Dawn on Dodd fellside and two figures stand watching the nest. They are waiting to see that both chicks are fed before they are taken down from their nest for ringing. At 5.40 No-ring comes in with a fish and both chicks eat well. Our trained and licensed tree climbers can now start the process of lowering the chicks in a bag to the base of the tree where the ringers are waiting to measure, weigh and tag them.
This year the routine is slightly different though as they have 2 tiny satellite transmitters to attach, as well as putting on the identifying leg rings. Mr. Roy (Osprey) Dennis has come down from the North of Scotland to demonstrate how to do this. L’al Yan is first and at 5 ? weeks old is typically very docile, blinking his great orange eyes gently at the cameras as his wings are measured. Big Yan, at 6 weeks today, is more feisty and makes spirited and successful attempts to bite the hand that rings him. Yes, they are of the male persuasion, both weighing in at about 1,450 grams (females would be heavier at about 1,650 g). Their ring numbers are White 11 (L’al) and White 12 (Big)
Now comes the tricky bit and for this Roy hoods the birds so they keep absolutely calm. The transmitters weigh just 30g each and are threaded onto a black teflon harness, very like a minature baby’s pram harness. It is put on like a back pack. Roy uses cotton thread to fasten them at the front. This is a fail safe weak point and will rot after a few years so the device will fall off – hopefully around the same time as the solar powered battery gives up.
The chicks are popped back into the bag and are hauled up the tree once more. When they are settled comfortably in the nest the tree climbers hurriedly make their way down and join the rest of the party ostentatiously leaving the wood. This shows the concerned Mrs. that the ‘predators’ have gone and it is only a little while after that she sweeps down onto the nest and finds that her babies are both there safe and sound.
OOps it's not quite as peaceful as she thought. A third osprey wheels in from overhead. It's all too much for one morning. With a scream of rage Mrs. shoots off the nest again and goes for it with the full force of her talons. It's easy to see where Big Yan gets his fierceness from!
