100 Pima Cotton T Shirts

I took this photo in my room with the bare minimum of equipment. I used a point&shoot Fujifilm (excellent camera). Lighting was using a Philips 15W CFL kept very close to the rose. The background is a black t-shirt. A stack of books provided the height to rest the camera and the built in self timer was used.
One thing I have learned that you can have cheap substitutes for almost anything but one of the most important thing to have is a stand or clasp to hold the flower in the desired position. I still haven't found a good one. Yet. For this shot a 10ml measuring cylinder was used as a vase.

Yenny Perez is a worker at the Alta Gracia factory.
Workers at the Alta Gracia factory, set up as a "fair wage" factory recently by Knights Apparel, which is one of the largest suppliers of t-shirts and sweatshirts to colleges in the US. This factory is paying workers a living wage, about 3.5 times more than they are paid in other clothing factories in the DR.
The clothes are sold at a slightly higher price with tags explaining to customers that Alta Gracia (also the name of the clothing line) pays the workers more.

The Key West Chicken Store
The Chicken Store opened in February 2000 in a former tanning salon at 1229 Duval, just north of the Southernmost Hotel. The storefront shop is a home for relocated roosters and injured and orphaned chickens. When I visited the Chicken Store in October, owner-founder Katha Sheehan had an inventory of nearly 40 chicks.
The Chicken Store has been a bone of contention for some residents because of early morning territorial cock-a-doodle-doos. The noise doesn't bother Babich and it's only bothered me on my last-call walk home from the Green Parrot. (In true Key West style, the Chicken Store is next door to the Scrub Club, which offers erotic modeling, fantasy role playing and other extreme pastimes for men at 1221 Duval.)
"If you have problems with them crowing at night [chickens, not Scrub Club customers], we offer free ear plugs," Sheehan said. "One thing that gets them going are people retiring from the bars driving by with the boom box going in their car. That wakes them up. This is one of the noisiest towns I've ever lived in and chickens are the least of it. We don't have large features to break up sound and since Hurricane George we lost a lot of our big ficus trees. They're not likely to be replanted since they're yard hogs."
Sheehan was lugging around a big bag of chicken scratch when I just dropped in to see what condition her chickens were in. "This started when I was a volunteer at the local animal shelter," she said. "I was working with dogs but I noticed they received calls about nuisance chickens, orphaned chicks, injured chickens. And it always was, 'We don't do chickens.' But to me chickens seemed a very significant part of wild-domestic animals here."
The Key West "gypsy chicken" is a descendent of the first fighting gamecocks brought to the Florida Keys (first pegged "Isle of Bones") by the original Spanish who arrived by galleon with tools and livestock on board as well as Bahamian settlers who became the first Conchs. These fowl later interbred with a stream of bantam chickens brought to Key West from Cuba (occasionally on homemade rafts). And the feisty Cuban cockfighting chicken El Gallo Blanco was so famous, local lore has it that Key West residents met his boat when it arrived from Havana. Today there are an estimated 2,000 chickens on the tiny 2-by-4-mile island.
"Chickens do us a great favor," Sheehan said. "There's a lot of bugs in the tropics and chickens eat their fair share of bugs. You can't have a better friend than one that's out there eating cockroaches and termites almost day and night. Chickens are omnivores. They'll eat anything from rocks to beef. They eat rocks for their gizzards. It helps their digestion. They don't paint themselves into any evolutionary corner. They always keep their options open. They'll try anything once."
Sheehan knows her chickens. When she was 18, she worked in the chicken section of a kibbutz (communal farm) during a six-month stay in Israel. In 1999 she was certified by the state of Florida as an animal control officer for the Florida Keys SPCA (Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals.) While working at the shelter, she specialized in Key West gypsy chickens. In 2000 she opened the store to finance the effort to take care of the chickens.
"At one point I had seven roosters," she said. "Every night I would put in [pet carriers inside her van] my roosters so they wouldn't disturb my neighbors. I finally said, 'This is getting to be a chore. If I had a store, I could have a place to keep the roosters at night and afford to have people help me with the chickens.' "
Sheehan is from Honolulu. She first visited Key West in 1970 before embarking on an extreme car trip from the Southernmost city in America to Seattle. Sheehan met her husband, Roy Stone, in Austin, Texas, in 1982. His family had property in Key West. Sheehan and Stone were married July 1, 1983, and moved to Key West the day after their marriage. Sheehan loves her city as much as her chickens. Key West is the type of place where natives and animals always put their best foot forward. Sheehan smiled as her chickens scampered around snarfing up her chicken scratch.
"Most of these chicks are rescued," she said over a chorus of cackles. "But we do have a few permanent chickens that are blind or disabled. They really are not adoptable. [There's no charge to adopt chickens, but applicants are carefully screened.] We did find a home for one blind one as an artist's model. Blind ones can be beautiful, but they don't move around a lot so they're good for modeling.
"They're all individuals. The most wonderful revelation for me is that there's as many different chicken personalities as human personalities. There are chickens that are intelligent and responsible and there are chickens that are reckless and hell-bent on self-destruction. There's all kinds o

