I'm shooting Claire and Christopher's wedding next weekend. But before the wedding, they asked me to photograph Claire's ring. It's a stunning piece of art, a unique piece that perfectly suits them, and the story behind the ring is incredible. Christopher envisioned the ring he wanted to give Claire when he proposed to her. But the problem was he wanted to create a unique mount that would show off the beautiful red Padparadscha Sapphire he had gotten. Two different jewelers told him they couldn't make a ring that would safely hold the stone. So, he did what any creative engineer who works in a prototype lab would do, he made it himself. He created the design in CAD and then ran a finite element analysis to ensure the ring would produce exactly the right amount of force to safely hold the sapphire, and precision machined it out of titanium. I asked Chris for the CAD images and am posting them below. Amazing! Technique: Cleaned water marks in the recesses under the stone using a very small piece of wet paper towel. Rubbed the ring down to remove finger prints and handled with gloves to prevent adding any. Used blower brush to remove any dust. Used double sized clear tape to stick ring upright on white seamless paper. Used SB-800 in small softbox as single light. In Photoshop, removed tape and replaced with shadow and cleaned up some minor surface markings that you can see at this high magnification.

I know now why people like Worlock don't turn out work at high rates. The differences between this and the first version are very small- but there are tons of them. I went truly all out on this one, about seven hours of shading and other modifications, and the result is, easily, my best-rendered gun to date.

Even though the basic structure is the same, the crazy amounts of tedious color work and shading details ARE noticeable. Especially when compared side by side to version 1.

Featured on this gun most prominently are the polished titanium suppressor and improved light perspective all around. I touched up the magazine, the buttplate, the sight, the charging handle, the charging handle groove, the cheekrest, the folding foregrip mount, the rails, the ejection port, the SPW logo and frame, and most of the screws and bolts (including indentations on the body.) Notice especially the effects on the "barrel" of the holosight and the shine on the suppressor. Getting the colors right was tough, and took about an hour to get just right. I might try to do a tutorial on them.

This is an example of about 99% effort. And it's also a good example of why it's usually good to move on after 85-90.... the seven hours of work today, polishing this thing, didn't go NEARLY as far as the hours on the first day did. But since I've got the time, brushing up my favorite SMG seemed an okay use of time.

Birding trips, Ornithological safaris in Kenya range from a few hours, a full day, to several weeks. A short birding excursion tour around Nairobi may include Nairobi National Park, the only wildlife park and game reserve next to a cosmopolitan city, just 7km away from the city. Kenya has one of the richest avifauna in Africa with around 1090 bird species recorded. At least eight of these are national endemics. Around 170 species of Kenya’s birds species are Pale arctic migrants (11 species of them with a local breeding population too), mainly from eastern Europe, Russia, the middle East and Siberia. Another 60 species migrate regularly within the Afro tropics or from Madagascar. Some 335 species are found in forest; 230 species are entirely forest dependent and 110 species are “forest specialists” requiring intact, undisturbed habitat and Forty species of global conservation concern are known to occur in Kenya. Four of these are critically Endangered, two Endangered and 16 species are Vulnerable.

Flamingos Day 01: Nairobi – Lake Naivasha.

After breakfast we depart from our Nairobi hotel for a scenic drive through the Great North road to Lake Naivasha. Stop en-route at the view points of the Great Rift Valley for stunning views arriving Lake Naivasha by mid-morning for bird walk before time for lunch at Lake Naivasha Lodge. Lake Naivasha being close to Lake Nakuru and 65 miles from Nairobi, is freshwater Lake. It was declared a bird sanctuary in 1967 and also supports pastoral industries of wine and flowers. During our full day field trip to Lake Naivasha, we study the birds of the region such as herons, fish eagles, ospreys, black crakes, and lily-trotters. Dominated by the shadow of Mt. Longonot, few lakes in the world have a more commanding or spectacular setting than Naivasha. We also have an excursion to the Elsa mere Center. Activities include reliving the experience of Joy Adamson and Elsa while viewing “Born Free.” Lake Naivasha being on the Rift floor is home to an incredible variety of species. Over 450 species have been recorded here. Dinner and overnight stay at Lake Naivasha Lodge.

