The Philippines has some of the greatest billiard players in the world. In fact, it is always in the top three among dozens of countries that compete annually. Efren "Bata" Reyes is considered the world's best in 8-ball, though he continually proves that he is an all-around player by winning some 9-ball world titles. Francisco "Django" Bustamante was also ranked #1 in the world in 1998, and is considered the one who has the "hardest smashing break" of all time.

Columbus Park
Open public spaces are in short supply on the Lower East Side, and dingy but lively Columbus Park is popular with Chinatown residents both young and old. In this park, older Chinese women play cards for dimes or have their fortunes told while Chinese men gamble over checkers. The park lies where a huddle of decrepit tenements known as Mulberry Bend once stood. In the last quarter of the 19th century, Mulberry Bend was New York's worst slum, as evinced by the frightening nomenclature it acquired – the filthy tenements went by names such as Bone Alley, Kerosene Row, and Bandits' Roost. Such brawling street gangs as the Dead Rabbits, Plug Uglies, and Whyos were the powers of Mulberry Bend, and police ventured into the area only in platoons of 10 or more.
Mulberry Bend remained New York's disgrace until social reformer Jacob Riis managed to stir up public rage to the point where city officials were obliged to raze the slum between 1892 and 1894. For the last century, Riis's vision of a clean place for neighborhood children to play has been a reality: there's a big playground, and games of basketball, baseball, or hockey are almost always in progress.

bar1009
Bar -- at The Four's, Quincy. Review follows:
"...This is a sports bar with class, if you'll pardon the oxymoron. From the mural of the Harvard-Yale crew teams on the Charles River to the blackened swordfish and shrimp Diane, this isn't your typical joint. It's a pretty place, dominated by a long polished bar. The spacious dining room attracts all types: couples, girlfriends, guy friends, families. Sports memorabilia gives it the feel of an informal museum, with oars, vintage photos, hockey sticks."

Memorabilia piles up in the front room while we decorate the living room ...
... some Lewis chess pieces, an old B&W photograph, a colour photograph, both taken on the south coast of England thirty years apart, a bowl of shells and stones, mainly from the coast, a bowl of dried plants, an old door hinge, a door knob, all sitting on a piece of slate.
Not sure what this collection adds up to.

Handmade wishes of peace and unity adorn a bus stop in downtown Vancouver, BC, near several stores that were looted in the rioting after the Canucks lost the Stanley Cup finals to the Boston Bruins.
The riots in Vancouver after that game did tremendous damage to several blocks of the downtown area. Living near Boston we were very sensitive about being in town so soon afterwards.
Fortunately the riots were the work of a few, and the vast majority of Vancouverites were horrified by them. We saw signs like this all around the affected area, and every sheet of plywood over a broken store window was covered with similar messages.
