(13) Playing with my new camera I bought a new camera yesterday. I was really fed up with my old Traveler camera, and it was time for an upgrade. I bought a Samsung s760(a pink one!♥) which has 7.2 megapixel, definitely an upgrade compared to my Traveler who was a 5.2! It also has a lot more functions. And that for 59 euros! It already was a bargain a week ago (77 euros). I like the way ChiChi looks in this pic, she looks really warm and fuzzy. Bought a pocket camera: Samsung L100 (040/365) My new camera that I got from sellout.woot.com for $75 last week. Certainly not as good a quality camera as my other one, but this one will fit in my pocket and will definitely take better pictures than my Blackberry does. There's a camera shop near where I live, and I usually buy my film, chemicals, and paper there. They also have a ton of antique cameras for sale. My parents know I'm really into antique cameras now, so on my birthday, we went to the camera shop and they basically told me to pick anything I wanted. So I chose this little camera! LOL (I almost got a 16mm movie camera, but it didn't have the lens and I didn't feel like trying to hunt for one). It's an Argus C3 Matchmatic, a 35mm rangefinder camera. It's a really cool, "retro" looking camera (I think the two-color body looks kind of classy). I had some problems with the focus at first, my first test roll of film came out entirely blurry. The rangefinder wasn't matched up with the lens (apparently, someone had taken the lens off at some point and didn't put it back on right). It took me a while, but I finally fixed it and now this camera works great. In fact, it takes amazingly good pictures considering it's probably at least 50 years old! Like the standard Argus C3, this cameras is heavy, boxy, and kind of awkward to use. The rangefinder window is also really cloudy and hard to see through. But there's just something about it that I really like. Day 23/365 -- Stash House; Part 1 of 2 7/26/2011 -- Stash house is THAT boutique. They have successfully opened 2 locations since May; one in the Connecticut Post Mall, and one in the Westfield Trumbull Mall where these following 2 shots were taken. First part of the day went by kinda slow; I just sat around, watched movies and photographed a few more pairs of sneakers for sale. I figured I'd go on by Stash House and inquire about a certain product that I hoped they'd be receiving, and was fulfilled with spectacular news :D Oh, but wait...of course something has to go wrong! I had forgot my tripod at home fmlzzz, oh well, I did what I had to do. I'm just not happy with the crops, as I'm so used to using the tripod, GAWD damnz wide-angle warping....lulzzz :D Anyways, I took a few shots and with the amount of tips, tricks, concepts, ideas and techniques that I have studied, attempted and learned these were the finished products. I have beyond much to learn, and the only thing I can do is practice and study more. -- Camera info: Nikon D90 Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 -- Editing info: Dodge Vintage Layers and more layers Patience -- Enjoy! -- All Rights Reserved. And I pulled right in and got a spot as someone was pulling out! Rick is one of the most risk-taking, take a chance to do something good and make a difference guys I know, and we had a good coffee/planning/assessing meeting, brainstorming potential ways he can serve his community based on an assessment of needs in the community done by the community. It involved a legal pad, a yellow hi-lighter and overlapping circles that showed the greater the overlap in the center between the two, the more needs are being met. I think better when I can draw things out on a pad or a napkin then give it to someone to draw/write on it, too. That's what we were doing. It was fun. A lot of the time I get paid to have fun. Honest. Risk taking gives me a lot of energy, and it is always a high energy time hanging out with him. Plus he bought - coffee for him, and a Tazo Zen green tea for me. Nice! He is also one of the fastest typists I have ever seen - it's like something out of a movie. He can look right at you, engage in conversation and take verbatim notes on his laptop on everything that is being discussed, and do it in real time. I am not kidding. When I tried typing like that for this post, just hitting keys with all my fingers as fast as he actually types/keyboards, I erased everything I had written up to that point, so I'm not going to try it again. Doh! I'm ducking into the shot because the way this Starbucks is configured, with glass on two sides, I had to set up the camera on the Gorillapod on another table across an aisle to get the natural light and not use the flash, then finally gripping it onto the back of a chair, making people start and stop when they realized what I was doing - or more accurately, trying to do. This was the best of four, and some people