Day 02: Lake Naivasha – Lake Nakuru
This morning we leave Naivasha and head for Lake Nakuru Park, regarded by avid birders’ as the greatest World ornithological spectacle on the Earth. The park is famous for its millions of pink flamingos lining on the lake shore, arriving by mid morning at Lake Nakuru for a game drive en route before checking-in at Lake Nakuru Lodge for Lunch. Afternoon game drive followed by a walk along the shores which will also allow us to see the many wild animals in the park and especially the park is the Sanctuary to the Black Rhino, White Rhino and the Rothschild Giraffe. Here we’ll have the chance to look out at some of the common species like the Lesser and Greater Flamingos, African fish Eagle, Tawny Eagle, Green Wood Hoopoes, Cliff Chat, Great White and Pink Backed Pelicans plus other intra- African Migrants. Dinner and Overnight stay today will be at Lake Nakuru Lodge.

Day 03: Lake Nakuru – Masai Mara
Soon after breakfast, drive across the floor of the Great Rift Valley the longest rift in the crust of the Earth to Masai Mara Game Reserve the unspoiled Savannah. Masai Mara is actually the northern portion of the Great Plains ecosystem in the neighboring Tanzania called Serengeti. It is a home to the “big five” lion, buffalo, rhino, leopard and elephant as well cheetah, zebra, giraffe and vast herds of plain antelope and numerous and other wildlife. Our accommodation for the nights will be at one of the excellent lodge Mara Sopa Lodge. Sopa is a Masai word meaning welcome and indeed this is a tradition which has be well adopted by the lodge to all guest. Set in the Oloolaimutia valley the lodge blends in the perfectly with its surrounding hillside landscape. After lunch and some time to relax and perhaps take a dip in the pool, you will depart with your driver guide for an afternoon game drive in search of the big five. So I would never take or post a photo like this. It was a bit weird taking pictures of a friend wearing only bottoms and a sweatshirt. I am very uncomfortable with sexuality and try to flee from it as much as I can. I wanted to capture her beauty in a sexy way without being sexual. I may post more, but I want you to know that these photos are meant to be artistic, tasteful, and expressive rather than sexual. This shoot helped me get over my discomfort with the human body. I think that shying from sexuality can be a good thing; I believe it keeps me from getting into trouble and will help me when I'm married. I think this may have helped with future shoots as well and I'm thankful for Amy's willingness to help, as awkward as this is for me.

A candle is a solid block of fuel (commonly wax) and an embedded wick, which is lit to provide light, and sometimes heat.

Today, most candles are made from paraffin. Candles can also be made from beeswax, soy, other plant waxes, and tallow (a by-product of beef-fat rendering). Gel candles are made from a mixture of paraffin and plastic.[citation needed]

A candle manufacturer is traditionally known as a chandler. Various devices have been invented to hold candles, from simple tabletop candle holders, to elaborate chandeliers.

The heat of the match used to light the candle melts and vaporizes a small amount of fuel. Once vaporized, the fuel combines with oxygen in the atmosphere to form a flame. This flame provides sufficient heat to keep the candle burning via a self-sustaining chain of events: the heat of the flame melts the top of the mass of solid fuel, the liquefied fuel then moves upward through the wick via capillary action, and the liquefied fuel is then vaporized to burn within the candle's flame.

