It's a child's bell made by Fisher Price. You'd think it would be more appropriate on a Big Wheel tricycle than on an adult bicycle, but you'd be wrong. I loved it! Partly, it was about the bell's unique combination of primary colors. They just made me happy. It's shape was cool, too. But what I loved most was the sound. The bell sounded as playful and cheerful as it looked -- a definite asset on Madison's busy and crowded bike paths, where you often have to warn pedestrians you're coming, but don't want to be rude. I always thought saying "On your left!" sounded a bit impersonal and pushy if you said it loudly enough to do any good. On the other hand, the standard bike bell's ring was just too jarring. Bike paths are supposed to be cheerful places. The cheerful ding-a-ling of my Fisher Price made people smile, as did its appearance. The other thing was that you sounded it by twirling the yellow ring with a fingertip. By varying the speed, you could modulate the tone with exquisite precision, from a soft, friendly "FYI" to a loud and urgent "watch out!" for emergencies. Eventually it wore out. The ringing sound mutated into a tired croak, and I had to get a new bell. We couldn't find the Fisher Price. I miss it.
