#197 - it's beginning to look a lot like christmas inspired by... december. i gave into christmas commercialisation & bought a christmas cd this evening. i cldn't help it. it was just too tempting! meanwhile, & ironically, i am re-evaluating what christmas means to me. smwhere along the way, the excitement & spirit of the christmas season no longer gives the tingles it used to. perhaps as a kid, everything is new & bright lights in general are just attractive & happy. it was also school holidays & which kid isn't happy to be out of school? & now, while we get jaded with the mundane work life & the chore of buying obligatory presents, & the common reminder is that Christmas is a time for family & giving & love & kindness, i realised today tt, expecially for the christians, everyday should be like tt! so apart from the actual birth of Christ, what so special about the Christmas season? everything that we are excited abt is pagan - the lights, the tree, the fake snow (i mean for crying out loud, we're in singapore. winter is unheard of. also, the association of christmas & snow is also a matter of convenience since large countries are having winter at the end of the yr. it has nothing to do with the religions aspect of christmas at all), santa claus is a hoax (fine, st nicholas apparently existed, but the evolution of him is very deceptive), food, drink, parties, presents.... it's all commercialisation. even the religions aspect of it suddenly doesn't make sense. we are asked to reflect on our lives & prepare our souls for the birth of Jesus. to welcome him into this world & be joyful that He came to be one of us to save us. but we are also told to be always prepared for his coming for we never know when He will come again. so if kindness & generosity & love & sacrifice are supposed to be part of daily life, what extra preparation is needed at advent for Christmas? what's so special about Christmas? kid's gingerbread party I like to put a little something together for my kids and the neighborhood kids every year to give them a chance to get together and celebrate. Cookie and gingerbread house decorating is always a fun activity. I like to cover the kids sized tables in colorful butcher paper because it makes everything else really pop. Candy always makes a fun and colorful tablescape so there isn't much work in the decoration department. Just a few fun glass jars to display it and you're done! I used sheetsof colorful scrapbook paper as the placemats for each kid adding another layer of color and fun. The gingerbread flavored sodas area fun touch to add to tables too. Yeah maybe Id get a good shot of her attending or waving or something. Devon was riding in the parade and when his FFA float came by I thought way cool get her with Devons float. Noooo! Not a good idea! Barbie came out great but every pic I got of Devon was blurry CRAP! Oh he was done with me! Earlier in the day when I dropped him off to decorate their float I hung around the school campus taking pics of this and that. So later Devon told me his friends were like "Dude, Your mom is totally watching you, spying on you" Devon said he told them "naw, shes just taking pictures". Of course they didnt believe him. (luckily I left) Sooo later he said he was mortified that I had the Barbie out when his float came by! Said he totally denied me when his friends asked "Hey is that your mom with a Barbie?" He said he "DIDNT KNOW THAT LADY!" Hell I didnt think anything of it. I am who I am. I dont put on airs for anyone. If you dont like me screw you is my thinking, But now I kinda feel bad. I hope one day he can see the humor in all of this. I dont think hes really really mad or upset (I hope). I suppose I have to tone down my wild side, I forget people are watching sometimes. I had plans to layer shapes of cardboard to make it look fancier (note what appears to be a nascent pediment, but in the end I thought I should leave it plain to give kids (and some adults) an idea to build on using their own creativity. Besides, it's just cardboard and I can throw it away when it gets worn ... and build another! (I've already saved a poster carton for that eventuality.) (10) Hanan & Son, 54 Bridge Street (220 Water Street) DUMBO, Brooklyn Features: Nineteen bays on Bridge Street, nine bays on Water Street, and nine bays on Front Street; large segmental-arch openings separated by brick piers; end bays on Bridge Street narrower than other bays; building reflects slight slope of site, with the basement only partially above sidewalk level on Front Street rising to a full story on Water Street; multi-pane metal windows with operable awnings; iron tie rods; corbelled cornice; pedestrian entrance in westernmost bays on Front Street and Water Street; bluestone stairs at pedestrian entrance on Water Street; three fire escapes on Bridge Street. Significant alterations: Two corner bays on Front Street partially filled in and converted into loading docks on first floor; eighth bay on Water Street partially filled in and converted into vehicular entrance. History: The western portion of this block was home to the Union White Lead Works (later the National