Story of the Claddagh Ring (Celtic Ireland)

"Let love and friendship reign!" is the motto of the famous Irish Claddagh ring. This lovely token of fealty - a ring in gold or silver comprising two hands surrounding a heart and surmounted by a crown - takes its name from the Claddagh, an ancient fishing village that is now part of Galway city.

The earliest surviving examples are from about 1700 but it is known that the rings were popular much earlier than this. Tradition has it that in the Claddagh these rings were handed down from mother to daughter.

Now the Claddagh ring is a sought-after piece of jewelery and a symbol of romance the world over.




About the Author

Sean McMahon was born in Derry in 1931 and he educated at St Derrys Columbs College and in Queen's University in Belfast. He returned to Derry to teach in St Columbs and taught Mathematics until his retirement in 1988.

During his teaching years he staged many productions of works by Shakespeare and modern dramatists both for St Columbs and for amateur theater groups in Derry. He also wrote the lyrics for musical shows.

His literary career properly began with his anthology The Best from the Bell, which was followed by A Book of Irish Quotations and Rich and Rare, an anthology of prose and verse. Over the past twenty years he has written and edited dozens of books, including biographies of Ulster writers Sam Hanna Bell and Robert Lynd, the bestselling A Short History of Ireland and books on all aspects of Irish life and culture, including A Short History of Ulster, The Island of Saints and Scholars and Irish Names for Children.

His next book will be a Derry anthology.

These are commitment rings that I made for some friends of mine. They are made from sterling silver, 14k gold, and diamonds.

The bands are made from rectangular stock that I carved a groove into. The diamonds are tube-set and the gold wire shaped by hand and soldered into place piece by piece. One requirement for these rings was that the diamonds not be too prominent. I think this design accomplishes that well, with the diamonds incorporated into the design without overwhelming it.

The gold and diamonds in this ring are reclaimed from a ring formerly worn by one friend's father. This actually added a lot of work to the project (and I detail that in the other photo of these rings) but made the rings much more symbolic than they would have been otherwise, which is saying a lot considering the purpose of these rings.

To me its all about compromise, Commitment binds a marriage,But really its compromise that makes it work.

Worked on a few ideas iv'e had bouncing around in my head for a while yesterday, funnily enough this wasn't one of them. It is however a template for a future shoot.

I’m not a McDonald’s fan, but I’ve always liked their low cost good coffee.
Why am I talking about Starbucks? Because their over priced product is out reach for someone in debt.

The problem with having eyes is that you can see all of the commercials flashing before you telling you buy, buy, buy.

Here are my suggestions, this is primarily going out to someone that wrote me this morning with the subject marked urgent.

Dear Urgent,
I felt the panic in your letter, and I thank you for trusting me with your personal information. But after reviewing your letter I thought about all of the people that could be helped by reading my story. So my reply is made public to reach out to everyone that can and will possibly benefit from my failure.

My personal story started 30 years ago with me in college and living off of my one and only credit card. My parents had given me the card for emergencies only, while out of state.

I was born and raised in Denver, Co.

Anyway, I was young and I didn't know how to manage money, like most kids.

That is why students can get sucked into the credit card debt across the globe.

I don’t really remember how I got behind in my living expenses’ but I was using the card for everything gas, clothes, food, books, rent...

Until one day my mom called me and said that the card was over the limit… to my surprise... I didn’t even know it had a limit. :)

She told me she had closed the account and she ordered me to cut up the card immediately.

And she said "if you can't afford to live out of state, pack your car and bring your a** home."

I needed to figure out what I was going to do. Fast. I really enjoyed living far away from my parent’s strict rules and regulations, and I wanted to prove to myself that I could make it on my own.

So I finished school living on smoothies, cereal, bread and water, literally!

I had a job as a waitress, making just enough to pay my bills, with very little left over.

I was living in a one room compartment; I wouldn’t call it an apartment because you could sit on the bed and cook dinner on the hot plate. Nope it didn't come with a kitchen.

But because I was determined to make it, I stuck it out.

I started working my new job as a surgical tech, with hours from 3:00 am to 12:00 pm.

Now, I was looking for a new job. I just couldn't keep getting up at 1:30am to go to work.

I would read my neighbors’ paper every morning then put it back in front of their door.

