14k White Gold Cubic Zirconia Ring. Gold Price Per Ounce History. Gold Diamond Wedding Bands.
14k White Gold Cubic Zirconia Ring
- Cubic zirconia (or CZ) is the cubic crystalline form of zirconium dioxide (ZrO2). The synthesized material is hard, optically flawless and usually colorless, but may be made in a variety of different colors. It should not be confused with zircon, which is a zirconium silicate (ZrSiO4).
- Cubic Zirconia is a man made gem which mimics diamond, yet does not have the same intrinsic properties such as hardness. Through a process developed in 1977, "CZ's" as they are often called, are mass produced and much less expensive than diamonds.
- A colorless form of zirconia that is very similar to diamond in refractivity and appearance
- A synthesized mineral used as an affordable substitute for diamonds. While similar in appearance, diamonds are somewhat harder and lighter. Cubic zirconia gemstones have been made commercially since 1976.
- A silver-colored alloy of gold with nickel, platinum, or another metal

18K YELLOW GOLD PENDANT. GOLD PENDANT
18k yellow gold pendant. 1853 gold dollar coin. The process of refining gold.
18k Yellow Gold Pendant
- Gold, also called golden, is one of a variety of orange-yellow color blends used to give the impression of the color of the element gold.
- While pure gold is yellow in color, colored gold can be developed into various colors. These colors are generally obtained by alloying gold with other elements in various proportions.
- The most popular gold alloy. An alloy of gold, silver, copper, and often zinc.
- an adornment that hangs from a piece of jewelry (necklace or earring)
- pendent: held from above; "a pendant bunch of grapes"
- chandelier: branched lighting fixture; often ornate; hangs from the ceiling
- Hanging downward; pendent
- The carat (abbreviation ct or kt) is a measure of the purity of gold alloys. In the United States and Canada, the spelling karat is used.
Motion Pendant
A pendant from the fold formed series.
I have fold formed sterling silver, 18K yellow gold and pure gold. The physical properities of these metals are very different. Sterling silver is fluid and can yield spectacular volumes. 18K yellow gold work hardens quickly and must be annealed frequently during the folding, milling and unfolding. 24K gold does work harden to some extent. Considering the softness of pure gold, the increased hardness can be an advantage during unfolding.
Inspired by history and ancient art
I made this unique bold pendant. The "coin" features a crusaders' cross, which I carved in wax and then cast in recycled sterling silver.
This one-of-a-kind custom gift is from parents to their son, incorporating precious metal from some of their old jewelry. The Latin message on the back means "be not afraid".
Hand set in a bezel, which I sculpted from 18K royal yellow gold, it hangs elegantly on a blackened solid sterling silver chain.

30 Welcome to City of the Gold Coast - Numinbah QLD & NSW State Border
A very uninteresting, ugly and unimaginative sign welcoming the traveller to City of Gold Coast. Because this area is in the extreme end of the City, it would appear thatlocal government does not consider if worth placing an attractive sign there. This contrasts to the signs over the border in New South Wales as seen in my pictures 32, 28,31and 29.

Inflation
Even from a biased and small coin collection as the one I have, one can easily see the ravages of galloping inflation. From the heavy, impressive 1883 coin made with real silver, to the worthless coinage of the last two decades, via a quick turnover of denominations.
It certainly makes for interesting numismatics... but the tale of these coins is that of much economic suffering by millions of people, caused by the mismanagement by a few and the apathy of the many.

Paige's teachers use touchpoints to help her with numbers. They're dots on the numbers that correspond to its value (three dots on a 3, for example.) They help with addition and subtraction and now she's using touchpoints with currency. Here, Paige and Pete are working on her homework - drawing touchpoints on coins to help learn their value.

