Juvenile racing bike 1 Flandria (Belgium)
Naturally from Belgium, the home of Eddy Merckx, there were racing style bikes for the youngest of riders. Example on left (for ages 3 to 5) had drop handlebars, leather racing saddle, a coaster brake and 16 inch wheels.
Larger model at right has a 5-speed derailleur and center-pull hand brakes and 20 inch wheels (ages 5 to 8).
A third 10-speed model (not shown) had front and rear derailleurs and 24 inch wheels (ages 8-11).
During the 1970s, European racing style bikes were imported but in the US they offered little challenge to the highly promoted Schwinn "Stingray" style bikes which dominated the US market.
Tim FirstSchwinn~1963
This was my first bike that was actually my own (not shared). Geoff's larger Schwinn is in the background. I was a 3rd grader and got a brand new Schwinn, green in color, 24 inches to fit my height at the time. I got a lot of use out of that bike and put many miles on it. I even tricked it out with a basket, horn, and baseball cards in the spokes to sound like a motor. I'm sure you all have recollections of your first bike.
