Minnesota, St. Bonifacius, Nike-Hercules Missile (Base MS-70) The Nike-Hercules missile on display in St. Bonifacius, Minnesota is one of only a few remaining from the Cold War Era. The missile was based at Nike Base MS-70 just north of St. Bonifacuis. Missiles at the base were stored underground and launched above ground. The missile had a range of 90 miles. The base was in operation from 1959 to 1972. Base MS-70 was one of four that protected the Minneapolis-St. Paul area from possible Soviet Union bomber attack during the Cold War. The three other Nike bases protecting the Twin Cities were at Roberts, Wisconsin, Isanti, Minnesota, and Castle Rock Township, Dakota County, Minnesota. Brass Rail Saloon Virginia City Historical District. Virginia City, Nevada. The Brass Rail Saloon in Virginia City is located in the Old Washoe Club building along the historic old "C" Street. Once a booming town catering to the prospectors who crowded in to the town to fulfill their dreams of wealth, only to find that the real wealth was in the entrepreneurial enterprises that satisfied the needs of the prospectors, Virginia City lay in disrepair during the early 1900's. This "ghost town" atmosphere was eventually capitalized upon by the new enterprising business minded people and turned into a tourist attraction. Of the few saloons that exist today in comparison to the numbers that existed when the town originated, The Brass Rail, also known as Danielle's Brass Rail is one of the noted saloons along the old town's main street. Here you will find gaming and slot machines, however the saloon is most noted for having the oldest roulette wheel in Nevada on its premises. For aficionados of antiques, or just fans of of the gaming industry, this is the place to stop in. In addition to all of the gaming attributes, the saloon has a bar decorated with an antique collection of gold and ruby glasses, some dating back more than 200 years, in addition to a number of vintage objects dating back to the late 1800's heyday in Virginia City. Another unique feature of this saloon is its Cigar Bar and shop where you will find what cigar smokers refer to as "a good cigar". The shop also carries a supply of gift items in addition to liquor and miscellaneous sundry items. For just plain browsing, having a drink or a bite to eat, a trip to the Brass Rail will be worthwhile. In January 2011 when this photograph was made the saloon was up for sale. Archetypal Schoolmarm The foxing is not quite so obvious in the flesh. This photograph was hard to scan because it is (a rarity) still in its original, ornate (like gesso or plaster or something) silver-painted frame. It still has its original pine backmount. I probably should get rid of that and back it with acid-free styrofoam, but I don't want to touch it. I don't know why, incidentally, I say Arkansas. The setting does remind me of Eureka Springs, for anyone who has been there. If you haven't been to Eureka Springs, you should go. Beyond the tourist trappings, it's a fabulous piece of preserved Americana. One of them would chuck it in the air and then they would both run around like loons trying to get in the photo and also to catch the camera. I did quite well at getting in the photos just by keeping still. But then Lorelei and I wandered off. Some of the photos actually turned out pretty well. We will have to wait and see which one gets chosen... if any. National Cyclists’ Union - silver & enamel stickpin (1926) A small and attractive silver stickpin, yet hallmarked despite its size. Founded in 1883 from an amalgamation of other cycling groups, the National Cyclist’s Union (NCU) organised and regulated cycle racing in Britain. In 1959 the NCU and its rival organisation, the British League of Racing Cyclists (1942-1959) merged to form the British Cycling Federation. The NCU also catered for non-racing cyclists and published their own Touring Guides that promoted cycling holidays and breaks. Their guides also provided useful information on touring routes, stopping places, bicycle maintenance, rules of use, general advice, etc. Enamels: 3 (red, white & blue). Finish: n/a. Maeve has a lowercase M one because we are dorks. And a really simple necklace I made with sterling chain, eye pins, and tiny chunks of coral. Today is a trial run for this--the 24-gauge eye pins tend to bend too easily so I may have to make it more secure if it comes apart. I stocked up on jewelry-making supplies on our trip because they definitely travel well and it gave me an excuse to revisit my bead stash. I have plans for lots of other stuff. Mid Century Chome Riveria Two Tier Serving Tray This is a lovely serving tray that has some unusual details that are sure to make it stand out at your next party. It is a double tiered tray that has 3 separate sections on each level. Each section is rounded nicely and the bottom of each section is etched with a stylized star. To top off the tray the gold handle is uniquely ornate, very much Eames era styling. This tray is in lovely condition, only the handle shows some minor wear. It is etched Riviera Chrome Japan on the bottom. It is 12 inches high, the top tray is 7.5 inches across and the bottom 10.5 across Upcycled mosaic Tiered Trays My own creation from silver and chrome trays, vintage blue Japanese china, and 1920s etched champaign glasses.
