Wash & Brush Up? One of five main-line diesel locos currently under refurbishment at Kirkby Stephen East is Class 31 No.31410. This machine was built at the Brush Traction Works, Loughborough as D5669 and was delivered new to March depot in November 1960 in green livery. It became 31410 in 1974 under the new T.O.P.S. numbering system and received a coat of BR Rail Blue. In October 1988 the locomotive was heading into the parcels depot at Leeds when it went through two sets of points before derailing all wheels plus the leading vehicle of its train. 31410 was overhauled at Doncaster Works (in blue livery) in 1992 and was released back to traffic in 'Regional Railways' livery. It was finally stored and later withdrawn following another derailment at Carnforth in February 1997. It was being hauled 'dead' by 31201 along with 31273 + 31275 from Carlisle to Wigan when the two trailing locos (31275 + 31410) derailed and severely damaged 300 yards of track. 31410 was later sold from Carnforth and delivered to Kirkby Stephen East in February 2005.