were having fun with it, too. At least that's what I'm deciding to project anyway, in a kind of "that's my story and I'm sticking to it" kind of way. A good time together with a really good guy, good tea, and definitely some good dreams/plans that if they come true, even partially realized, will make a difference. Tough to beat and a great way to finish the day. I went back to The Hive, turned in some paperwork, and was out the door and on the way home by 5:15 p.m. Ahhhhhhhh . . . ! Starbucks York Road at the edge of the Towson U campus, Towson, Maryland. gotta laugh Finally got out to do some photography, but what a course of unfortunate events. I drove out to a nice trail, got out to start my hike and guess what. I locked my keys in the car, my first ... dam it! Had a couple choices, call a cab or take a 3 1/2 hour hike home with a tripod. And not a light weight tripod. I took the hike, at least I could do some photography, and get lots of exercise. Well the weather wasn't to nice so the thought of taking cover under a tree never left my mind. The rain held off and the camera came out. At the side of the road focusing on my subject a fence post, I hear a car slowly pulling up. Well it wasn't someone stoping to ask for directions, it was an O.P.P. police officer and he did ask me lots of questions. First he ask what are you doing, looking at my camera I said ... ah photography. Next he ask what are you photographing, I looked around and said ... nature. The first two questions were not difficult, but then the more difficult ones came. Who are you working for and where do you live, that was it I had to ask if I had done something wrong. The officers reply was, no not yet just taking security precaution for I was photographing near police headquarters. It came out in further conversation that I may have been a Hell’s Angels spy taking strategic photos of the police station. After a couple of laughs I assured the officer that I was a good boy, and on my way once again. Many hours later I finally did get home, and yes that cold beer did go down real nice. Looking back only to laugh at the events of the day, feeling like a fool about the keys, getting more exercise than I really wanted, also being pulled over by the O.P.P. and I wasn't even driving a car. Ha, gotta love a good laugh. car key spy camera This key chain car remote fob will easily blend in anywhere; only you will know that it is actually a DVR recording sight and sound. Pentax K20D Digital SLR Key Features 14.6 megapixel CMOS sensor offers superior image resolution with the maximum control over noise. Shake Reduction compatible with any Pentax lens ever produced, including new SDM lenses, minimizes the effect of camera shake Improving on the technology of the award winning K10D, the flagship Pentax K20D is the highest-resolution camera in the advanced photo enthusiast category and allows more experienced photographers, who demand complete control, to fully customize the camera. The most significant features in the K20D include: A newly-developed CMOS image sensor to bring out the optimum performance of Pentax interchangeable lenses. An improved Dust Reduction system that features the new Dust Alert function to pinpoint the exact location of dust particles for the photographer to remove. A weather and dust-resistant body that allow photographers to keep shooting even in harsh conditions. A PC sync socket for more advanced photographers who use studio lighting. Pentax K20K Digital SLR Highlights Newly Developed CMOS Image Sensor The Pentax K20D features a newly developed CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) image sensor measuring 23.4 mm x 15.6 mm. In designing the K20D, Pentax made the significant transition to a higher resolution 14.6 megapixel sensor, rivaling the detail previously only found in images captured with 35mm film. This considerable gain offers 50 percent more resolution than 10 megapixel sensors, and 20 percent more resolution than 12 megapixel sensors. Pentax Imaging (a leading innovator in the imaging business) collaborated with Samsung Electronics (a market leader in developing and producing semiconductors) in the development of the 14.6 megapixel CMOS Sensor found in the Pentax K20D Digital SLR. The larger photo diode in the sensor gathers more light in a shorter time and therefore can respond more sensitively. As a result, the K20D is able to achieve higher sensitivity levels (up to 6400 in the expanded ISO mode). Also, there is a more direct light path to the pixels. Coupled with a high-performance imaging engine incorporating Pentax-original image-processing technologies programmed to yield natural, true-to-life images, the new model assures fine-detailed, rich-gradation images. Pentax Original Shake Reduction mechanism The K20D is equipped with the Pentax-developed Shake Reduction mechanism, which reduces camera shake for sharp, blur-free images even under demanding shooting conditions, such as shooting with a telephoto lens, shooting in low light conditions or at night without supplementary flash illumination, or using extended exposures for sunset scenes. This innovative mechanism offers outstanding compensation equivalent to approximately 2.5 to 4 shutter-speed steps. In addition, the lighter image sensor unit and refined data-control algorithm offer improved image stabilization over previous models. Pentax Shake Reduction is compatible with existing Pentax interchangeable lenses.