Lead Company) which began purchasing property on the block as early as 1837. The lead company’s property was sold to James and John H. Hanan in 1893. Although already occupied by a factory, James Hanan and his son John chose to demolish the existing buildings and replace it with a new factory for the manufacturing of shoes. Hanan initially announced construction of a seven-story structure; he actually built a five-story factory. Even before purchasing the DUMBO property, James Hanan was a resident of Brooklyn, living in a large mansion at 45 Eighth Avenue (demolished) in Park Slope. James Hanan (1819-1897) was born in Ireland and learned the shoe trade from his father. In 1849 he moved to America and in 1854 established a small shoemaking business in New York City. In about 1865, his son, John Henry Hanan (1849-1920), entered his father’s firm, and in 1882 the company became Hanan & Son. The Hanan Company was among the first to stamp the firm’s name on every shoe, a daring idea at a time when most people still sought shoes handmade by the dealer. The firm was successful and in 1888 Hanan began opening retail stores to sell the factory’s product directly to consumers. In 1894, the company had stores in New York, Brooklyn, Boston, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Milwaukee, New Haven, Buffalo, Chicago, and St. Paul. By 1914 the firm had thirteen retail stores in the United States and Europe (apparently in London and Paris). Shoe manufacturing was a major industry in Brooklyn in the late nineteenth century, with 65 factories doing a combined business of $2,300,000 in 1894; one-third of that business was done at the Hanan factory. The manufacture of a pair of shoes began on the upper floor of the factory where thin leather uppers were cut from patterns; women then stitched the uppers together on sewing machines; boys then took the uppers and smoothed the seams. The uppers were then moved to the third floor where lasters worked. The uppers were tacked to lasts and leather attached to the last mold to create the form of the bottom of the shoe. The bottom and upper were sewn together and then the shoes proceed to men who inserted the insoles, largely by machine. Then glue was placed on the insole and another employee added the heavy sole, again by machine. The shoes now moved sown to the next floor where heels were nailed on by machine and where soles and heels were trimmed. Finally the shoes moved to the lower floor where they were washed, cleaned, and boxed. On this lower floor, machines also stamped out the soles. The company’s offices were on the first floor facing Front Street. In 1894, when the description of the manufacturing process was written, there were between three and four hundred employees in the factory, although the article notes that there was capacity for 600 people. In 1913 the company employed 1,131 people in its Brooklyn factory (871 men,210 women, and 50 office workers). John Hanan also owned shoe companies in other cities and served as president of the National Boot and Shoe Manufacturers’ Association. He was also the founder of the United Shoe Machinery Corporation, which manufactured machines for use in show factories. After John Hanan’s death, the firm was taken over by his sons Herbert Wilmer Hanan (1872-1933) and Addison Garthwaite Hanan (1876-1923) and grandson Robert Wilmer Hanan (1903-1933). The company went bankrupt in 1935. Old signs extant on the building in 2000 recorded some of the complex’s later occupants: Starlite Lamp Shade Company, Fashion Decor Lamp Shade Company, Washington Garter Corporation, National Leather Manufacturing Company, Gotham Furniture Frame Company, Modern Box Company, Star Fastener Company, Embassy Archives Center, Melcon Design Company, Shaw Television Corporation, Deluxe Novelty Company (DLX Industries), and Latex Specialties. They say that they are of Mandinke origin and have tightly interwoven themselves with their neighbors through marriage, commercial trade, political alliances, and religion. The triangle of the Bamana region, divided in two parts by the Niger River, constitutes the greater part of the western and southern Mali of today. The dry savanna permits no more than a subsistence economy, and the soil produces, with some difficulty, millet, rice, and beans. Arabic texts of the ninth century give the history of cities such as Djenne and Timbuktu, whose inhabitants they call "Bambara." At the beginning of the twentieth century, they were colonized by the French. Numbering 1.9 million, the Bamana are distributed over regions that comprise villages placed under the authority of one family, whose head, the fama, representing the founder, enjoys considerable powers. He also plays a primary role in the agrarian rituals. In 1940, archeologists discovered the traces of an earlier kingdom and found terra-cotta figures that were dated through thermoluminescent tests to around the year 1000. These terra-cottas are proof of a long tradition of sculpture; the first wood figures date back to the fourteenth century. The Bamana believe in the existence of spiritual forces which are activated by individuals, who are