This stunning gold filled diamond cut cable chain is 20 inches long and one millimeter in diameter. The diamond cut cable chain is gorgeous, so much so, it is fabulous alone or with your favorite signature pendant. Gold filled is a layer of gold which is permanently bonded to a core of base metal using heat and pressure. In the USA, to qualify as gold filled; the metal must be at least 1/20th gold by weight, so there is far more gold than in gold plating. This is a finely polished square link box chain necklace which gleams beautifully to enhance your skin tone or your wardrobe selection. It is versatile enough to dress up or to wear with casual ensembles. Care of Gold Jewelry Gold is lasting and durable but can get scratched or dented if treated roughly. Also, beware of chemicals. Gold's worst enemy is chlorine. Keep your gold jewelry away from chlorinated cleaning products and out of swimming pools, etc. On a related note, acids, abrasives and other harsh chemicals found in some common household cleaning solutions can weaken your jewelry or damage its finish. It is best to remove all gold jewelry when handling these types of products. Gold can lose its luster over time if repeatedly exposed to dust, moisture, perspiration and makeup. Make sure to clean your jewelry regularly to remove these substances; you can use a cleaning solution of lukewarm water and a mild soap. After cleaning and rinsing, always dry and polish jewelry with a chamois or soft cloth to avoid scratches and to bring out its shine. When you are not wearing your gold jewelry protect it by storing it safely in a jewelry box or keeping it wrapped in a soft cloth when not being worn. We ship to the Military. Salt: A World History
Homer called salt a divine substance. Plato described it as especially dear to the gods. Today we take salt for granted, a common, inexpensive substance that seasons food or clears ice from roads, a word used casually in expressions ("salt of the earth," take it with a grain of salt") without appreciating their deeper meaning. However, as Mark Kurlansky so brilliantly relates in his world- encompassing new book, salt-the only rock we eat-has shaped civilization from the very beginning. Its story is a glittering, often surprising part of the history of mankind.
Until about 100 years ago, when modern chemistry and geology revealed how prevalent it is, salt was one of the most sought-after commodities, and no wonder, for without it humans and animals could not live. Salt has often been considered so valuable that it served as currency, and it is still exchanged as such in places today. Demand for salt established the earliest trade routes, across unknown oceans and the remotest of deserts: the city of Jericho was founded almost 10,000 years ago as a salt trading center. Because of its worth, salt has provoked and financed some wars, and been a strategic element in others, such as the American Revolution and the Civil War. Salt taxes secured empires across Europe and Asia and have also inspired revolution (Gandhi's salt march in 1930 began the overthrow of British rule in India); indeed, salt has been central to the age-old debate about the rights of government to tax and control economies.
The story of salt encompasses fields as disparate as engineering, religion, and food, all of which Kurlansky richly explores. Few endeavors have inspired more ingenuity than salt making, from the natural gas furnaces of ancient China to the drilling techniques that led to the age of petroleum, and salt revenues have funded some of the greatest public works in history, including the Erie Canal, and even cities (Syrac

