"Picturebooks in Winter"
Silvery, tangled and asymmetrical, the right side of this necklace is anchored with a floral bar piece used for connecting an array of chain and for displaying the vintage eyeglass monocle and a rhinestone flower charm.
There are six lengths of tangled chain that gracefully drape across the front.
The left side features a large chandelier crystal piece (about 1" dia.), silver bar, and a pointed rhinestone charm consisting of 13 stones.
Approx. Length ~ 24" (Inner chain), Drape 30"
Vintage silver-tone elements are less common than gold-tone elements, thus a bit more rare.
Inspired by a Robert Louis Stevenson poem.
"Summer fading, winter comes--
Frosty mornings, tingling thumbs,
Window robins, winter rooks,
And the picture story-books.
Water now is turned to stone
Nurse and I can walk upon;
Still we find the flowing brooks
In the picture story-books.
All the pretty things put by,
Wait upon the children's eye,
Sheep and shepherds, trees and crooks,
In the picture story-books.
We may see how all things are
Seas and cities, near and far,
And the flying fairies' looks,
In the picture story-books.
How am I to sing your praise,
Happy chimney-corner days,
Sitting safe in nursery nooks,
Reading picture story-books?"

Portable Shrine To St Hubertus 81
Finished!
The Portable Shrine To St Hubertus is finally completed.
Made from found and recycled spring washers, galvanised steel, tangs from steel files, wire from steel coat hangers, eyeglass lens, a carved Irish Punt coin and antler; with silver, 18 and 9ct gold, copper, fine silver, pure iron, acrylic "enamels", antique silver stampings, a CZ briolette, carved quartz, garnets, synthetic rubies, chrysophrase and a tiny brass bee.
My aim with this was to really play on the sense of something very old which had recently been rediscovered, so it has been polished and patchily oxidised.

Agua Negra
These Ice pinnacles start as a solid glacier or snow field.
At this location the slowly moving ice compound eats a part of the international road between Argentina and Chile every winter. Therefore a caterpillar has to cut through the glacier every spring to free this short stretch of road from its solid winter ice cover.
The lower ice pack cut off from the glacier is usually between 1.5 and 3 meters (5 to 10 ft) thick. At this altitude - more than 4000 meters high - and below freezing temperatures the sun starts to sublimate (not melt) the ice during the day. Some spots loose a bit more ice and start to form shallow pits. The bottom of the hollow receives more radiation than the walls each day leaving the walls mostly intact but making the dells grow deeper and deeper until they reach the plain earth at the bottom. Several pits may merge until some free standing blades remain oriented towards the general direction of the sun.
At this place the penitentes are about man's size, but can reach up to 6 meters (18ft) when grown out of larger ice or snow fields.
The first one to describe the penitentes was Charles Darwin when making an excursion into the Andes on his historic journey where he developed the idea of the evolution of species. He must be in good humour when naming the ice blades penitentes (those who perform the Catholic Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation/Confession).
Ruby Creek gold rush
If you come to visit us in Washington my favorite time of the year is late June. The snow melting produces lots of waterfalls everywhere and the streams are rushing, the temperature is cool and the big black flies have not started biting yet. This is Ruby Creek, a ruby like rock was found here which led to gold prospecting in the late 1870's there is quite a colorful history. For us, you see a little marker on the side of the road, you hike down a steep trail, hearing rushing water, then into deep darkness, and you come upon a sight like this. The lighting was impossible, but I wanted to share this with you. Please notice the little waterfall and the color of the water was amazing. BVL : - )

ADDA & THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW 'SECRET NUMBER 438 'FRAKNFURTER WANTED TO HAVE SEX WITH ADDA!"
ADDA & RHPS
speaking of ROCKY HORROR...are you a fan?...like extreme fan?..then i have some fun news for you...
the RHPS midnight show did NOT start up at the WAVERLY THEATRE in NYC...they lie...they stole the idea from SAN FRANCISCO...
six months b/4 it started up in the NYC, it was playing at MIDNIGHT at the POWELL THEATRE in SAN FRANCISCO...the POWELL was just sold to MCDONALDS for millions...and it would take several months/years to go through the planning commission for a new building... the elderly chinese owners did not want their sainted POWELL to turn into a sleazy porno palace, so they rented it to my pal, JOHN S., who rented it for ONE DOLLAR a MONTH...with no contract, in case the plans went through really fast and he had to vacate at a minutes notice!
so he ran rep movies....and because he doesnt do bars...or drink...he started running movies at midnight on friday and saturday...he ran several movies, b4 he hit gold with RHPS...
so, how did everyone start dressing up and all...well, he offered free entry to anyone dressed up as a charater in the movie...so, yep...everyone started to dress up...and it all started
...the other RHPS story is probally a snore, but i was working out at a gym in SF, and FRANKNFURTER was doing a show in town...he was at the gym...and apparently i caught his eye...WELL, lets say, i did NOT want to go home with him...(i lived next door to the gym...)...
but oh my...all i could think is...
HOW AND THE LIVING HELL DID HE GET ALL 'THAT' INTO THAT SKIMPY RHPS OUTFIT...hahaha

What are you thinking?
I am always interested in knowing what things are coming across one's mind. People on stage, people at the airport, people at their important moments in life or someone just sitting silently and looking aimlessly into one direction...what are they thinking? Are they happy? Are they sad? I don't know why I really like that mind guessing game cos there is no answer to it.

