellent communication links. The M6 motorway is just 10 minutes away and the railway station has hourly services to Manchester and to Stoke. By train, travellers can be in London in less than two hours. Three main airports, Manchester International, Liverpool John Lennon and East Midlands are all within an hour's drive.
It is a town with ambition, an entrepreneurial spirit and a huge community heart. Congleton is a Fair Trade town (awarded in 2007 and is also the first ArcAngel protected town (2009). The town holds the Guinness World Record for the largest Maypole Dance (2008). It is working towards becoming a Transition Town and has an active group developing initiatives to reduce the carbon footprint of the town. Another group is working on introducing more events and marketing the town as Congleton Beartown 'where friends are made' and local people are key to the success of the town.
The local landscape is dominated by a distinctive, 300m high outcrop known as .The Cloud.. This can be seen from most parts of the town. Formed of Millstone Grit, this dramatic large hill was extensively quarried over many years to make grindstones and provide dark red stone for houses and pavements. The Cloud forms the outline for the Congleton Partnership logo and is used in local branding.
The River Dane winds its way through the centre of the town creating an outstanding wildlife corridor. It is one of the fastest rising rivers in the country. A visit to the river is a must for visitors who will admire not only the old textile mills along its banks but also the historic green-flagged Congleton Park with its ecologically important Town Wood.
Congleton and Macclesfield Canal runs around the eastern side of the town. It is regarded
by narrow boat enthusiasts as the 'gentle highway' and is well used by energetic walkers
who can follow its towpath to Macclesfield in the north or the Potteries in the south.
The Town benefits from many listed buildings and two conservation areas. Many of the
buildings are Georgian, such as the town houses of Moody Street, but there are also earlier
examples such as the Lion and Swan and the Kings Arms both from the 17th Century.
One of the most striking features of the town is its mills, most of which have been converted
to commercial premises; Riverside, on Mountbatten Way, is now the home of a number of
companies including the Enterprise Centre and Learning Centre.
Each summer Congleton looks forward to a superb floral display. School children and youth
organisations are involved in planting baskets and tubs and their efforts have reaped many
awards. The Community Gardens in Lawton Street is a green oasis in the town centre, well
used by local office workers. Here visitors will also see a bronze statue of Sgt George
Eardley, a local hero who was awarded a Victoria Cross for his bravery, during a battle at
Overloon, Holland on October 16th 1944, Congleton Paddling Pool, open late May-
September, is a fantastic free attraction for young children.
Each Christmas the town looks forward to a visit from Father Christmas to switch on the
impressive Christmas lights. Many shops have small, lit Christmas trees above their doors
and the Town Council and Congleton Community Projects host community events. Carnival
comes to town every other year, with the next one in July 2012.
Perhaps Congleton.s best asset is its people, who have a reputation for being friendly, warm
and caring. This is evident in the colossal number of voluntary groups and organisations
which give today.s town a real buzz.
Business in Congleton
Congleton has a strong business infrastructure and a resilient economy. The town has the
support of the local Chamber of Commerce, a fledgling enterprise centre and an associated
learning centre.
Congleton has an estimated 900 VAT registered businesses and a considerable number of
developing micro businesses. Whilst the traditional manufacturing areas of textile and
engineering have been affected by globalisation, the town still has a significant
manufacturing base, with employment in this section well above the national average. In recent years there has been a shift to the finance and professional, tourism and retail sectors. The town is a net exporter of labour.
The Town Centre Plan is a blueprint of how residents and businesses wish to see the town centre develop. It is transformational but retains the Town.s strong heritage. It includes proposals for a modern retail centre and new health complex. A Town Centre Manager was introduced in 2008 and there is an active Traders Forum. Saint Paul - Brancoveanu Monastery
A HYMN FOR THE FEAST OF SAINT PAUL
O CHRIST, YOUR CHOSEN VESSEL
O Christ, your chosen vessel
Did carry forth your name
In mission to all people
The Gospel to proclaim.
He preached with grace resounding,
Becoming all to all,
And we with praise abounding
In thanks acclaim Saint Paul.
Apostle to the nations,
Although in speech unskilled,
He laid the strong foundations
So others then could build.
His call for no division,
To seek the things above,
Has given us the vision:
One body bound by love.
If one part comes to suffer,
The others feel the pain,
If one receives an honour,
We all the joy obtain.
The parts were thus intended –
Together to be one.
All strife should then be ended
In you, the Father’s Son.
To you, with God the Father,
And Spirit, ever one,
We give with Paul our brother
The praise for marvels done.
Conformed in imitation,
May we from factions cease
And spread with jubilation
His words of grace and peace.
(Andrew Hofer, O.P.)
TEXT OF THE DIDACHE
Chapter 1. THE TWO WAYS, ONE OF LIFE AND ONE OF DEATH
There are two ways, one of life and one of death; but a great difference between the two ways. The way of life, then, is this: First, you shall love God who made you; second, your neighbour as yourself; and all things whatever you would should not occur to you, you also to another do not do. And of these sayings the teaching is this: Bless those who curse you, and pray for your enemies, and fast for those who persecute you. For what thank is there, if you love those who love you? Do not also the Gentiles do the same? But love those who hate you; and you shall not have an enemy. Abstain from fleshly and worldly lusts. If one give you a blow upon your right cheek, turn to him the other also; and you shall be perfect. If one forces you to go for one mile, go with him two. If one take away your cloak, give him also your coat. If one take from you your own, ask it not back? for indeed you are not able. Give to everyone who asks you, and ask it not back; for the Father wills that to all should be given of our own blessings (free gifts). Happy is he that gives according to the commandment; for he is guiltless. Woe to the one who receives; for if one having need receives, he is guiltless; but he that receives not having need, shall pay the penalty, why he received and for what, and, coming into straits (confinement), he shall be examined concerning the things which he has done, and he shall not escape thence until he pay back the last farthing. But also now concerning this it has been said, Let your alms sweat in your hands, until you know to whom you should give.
Chapter 2. GROSSER SINS FORBIDDEN
The second commandment of the Teaching; you shall not commit murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not commit paederasty, you shall not commit fornication, you shall not steal, you shall not practice magic, you shall not practice witchcraft, you shall not murder a child by abortion nor kill that which is begotten. You shall not covet the things of your neighbour, you shall not perjure yourself, you shall not bear false witness, you shall not speak, evil, you shall bear no grudge. You shall not be double-minded nor double-tongued; for to be double-tongued is a snare of death. Your speech shall not be false, nor empty, but fulfilled by deed. You shall not be covetous, nor rapacious, nor a hypocrite, nor evil disposed, nor haughty. You shall not take evil counsel against your neighbour. You shall not hate any man; but some you shall reprove, and concerning some you shall pray, and some you shall love more than your own life.
Chapter 3. LUST & OTHER FORBIDDEN SINS
My child, flee from every evil thing, and from every likeness of it. Be not prone to anger, for anger leads the way to murder; neither jealous, nor quarrelsome, nor of hot temper; for out of all these murders are engendered. My child, be not a lustful one; for lust leads the way to fornication; neither a filthy talker, nor of lofty eye; for out of all these adulteries are engendered. My child, be not an observer of omens, since it leads the way to idolatry; neither an enchanter, nor an astrologer, nor a purifier, nor be willing to took at these things; for out of all these idolatry is engendered. My child, be not a liar, since a lie leads the way to theft; neither money-loving, nor vainglorious, for out of all these thefts are engendered. My child, be not a murmurer, since it leads the way to blasphemy; neither self-willed nor evil-minded, for out of all these blasphemies are engendered. But be meek, since the meek shall inherit the earth. Be patient and merciful and honest and gentle and good and always trembling at the words which you have heard. You shall not exalt yourself, nor give over-confidence to your soul. Your soul shall not be joined with lofty ones, but with just and lowly ones shall it have its contact. The events that befall you receive as good, knowing that apart from God nothing comes to pass.