capable of creating an atmosphere of harmony, prosperity, and well-being. The Bamana have a very complex cosmology. Initiation takes place within the men's associations, which are more or less active depending on the village: the n'tomo, the komo that directs the life of the community; the nama, the komo that regulates morality violations; and the kore and the tyi wara, which organize young farmers. These societies, run by ancestors, act in political, economic, and medical capacity and exercise social control over the community. In the south of the Bamana region, the dyo association welcomes men and women, but initiation is shorter and less difficult for the latter; initiation for men lasts for seven years and ends with their symbolic death and their rebirth. It terminates in great masked feasts in which the newly initiated participate, going from village to village. The initiates are divided into groups, and the sons of blacksmiths dance in the presence of statues called nyeleni - upright female figures with wide, flat shoulders, standing on small circular -bases. Their cone-shaped breasts project frontally. (K. Ezra, 1986) During the feasts of dyo and the ritual of the gwan, linked to fertility, seated figures are exhibited. Statues of a woman with a child appeared on the market in the 1950s. Kept on the shrines throughout the year, the figures were cleaned, oiled, decorated with clothing and beads, and placed in groups of from two to five pieces. Naturalistic in style, they are of larger dimensions than the majority of Bamana sculpture. The bodies are massive, sculpted in the round, with wide shoulders, the features of the face treated with a sweetness and care for detail. In the same style, representations of musicians and of lance-carrying warriors are found. These statues illustrate the qualities that the future initiates must have: beauty, knowledge, and power. Each figure is "explained" to the initiates and conveys the vital force that contributes to the cohesion of the village. (K. Ezra) During the agrarian feasts of the tyi wara association, farmers wear headdresses in the shape of an antelope, which represents the mythical character who taught them how to cultivate the land. In order to obtain an abundant harvest, they dance at the time of planting and harvesting by imitating the steps of the antelope. The horn is supposed to be the symbol of the millet's growth. The komo association, run by the blacksmiths, welcomes all male adolescents after their circumcision. It has a mask characterized by a huge mouth and antelope horns to which various elements are added, such as animal jaws. The mask, worn only by blacksmiths, "dances" in front of the members of the komo. Its disquieting appearance evokes the bush, and its dangers and its force are such, they say, that it can kill an adversary. Each association has its own masks, headdress crests, and marionettes. These masks appear at times of celebration: at weddings or inaugurations of a market or under other pretexts. With the help of music, poetry, and history as told by the griots, these celebrations are both a diversion and a reminder of the social values of the Bamana. For a young boy, dancing at the time of a celebration is an opportunity to show his personal abilities and to acquire prestige. Tim Oberle 2CAB Public Affairs CAMP HUMPHREYS — The 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade has seen a multitude of valiant leaders come and go over the years and this summer was no different for the Talon family. The brigade said goodbye to Lt. Col. Julius A. Rigole Jr., outgoing commander of the 602nd Aviation Support Battalion, and to Lt. Col. Erik Rude, outgoing commander of the 3rd General Support Aviation Battalion. Fortunately for the Talon Brigade, the new faces around the halls of the Warhorse and Nightmare battalions are no stranger to the full spectrum training regimen. The incoming commander for 602nd ASB, Lt. Col. James A. Duncan took over the reins of the Warhorse Battalion on a gorgeous South Korean morning here during an hour-long change of command ceremony. Immediately before the ceremony, Col. James T. Barker, the 2nd CAB commander, held a awards ceremony for the highly decorated outgoing commander, during which Brig. Gen. Charles Taylor, the 2nd Infantry Division assistant division commander for maneuvers, praised Rigole for all of his hard work and dedication to 2nd ID during his command here. As the only aviation support battalion here in Korea, hard work was almost assured for Rigole from the time he got off the plane in Incheon to the time his boots left the Korean soil and Barker echoed the same sentiment. “We are a maintenance brigade that sometimes flies,” said Barker. “If it were not for the Soldiers and civilians working hand-in-hand in the Warhorse battalion each and every day we would undoubtedly be a static display brigade.” For Rigole, it was the hard work of those same Soldiers that made his time here so special and from his speech to the battalion it was noticeable that leaving the Soldiers he helped mold and grow over the last two years was going to have a lingering effect on him. “To