The burning of the fuel takes place in several distinct regions (as evidenced by the various colors that can be seen within the candle's flame). Within the bluer regions, hydrogen is being separated from the fuel and burned to form water vapor. The brighter, yellower part of the flame is the remaining carbon being oxidized to form carbon dioxide.[citation needed]

As the mass of solid fuel is melted and consumed, the candle grows shorter. Portions of the wick that are not emitting vaporized fuel are consumed in the flame. The incineration of the wick limits the exposed length of the wick, thus maintaining a constant burning temperature and rate of fuel consumption. Components

Wax

The candle can be made of paraffin (a byproduct of petroleum refining), stearin (now produced almost exclusively from palm waxes), beeswax (a byproduct of honey collection), gel (a mixture of resin and mineral oil), some plant waxes (generally palm, carnauba, bayberry, or soybean wax), tallow (rarely used since the introduction of affordable and cheap wax alternatives) or spermaceti (extracted from the head of a Sperm Whale). The size of the flame and corresponding rate of burning is controlled largely by the candle wick.

The most basic production method of candles generally entails melting the solid fuel by the controlled application of heat. The liquid is then poured into a mold or a wick is repeatedly immersed in the liquid to create a dipped tapered candle. Often fragrance oils, essential oils or aniline-based dye is added.

Candles made of beeswax burn more cleanly and release fewer chemicals than petroleum-based paraffin waxes. Highly refined paraffin wax, however, can burn as cleanly as natural waxes, creating fewer particulates during combustion than synthetic candles.[citation needed] The type of wick and inclusion of any scents and/or dyes have a much greater impact on the release of compounds, particulates, and smoke, regardless of the base material. The Queen Anne style original structure and Renaissance Revival style Annex are clad in red Philadelphia pressed brick with brownstone trim, and effusively ornamented with unglazed red terra cotta, that on the original building was likely produced by the Boston Terra Cotta Co. or Perth Amboy Terra Cotta Co., the leading manufacturers of the day.

The building is terminated by a c. 1911 bracketed pressed metal cornice, and had an elaborate, high dormered mansard roof until it was destroyed by fire in 1930. Though little known, the highly prolific Rentz (1855­1906) practiced in New York from around 1880 to his death, and was commissioned largely for flats and tenement buildings.

Throughout its history as one of Greenwich Village/East Village’s leading public rental halls and social centers, Webster Hall has been the venue for countless balls, dances, receptions, lectures, meetings, conventions, political and union rallies, military functions, concerts, performances, festivities, and sporting and fundraising events, particularly for the working-class and immigrant populations of the Lower East Side. In the 1910s and 20s, it became famous for its masquerade balls, following the success of a 1913 fund-raiser for the socialist magazine The Masses, first attracting the Village’s bohemian population, which nicknamed it the “Devil’s Playhouse.” The hall was significant as a gathering place for the city’s early twentieth-century lesbian and gay community, who felt welcome to attend the balls in drag, and then sponsored their own events by the 1920s.

Among the many notables who attended events here at this time were artists Charles Demuth, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, as well as writers Djuna Barnes and Scott Fitzgerald. A favorite venue for progressive, leftist, and union political organizations, the hall was attended by such luminaries as Samuel Gompers, Margaret Sanger, Emma Goldman, and Dorothy Day, and was the site of the formation of the Progressive Labor Party in 1887, and the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America in 1914.

From 1953 to 1968, RCA Victor Records operated a notable sound recording studio here, which was famed for its acoustics. Pop vocal, jazz, Latin, folk, and gospel phonograph albums were recorded here by such disparate musical icons as Louis Armstrong, Harry Belafonte, Perry Como, Coleman Hawkins, Lena Horne, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Stan Getz, Sergio Franchi, and Joe Williams. The hall was noted as a venue for Broadway cast recordings, which included Julie Andrews in The Boy Friend, Mary Martin in Peter Pan, Barbara Cook in Show Boat, Ethel Merman in Annie Get Your Gun, Carol Channing in Hello, Dolly!, and Liza Minnelli in Flora, the Red Menace, as well as those of classical artists such as Artur Rubinstein, Marian Anderson, and Beverly Sills in Giulio Cesare. In the 1970s-80s, the building housed Casa Galicia, a meeting and event space, and the rock club The Ritz. It was also the location for a number of movie scenes, such as “Raging Bull” (1980). The name Webster Hall was returned in 1990 with the current club.

DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS

The Nineteenth- and Early Twentieth-Century Development and History of (Today’s) East Village Neighborhood

The area of today’s Greenwich Village was, during the eighteenth century, the location of the small rural hamlet of Greenwich, as well as the country seats and summer homes of wealthy downtown aristocrats, merchants, and capitalists. A number of cholera and yellow fever epidemics in lower Manhattan between 1799 and 1822 led to an influx of settlers in the Greenwich area, with the population quadrupling between 1825 and 1840.

Previously undeveloped tracts of land were speculatively subdivided for the construction of town houses and rowhouses. To the east, during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, was Dutch Governor Peter Stuyvesant’s farm. St. Mark’s-in-the-Bowery Church (1799)2 was built on a higher, dry piece of land, while the area to the east of today’s Second Avenue, known as Stuyvesant Meadows, remained an undeveloped marshy area. In the late eighteenth century, the area east of Second Avenue was the estate of Mangle Minthorn, father-in-law of Daniel Tompkins (1775-1825), governor of New York (1807-17) and U.S. vice president under James Monroe (1817-25). Both Stuyvesant and Minthorn were slave owners.

In 1832, the Common Council created the 15th Ward out of the eastern section of the large 9th Ward, its boundaries being Sixth Avenue, Houston and 14th Streets, and the East River. After that you can use it to bruise, to pound or to knead anything, to pollute a shrine, to wear out clothes, to prolong a task, to waste time, to ravage a country, to wear down resistance, to squander money, to use something constantly, or to be much busied or practiced. The Primary meaning of the compound verb, syn-tribw is, says Liddle and Scott, to rub two sticks together to obtain light as in "suntribw ta puria" "I use a rubbing motion to make fire.' or "I rub fire from an object." I think it's more like that the term refers to something like flint and steel or some more efficient rubbing technology than rubbing sticks together. Sephardi Jews (Hebrew: ??????, Standard S?fardi Tiberian S?p?ar?di; plural ??????, Standard S?faradim Tiberian S?p?ar?dim; Spanish Sefardies; Portuguese Sefarditas, Greek ????????, Turkish Sefarad, Judaeo-Spanish Sefardies) are a subgroup of Jews originating in the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa, usually defined in contrast to Ashkenazi or Mizrahi Jews.

Definition

A Sephardi is a Jew in the Iberian Peninsula (modern Spain and Portugal) and Maghreb. This includes both the descendants of Jews expelled from Spain under the Alhambra decree of 1492, or from Portugal by order of King Manuel I in 1497 and the descendants of crypto-Jews who left the Peninsula in later centuries.

In modern times, the term has also been applied to Jews who may not have been born Sephardi (or even Jewish) but attend Sephardic synagogues and practice Sephardic traditions.

Today there are around 12,000 Sephardic Jews in Spain and 2,500 in Portugal[2]. There is also a community of 600 in Gibraltar.[3]

The name comes from Sepharad (Hebrew: ????, Modern S?farad Tiberian S?p?ara? / S?p?ara? ; Turkish: Sefarad), a Biblical location.[4]

This was probably the "Saparda" mentioned in Persian inscriptions: the location of that is disputed, but may have been Sardis in Asia Minor. "Sepharad" was identified by later Jews as the Iberian Peninsula, and still means "Spain" in modern Hebrew.

For religious purposes, and in modern Israel, "Sephardim" is often used in a wider sense to include most Jews of Asian and African origin, who use a Sephardic style of liturgy.

This article is mostly concerned with Sephardim in the narrower ethnic sense, rather than in this broader Modern Israeli Hebrew definition.

The term Sephardi can also describe the nusach (Hebrew language, "liturgical tradition") used by Sephardi Jews in their Siddur (prayer book).

A nusach is defined by a liturgical tradition's choice of prayers, order of prayers, text of prayers and melodies used in the singing of prayers.