So Cred Convention
In Whistler in 1986 when they elected Bill Van der Zalm and sowed the seeds for the destruction of their party
Here's a story
It's a pretty safe bet that the video clips of a rather bemused looking Ted Nebbling staring at that wind-up phallus bouncing around on his desk in the Legislature a short time ago was featured by all the eastern TV stations on their 'lighter side of the news' segments. BC politics has always provided the eastern media with humorous material.
The legendary Ma Murray, publisher of the paper up in Lillooet for many years, appeared frequently on eastern news shows. Ma had a wicked sense of humour and was often interviewed by the likes of Barbara Frum when a bit on the politics of the absurd was required.
Ma Murray irreverently called past premier W.A.C. Bennett Wacky Bennett. His son, of course, she named Wacky Jr. She had a genius for explosing the ridiculous in provincial politics, although there are those who will argue that wasn't all that difficult.
Another ex-premier, perhaps the last real leader of the Social Credit party, William van der Zalm, provided journalists with many humourous anecdotes. The man lived in a theme park for crying out loud. The Zalmer was a leader who managed, much like Brian Mulrooney, to lead his party bravely into oblivion.
There's a definite Whistler association to the van der Zalm era- the gardener became leader of the party right in this valley. It could be argued that Whistler marked the beginning of the end for the Social Credit party.
It was back in the summer of 1986. Wacky Jr. decided to go out on the high tide that Expo 86 created. The political guru's that ran the Social Credit machine, and back then it was a very powerful machine, decided that the young resort town of Whistler would provide the perfect location for the coronation of their new ruler.
The convention center was the site of the final voting and the Whistler golf course driving range was where they chose to set up the circus that led to the voting. Bands, hot air balloons, and a myriad of other publicity stunts competed for the undecided delegates attention. Each of the candidates had hospitality tents pitched on the grass (they did close the driving range for the event) and the size of the tents acted as an indicator of the seriousness of the candidate, or at least as a guage of who was backed by money.
Grace McCarthy, for example, had a very big tent with lots of good food available. Delegates could even pan for gold in troughs salted with gold specs in front of her tent. The Zalmer's tent was equally impressive. Candidates like Cliff Michaels, with less money to play with, had rather more modest displays.
What became evident rather quickly to Whistlerites was that the convention offered interesting eating and drinking opportunities. Many of the would-be leaders didn't seem to mind wining and dining the locals in town and, not surprisingly, full advantage was taken.
Tapley's regulars could be found schmoozing with delegates over bar b q'd bison burgers. Citta patio dwellers migrated to the range to trade political views and and down beers with the movers and shakers of the Social Credit party. It made for some interesting exchanges.
A kind of poster war developed in the village. Rumour had it that local eateries were selling walls and pillars to candidates who would then paste their campaign posters onto them. A pillar in the right location was rumoured to be worth over a thousand dollars.
Posters sprung up all over the village. The weather vane above what was then Chez Joel's was apparently sold in layers - different candidates posters appeared at different levels until at last even the rooster was covered with political propaganda.
The action didn't stop when the sun went down either. Candidates took over local bars in the evening, offering hospitality nights. Let's just say the locals took full advantage.
Of course it couldn't last forever and after several days of enthusiastic electioneering the big vote was held at the convention center. Looking back at their choice now it might be tempting to say that the Social Credit delegates made a fatal mistake when they chose good old Bill as their leader but at the time almost everybody (with the exception perhaps of Grace McCarthy) wore great big grins as Bill and his headband-wearing wife smiled at their loyal subjects from the stage in the big meeting room. Balloons and cheers filled the convention center as the photogenic couple took their triumphal turn around the hall glad-handing their supporters. Little did they know...
Interestingly enough the Social Credit convention shared the valley with a Harley Davidson convention up at Base Two. That drew many Harley fans. For Harley fans, read bikers. Most of these dubious individuals were stopped on the highway and checked by the RCMP as they headed up Highway 99 into Whistler. Interestingly enough, most of
The Salt Caravans (Azalai)
In earlier times, salt was sought worldwide for its use as a food preservative. One of the most active trade routes for this valuable commodity was trans-Saharan, with an active trade of gold for salt across the Sahara Desert. The Europeans sought gold from Africa and the sub-Saharan Africans sought the salt from the Sahara Desert. This salt caravan, or azalai, was most active from the 12th to the late 16th century.
Taoudenni is a mine in the middle of the Sahara Desert (within the confines of Mali) that was a major source of salt. It is located 600 km (400 mi) north of Timbuktu and continues to be mined to this day. Although salt from Taoudenni is now mostly transported by truck, the traditional method of camel transportation does still take place. In the heyday of this trade, caravans were as large as 10,000 camels. The Tuareg still use these routes, traveling 1500 miles through the desert during the winter months.
The salt is extracted from the mines in the form of slabs and each camel will carry four or five slabs, weighing 30kg (66 lb) each. In Timbuktu, the salt is transported by boat down the Niger River to Mopti, the major salt trading city in West Africa. In Mopti, the salt slabs are broken into smaller pieces and are sold throughout West Africa.
This photograph is of a re-enactment of the salt caravans at the Festival au Desert, a joint Malian/Tuareg celebration of music and Tuareg tradition.

