We have just come back from another trip up to the Gold Coast, the holiday strip of land on the very southern coast of Queensland and extending into the very northern coastal region of NSW. We went down to Tweed Heads from our accomodation at Broadbeach for a crabbing expedition in the mangrove swamp inlet region, that joins onto the Tweed River. A great day was had, accompanied by many different forms of birdlife - including lots of pelicans. This is the first of some great pelican shots I got on that trip. Stay posted - more will come soon! On a walk a little later into a nearby park, we discovered it was fruit bats. There were hundreds hanging in the trees, with a few flying - I was able to capture this one in mid flight - also got a few of just sky! Annika's daddy James is a nurse in the US Armed Forces stationed in Iraq, and Shalom hangs the Blue Star Flag in the window for him. James last saw Annika when she was 3 weeks old, she is 5 months now. Each day at noon Shalom takes a photo of Annika with a card, describing what they are doing that day, and then e-mails it to James, so he can follow her progress as she grows up. He won't see her again until October. About the Blue Star Flag: The tradition originated with WWI. In 1917, the Congressional Record stated: "The world should know of those who give so much for liberty. The dearest thing in all the world to a father and mother---their children." Also known as a Service Flag, the blue stands for hope and pride. When family members were killed, the blue star was replaced with a gold one representing sacrifice. A silver star stood for someone invalided home for wounds sustained overseas. Lapel pins also sported the same symbols. Tonight Lynne Sachs will discuss the way that “France/tour…” influenced her own work as she reflects on the presence of childhood in her twenty-year film career. Beginning in her early twenties when the ambiguity of femininity seemed daunting and problematic to more recent years when motherhood has given her quick access to the conundrums of youth, Sachs, like Godard and Melville, ponders her relationship as an artist to this unavoidable eighteen year odyssey. Shortly thereafter, the U.S. Army Graves Registration Service hired Lenard to reconstruct the bones — small and large — of dead American soldiers. Eventually he found himself in remotest Brazil where he embarked on the translation of “Winnie the Pooh” into Latin, an eccentric task that catapulted him to brief world-wide fame. Here she played a small role next to Zarah Leander in the operetta Axel an der Himmelstur (Axel at Heaven’s Gate) with music by Ralph Benatzky and lyrics by Paul Morgan and Hans Weigel. In 1937 she joined the Munchner Kammerspiele, and in 1942 the Staatstheater Berlin (State Theater in Berlin). She was discovered for the film by mountaineer filmmaker Luis Trenker. He asked her for Der Berg ruft!/The Mountain Calls (1938, Luis Trenker), in which she became the leading lady. She signed a contract with Tobis Films, and appeared in Ein ganzer Kerl/A Regular Fellow (1939, Fritz Peter Buch) opposite Albert Matterstock. Her title role in Die Geierwally/Wally of the Vultures (1940, Hans Steinhoff) became the greatest success of her career. Till the end of the war she appeared in such well-known films as Der grosse Schatten/The Big Shadow (1942, Paul Verhoeven) and Die Jahre vergehen/The Years pass (1944, Gunther Rittau), but she also acted in the Nazi propaganda film Ich klage an/I Accuse (1941, Wolfgang Liebeneiner). This film was intended as a preparation and secret promotion for Hitler's euthanasia program. In 1945, the Allied forces forbade Heidemarie Hatheyer to play in films, because of her work on Ich klage an. They allowed her to continue working at the theatre, and she played on stage in Germany, Switzerland and Vienna. After the ban was lifted in 1949, she could continue her film career successfully. In 1990 Heidemarie Hatheyer died in Scheuren bei Forch, Switzerland, aged 72. Heidemarie Hatheyer was first married to director Willfried Feldhutter and from 1952 on she was married with the author Curt Riess. Aragon Stacked Rings This is the first piece of a new collection I am fabricating. I'm really trying to expand on my use of texture and color. I love the texture on the silver. It really lightens up the metal and adds additional contrast to the gold. This set includes 5 individual bands. The middle band features a solid 18K gold band enhanced with 22K gold cobblestone. A 9 millimeter honey of a garent sits on top bezel set in 22K gold bezel wire. The two silver bands are textured and the outside bands are solid 18K gold with a light hammered finish. The set turned out really well and I am quite happy with it. This is my first set using solid gold pieces so I think it turned out really well. Hey I Love You Ring I Love You. Three little worlds that sometimes are harder to say the *other* three little words; 'I am sorry"...;b Listening to Michael Franti singing 'Say Hey I Love you' inspired me to this ring full of beauty and strength. The ring measures 5 1/2 and fits like a size 5 due to its with, 5/8"-6/8"..Has 22K gold inlays on the wing...and a 24K gold plated feather; you can read I *Heart* YOU easily because I oxidized the ring. And *A Secret* I planted a teeny silver nugget inside, the seed of love...you can not even feel it and it is visible it you went to look for it. The ring is solid almost 10g of eco friendly fine silver.