Sephardim traditionally pray using Minhag Sefarad, which is quite similar to Nusach Edot haMizrach (liturgy of the Eastern Congregations). For more details of the Sephardic liturgy see Sephardic Judaism.

Note that the term Nusach Sefard or Nusach Sfarad does not refer to the liturgy generally recited by Sephardim, but rather to an alternative Eastern European liturgy used by many Hasidim.

Divisions

Historically, Sephardim are those Jews associated with the Iberian Peninsula.

The most prominent sub-group consists of the descendants of the Jews expelled from Spain in 1492, who settled in various parts of the Ottoman Empire, in particular Salonica and Istanbul, and whose traditional language is Judaeo-Spanish, sometimes known as Ladino.

Another branch settled in Northern Morocco, and spoke a variant of Judaeo-Spanish known as Haketia. Several of these "Moroccan" Jews emigrated back to the Iberian Peninsula to form the core of the Gibraltar community (see History of the Jews in Gibraltar). In the 19th century, modern Spanish gradually replaced Haketia as mother tongue among most Moroccan Sephardim[5].

A third sub-group, known as Spanish and Portuguese Jews, consists of Jews whose families remained in Spain and Portugal as ostensible Christians, and later reverted to Judaism in Italy, the Netherlands, Northern Germany, England or the New World.

A fourth sub-group, known as Crypto-Jews, are those who choose to remain hidden since the Spanish and Mexican Inquisitions, but practice secret Jewish rites in privacy.

From the perspective of the present day, the first three sub-groups look in retrospect like separate branches, each with its own traditions, though some degree of merger is taking place as Spanish and Portuguese congregations increasingly include Jews of other backgrounds. In earlier centuries, and as late as the editing of the Jewish

Encyclopedia at the beginning of the twentieth century, they were usually regarded as together forming a continuum, with the Jewish community of Livorno acting as the clearing-house of personnel and traditions between the three sub-groups as well as the main publishing centre.

In some ways the relationship was a symbiotic one, with the Western (Spanish and Portuguese) sub-group contributing the publishing facilities, the secular learning and the political protection and the other two sub-groups contributing the religious learning.