Powder River and the Mountain of Gold: A Radio Dramatization (The Colonial Radio Theatre on the Air)
Picking up where the Guns of Powder River left off, Britt and Doc are now in California and on their way to visit Britt’s father, retired U.S. Marshall Dan Mac Masters. But in the nearby mountains, two wily prospectors with gold fever get into trouble when the infamous outlaw Angel Garret and his gang of thieves attempt to steal the gold. Anna Beck Designs "Gili" Long Clover 18k Gold Plated Necklace, 40"
All Anna Beck pieces are carefully handcrafted on the Indonesian island of Bali by master artisans using ancient jewelry-making techniques. Each piece in the collection is made of individually cut 18K gold and sterling silver disks, which are layered and carefully affixed to a sterling silver base. Because of the handmade nature of our jewelry, no piece is exactly alike making it completely unique just like the woman who wears it.
Evoke the sandy beaches and casual elegance of the Gili Islands with the "Gili" Long Clover 18k Gold-Plated Necklace by Anna Beck Designs. This necklace showcases detailed ancient metalworking techniques from the Indonesian island of Bali, where this necklace is made. Many delicate 925 sterling silver clovers are patterned with 18k gold-plated disks, framed by a gold wire border. The clovers are elegantly attached to one another by gold cable chains. This necklace, hanging at 40 inches with a no-clasp design, layers easily with other silver- and gold-plated necklaces to make a sparkling statement with day or evening wear.

Armor Design Sketch
A sketch of armor designs from my manuscripts; modeling them are three main female characters from three separate manuscripts. Left to Right:
- Plate and chain mail in transitional style, with gothic influence. Decoration is in gold inlay, lacquer, and etchwork. Etching depicts symbols of (fantastical) historical heros, oak leaves, lillies, and sun rays.
- Chain mail and boiled leather. Steel poleyns, couters, vambraces and rerebrace. Roman influence. No decoration; fur is similar to wolf or bear hide; used to block enemy darts and blows.
- Baldric, disguised as a long sleeveless coat/jerkin, over chain mail. Steel greaves etched with sphere and spreading tree symbols. Classical Greek, mid 1700 English, and Medieval influence.
Please do not steal/copy/export in anyway without my permission. I work hard on what I do, and I don't think you'd appreciate someone taking what you worked hard on, now would you?
SNK04B SHELL BASKET
I designed and made this totally handcrafted, original, one of a kind gorgeous, woman’s necklace. It has a 21.5 inch chain made of Czech glass beads, pink freshwater pearls, and seed beads. I designed and made the pendant by hand of seed beads, sewn one at a time by me; complimented with pink freshwater pearls, and Czech glass shells. The pendant measures 7.5 inches. It reminds me of the baskets of shells. It is finished with a 14kt gold-filled, handmade by me, easy to use clasp. Bead work is durable as evidenced by pieces in antique stores and museums. Keep it clean in a box or plastic zip lock bag. With care it can last a long time. I am hopeful you will feel elegant and free-spirited as you wear my creation.

the horse tamers
Dedicated in 1899,The Horse Tamers, by Frederick MacMonnies (1863-1937), flank the Park Circle Entrance of Brooklyn's Prospect Park. Horse Tamers is an allegory of the Triumph of Mind over Brute Strength. The sculptures depict nude young men riding bareback on rearing, unbridled horses. To achieve their great dynamic energy, MacMonnies sculpted the horses after live Andalusian models.

