Juvenile racing bike 1 Flandria (Belgium) Naturally from Belgium, the home of Eddy Merckx, there were racing style bikes for the youngest of riders. Example on left (for ages 3 to 5) had drop handlebars, leather racing saddle, a coaster brake and 16 inch wheels. Larger model at right has a 5-speed derailleur and center-pull hand brakes and 20 inch wheels (ages 5 to 8). A third 10-speed model (not shown) had front and rear derailleurs and 24 inch wheels (ages 8-11). During the 1970s, European racing style bikes were imported but in the US they offered little challenge to the highly promoted Schwinn "Stingray" style bikes which dominated the US market. I was a 3rd grader and got a brand new Schwinn, green in color, 24 inches to fit my height at the time. I got a lot of use out of that bike and put many miles on it. I even tricked it out with a basket, horn, and baseball cards in the spokes to sound like a motor. I'm sure you all have recollections of your first bike.