the Soldiers of the Warhorse battalion, I could go on and on about the many accolades and accomplishments you have achieved over the last two years from winning the 8th Army Award for Maintenance Excellence, to setting the standard for the division in combat patrol qualifications, to hosting peninsula wide combative tournaments,” Rigole said. “It has been an honor to be your commander.” Duncan, a former aviation maintenance captain who worked on the same ramp just 14 years prior, let the Warhorse Family know right away that it was an exciting homecoming for him. “What an honor to be a member of the Warhorse Battalion and its rich history,” Duncan said. “And truth be told, I’m part of that history already. It was roughly 14 years ago that I was stationed right here at Camp Humphreys, right here working on this very ramp, and in this very hangar. Back then it was the C Company 52nd Aviation Battalion also known as “the Flying Tigers.” I was a young captain working aviation maintenance in what would become B Company, 602nd ASB.” As the Warhorse Family welcomed its new leader to their ranks, the Nightmare battalion was busy preparing to welcome a new leader as well. To kick things off for 3-2 GSAB, 2nd Infantry Division Commander, Maj. Gen. Michael Tucker, said goodbye to Rude during a brief awards ceremony in the Super Gym conference room. Rude thanked the 2nd ID commander for attending the ceremony and recalled their first meeting. “General Tucker, the day you took command you had all of your commanders and command sergeants major in the Camp Casey Theater and you told us what you expected,” Rude said. “You said many powerful things that day, but there is one that I must say loud. You said ‘If a leader is where his Soldiers are, he is probably in the right place.’ Sir, I took those words to heart and spent most of my time in the motor pool and the flight line. Those are the places where great things happen. Those words made my two years of command fun and rewarding.” Barker noted Rude’s hard work for the unit. “Although Erik has definitely made a significant impact on the Nightmare Battalion and he is definitely leaving the organization better than he found it and we will be sad to see him go, the good news is the Army has this change of command thing figured out,” he said. “When we lose one outstanding command team, we are provided with another one to replace them. Lieutenant Colonel David Snow is returning to Korea where he previously served as an assistant operations officer at Camp Stanley back in 2000,” said Barker. “I have the utmost confidence in his ability to assume command without missing a beat.” Snow closed the ceremony with a subtle expression of appreciation for how Rude had run the battalion for the last two years by making it known that the Nightmare Battalion would continue to operate under a similar manner as his distinguished predecessor. “Soldiers of the Nightmare battalion, you look great,” said Snow. “Your pride in service and professionalism are second to none. The artistic rules of old, for instance, Pope describes as having been "discovered, not devised" and are "Nature methodized"; so too, "Nature and Homer" are "the same" (Essay on Criticism 88ff., 135). This belief in "nature" implies a conviction that there is a permanent, universal way things are (and should be), which obviously entails fundamental political and ethical commitments. Born in Nice during a period of Existentialist post-war France, Serge Armando, from his earliest days, was steeped in a backdrop of the blue skies of la Cote d’Azur. From proximity, his way was ushered into first hand experience with Flux and Les Nouveaux Realists. In 1989, Armando accepted a position at Laguna Art Museum as Exhibition Designer. His first assignment, "Turning the Tide," an exhibition of early Los Angeles Modernists, introduced him to the spiritually-charged abstract works of Peter Krasnow and the hard-edged geometric works of John McLaughlin. Artist and scholar Michael McManus said this of Armando, "Frontal, blunt, and totemic, [Armando’s] works confront viewers as primal plus-minus icons, but are also perceptually elusive in how they activate the viewer’s peripheral vision. Their workman-like massing of precise, flat, polychromatic acrylic, creates an arresting abstract yet pictorial arena. Like many pure abstract artists of the late twentieth century, Armando regards the non-objective as a visual language–still in its infancy–whose potential equals that of representation." In this way, Armando’s works are invitations for viewers to impose upon them their own visual idiolects, complete with their own experiential lexicons which have arisen from the viewers’ own distinct inventories of “heres” and “nows”. Armando’s latest works are, as always, iconic and kinetic. The works document his lifelong immersion in competitive systems of organization. Each work of the series propagates squarely steadfast abstract geometric immediacy. Over his thirty-year residence in Laguna Beach, Armando has played a decisive role in the careers of significant area artists and gallery owners. His works have exhibited in key local