American-Walnut-Burr WALNUT, AMERICAN Also known as: (1) Black Walnut, (2) Californian Walnut (burr) Botanical Name: Juglans nigra Origin: (1) Eastern USA, (2) Western USA Description: This readily available and attractive veneer is generally a warm looking light to fairly dark yellowy brown to purplish brown colour. The logs are mostly straight-grained, sometimes wavy and are usually flat cut. This produces a good proportion of crown material which is popular for furniture and good quality interior joinery. In recent years there has been an increase in demand for straight grain veneer and good “halves” from these crown logs are now sought after to produce a more linear look. Logs may occasionally be mottled or even display stronger types of figure. The decorative burr veneer is mostly produced from trees grown in California and Oregon where they are orchard cultivated for their nut crops. These trees are usually grafted onto the rootstock of a different Walnut variety and the burr growth develops as a direct result of this graft. The veneer quality varies greatly from log to log and may be close or sparsely burred or even simply wild grained and butty. All types, however, have their uses for furniture and high quality interior decoration and a considerable quantity is consumed by the motor car and yacht building markets for dashboards and trims. Less common but occasionally produced, curl or crotch veneer can be very pretty and is useful for special cabinet work. Photography Art Directing Art directed in: Summer 2009 • Given the corresponding materials, I was asked by American Patchwork & Quilting, a publication of Meredith Corporation, to art direct a photo shoot for this "Blossoms in the Breeze" quilt. Willow Tree is an intimate, personal line of angels, figurines, ornaments and keepsake boxes representing qualities and sentiments that make us feel close to others, heal wounds, or treasure relationships to living things. The name Willow Tree symbolizes that which is gestural, beckoning and romantic. The figures are columnar in design, like a tree, and often carry flora or fauna symbolic of human virtues or qualities. The angels are rendered so as to reveal their expressions through body gestures only a tilt of the head, placement of the hands, a turn of the body. The absence of facial features contributes to the quiet and modest design. Emotions and feelings are left to the viewer to discern, which makes them very personal and powerful. Susan Lordi's inspiration comes from a love of family, closeness to friends, and an appreciation of nature. Her art is intimate and personal, reflecting that which helps us treasure our relationship to people and the world around us. (10) Bruce McCorquodale set This is a mystery photo. It is the small size, called a carte-de-visite of the type started before Confederation [1867] and extending to the 1880’s and sometimes beyond.. If it was taken in the 1870’s the ladies would be born in the 1850’s. It has a photographer’s stamp on the back which I can’t read. Cataracts don’t help. It is a 1 inch circle with decorations top and bottom, like ribbons. The clothing could belong to an early period. The fancy table was used by Ingersoll photographer John Hugill in the early days, but the painting on the wall of a piece of furniture [see left of picture] is the same as the tintype of my grandparents, Elizabeth Baker and Alex McCorquodale, and her brother Philip Baker and his wife to be [of lot 22, con 14]. The 2 couples were married 1892 and early 1893. If that is the case for this one, my bet would be for the Blow sisters and one other, maybe the mother? Day 205 - January 14 The husband set up our living situation 3 months before I moved to Seattle. He picked out the apartment. He picked out a few pieces of furniture. He picked out our bed & foam mattress. He raved about how comfy the mattress was. I soon found out his idea of comfortable sleeping was the equivalent of laying upon a rock. This thing is not soft, it does not conform to the curves of a woman (or even me: a semi-woman). I tried to be easy going and not complain too much about my morning neck/back/shoulder pains; after all, he loved the damn thing. WELL. Tonight he has said he thinks we need a new mattress. For the past 2 weeks- HE has been waking up sore. We're going to get a softer, cozier, cloud-like mattress this weekend. (13) Levant Mine Levant was one of Cornwall’s ‘Champion’ mines, and the largest producer in the Land’s End peninsula. First worked in the 1790s it came into steady production for copper around 1820, and for tin after 1852. A by product of the mine was arsenic, which was removed from black tin as a gas then condensed in flues to be collected as a saleable product. Levant had a ‘man engine' to transport miners up and down the mine – essentially a long powered rod with platforms. It was a dangerous business, and on October 20th 1919 the linkage between rod and engine broke, sending 31 miners to their death and injuring many more. It was one of the worst tragedies in the history of Cornish mining, and hastened the decline of the mine, which closed in 1930. Station Fire smoke over Mt. Wilson On Sunday late morning, the wind shifted and moved the smoke away from Pasadena, so we can see the mountains again. The Station Fire smoke is now well past Mt. Wilson, but the strongest updraft is still some distance to the west so I hope the fire doesn't reach all the communications infrastructure and science observatories. Taken at corner of Lake and Mountain about 2 PM. Station fire approaching Mt. Wilson The smoke from the Station Fire is almost covering Mt. Wilson in this shot from about 6:30 PM Sunday. The large plume is probably a lot further north, from the part of the fire moving towards Acton. It seems that nearly 1/4 of the San Gabriel Mountains have been burned by this fire so far. The large building in the middle is the Caltech Millikan Library.