I went to maui because I knew it was paradise and I'd dreamed of it for so long, knowing with my whole heart that it was where I belonged—and there'd be zen on the beach and I'd wash my spirit in the wavy blues and I'd heard something about everyone being beautiful, too. I'd go with my rucksack and write my poems and meditate on the calm of the ocean waves and take in my solitude. I was, then, really interested in opening my mind, as if it could really blossom like a flower if only I could get the right amount of sunlight. because one day i do want to be a buddha! even though i've been a buddha my whole life! we're all buddha! and you can say all that but at the end of the day you're still suffering and getting annoyed and still very much reacting to things from in your small self and not really seeing how we're all one, how the fabric of creation is love, that all we are here to do is love, love, love—just live from your heart and look on at all the strangers passing by and feel your heart beat for even one of them and you've done something profound. I really do believe that. But you understand, I couldn't get into it. I was just me. I couldn't see how it all was, though I had the intellectual idea of it and, in my life, only these momentary glimpses, flashes of real vision. really i was just a kid with fantasies about everything that was possible in this world, in this universe, etc.
but maui, maui, maui—the only real and tangible plan i made for maui was to get off the plane and head straight to the ocean—only a half mile from the airport and I'd dive right in the water, immerse myself, let the island tak me. It was this great long seventeen hour flight to get out there. a layover in dallas for a couple hours and i'd been up since four am east coast time. i arrived in maui mid afternoon, which is to say the sun had already set in NYC, and all the children were in bed, the day was gone back home and imagine flying into the sunrise all morning, just one long perpetual sunrise that day. But I'd made it to maui and I was in paradise except the wind was monstrous. It could have blown me away. And in my chest, in my heart, I'm beginning to feel that everything is wrong. But i pushed through it. I got to the waters, I got to the beach. These white sands. Crystal clear blues crashing in so slowly and so far in between, shhhhhhhhh.... a year....... shhhhhhhhhhhhh....... a short life....... shhhhhhhhhhhhh and I saw how these white puffy clouds stretched out in an ordered matrix of tufts in the measureless blue sky, going and going and going four thousand miles every direction and it was so impossibly quiet and serene that i knew any second, then, that it could shatter me. i was gonna die there and I couldn't figure out what I'd done to deserve it or how i got so crazy i convinced myself i needed to be there and for what. i was so far from all my friends like derick and anna and alex and jen and lucas, everyone i knew and loved. i dropped my rucksack in the sand and pulled off my shirt and i screamed out to my best friend, whose dead, by the way—which is only to say, he found eternity and all souls go to paradise when they do that—for the ocean, for the pure sweet breeze. we're all in the waves. I ran into the water.

The Fanatic Side of Skimo.
Hello Group!
I'd like to introduce you to my 1.5 year old Ausky (aussie husky mix) girl, Skimo. Her name was bestowed upon her by her owners before me, but I thought it was cute and unique just like her. I've had her almost a year and she is my first dog and I can't imagine life without her. She's my best friend and I have a connection with her like no other animal I've had before. She is always in tune with what I'm feeling and simply wants to please me. She's some what of a rescue, if you count adopting a dog off of CL as one. She's my dream dog!
She's been to 3 obedience classes and has tried dock dogs. I hope to get her into agility classes as she excels at jumping and speed. So that's just a small tidbit about her, you'll learn more as we take this journey together.
My project theme is : The Different Sides of Skimo.
Essentially each week we will see another 'side' of Skimo. There will be a different adjective each week. This week we see the 'Fanatic Side' of Skimo.
Funny Story... Skimo is not a fan of Justin Bieber (the little pop singer with a bowl cut). If you play the song Baby by him she will yowl not singing along but saying.. turn that racket off. I don't think she'd be so happy to pose by a poster of him or wear his shirt if she knew who he was. I'm not really a fan but I thought it'd make for a cute picture, hehe.
Still working on indoor photography, I hope to get better at it as we go along!