galleries and Museums, and have sold to some of Southern California’s most distinguished collectors of contemporary art. He participated in the murals at the Ferrar Publication Building and the foyer of the Cultural Center Delegation Coyohacan and received a Certificate of Completion. (10) Catacombs of Paris Catacombs of Paris From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Catacombs of Paris or Catacombes de Paris are a famous underground ossuary in Paris, France. Located south of the city's former 'Barriere d'Enfer' city gate (at today's Denfert-Rochereau), the ossuary fills a renovated section of caverns and tunnels that are the remains of Paris' stone mines. Opened in the late 18th century, the underground cemetery became a tourist attraction on a small scale from the early 19th century, and has been open to the public on a regular basis from 1867. Following an incident of vandalism, they were closed to the public in September of 2009 and reopened 19 December of the same year. The official name for the catacombs is l'Ossuaire Municipal. Although this cemetery covers only a small section of underground tunnels comprising 'les carrieres de Paris' ('the quarries of Paris'), Parisians today often refer to the entire tunnel network as 'the catacombs'. Paris Catacombs Paris since Roman times buried its dead to the outskirts of the city, but this changed with the rise of Christianity and its practice of burying its faithful deceased in consecrated ground in and adjoining its churches. By the 10th century, because of the city's expansion over the centuries, there were many parish cemeteries within city limits, even in central locations. When Paris' population began to rise rapidly in the following centuries, some of these cemeteries became overcrowded where expansion was impossible. Soon only the most wealthy could afford church burials, which led to the opening in the early 12th century of a central burial ground for more common burials: initially dependent upon the St. Opportune church, this cemetery near Paris' central Les Halles district was renamed as the 'Saints-Innocents cemetery' under its own church and parish towards the end of the same century. Skull Catacombs of Paris 2010 The practice common then for burying the lesser-wealthy dead was mass inhumation. Once an excavation in one section of the cemetery was full, it would be covered over and another opened. Few of the dead buried in this way had the privilege of coffins; often the casket used for a burial ceremony would be re-used for the next. Thus the residues resulting from the decaying of organic matter, a process often chemically accelerated with the use of lime, entered directly into the earth, creating a situation quite unacceptable for a city whose then principle source of liquid sustenance was well-water. By the 17th century the sanitary conditions around Saints-Innocents cemetery was unbearable. As it was one of Paris' most sought-after cemeteries and a large source of revenue for the parish and church, the clergy had continued burials there even when its grounds were filled to overflowing. By then the cemetery was lined on all four sides with "charniers" reserved for the bones of the dead exhumed from mass graves that had lain long enough for all the flesh they contained to decompose. Once emptied, a mass sepulture would be used again, but even then the earth was already filled beyond saturation with decomposable human remains. A series of ineffective decrees limiting the use of the cemetery did little to remedy the situation, and it wasn't until the late 18th century that it was decided to create three new large-scale suburban burial grounds to the outskirts of the city, and to condemn all existing parish cemeteries within city limits. Paris' former Mines Part of the reason nothing was done about Paris' untenable burial practices was a lack of ideas where to dispose of the dead exhumed from Paris' intra-muros parish graveyards. The government had been searching for and consolidating long abandoned stone quarries in and around the Capital since 1777, and it was the Police Lieutenant General overseeing the renovations, Alexandre Lenoir, who first had the idea to use empty underground tunnels to the outskirts of the capital to this end. His successor, Thiroux de Crosne, chose a place to the south of Paris' 'porte d'Enfer' city gate (the place Denfert-Rochereau today), and the exhumation and transfer of all Paris' dead to the underground sepulture began in 1786. Creation, decoration From the eve of a consecration ceremony on the 7th April the same year, behind a procession of chanting priests, began a parade of black-covered bone-laden horse-drawn wagons that continued for years to come. In work overseen by the Inspector General of Quarries, Charles-Axel Guillaumot, the bones were deposited in a wide well dug in land bought from a property, 'La maison de la Tombe Issoire' (a house near the street of the same name), and distributed throughout the underground caverns by workers below. Also deposited near the same house were crosses, urns and other necropolis memorabilia recuperated from Paris' church graveyards.