* * Lenses compatible with this mechanism are: Pentax K-, KA-, KAF- and KAF2-mount lenses, screw-mount lenses (with an adapter); and 645- and 67-system lenses (with an adapter). Some functions may not be applicable with certain lenses. Large, 2.7-inch wide-view LCD monitor The K20D features a large 2.7 inch color LCD monitor. The wide-view design allows the photographer to view the monitor image from approximately 160 degrees both vertically and horizontally. Since it assures effortless image viewing from a diagonal position, it facilitates low- and high-angle shooting using the Live View function. New Live View function The K20D features a Live View function that allows users to view an image on the LCD monitor during shooting. This feature is beneficial when the photographer moves his or her eye from the viewfinder in specialized applications, such as low and high-angle shooting, or when perfecting composition. The function also allows users to confirm the Shake-Reduction effect on the monitor while shooting. High-performance, high-speed PRIME Imaging Engine The K20D incorporates the Pentax-original PRIME (Pentax Real IMage Engine). Designed exclusively for Pentax digital SLR cameras, the engine ensures well-balanced, true-to-life images with faithful color reproduction by efficiently controlling digital signals transmitted by the CMOS image sensor. It also allows complete control over other photographic factors including white balance and the new Custom Image functions. This imaging engine also features a Double Data Rate 2 (DDR2) memory to assure speedy image processing and high-speed data transfer. Custom Image function The K20D is equipped with a new Custom Image function that lets the user select one of the six modes and adjust an image’s processing to their preference by automatically adjusting tone, saturation, contrast, and sharpness. These modes include Natural, Bright, Portrait, Landscape, Vibrant, and B&W image modes. The photographer can make further fine-tuned adjustments to each setting. The effect on each of the primary colors is shown in a radar-type display on the LCD panel. The user can easily see the effect of their adjustments by using the digital preview option. Expanded Dynamic Range Function The K20D adds a dynamic-range expansion function, which allows the user to expand the dynamic range (or range of gradation reproduction) while retaining the proper contrast to avoid white-washed areas. With an approximately 1EV expansion effect, it assures beautiful, rich-gradation images. Dust-proof, water-resistant construction The K20D boasts an extremely reliable weather-resistant and dust-proof construction with special seals applied to 72 different parts of the camera body, including the shutter release button and all the switches, levers, dials. This dependable body makes it possible to use the K20D in the rain or dusty locations without worries. Comprehensive Dust Removal System With Prevention, Removal and Alerting Devices The K20D features the user-friendly Dust Removal system to prevent dust from sticking to the surface of the CMOS image sensor (or low-pass filter). The Pentax-original Super Protect (SP) coating, applied to the image sensor surface through vapor deposition of a fluorine compound, effectively prevents dust from sticking to the surface. In the next step, dust that may remain on the surface will be shaken off when the system shifts the image sensor at high speed. Finally, the dust that is shaken off the image sensor falls onto an adhesive strip positioned at the bottom of the unit, eliminating any possibility of the dust returning to the image sensor surface. This upgraded Dust Reduction system also offers a new Dust Alert function, which shows the user exactly where dust may be sticking to the sensor surface. The K20D also features a versatile exposure system for faithful reproduction of creative intentions: Hyper Program Function The K20D’s Hyper Program function allows users to instantly switch to the Shutter-Priority or Aperture-Priority AE mode from the Programmed AE mode with a simple turn of the electronic dials on the grip. To return to the Programmed AE mode, simply press the green button positioned next to the shutter release button. Hyper Manual Function When shooting in Manual mode, one push of the green button