Final?
I've gone with the circular design, but stuck with the marker script. People seemed to generally prefer it over the cleaner looking fonts. Also, I picked out this quote from MLK for the slogan. I hope that's all right with the judges. I think it pretty much embodies all that Comfest is about. It's timely, and can be taken many different ways. Please! Let me know what you all think!! It's due one week from today. (on March 1st) I've uploaded the big verson of this one, so in case I don't win, you can make your own t-shirt in protest of me being robbed. =)

Me and my Christmas shirt. :-) Vintage from Etsy.. I failed to wash it before wearing it last weekend (because I naively assumed that the seller probably washed it), and this caused an insane allergy attack, so I had to take it off. At a holiday get-together at my in-laws.
But THIS weekend, I remembered to wash it and I got to wear it to another holiday affair last night. I enjoyed wearing my Christmas shirt, finally. ;-)
After getting a bad haircut a month or so ago, I started curling my hair to cover it up. I actually had to buy a curling iron because I haven't owned one since probably middle school. I'm loving it curled, so I guess I should thank my stylist for giving me a bad haircut, or I never would've started curling it.
It feels like a throwback style from the 40's (maybe?) when I wear it, and paired with my red lipstick, I feel very nostaligic. (haha) Sometimes though it gets too BIG and it starts looking more like wings from the 70's.
(And my stylist's name just happens to be "Blythe". :-D

Modified Slayer T-shirt
This is a Slayer t-shirt that I modified by cutting out the neck band and cutting and sewing the back to create that cool effect. This was done by cutting strips from the back, inserting them through the middle section, then sewing them back into place. It looks like a rib cage, doesn't it? I wanted a way to jazz this shirt up, since it was cut for a male, and therefore made me look quite square when I wore it. With the modification, it shows that a girl can like the music that the guys listen to, without having to look like them.
By the way, I layered a white tank top underneath to show the details.

New Papers
The top one is a sheet of thick-ish Hanji; it was a low-grade commercial
paper, definitely not intended for folding. It holds a crease about as
well as a T-shirt does, except the paper starts coming apart when you
handle it too much. I'm not using that again; I've heard of people using
Hanji before, but I'm guessing they used either a better grade of paper or
a lot of sizing.
The bottom two, however, worked much better; they're normal printer paper,
colored on one side with commercial watercolors. This process seems to
have another effect; somehow or another it changes the quality of the
paper, making it stiffer, making it keep a crease better, etc. I really
like the effect this has, and it's super cheap-- I used the
bottom-of-the-line kiddie watercolors that you can find in just about any
store. The photo doesn't really do the black one justice; it's really
cool, the curved surfaces got hidden by the shadows and the angle of the
tessellation. No worries, though, I'm working on another piece using this
idea and I'll post photos as soon as it's done.
For those of you keeping track, the red one is a logarithmic version of
Ben's Stacked Pleats model. I've been meaning to post it for awhile, but I
needed to refold it first-- my first version was really wrinkly and used
horrible paper (and coming from me, that really means something!)
The purple one up top is a development of a crossed box pleat, and used a
few partial squash folds, which are hard but fun. They're kind of like
that steps 27 and 28 in Lang's butterfly (origami zoo), but harder because
you have to do both sides at once. That wasn't fun at all with the paper I
was using, and there's a small tear that you can't see from here. But
those too should make an appearance in another tessellation before too
long.