Mavis arrived at the Sanctuary and was feeling a bit foolish that she hadn't checked to see if they were open Christmas Eve, before taking the cab ride over. It certainly looked deserted, but she tried the door and it swung freely on the hinges.
"Hello," a woman in a nearby office said.
"I ... I'm here to look at the cats," replied Mavis.
"Well, we're not actually open, I'm just here finishing some paperwork, I should have locked the door." She looked at the elderly lady walking toward her and continued "Still, we never turn away a good home." She explained to Mavis their adoption policy and gave her the paperwork to fill out, which Mavis went through diligently and handed back in order.
"Might I look at the cats, now?", Mavis enquired.
"We have to check your references, first," and the woman dialed the phone number of Mavis's veterinarian. "No, answer, she's probably closed over Christmas."
Mavis hadn't considered that there would be a need for references.
"Do you have anyone else who is a professional and can vouch for your ability to care for a cat." asked the woman.
"No," replied Mavis "I guess I'll have to come back another time." And as she turned to go to the door she remembered something, "Will this do?" she asked tentatively, as she handed the woman the note the vet tech had written her - it was on her vets stationery, "But, I'd like to have it back, please."
The woman read the note and a smile crept over her face, "Of course, I'll photocopy it . Would you like to look at the kittens, Mrs. Johns?"
"No," said Mavis, "I would like to get an adult cat... I know what it's like when you get older and you feel alone."
"They're through the door on your left, I'll be in my office, take your time."
Mavis walked through the door and before her were rows of clean stainless steel cages, each holding it's precious charge confined, until he or she were chosen. The descriptions on the cards above the door were telling. "Marcus. Sheds too much.", "Sadie. Clawed the furniture.", "Devon. Doesn't use litterbox" or more often "Unknown. Stray". Mavis's heart was heavy, it seemed an impossible task to choose one and leave the rest. She wondered why she had come, it was just too sad and she had had enough sadness for one life. She was standing in front of the cages, reconsidering, when she felt the touch of a soft paw on her bare arm. "Oh, you sweet thing," she said, the paw-touch reminded her of Samantha. She couldn't read the card through her tear-filled eyes but she could see that this cat looked nothing like the colourful girl she'd had before.
Fluffy didn't like being alone, nearly seventy cats around her and still she felt all alone. She waited patiently for her big sister to come and get her, but she didn't come. It was never quiet, here, but the women who cared for her really did care, she could tell from their soft voices and gentle touch. She saw the elderly lady standing in front of her cage and thought she was going to feed her or clean her litterbox. But then she looked at the lady's face and saw her sadness. She could feel that this woman needed her, that she had a deep emotional wound that only she could heal. Very carefully she reached out and touched the woman's arm. When the woman looked down at her she looked straight into the woman's eyes and thought "I can help you calm your sorrowful heart." The woman stood and looked at her for a long time, the calm white cat could see that the tears in her eyes were slowly disappearing. And then the lady walked away.
Mavis walked away from the cages and back to the front office, "Do you want to look at the kittens, now?," asked the woman. "No," replied Mavis with a lump in her throat, "I've found the perfect cat, can I take her home?"
One of the friendly women Fluffy knew opened the door to the cage and let Mavis pet her new cat. "Hello kitty, I"m Mavis, I'm going to be your new mom.", and she glided her hand down Fluffy's back "What happened to her tail?"
"She was born with a kink, she can't lift her tail up above her back".
"Well, she's perfect to me" Mavis replied as she placed Fluffy into the carrier, "Could you call me a cab?"
Soon they were home and Fluffy was purring contentedly on Mavis's lap, while Mavis contemplated what to name her. Fluffy was too common, this unique cat needed a unique name, and then it came to her - it's Christmas Eve, I'll call her Evie - that was just right.

First an important announcement: today is my birthday! :-D

And since it is my birthday, I had really hard time of being frustrated of anything.
But when I had to go to the store today and I grabbed my keys I realized that there's something I'm frustrated about.
In my key ring there's of course the key to my house, but what is so frustrating are all the things I need in order to get to my workplace: a key, three electronic tags for different gates and doors, id cards. One would think that I work in a high security goverment office, but no, I work in a ordinary company, that has nothing to do with anything that would demand so much security.
I suppose that's just how things are nowadays, we have to be behind locked doors.

It's a mood ring that i bought at the beginning of fall quarter 2010. I didn't know why i bought it until a couple days later, but even as i figured it out I already knew it was gonna serve a different purpose. Later it broke and it's now permanently black, i took that as even more of a reason to keep it for myself rather than give it to the person i had bought it for. I kept it as a reminder and every time i'm nervous or mad or just thinking about that certain aspect of my life. I find myself playing with the ring and it calms me down. There has been times when I'm so mad that I just want to forget everything and one time I even chucked the ring into a field. I ended up spending 40 minutes trying to find it. I can't get rid of it because it reminds me that it's worth it. It helps me to get up when I'm down and keep going. It doesn't let me give up. This simple broken mood ring means more to me than I let on.

I bought this ring right before I left for Europe last July. It was two dollars at a tiny gift shop in my town. When my body warmed up, I noticed that my ring turned entirely purple instead of multi-colored. It amazed me and many others during my trip because I kept showing them how it would change when I put it up to ice cold water. I've gone back to the store twice since than and haven't had any others. I don't think it is a mood ring because it is supposed to be glass and there is absolutely no metal on it.

I love my ring and I've worn it every day since. It has my two favorite colors:green and purple.

