Peggy Elkind works with Venetian glass to create jewelry at home in Arlington, Virginia for her business, TAS Designs. She began making jewelry as an adult around 2003. At the time, she did not expect to do it professionally. She had brought back semi-precious stones from a business trip to Hong Kong in the '90s. Years later, she brought them to a bead store to see what she "could do with them." She came across Venetian glass, which has sterling silver or 24 karat gold in it when it is blown, and describes it as "interesting and exciting, bringing the semi-precious stuff [which she never wound up using] to life." At the time, Peggy's marriage was coming to an end. She calls her jewelry making "basket weaving for the emotionally impaired" because "it's therapeutic and nice to create something when your whole world is falling apart....Pretty sparkly stuff gives you hope that there is life there." She made jewelry for about 3 years before she "went out and got another real job" in order to support her family. The deciding factor in returning to her jewelry business a few years later was "getting laid off".

From the Village to Vogue: The Modernist Jewelry of Art Smith
21 pieces of silver and gold jewelry created by the Brooklyn-reared Arthur Smith (1917-1982) are on display. The exhibit also includes sketches, the original shop sign, Smith's tools and period photos of models wearing his jewelry. In addition to Smith's work there are 30 pieces of modernist jewlery from the Museum's permanent collection by Elsa Freund, Claire Falkenstein, Ed Weiner and Frank Rebajes.
Massive in scale, the jewelry dates from the late 1940s to the 1970s. Trained at Cooper Union, Art Smith, an African American, opened his first shop on Cornelia Street in Greenwich Village in 1946. He was an active supporter of black and gay civil rights, an avid jazz enthusiast, and a supporter of early black modern dance groups.