allows the user to instantly set the proper exposure for the subject. Sensitivity-Priority mode The K20D features a unique Sensitivity-Priority (Sv) mode designed to automatically select the optimum combination of aperture and shutter speed for a user-selected sensitivity. The sensitivity can be shifted instantly in 1/2 or 1/3 steps by turning the electronic dial on the back panel. Shutter/Aperture-Priority mode Taking full advantage of the unique capability of digital cameras, which permit automatic shift of sensitivity at any time, the Shutter/Aperture-Priority (TAv) mode automatically selects the most appropriate sensitivity for a user-selected shutter-speed/aperture combination. This mode allows users to experiment with a greater range of photographic expressions with greater ease. Bright, clear viewfinder Featuring a glass pentaprism, the K20D’s viewfinder offers an approximately 95 percent field of view and an approximately 0.95x magnification for easy viewing of the subject and effortless confirmation of focus and composition. Coupled with the acclaimed Natural-Bright-Matte II focusing screen, it delivers a large, bright subject image. Continuous shooting at approximately three images per second To trace the movement of an active subject or capture a sequence of the subject’s expressions, the K20D offers a continuous shooting mode that allows the photographer to capture as many as 38 images in succession (in JPEG recording format) at a maximum speed of approximately three images (frames) per second. When switched to the new high-speed advance mode, the user may capture up to approximately 115 images at the speed of approximately 21 images per second.* * The image size is fixed at 1.6 megapixels in the Burst Shooting mode. High-precision 11-point wide-frame AF The K20D’s sophisticated SAFOX VIII autofocus system features 11 sensor points (with nine cross-type sensors) to automatically focus on the subject with utmost precision, even when it is positioned off center. When the subject is captured in focus, the in-focus sensor point is automatically superimposed in red in the viewfinder for at-a-glance confirmation. Powerful rechargeable batteries The K20D features large capacity Lithium-ion rechargeable batteries, which can capture approximately 740 images when fully charged. The dramatically improved battery capacity (over the previous K10D) is the result of a new energy saving design. Additional Features A PC Sync socket for shooting with studio lights. The camera remains weather and dust sealed even when the PC socket cap is removed. Choice of 16-segment multi-pattern metering, center-weighted metering and spot metering to accommodate various photographic applications Reliable, durable shutter unit assuring more than 100,000 shutter releases High-rigidity stainless-steel chassis 36 custom functions to personalize camera operations Universal-type X-sync socket RAW button for single-action image-file switching Digital Preview for verifying camera settings Optional Battery Grip (D-BG2) for extended shooting sessions Nine digital filters to add creative and artistic touches In-body RAW data development for image filing in JPEG and TIFF formats Compatibility with SDM equipped lenses for quiet, extra-smooth autofocus operation Pentax PHOTO Laboratory 3, RAW data processing software, Pentax PHOTO Browser 3, browser software and Pentax REMOTE Assistant 3, camera control software, included on the accompanying CD-ROM (16) The 12800 experiment I was presented with a nice dim scene today & thought I'd try an experiment & push my iso to Hi1 (iso 12,800) & see what camera Raw 6 could make of it. It seems to have a little more finesse than previous versions. Chroma noise I cannot abhor, so I blitzed that fairly hard, whilst I balanced the luminance noise to retain much of the detail. I then ran Nik Softwares Dfine 2.0 in photoshop to further reduce the noise (I rate this plugin highly as it can be fine tuned & retains lots of sharpness as a default) The result is usable I'd say. I haven't tried a print yet but I'd say a decent A4 would be easily achievable. Of course a tripod would have been the best oprtion here, seconded by a larger aperture, but it's nice to know that I can push it this high if it comes to the crunch. 