The Fox and the Little Prince
it was then that the fox appeared.
"good morning" said the fox.
"good morning"
the little prince responded politely
altho when he turned around he saw nothing.
"I am right here" the voice said, "under the apple
tree."
"who are you?" asked the little prince, and added,
"You are very pretty to look at."
"I am a fox", the fox said.
"Come and play with me,"
proposed the little prince, "I am so unhappy."
"I cannot play with you," the fox said,
"I am not tamed."
"AH please excuse me,"said the little prince.
But after some thought, he added:
"what does that mean---'tame'?"
"you do not live here," said the fox,
"what is it you are looking for?"
"I am looking for men," said the little prince.
"What does that mean---tame?"
"Men,"said the fox,
"they have guns, and they hunt.
It is very disturbing.
They also raise chickens.
These are their only interests.
Are you looking for chickens?"
"No," said the little prince.
"I am looking for friends.
What does that mean---tame?"
"It is an act too often neglected,"
said the fox.
"It means to establish ties."
"To establish ties?"
"Just that," said the fox.
"to me, you are still nothing more than
a little boy who is just like
a hundred thousand other little boys.
And I have no need of you.
And you, on your part, have no need of me.
To you I am nothing more
than a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes.
But if you tame me, then we shall need each other.
To me, you will be unique in all the world.
To you, I shall be unique in all the world. . ."
"I am beginning to understand,"
said the little prince.
"There is a flower. . .I think she has tamed me. . ."
"It is possible," said the fox.
"On earth one sees all sorts of things."
"Oh but this is not on the earth!"
said the little prince.
The fox seemed perplexed, and very curious.
"On another planet?"
"Yes"
"Are there hunters on that planet?"
"No"
"Ah that's interesting! Are there chickens?"
"No"
"Nothing is perfect," sighed the fox.
But he came back to his idea.
"My life is very monotonous," he said.
"I hunt chickens; men hunt me.
All chickens are just alike,
and all the men are just alike.
And in consequence, I am a little bored.
But if you tame me,
it will be as if the sun came to shine on my life.
I shall know the sound of a step that will be
different from all the others.
Other steps send me hurrying back
underneath the ground.
Yours will call me, like music out of my burrow.
And then look:
you see the grain-fields down yonder?
I do not eat bread.
Wheat is of no use to me.
The wheat fields have nothing to say to me.
And that is sad.
But you have hair that is the color of gold.
Think how wonderful that will be
when you have tamed me!
The grain, which is also golden,
will bring me back the thought of you.
And I shall love to listen
to the wind in the wheat. . ."
The fox gazed at the little prince,
for a long time.
"Please---tame me!" he said.
"I want to, very much," the little prince replied.
"But I have not much time.
I have friends to discover,
and a great many things to understand."
"One only understands the things that one tames,"
said the fox.
" Men have no more time to understand anything.
They buy things all ready made at the shops.
But there is no shop anywhere
where one can buy friendship,
and so men have no friends any more.
If you want a friend, tame me. . ."
"What must I do, to tame you?
asked the little prince.
"You must be very patient," replied the fox.
First you will sit down
at a little distance from me
-like that-in the grass.
I shall look at you out of the corner of my eye,
and you will say nothing.
Words are the source of misunderstandings.
But you will sit a little closer to me,
every day..."
The next day the little prince came back.
"It would have been better to come back
at the same hour," said the fox.
"If for example, you came at four o'clock
in the afternoon,
then at three o'clock I shall begin to be happy.
I shall feel happier and happier
as the hour advances.
At four o'clock,
I shall be

It was 11 years ago that we got married for one reason: to qualify for family graduate student housing at Berkeley.
We were relatively young. Not quite young enough that our fathers were sitting on the porch, shotguns in laps, while we announced the imminent birth of our illegitimate child. But still pretty young.
We had no interest in being married. We had lived together for two years before we got married and we were fine with that. No reason for any government-backed declaration of our commitment to each other. We were that kind of young. Fists-to-The-System kind of young.
Then she decided she was going to go to Berkeley for graduate school. We had no money and I was an English major, for Christ's sake, so I had no prospects, um, anywhere. But we got word -- hey, pssst! Married student housing. It rocks. You get a sweet place in Berkeley for cheap cheap cheap!
So, we drove to Jeweler's Row and picked up our two symbolic rings nearly at cost -- they were simply plopped on a scale and their value was determined by the current value of gold. It was a kick. It really drove home how silly a decision this was.
We had just graduated. We decided to take a little driving vacation and get married. We heard you could just show up and get married in Massachusetts. "Let's go there! Hey, let's get married on the 10th -- it will be easy to remember. I don't know why, it just will!"
We drove up to Rockport, popped in to the Town Clerk's office and then they hit us with the waiting period. It was going to be something like three-to-four days (I forget exactly) before we could actually get married after we filled out the paperwork. I don't even remember why. For nearly ten years we were confused about the date of our anniversary as a consequence.
So, we killed some time, drove around a little bit, and came back to Rockport on the 14th. We were given a suggestion of where to get married and scheduled the appointment with the Town Clerk. There was a torrential summer thunderstorm that ended just minutes before we were to get married outside on a bluff overlooking Bearskin Neck Cove. Because the rain had driven everyone else inside, the only other people to witness it were two kayakers down in the cove, and we only noticed them when we heard quiet clapping after the approximately two-minute long "ceremony".
I think it was $50 to perform the ceremony and he kicked back $20 when it was done so we could go have drinks.
The best part of the story? Oh, yeah, she decided not to go to Berkeley after all.
That was 11 years ago today.
And I'm still waiting to see Berkeley.