San Vicente Ferrer
San Vicente Ferrer / St. Vincent Ferrer
Late 18th or early 19th Century
FILIPINO
Solid Ivory with parcel gold gilding and polychromy.
Dimensions: 8 in X 3.5 in W X 2 in D (20 cm X 8.75 cm X 5 cm).
Provenance: Collection of Dr. Porfirio J. and Mrs. Socorro Rodriguez Callo
A solid ivory image of St. Vincent Ferrer. Excellently detailed and beautifully carved. The body is of solid ivory. Head and hands are carved separately and doweled in. Eyes painted. Original bronze wings and halo extant. In excellent state or preservation. The parcel gilding is exquisite. Miraculously, all the digits of the hands survive and are intact.
The saint is carved wearing the traditional habit of the Dominicans. He is wearing a tunic edged with gold gilding in foliate and floral forms. Over the tunic, one can observe the presence of both the cincture (belt) and the rosary. Attached to and dangling from the rosary is the scapular. Over the tunic, the image is dressed in a cappa or cape with a capuce or hood. Interestingly, the hood is stylistically carved to fold dramatically on the sides to frame the saint's face. The saint's left hand is shown pointing to heaven while the left gathers and holds his cape at the waist which is typical of 18th century images of San Vicente. Latter 19th century versions show the saint holding a book on the right hand while the left still points heaven-ward.
On verso, the hood is more interestingly delineated. Further, the saint is wearing a shawl also edged with gilded rococo foliate forms. Most interesting of all, the saint is shown with a faint shadow of hair on the nape simulating fresh growth. The saint's gilded shoe-clad feet peep under his voluminous gown.

Note 1: San Vicente is shown with wings -- not because he is an angel or that he ever flew during his lifetime. Rather, he is shown wings because he was called "the angel of the last judgement" by one of his biographers. He was also known for his powers of"levitation" and "bilocation" hence the wings.
Note 2: Initially attributed to the mid-19th century based on the realistically carved facial features and the almost too-bright state of the parcel gilding. However, the carved eyes lead one to believe that the image was carved in a earlier period. More probably late 18th or early 19th century. By the middle of the 19th century, very few solid ivory pieces were being carved as there was already a shortage of supply. Also, most images carved in the mid 19th century had inset glass eyes to create an effect of greater realism.
Note 3: The 18th century attribution is strengthened by a strikingly similar treatment of the cowl found on a image of the San Vicente in the Que collection and displayed at the Ayala Museum as part of the Power+Faith+Image exhibition in 2004-2005.
It is my opinion that this piece is far superior in carving and execution to the Que San Vicente.

Guston from near Red Mtn Pass
The Guston mining area was a hub of gold and silver mining starting about 1880. Whenever silver or gold prices peak, there are efforts to reopen a few of the ones owned by Idorado Mining. The hairpin S-curves are just the start of a twisty grade down from the Red Mtn Pass through Guston, which includes 10 switchbacks among 19 corners and only one small stretch of guardrail. The passenger side gets quite the view...

More from that roll that didn't get enough chems. Chloe's roll did fine though, and I have a few shots on it that I'll be getting to once I finish scanning the film I've got in the queue.
Starting to like TMax 100 quite a bit, too. Thanks to Terri Rippee for that little gift. I'm wondering when she's going to stop being able to dig old film out of her and her friends' closets and freezers.
Strobist on this one, if you can call it that:
4 flourescent tubes behind a plastic diffuser as key light from above.
White fill card for fill (duh) below Chloe.
I think the next time I shoot a portrait like this I'm going to have a strobe below in an umbrella shooting up with a plusgreen gel to balance with the flourescent. if that doesn't work I'm gonna stick a gold reflector under there and throw my WB all to shit. probably better with a silver reflector to give some neutral light instead, unless I'm shooting B&W in which case it'll hardly matter.
night sea
The Sea to the Shore by Lucy Maud Montgomery
Lo, I have loved thee long, long have I yearned and entreated!
Tell me how I may win thee, tell me how I must woo.
Shall I creep to thy white feet, in guise of a humble lover ?
Shall I croon in mild petition, murmuring vows anew ?
Shall I stretch my arms unto thee, biding thy maiden coyness,
Under the silver of morning, under the purple of night ?
Taming my ancient rudeness, checking my heady clamor
Thus, is it thus I must woo thee, oh, my delight?
Nay, 'tis no way of the sea thus to be meekly suitor
I shall storm thee away with laughter wrapped in my beard of snow,
With the wildest of billows for chords I shall harp thee a song for thy bridal,
A mighty lyric of love that feared not nor would forego!
With a red-gold wedding ring, mined from the caves of sunset,
Fast shall I bind thy faith to my faith evermore,
And the stars will wait on our pleasure, the great north wind will trumpet
A thunderous marriage march for the nuptials of sea and shore.