070721 172256 6220 LR This is not only to show the world that I already bought the new Harry Potter book but also to test different ways of converting my 350D photos from RAW to jpg. In this experiment I've used Canon Digital Photo Professional (last update), Adobe Lightroom and the recently updated Adobe Camera Raw from within Adobe CS3 Bridge. Conclusion, although the clumsy interface and the huge files that generate I think I do prefer DPP results. You can identify the software used in the file name (last characters). All the three of them were left with the default settings only changing DPI in DPP so that it could be at 240 like the other two. camera raw defaults Kinky never looked so normal. I actually have both DVDs, the first one and this one. Both are not that great in my opinion, but they are worth having anyway because there is not much other information around. The problem I have is that Will leaves out a lot of the technical numbers such as F-stop and Shutterspeed info. For me, when photographers talk about their shots, I like it when they add technical info so that I can get an idea about what and why they are setting their camera in a particular way. I should also mention I purchased the iPod version instead of the DVD. Its a SONY where ever there is a wedding.. Long time ago, there were those old type of photographs which used to give and keep memories of the wedding. Slowly those photograph qualities kept on improving. Fast forward today, you can just pop in the cassette or the dvd and watch your entire wedding once again. Seriously Sony did some aggressive marketing their handycams as wedding family handy cams. The Singapore Grip (New York Review Books Classics) Singapore, 1939: life on the eve of World War II just isn't what it used to be for Walter Blackett, head of British Singapore's oldest and most powerful firm. No matter how forcefully the police break one strike, the natives go on strike somewhere else. His daughter keeps entangling herself with the most unsuitable beaus, while her intended match, the son of Blackett's partner, is an idealistic sympathizer with the League of Nations and a vegetarian. Business may be booming—what with the war in Europe, the Allies are desperate for rubber and helpless to resist Blackett's price-fixing and market manipulation—but something is wrong. No one suspects that the world of the British Empire, of fixed boundaries between classes and nations, is about to come to a terrible end. A love story and a war story, a tragicomic tale of a city under siege and a dying way of life, The Singapore Grip completes the “Empire Trilogy” that began with Troubles and the Booker prize-winning Siege of Krishnapur. The three Japanese photographers, who completed the “client” group, with Ed and me - were fun, polite, and dedicated to their photography. Upper Antelope slot canyon is a short canyon. It seemed little over 100 yards long to me, but the tour pamphlets list it as longer. I’m glad I went. The lighting in Upper Antelope was far too challenging for my photography skills and stubborn refusal to use a tripod. A sturdy full size tripod is pretty much a requirement to get “good” photographs in this canyon. I’m not a “tour group” guy (I’m the antithesis), so I much preferred my 2008 experience with Lower Antelope slot canyon. It was prettier, better lighting, you could drive to it yourself, no guide required, and no time limit on how much time you spent in the slot canyon. So, I offer up a few snapshots, taken hand held with a point and shoot Canon for my memories, and to give any thinking of doing the same tour, some glimpse of the experience. 0 ACTIVITIES DAY NINE OF TWELVE 0 Making one motel reservation after another and staying one night allowed us to cover a lot of territory. We stayed in Motel 6s whenever possible. It is easy to make reservations and if plans change, they have a generous and easy to achieve cancellation policy. That said it was a real treat when we made reservations for two nights in a row. We did this at Moab and we did this at Page. You get a lot more quality use out of your rooms this way and it nice to break up the constant long distance travel each day, even if you are seeing lots of cool stuff. So when we left our motel rooms Tuesday morning, we left most of our stuff at the motel and took only what we needed for the “Wave lottery” and the Upper Antelope slot canyon tour, with us in the Jeep. There were some nice photo ops driving to the Paria River Rangers’ station that morning. The sky was clear and the morning sun is always great hitting the sandstone cliffs and mesas. We were not successful in winning a spot for Wednesday morning to hike the Wave. Only ten people get the walk in permit by lottery and there were 52 of us there hoping to get one. We shrugged off the attempt and headed for the tour guide headquarters for our Upper Antelope tour. By the time we had finished the Upper Antelope tour I was disappointed and considered it the least desirable stop of the entire road trip, along with the Zuni Pueblo visit. But time puts things in perspective. Now I’m glad I went. The Martres photo guidebook I had along with me, warned that taking good photos in Upper Antelope was a “challenge” and I knew I would be using either my Canon G9 or G10 and stubbornly refuse to use a tripod, though I took a small metal tripod with me. When the company switched us from the promised ride in the Suburban to the back of a bouncy exhaust fume filled pickup truck I was irritated, but