Finally a breakthrough, there were lots of jobs for Flight Attendants. My though was what an awful job… but the pay wasn’t bad and I could see the world. I love adventure. So I applied...

And the rest is history. I have been with the same company for 29 years and I love my job. I have been a Purser for the last 6 years. This means my primary destination is out of the USA. When I leave for work, I'm going to Aisa or Europe.

however that doesn’t mean it can’t come crashing down any day.

I am a realist. Nothing is a sure thing except death and taxes.

I believe in continued education in something you enjoy.

If you can’t afford to go to college turn a hobby into a business.

Be creative. But here is how you can start on the road to clearing up debt one bill at a time. But you must make some important changes, right away.

1)Cut up all credit cards, use a debit card.

2)Remember that we only wear 20% of the clothes in our closet, no new clothes.

3)All extravagant spending has to stop; spa or club memberships must be cancelled.

4)Dining takes place in the home with your family, no restaurants.

5)This is a good time to diet also, no high priced packaged foods; vegetables are about the cheapest thing in the supermarket.

6)No high priced sodas, liquor beer or wine, yep water with some lemon, tea or coffee. A big can of Folgers is about $8.00 and that’s about 30-40 cups of coffee.

8)For exercise take your camera out to the local park and walk the park looking for things to photograph, the more you shoot the better you’ll get.

9)My photography teacher in High School would give us an assignment every Friday, He would write on the board 10 different place that we had to take a photo.

my migraine has not gone away. i woke up in utter pain, partially in surprise that it hadn't gotten any better in the least. i've been swallowing ibuprofen like candy (no more than 6 a day you say? HA), and nothing's happening. even now as i'm typing at 22:00, my head still hurts.

i didn't go to work again today, but i know if i call in again tomorrow i'll just get in trouble. they are only compassionate until they start to wonder if you're faking, and then there's no way to convince them unless they're in your home watching you curled up in fetal position because it's the least painful way to lie.

i think i was supposed to return my rental car today. i'm not sure. i guess i'll find out when i return it tomorrow if i walk away a little broker than before.

i also finally got a quote in a 2010 mazda, and in digging around the interwebs have discovered the MSRP isn't much above the invoice price. how am i supposed to haggle with such tight restrictions?

I should really put in here a really technical description of how this was taken, and wow everyone with my technical finesse... but.... i can't lie! So, This dandelion was held on a ring binder with a bulldog clip and spotlit with a hand held torch rested on the folder. The camera was stabilised on a box and i used apperture priority mode at f10 and self timer, whilst using some a4 paper to try to reflect some of the torch light across the flower! (Possibly not quite the expensive equipment and set up they would recommend in Digital photography magazines?)

Two children’s club enamel badges from the early 1930s. Both have pin clasps on the back.

The badge on the left was issued by the Bradford Telegraph & Argus which was one of many local newspapers that sponsored the club. The badge is made from die-stamped brass with blue enamel. It measures 20mm diameter with the maker’s name (Vaughtons Ltd, B’ham) on the reverse.

The other badge was issued by the Northern Echo of Darlington who founded the NigNog Children’s Ring in 1929. This badge is made from die-stamped brass with nickel plating and blue enamel. It measures 21mm diameter with the maker’s name (Collins B’ham) on the reverse.

The NigNog Children’s Ring was one of the most popular newspaper-based children’s clubs in England. Founded by the Northern Echo of Darlington, County Durham on the 21st October 1929 it ran until the 1960’s, with a lull during the Second World War. The club was hugely successful and had over 50,000 new members in it’s first three months.

Boys and girls equally enjoyed the benefits of membership, to join they needed to collect so many consecutive coupons from their local newspaper and send it off with a 6d fee (sixpence), usually in postage stamps (6d could easily be one or two week’s pocket-money for those privileged enough to receive it!). In return they got a membership pack that included their personalised member’s card, member’s number and the much coveted NigNog enamel badge. Special introductory offers included competitions for high valued prizes but these sometimes required 100 consecutive newspaper coupons, not an easy task to fulfil.

