My son has a toy hamonica, a bright blue one with fish on it. Naturally I end up playing with it and make enough of a racket to start seriously annoying everyone in the house. What I was surprised at was how many childhood memories came flooding back from when I had similar toys and used to love playing with them.

I can remember thinking that when I was older I'd buy a decent one and learn to play it properly.

So, I've decided to learn the harmonica. After a bit of reading I found that a 10 hole diatonic type in C is ideal for beginners so what you see here is the one I've bought off e-bay for ?4.99. Fair enough, it's not exactly a decent one but I figured I'll start with something cheap in case it turns into just a passing phase - although I'm already looking at nice box sets.

Anyway, I'm now busy learning a couple of favourites, "Piano Man" by Billy Joel and "Man of Constant Sorrow" from the film "Oh Brother Where Art Thou". I'm doing all the typical beginner stuff like learning to bend and struggling with hole 2. There's some great stuff on Youtube on this.

Naturally after buying something shiny, it's only a matter of time before the camera starts pointing at it. This was taken with the Fuji S200exr and the harmonica was on a sheet of white paper with a couple of others used to construct a tent over it to control reflections. I had a Canon 430EXII flash pointing through the tent from camera left triggered with a Cactus V3 radio trigger.

Ingredients:
1 damaged Fuji F20 - a dead lens motor from being dropped by me
1 damaged Fuji F20 - dead LCD from some unfortunate EBayer
1 set of jeweler's screwdrivers
1 cheapskate engineer who won't pay $200 for a replacement F20

Directions:
Take back panel off both F20s, transplant LCDs. Dork around with ribbon connector until it plugs back in.
Turn on Fuji with working lens motor and LCD. Delete picture of half naked previous owner from camera memory.
Present to wife.

People seem to be intrigued by memory, and by its sometimes spectacular failure in (for example) people with amnesia. However, students of memory sometimes fail to retain this fascination. The reason is clear: in order to study memory we must carry out carefully-designed experiments, which can seem boring even when they are exciting science. Fortunately, we now know enough about memory to relate laboratory studies to the world beyond. In other words, our scientific knowledge of memory and how it works can help us to explain those aspects of memory that most people find of greatest interest.