not too much. The ride up the wash was kind of fun, despite the fumes. Then when we got inside Upper Antelope, Ed and the three Japanese clients with their expensive and cameras and tripods accepted that I was along for the hike and didn’t let it bother them at all that I was going to try to take photos with an advanced point and shoot rather than a DSLR with correct lens, and sturdy tripod. Our guide however asked to see my camera when we were a short ways into Upper Antelope and before I knew what he was doing he started changing all the settings on my camera saying “too many automatic settings”. Well I kept my cool but it really made me mad. I asked him to return my camera and to return ALL the settings he had changed back to those I had on “my” camera, before he started making all the changes. From then on all got better. The guide accepted me as an old stubborn, (probably stupid), hiker and snapshot artist, instead of a serious photographer. All of us got along famously and I was really pleased to see Ed in his element with some serious photography challenges and opportunities. The three Japanese were first class all the way, letting me take my turn at photo ops and always smiling and enjoying the canyon photo ops experience. By the time our time was up in Upper Antelope Canyon we were all happy. Our guide played his flute inside the slot canyon and did a great job of it. The flute playing “fit” and added to the experience. Out of the photos I took in Upper Antelope Canyon more than half of them were badly blurred, no matter how steady I thought I was holding my camera with the slow shutter speed required of the reduced and contrasting light. BUT the photos that did come out are memory makers for me. It will remind me of the fun time I had despite the “rocky” start. With its weather-resistant design allowing for indoor and outdoor use, and its automatic daytime-to-nighttime viewing functionality, the SPECO CVC-927PTZ is perfect for a wide range of applications including the monitoring of people and property in most any situation. This integrated PTZ (pan/tilt/zoom) dome camera utilizes a 0.25-inch color Sony Exview HAD CCD (charge-coupled device) image sensor with a 4.1- to 73.8-millimeter varifocal lens with auto focus. The CVC-927PTZ achieves a high resolution with 480 horizontal TVL (TV lines) and up to 768-by-494 effective picture elements via the NTSC signal system. This unit includes an extraordinary 18x optical and 12x digital zoom that allows you can clearly pick out even the most distant objects, and a S/N (signal-to-noise) ratio of better than 60 dB. The SPECO CVC-927PTZ features a wide dynamic range of operation, and includes eight alarm inputs and four alarm for connecting external devices. Already sensitive to light with a minimum illumination of 0.7 Lux in color to infinity, this unit automatically switches to black-and-white in night-mode with a minimum illumination 0.15 Lux in nightmode. If further sensitivity is required, you can remove the IR (infrared) cut filter from the camera, causing the camera to only transmit B/W images and thereby lowering the camera's minimum illumination to 0.01 Lux. The SPECO CVC-927PTZ has a full pan-angle range of 360 degrees with a tilt range from 0-90 degrees, and includes an auto-flip that rotates your picture 180-degrees at tilt's bottom (for continuous in-motion coverage as something passes beneath the camera). This camera also includes a built-in RS-485 connection for allowing remote operation from many devices such as controllers or DVRs, and runs on 24-volts of DC power with a built-in power-line surge. Technical Features: Sensitivity: minimum illumination of 0.7 Lux in color and 0.15 Lux in B/W, or 0.01 Lux without IR cut filter Effective pixels: up to 768 by 494 pixels Zoom: 18x optical and 12x digital Pan/Tilt: 360-degrees of panning, 0-90 degree tilt with auto-flip function Dimensions: 5 x 8 inches (diameter x depth) The SPECO CVC-927PTZ surveillance camera is a reliable, economical and high-quality solution for demanding interactive surveillance. The CVC-927PTZ is designed to work with a wide variety of SPECO accessories such as an optional housing with a heater and blower for extremely cold environments, so you can integrate it in to virtually any system. User's should note, however, that the camera's image sensor may become permanently damaged if exposed to long hours of direct sunlight or halogen light, so the camera should not be mounted or pointed directly at the sun or other bright-light sources. This camera also requires a PC that is not included in this package in order to take advantage of the Internet functionality. About Surveillance Camera Technical Features Lux rating is the measurement used to indicate how sensitive a camera is to light, and stands for the level of light reflected off a piece of paper by a candle from one meter away. Thus