Other benefits of membership included competitions, birthday announcements in both the relevant newspapers and sponsored children’s radio shows, a small birthday present such as a cake, free trips and outings. It was also satisfying to know other children who were like-minded members and feel that sense of belonging to a special and intimate group. There were the weekly newspaper’s Nig & Nog page to look forward to with cartoon strips, stories, club news, announcements and competitions. The Nig & Nog club often featured in Uncle Mac’s BBC Children’s Hour Saturday radio shows, a not-to-be-missed schedule for children in those pre-television days. The Nig & Nog club had it’s own annual NigNog Revue at the Bradford Alhambra, at which it is said that Ernest Wiseman first came to fame. Ernest later became better known as Ernie Wise, of the Morcambe & Wise fame.

On the sporting side, there were NigNog junior soccer leagues, NigNog cycling clubs and numerous NigNog swimming clubs. All were instrumental in promoting a healthier lifestyle among children, especially for those from the polluted grimy towns and cities. Club members could win special awards and prize medals at their sporting events.

The NigNog Children’s Ring like other contemporary children’s clubs were primarily charitable organisations who raised funds, mostly for children’s hospital wards but also for orphanages and animal welfare organisations. Club’s rules were few but clearly stated on the membership card;

“As a Nignog in Uncle Mac’s Children’s Ring. I have promised that I will always try to help –
·The children’s hospitals,
·Other children,
·Friendless children,
·Dumb animals,
·And will find new Nignogs.”


Children’s clubs were sponsored by local and national newspapers and supported by children’s radio programmes. The NigNog Children’s Ring was phenomenally popular and supported by many local newspapers that included The Northern Echo (County Durham), The Bradford Telegraph & Argus (Yorkshire), Birmingham Evening Despatch, Yorkshire Observer, amongst others. Some of these newspapers issued their own Nig & Nog badges and were fronted by the club’s two figureheads, namely ‘Uncle Mac’ (Derek McCullough) and ‘Uncle Ernest’ (Ernest Noble, artist and comic illustrator). It seemed to be the convention that children’s club figureheads were bestowed with the honourary title of ‘Uncle’ or ‘Aunty’.

The comic strips by ‘Uncle Mac’ and ‘Uncle Ernest’ centred around the ‘hullo’ imp twins called Nig and Nog who supposedly lived on the moon and had many adventures. They could also be quite mischievous and often badgered the ‘man in the moon’ to keep him awake! The characters of Nig and Nog always featured on the club’s badges and their printed material. Incidentally, the words ‘nig’ and ‘nog’ were County Durham vernacular for ‘boy’ and ‘girl’. Back in those days the term had no derogatory or racist meaning, that came about some decades later.

I'm SO SO SO SO EXCITEDDD!!!!!!
Mackenzie calls me yesterday, asking "You don't happen to have any plans Friday night, do you?" And I was was like, "No...why?" And she says, "Well, I'm going to a concert. And they were $40 tickets, and me and Taylor were planning on going, but she got grounded. So, would you like to go?" And I asked, "What concert?" And she says, "Panc At The Disco, Plain White T's..." I was like, "AHHHHHHHH!!!!!" So, I thought I wouldn't be able to go, because her parents aren't coming. BUT MY PARENTS SAID YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! So, tomorrow I'm going to Kenzie's house, and we're going to Denver, going to the concert, and staying at a hotel for the night. FFTANNG!!!!!!! Oh my goodness gracious I'm freakin stoked.

^.^ I used to wear most of these rings all the time. I used to wear a ring on every finger, every single day. That huge pink one, Sam and Abby have one like it too. =D We're pretty much gangsters. But yes, I'm in a very good mood. =D!!!

I was hoping the rings would be in focus more...but my camera was being stupid and I don't have the time. =D Today, we are going shopping. UPDATE: Went shopping. We got a gallon of paint, chalk paint, a bedspread, sheets, 3 things of hangars, about 20 picture frames, 3 things of black spray paint, and a mountain dew for one hundred and fifteen dollars and 34 cents. Pretty good. I got my paint for 6 dollars. The majority was spent on my bedspread. But hey, That's okay. I'm really excited for my new room. I want my walls to look like Red Robin, with all my photos. Pretty much friggin STOKED!
I spray painted all the frames, and accidentally colored my hand. woodeefriggindoo. =P I think perhaps I will put on my gomies and watch some Phantom of the Opera. Join me if you wish. =P
(Okay...you're prolly wondering "GOMIES?!?" yeah, my Ma and Oma and so on and so forth have always called pajamas gomies. It kinda stuck. =])

As several of you are aware, I have had a bit of a rough time over the last 6 weeks or so. Everything from being made redundant, being in hospital, mums accident, concussion, lurgy, shingles, mouse drama. Thats on top of the bushfires in Vic in Feb where a part of the family pretty much lost everything at Kingslake...oh and I cant forget the insanely painful and rare inversed foot and ankle dislocation.