Neverwinter Nights isn't simply another computer game. It's a Dungeons & Dragons computer game, as well as all the tools you'll need to create your own Dungeons & Dragons adventures. Neverwinter Nights is an achievement. It accomplishes what computer role-playing games set out to do when Wizardry debuted in the late '70s: re-create the social, hands-on experience of tabletop gaming. Neverwinter Nights uses the Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition rules in (nearly) all their complex glory. It's the first game to attempt to fully support D&D 3E's customizable features, and more significantly, it's the first game designed to re-create the experience of playing tabletop D&D. You can play BioWare's extensive campaign alone or online with your friends, or you can use the included Aurora toolset to build your own adventure module and run it for your buddies with all the control you'd have if you were running a tabletop game. The powerful Dungeon Master client lets you put words in nonplayer characters' mouths, control monsters, alter the game world, and customize your adventure on the fly. If playing is your thing, you can join other people's games and play through encounters with other gamers around the world. Everything works as it should and the game is beautiful to behold. BioWare has used a limited 3-D engine to allow you to spin your viewpoint around your character and zoom in on the action. During combat, Mages unleash spectacular spells, Priests raise their symbols to drive undead hordes back, and Rogues tinker with locked chests, while Fighters dodge, parry, and strike ferociously at any attacking beasts. The sound is topnotch, with BioWare's typically high-quality voice acting and music from composer Jeremy Soule. But all isn't perfect. The game makes a great effort of implementing the full D&D 3rd Edition rules, but doesn't quite succeed. In NWN, Paladins lose their Detect Evil and Mount abilities. Druids can shape change into animals, but can't change back to human form at will. Darkvision has no noticeable in-game effect. Troublesome issues for hard-core D&D fans, but it's understandable that some changes would have to be made in order to shoehorn a freeform tabletop RPG into a computer program. Other issues are not so easy to understand: the camera controls are simple and will not allow the user to lower to decrease the camera angle--you'll never get anything approaching a character's-eye view of the world. Moving to a new section within a building or going from an indoor to an outdoor area takes you out of the game and presents you with a (mercifully short) "Loading" screen. There is an artificial limitation on how many henchmen you can hire in the single-player game: you're limited to one hireling, and Baldur's Gate fans will miss the squabbling party from earlier games. More significant are the problems that arise from trying to re-create a social experience like D&D in a computer game. Multiplayer games with strangers are confusing and not as fun as they sound and, like the tabletop game, they're really only as fun as the players and especially the DM you're playing with. Multiplayer NWN is only worthwhile if you have a dedicated group and a DM that knows what he or she is doing. The last drawback is the documentation. The manual is large and detailed but it omits key help in module creation; you have to buy a separate strategy guide if you want that information. But though slightly flawed, NWN has indisputably won the holy grail of RPG gaming: getting the Dungeons & Dragons experience into a personal computer. The included campaign is fascinating and the tools are powerful enough to ensure a steady stream of module content from devoted fans. Make no mistake, Neverwinter Nights is an achievement and will likely change the way CRPGs are played from now on. It's a game no RPG fan, no D&D fan, should miss. --Bob Andrews Pros: Almost perfect implementation of D&D 3E rules Deep single-player game Intriguing multiplayer game Powerful module creation tools Cons: Not quite perfect implementation of D&D 3E rules "Loading" screens Inflexible 3-D camera Only one henchman Multiplayer is dependant on quality players and DM