a sensitivity of three Lux would mean a camera could generate an acceptable picture of a piece-of-paper-sized object that was illuminated by the equivalent of three candles from one meter away. The lower the Lux level, the better the camera's ability to work in low-light conditions. The camera's resolution should be greater than or equal to the resolution supported by the system's recorder or monitor. The S/N, or signal to noise ratio, is an important measure of a camera's quality. A poor camera, low-light conditions or poor wiring causes "noise" which consumes processing power and disk space. A camera with a wide dynamic range is ideal, especially for recording areas in which both indoor and outdoor light are present. CCD (charge-coupled device) sensors provide high-quality images that are less susceptible to noise. CMOS (complimentary metal-oxide semiconductor) sensors offer less image quality, but are usually more cost-effective and energy efficient. About Pan/Tilt Cameras A Pan/Tilt Camera has the ability to pan ("move" horizontally), or tilt ("move" vertically). IP cameras often have pan/tilt capability. A pan/tilt camera is ideal for monitoring of situations that need a continual real-time adjustment of the views. Gaseous Nebula N44C Softly glowing filaments stream from a complex of hot young stars. This image of a nebula, known as N44C, comes from the archives of NASA's Hubble Space Telescope (HST). It was taken with the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 in 1996 and is being presented by the Hubble Heritage Project. N44C is the designation for a region of glowing hydrogen gas surrounding an association of young stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a nearby, small companion galaxy to the Milky Way visible from the Southern Hemisphere. N44C is peculiar because the star mainly responsible for illuminating the nebula is unusually hot. The most massive stars, ranging from 10-50 times more massive than the Sun, have maximum temperatures of 54,000 to 90,000 degrees Fahrenheit (30,000 to 50,000 degrees Kelvin). The star illuminating N44C appears to be significantly hotter, with a temperature of about 135,000 degrees Fahrenheit (75,000 degrees Kelvin)! Ideas proposed to explain this unusually high temperature include the possibility of a neutron star or black hole that intermittently produces X-rays but is now "switched off." On the top right of this Hubble image is a network of nebulous filaments that inspired comparison to Botticelli. The filaments surround a Wolf-Rayet star, another kind of rare star characterized by an exceptionally vigorous "wind" of charged particles. The shock of the wind colliding with the surrounding gas causes the gas to glow. N44C is part of the larger N44 complex, which includes young, hot, massive stars, nebulae, and a "superbubble" blown out by multiple supernova explosions. Part of the superbubble is seen in red at the very bottom left of the HST image. The data were taken in November 1996 with Hubble's Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 by Donald Garnett (University of Arizona) and collaborators and stored in the Hubble archive. The image was composed by the Hubble Heritage Team (STScI/AURA). Object Name: N44C Image Type: Astronomical Image Credit: NASA and The Hubble Heritage Team (STScI/AURA) Acknowledgment: D. Garnett (University of Arizona) text from HubbleSite.org From the mouth of the monster It's a strange thing to look right into a vent that is emitting a live flow of molten, glowing lava with a temperature of about 1100° C (close to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit). Te heat is nearly unbearable. Along with the river of molten rock come gases that are not exactly healthy, neither for human beings nor for their cameras. But the temptation to get as close as possible, and take photos as spectacular as possible, is there each time that Mount Etna volcano in Sicily erupts, and it erupts quite frequently. One of the nicest eruptions to be observed and photographed was the 9-months-long emission of lava from small vents at the base of the Southeast Crater cone, near the summit of Etna in 1999. It started on 4 February and continued until mid-November; the lava flow was easily accessible because it issued not far from the point where hundreds to thousands of tourists are brought in 4WD buses every day. Still, during its early phases, this eruption was seen by relatively few people (in comparison with the endless procession of visitors during the high tourist season). Lava rapidly formed a network of subterranean tubes, from which it would issue through ever-shifting secondary vents, called "ephemeral". This is one of those ephemeral vents, which had formed just a short time before I took this photograph. Lava was issuing relatively slowly, at a rate of a couple of centimeters per second. The whole width of this photo