Now when I think the universe can't possibly shit on my anymore it goes to new heights. I found out late this afternoon that my uncle passed away suddenly on Wed under pretty bloody awful circumstances quite frankly.

The funeral has to be put off several weeks until autopsies etc are done. Sudden death is hard enough, but to have it prolonged under these types of circumstances is just fucking awful.

Anyway, the point of the pic is, this afternoon after lunch I bought this ring. I found it at a jewellers shop in Cott. Have been in quite a mood all week - quite "twitter and bisted" so to speak re work.

I thought buying a ring (and a few more - lost a lot of them in last 2 years) would cheer me up.

............it did for about 20 minutes before I got the phone call.....

1. I have extremely strange eating habits. I never know what I'm hungry for, so if I'm lured into a grocery store I usually just wander around for 30 minutes and emerge with a bag of chips and a soda. I spend close to $300 a month eating out, if not more. Outside grilled cheese, steak, edamame, and scrambled eggs, I have NO idea how to cook. The lack of passion I have for eating food has left me slender, despite my lack of passion for regular exercise.

2. I am an English Literature major. I always thought I would have a book finished by now, but it always got farther from me until one day the idea disappeared altogether. Although I have no plans of using the degree to its potential, I feel that it has shaped me into a vastly intelligent, poetic, and intellectual person, and for that I am grateful.

3. I despise working, but I'm pretty materialistic so it benefits me, of course. Even if I have a great job that isn't difficult and doesn't stress me in the slightest (like I do now) I would still be happy to walk out the door and never come back. It's this funny thing, I'm compelled to LIVE, not sit behind a desk or ring up a number.

4. I'm deeply creative, which has probably inspired fact #3 a great deal. I live for imagination, art, beauty, poetry, scenery, memories, details…

5. I'm a clean freak and I love to organize. I hate when I allow myself to ignore the condition of my house from time to time. I can literally spend hours cleaning the hell out of it, to the point where I actually find myself cleaning the cleaning products I'm using. Shit.

6. When I was young I never cried about anything, literally. I can recall a couple times when I was angry, a few when I got hurt. However, as I have aged I find myself crying more and more, often about things that get more and more difficult to identify.

7. I am native to Arizona and have lived here my entire life. I'm in the mood to own a house, however, I'm putting that off so that I can live outside of Arizona for a while and see how it feels. I would like to spend some time in Seattle and California, and possibly overseas before I have any permanence in my life.

8. I'm in love with horses. Everything about them makes me happy. I'll always be a cowgirl. Our "family business" in Arizona has been horse racing, my grandfather has been training thoroughbreds and quarter horses since he was a teenager. I've grown up with a great respect for that kind of happiness. When I was 20 I bought first horse, a BLM Mustang who I trained myself with the help of my experience with horses, books, and cowboys. Selling her was,…shit.

9. I'm very romantic, very passionate, and very sexual. Ahem…I suppose my ability to love someone unconditionally is one of my best qualities and my worst. I require a great deal of attention from my lovers who often become my best friends.

10. I will steal a powerade from the store before I EVER drink a glass of water. I HATE hate hate hate water. I'd say in the last 10 years I've consumed about 8oz's of water. Super healthy right? ^____^

Susan and I got marriede April 19th 2008. These area our custom-made wedding rings.
Two kinds and colours of gold. A redish and a yellowish gold alloy.
The outer rings with the key-like teeth were cut from one piece, symbolising that Susan and I complement eachother well - like two pieces in a jig-saw puzzle.

This is a great full color opal this stone as a cabochon would have a $250 + value . Carved into a skull I would figure upwards of $450 unset as you will never see one of these anywhere else . It is just not done with quality opal .

Picking it up as hears someone yapping on the other end murmurs," the bitch is busy.." before hanging up. Smirking she hops back over to Ston like an excited kid to start pushing buttons on the PDA
