Battlefield Church Battlefield Church or The church of St. Mary Magdalene at Battlefield stands in open countryside. A melancholy history surrounds the Church which was built as a memorial to those who fell at the Battle of Shrewsbury which took place on July 21st 1403. The isolated church is rumoured to stand on a mass grave of nine thousand men who fought and died on the surrounding battlefield. The solitary church stands as a testament to a bloody event in English history. Just two miles north of Shrewsbury the army of Henry IV confronts the troops of the rebel Harry Hotspur fiercely defiant and seriously disgruntled. Battle is declared. The sky is black with arrows. Thousands die in just three hours. The church was built on the battlefield a few years later as a memorial. It first became a parish church in 1547 but by the mid 18th Century it was partly in ruins. However, a thorough restoration by the distinguished local architect S. Pountney Smith in 1860-2 managed to save the building. Although the church retains its original shape, tower and walls the church as it stands today dates from that time. Battlefield Part of my Battlefield collection.