$250 fine in 1911 - USGS
$250 was a hefty fine back in 1911 (when William Taft was president and the Philadelphia A's defeated the New York Giants in the World Series). This U.S. Geological Survery marker (benchmark) can be found along the trail on a large isolated boulder at the edge of Kookooskia Meadows.
From the trailhead we hiked down to a moose pond (about one mile) and then turned on to the trail to Friday Pass where we hoped to hike and then on to the Grave Peak fire lookout.
A missing trail sign (stolen or vandalized), caused us to take a hike to the top then along Friday Ridge (south of our intended destination) instead Still beautiful country, wonderful hike, and a reason to go back.
This is one of many photos taken on a three day trip to the Lochsa River country of Idaho (7.30.10 through 8.1.19). What follows is the story behind this trip, if you are interested:
THE STORY:
July 30th through August 1st, 2010, I took a three day trip to the Lochsa River country in Northern Idaho. Crooked Fork Creek and Colt Killed Creek join to form the Lochsa River; The Lochsa River and Selway River join at Lowell, Idaho to form the Clearwater River; the Clearwater River joins the Snake River at Clarkston, Washington and Lewiston Idaho. The Snake River then flows west until it meets the Columbia River.
The Lochsa River drainage is rugged, scenic and rich in history.
I have traveled Lolo Pass (highway 12), which travels along the Lochsa River for over 30 years but rarely having had the time to slow down and explore the area, to hike it, drive “back road” routes and really enjoy all that it has to offer.
I saw a photo of a 1924 fire lookout on top of Grave Peak, Idaho on flickr several years ago and decided then that I wanted to hike there. Later I learned that the top of Grave Peak was where a young Norman Maclean (author of a River Runs Through It), served as a fire lookout as a 17 year old, back in 1919. He wrote a semi-auto biographical story about his adventures at nearby Elk Summit and his assignment as “fire lookout”on Grave Peak [USFS 1919: The Ranger, the Cook, and a Hole in the Sky",] I had read that story years ago.
A friend later loaned a book to me titled: The Lochsa Story by Bud Moore. In that book the story is told of “Isaac’s Gold” and a prospector named Jerry Johnson. Some hot springs in the area, which my wife and I hiked to this year, were named after that Jerry Johnson. Like the Lost Dutchman mine, the story goes that an Indian, named Isaac, knew where gold nuggets could be found among the Bitterroot Mountains. While leading Jerry Johnson and his partner to the gold, Isaac dies. Isaac’s gold source has never been found (of course), which keeps the legend alive. Grave Peak may have been named after the Indian Isaac, who died on it or near it.
Grave Peak resides south of the Lochsa River among the Bitterroot Mountains. To the north of the Lochsa River was the setting for another great story - - the Lolo Trail.
Lewis and Clark learned from the Shoshone Indians that the Salmon River canyon was too rugged to travel and that the Lochsa River canyon with its extremely steep canyon walls that pinched together at the river was not a good route west. So with the aide of a Shoshone guide “Toby”, the Lewis and Clark party traveled by horseback along the high spine ridge above the north side of the Lochsa River in 1805. They returned following most of the same route in 1806.
Lolo Trail as the route is now known was used for centuries by Native Americans, such as the Nez Perce, to travel back and forth to bison country both before and after the acquisition of horses. Lewis and Clark met the Nez Perce on the west end of the Lolo Trail and were given food by that tribe. That food included something new on their menu, the roasted camas root bulbs. Nutritious but of acquired taste, many of the Lewis and Clark party became ill from eating too much camas bulb.
Lewis and Clark suffered from lack of food along their nine day passage of the Lolo Trail route on their way west. They ate at least one or more of the colts that they had with them as they were unable to find and kill any big game in the area. They were able to kill a few grouse (they called them pheasant in their journals) and jays, but nothing large enough to sustain the group. Colt Killed Creek, one of two streams forming the Lochsa River was named by Lewis and Clark from one of the areas they resorted to killing one of their young horses, for meat.
NOTE: A young horse is called a “foal”. A female young horse is a “filly” and a male young horse is called a “colt”. Some folks incorrectly use the term “colt” to describe a young horse of either sex.
In the 1930s the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corp), widened, improved, and in some places relocated the Lolo Trail route. It became known as the Lolo “motorway”. I decided to drive and camp along the eastern most portion of this route to “feel the history”. The Native Americans, had created and used this route (Chief