is possibly 1 m (about 3 feet). It does look BIG, though, doesn't it? Photo taken 7 April 1999 and scanned from original Ektachrome slide ADDENDUM 22 OCTOBER 2010, 18.30 h (local time) - we've just had another explosive ash emission from the western vent of the Bocca Nuova, nearly identical to a number of earlier events from the same vent, most recently on 7 October. After burning off most of the energy we had on the first two days of hiking my wife and I took the time on our last day to enjoy lunch outside by the Merced River (which involved no hiking whatsoever). We stopped at the swinging bridge along the Merced for lunch and then walked a short ways along its banks to this spot. The water in the river was flowing quickly with all the contributing falls at their peak, so I thought I'd experiment with a long exposure to achieve a smooth glassy texture on the water. I set up my tripod low by the water to bring the camera to an angle that captured these branches and the full reflection of Yosemite Falls in the background and used an ND400 (9-stop) ND filter to allow for a long exposure. As is sometimes the case using my ND400 filter this shot started off with a red color cast that was a bit tricky to remove - I'm still struggling to understand why it only sometimes appears, but I hope to sort out (and eliminate it) one day. As a side note I think June has been my slowest photographic month since I got my camera - I don't know if its the brown hillsides around here, or the high gas prices keeping me from traveling farther but I'm hoping July is much more successful. Nikon D40 | Sigma 10-20@14 | f/9 | 4s | ISO200 | Tripod Nikon D40! I just bought a Nikon D40! I am beyond excited! I took this shot at Best Buy when I was trying out the D40 and D40x cameras on for size. I like that the body is smaller and lighter than the D50, so I should be able to carry it to Disney and parties and such on a smaller camera case, and make good use of it on a regular basis. I'll still carry my SD600 in my purse for daily use, but I am excited for the possibilities this camera will bring--specially as I progress through the 365 day project. Now I just have to get through the torture of waiting for it to arrive in the mail this week. GRR! I even paid extra for slightly faster shipping because I am THAT excited and insane! nikon d40 camera cases Kit includes: ¦ 1) Case Logic Digital SLR Zoom Holster Camera Bag/Case (Black) ¦ 2) Precision Design Mini Microfiber Lens Cloth with Neoprene Pouch This Case Logic Zoom Digital SLR Holster Bag is designed to accommodate your Digital SLR Camera with a Zoom Lens. It features a patent pending SLR-Suspension-System which holds your camera above the bottom of the case, providing superior impact protection. Its memory foam interior cushions the camera to prevent any scratches on the delicate LCD screen. There is a solid compacted base that not only protects the camera from water and accidental drops but also allows the case to stand up on its own. Three zippered compartments conveniently store memory cards, batteries, cords and other small accessories. A removable, padded shoulder strap is also included. This 6x6-inch Microfiber Lens Cloth includes an attached water-resistant neoprene pouch that keeps the cloth dry and protected from dust, dirt and other contaminants. This one is a simple cheap range finder type camera. Focusing using simple zone symbols. I got one on eBay and then a week later found one in a car boot sale for ?1.50. Its a nice camera that is simple to use, however i found it to not be as sharp as a Canonet (although its about half the weight) and my Olympus OM-1 SLR. i prefer using my Lomo LC-A for snaps when walking round, so i can;t see myself using this camera that much. Its a nice looking camera and fun to use, but its not one of my favorites. But i would recommend buying one if your looking for a good film snapshot camera....i might be contradicting myself here, but its like a fav pair of jeans, you probably have some that are better made, and some that are in better condition, but you always go back to the ones that feel right, and for me my LC-A just feels right. hope that makes sense. 2 Film SLR Cameras For Sale- Bradford I have a Praktica BX20 with BD24 flash, and lenses 28mm, 70- 210mm & 50mm. I also have an Olympus om10 with 50mm, T20 flash & 80- 200mm lenses, although this camera is badly igrained with cigarette smells (was not mine) so not asking much for the camera, more for the price of the lense really. Wiling to post but beter off to keep costs down if can meet/ collect in Bradford area. OPEN TO OFFERS. Cameras tested by a 'film' camera user (a good friend) and all in working order. I don't have enough money to pay my debts, bills, rent, travel costs or buy Xmas gifts thanks to having my hours cut to 4 per week; so I really am open to all offers and need a fast sale- cheers!