You are always in my heart...I was in my room preparing for coming exams and suddenly I felt like taking some photos. I was chasing a girl at that time and I went to meet her everyday even during the exam period. As I wanted to create some images can make her happy so this idea came out again. I know this is an old famous trick created by someone that I don't know, but maybe I was the first one who created the image with 2 circular thing and 2 hearts in one photo. The patient was an 80-yr old male with a history of lymphoma (in remission), status-post chemotherapy. He gave history of long-standing, non-healing psoriatic area on scrotal skin which recently developed drainage.

Paget's Disease of the anogenital region may be a primary malignancy derived from the local sweat glands or it may represent an epidermotrophic metastasis from a visceral malignancy such as carcinoma of the rectum, bladder, urethra, or prostate. The patient is undergoing further clinical evaluation at this time.

The patient presented with hilar lymphadenopathy, and no tumor was seen on bronchoscopy. The pulmonologist did a transbronchial fine needle aspiration and obtained innumerable groups of tumor cells, other showing better glandular differentiation than those shown here, including signet ring cells. This slide shows an illustrative juxtaposition of tumor cells and normal nodal lymphocytes in the background. I have no idea what the primary site is, but I would want to look first in the stomach.

Pixar: 20 Years of Animation exhibition at the science museum in London.

From the various stories about the exhibition, the Pixar zoetrope is creating a lasting impression on exhibit attendees. Paul Lieberman (The Los Angeles Times) wrote about the display at MoMA:

"The show stopper is a re-creation of the 19th century's version of high-tech entertainment technology, a zoetrope. During one of the six visits that MoMA curators made to Pixar in California, Pete Docter, director of Monsters, Inc., mentioned how he'd seen one at the Tokyo museum of Pixar's Japanese counterpart, Studio Ghibli, and one thing led to another.

The one in New York is 7 feet tall and has three-dimensional characters from Toy Story affixed to a oval base. When the thing starts spinning like a carousel and a strobe light flashes, it creates an illusion much like a frenzied animated scene: There's Buzz bouncing atop a ball, Woody riding Bullseye the horse and tiny parachutists appearing to jump from a red, white and blue bucket. And on the very outside, there are tiny aliens, waving, right at the eye level of the toddlers who press their eyes to the glass, a touch suggested by Lasseter.

"For the last two months, this was all I worked on," said one of the Pixar animators who created the zoetrope, Dan Mason, who was standing by to take in the reactions of the kids and adults alike — and to make sure none of the pieces flew off. "We used a lot of epoxy," he said. "We all had scary dreams about what it would look like if one broke off."

This is one case in which the museum audience sees only the final product and none of the sausage-making. Mason said they first animated the scene in a computer, then created each Woody and Buzz out of plastic and glue with a three-dimensional printer, that alone taking 12 hours for each of the dozens of figures needed. The zoetrope figures to have a long life, going on with the show next to London after it closes here in February, then to Tokyo. Pixar officials say they expect to bring the exhibit to a museum in L.A. as well."

"Turning toward the opposite wall, visitors gasped and applauded again as a computerized zoetrope swung into action, using strobe lights and a revolving stage to create a ravishing bit of 3-D animation that orchestrated multiple versions of the characters from Toy Story 2 into bouncy concentric rings of repeating actions. Woody rides his horse while, circling in the opposite direction, Buzz Lightyear bounces along on a brightly colored ball. Aliens dodge the horse's hooves and catapult repeatedly into holes, thanks to the well-timed landings of Wheezy the Penguin on the end of a seesaw. At the center, parachuting toy soldiers spiral repeatedly downward, like grooms escaping from a wedding cake.

Any movement or change in body language from Woody's flailing limbs to the aliens' vibrating antennae represents a different, meticulously made toylike sculpture, as becomes clear each time a cycle is completed. But in action, the ensemble effect is of the grand finale of a Broadway musical in miniature. At the opening, most of us were as rapt as children seeing the Christmas windows at Lord & Taylor for the first time. And indeed, most of us were seeing something for the first time. The zoetrope was made especially for the exhibition; the only other one is in the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, Japan."