This dress came from my grandmother with a matching swing coat. It is a lilac and silver brocade with great detailing. The dress was rather on the large size for me, so I altered it before heading out to a little Christmas soiree.
A little later than the decades I usually channel, the sentimental value of the dress meant that I had to work it in the best early 60's fashion.
Temptation.. :D
One of my favourite pairs of shoes! Black leather with silver graff up the sides. Couldn't resist the textures!

Silver Dollar Heart-Shaped Purse
Tired of carrying the kitchen sink on my shoulder, I designed & made this purse in an effort to "cut back". Make no bones about it-- there was no cutting back on cuteness and style.
Inspired by Japanese Kawaii, I designed the heart shape body of the purse. Bleached out acid-washed indigo denim was used for the purse body.
I stuck a giant "silver dollar" sign applique on it....cuz a girl just loves her $$$.
I used the Rosewood font for the Dollar Sign Applique. Love this font- has an old-timey feeling and is very bold and graphic with the two-tone shadowing.
I used indigo blue denim with silver "faux sequin" textured vinyl for the applique.
Totally love how this turned out.....perfect little bag to throw my keys, phone, money, and a tube of lipstick, and even a pair of glasses into.
Strap is made of cotton webbing. I made it long enough to wear across my body.

The name for this kind of mug is stein, which comes from the German word Stein, which means stone. The reason for this is that these objects were generally made of stoneware. But the name stuck with the shape even when done in other materials - in this case silver. The stein dates to 1590 and the silver spoon to 1580 - belonging to the Elisabeth of Denmark (1524-1586), the wife of the two Mecklenburg-Schwerin dukes - first Magnus III (1509-1550) and then his brother Ulrich III (1527-1603). The daughter from the second marriage, Sophie, became the queen of Denmark.
Schloss Gustrow is one of the most important building of the Renaissance in northern Germany, built in the 16th century. It now houses a museum showing plenty of interesting pieces from the Middle ages and Renaissance.

Birthday Gift ~ Personalized Wrapping Paper
We just celebrated my niece's birthday. I custom-designed a necklace and earrings for her made of sterling silver and pink and clear crystals (see previous photo).
I wanted the gift wrap to match the colors of the gift, and finding ribbon was no problem, but solid pink gift wrap was nowhere to be found.
Enter creativity! In her book, Presentations, Carolyne Roehm recommends designing your own gift wrap in Photoshop and printing it out on an inkjet printer. So ... I gave it a try, and I'm very pleased with the results.
Large gifts would be difficult to wrap this way unless you have a large-format printer, but this gift was small, so one 8-1/2 x 11 sheet of white copy paper worked perfectly. I printed a matching card using the same pattern on heavy white card stock.
Kathryne very carefully and attentively opened the package being sure not to tear the paper. She said it was going on her bulletin board. Picture me smiling :0) ... giving is so much fun!
Happy birthday, Kathryne!
Update: This is my first photo on Flickr to receive 1,000 views (and 2,500 views as of January 25, 2010). Thank you to everyone who helped make that happen!