Finished shirt
Well, it's done. I used a medium t-shirt from Michaels (they had a big sale, so I got 4 shirts - this project uses 2 of them), and cut up an XL to create the cap sleeves and ruffles down the front.
I know what I wanted it to look like, and where I might have gone wrong (my pattern for the ruffles wasn't quite right) , but considering this is the first garment I've sewn without a pattern (and the only garment I've sewn since middle school), I think it turned out pretty good.
I'm at a brick wall with my sewing skills, and it took two full days, so I may take it to an alterations person to finish off the neckline for me.
I also thought about ombre dying it so that it's darker at the bottom, and the color it is now at the top.
I'd love any suggestions to how I can make it look better without ripping the whole thing apart!
BTW - Everyone needs to tell their husbands that they need to take pictures at a downward angle, not an upward one that focuses on their boobs!

Final?
I've gone with the circular design, but stuck with the marker script. People seemed to generally prefer it over the cleaner looking fonts. Also, I picked out this quote from MLK for the slogan. I hope that's all right with the judges. I think it pretty much embodies all that Comfest is about. It's timely, and can be taken many different ways. Please! Let me know what you all think!! It's due one week from today. (on March 1st) I've uploaded the big verson of this one, so in case I don't win, you can make your own t-shirt in protest of me being robbed. =)

anal much? my two bottom dresser drawers were getting out of hand--couldn't close them, too much stuff, couldn't ever find what I wanted. i purged them last night--came out with a box full of t-shirts to give away, then decided to take it a step further and cut up some matboard to keep my new system all in line. i still need to tape them all together so they stay upright, but what do you think? does it look ghetto? i am an instant-gratification person, so i needed to create a system with what i had on hand.

Me and my Christmas shirt. :-) Vintage from Etsy.. I failed to wash it before wearing it last weekend (because I naively assumed that the seller probably washed it), and this caused an insane allergy attack, so I had to take it off. At a holiday get-together at my in-laws.
But THIS weekend, I remembered to wash it and I got to wear it to another holiday affair last night. I enjoyed wearing my Christmas shirt, finally. ;-)
After getting a bad haircut a month or so ago, I started curling my hair to cover it up. I actually had to buy a curling iron because I haven't owned one since probably middle school. I'm loving it curled, so I guess I should thank my stylist for giving me a bad haircut, or I never would've started curling it.
It feels like a throwback style from the 40's (maybe?) when I wear it, and paired with my red lipstick, I feel very nostaligic. (haha) Sometimes though it gets too BIG and it starts looking more like wings from the 70's.
(And my stylist's name just happens to be "Blythe". :-D

Modified Slayer T-shirt
This is a Slayer t-shirt that I modified by cutting out the neck band and cutting and sewing the back to create that cool effect. This was done by cutting strips from the back, inserting them through the middle section, then sewing them back into place. It looks like a rib cage, doesn't it? I wanted a way to jazz this shirt up, since it was cut for a male, and therefore made me look quite square when I wore it. With the modification, it shows that a girl can like the music that the guys listen to, without having to look like them.
By the way, I layered a white tank top underneath to show the details.

New Papers
The top one is a sheet of thick-ish Hanji; it was a low-grade commercial
paper, definitely not intended for folding. It holds a crease about as
well as a T-shirt does, except the paper starts coming apart when you
handle it too much. I'm not using that again; I've heard of people using
Hanji before, but I'm guessing they used either a better grade of paper or
a lot of sizing.
The bottom two, however, worked much better; they're normal printer paper,
colored on one side with commercial watercolors. This process seems to
have another effect; somehow or another it changes the quality of the
paper, making it stiffer, making it keep a crease better, etc. I really
like the effect this has, and it's super cheap-- I used the
bottom-of-the-line kiddie watercolors that you can find in just about any
store. The photo doesn't really do the black one justice; it's really
cool, the curved surfaces got hidden by the shadows and the angle of the
tessellation. No worries, though, I'm working on another piece using this
idea and I'll post photos as soon as it's done.
For those of you keeping track, the red one is a logarithmic version of
Ben's Stacked Pleats model. I've been meaning to post it for awhile, but I
needed to refold it first-- my first version was really wrinkly and used
horrible paper (and coming from me, that really means something!)
The purple one up top is a development of a crossed box pleat, and used a
few partial squash folds, which are hard but fun. They're kind of like
that steps 27 and 28 in Lang's butterfly (origami zoo), but harder because
you have to do both sides at once. That wasn't fun at all with the paper I
was using, and there's a small tear that you can't see from here. But
those too should make an appearance in another tessellation before too
long.
