My little Cambodia Friend

My little Cambodia Friend

This little girl couldn't speak any english, nor could she swim - it's important to mention this because I met her on a waterslide at the Phnom Penh water park. Her sisters were running up the stairs pulling us "barang" along and she wanted to come too. One of the sisters told me she couldn't swim, but asked if I could help.

She took my hand, a stranger in a bathing suit (rare in Cambodia - as you can see she's even wearing her play pearls along with her shirt and pants), and when it came our time to push off into the stream of water leading into a ravine of tubing twists, I lifted her into my lap and held her tight. She squealed and screamed and was as equally terrified as she was happy. Her grip was almost painful on my bare skin.

When we reached the bottom, I'd grab her up into my arms, dig my feet into the cement ground, and hold her high above the water. Once we were face to face again, and she realized not only was she still alive, but having a good time, the smile she gave me had to be one of my favorite memories living in Phnom Penh.

A History of Cambodia

In this clear and concise volume, author David Chandler provides a timely overview of Cambodia, a small but increasingly visible Southeast Asian nation. Praised by the Journal of Asian Studies as an ?original contribution, superior to any other existing work,” this acclaimed text has now been completely revised and updated to include material examining the early history of Cambodia, whose famous Angkorean ruins now attract more than one million tourists each year, the death of Pol Pot, and the revolution and final collapse of the Khmer Rouge. The fourth edition reflects recent research by major scholars as well as Chandler’s long immersion in the subject and contains an entirely new section on the challenges facing Cambodia today, including an analysis of the current state of politics and sociology and the increasing pressures of globalization. This comprehensive overview of Cambodia will illuminate, for undergraduate students as well as general readers, the history and contemporary politics of a country long misunderstood.

German Valley WV - Cows in the road.

Danger - Cows in the road, hit the brakes quick on this one!!

Friday
Entry One

Flew out of work, the fleet flight of Friday before a holiday weekend. Everyone cracks a smile upon stepping out of the concrete and glass coffin of the corporate work week. The motorcycle is quickly gassed and loaded, I leave Washington DC at three-thirty, vowing not to check the time for the rest of the adventure. Adventure, the American adventure of the open road is what I seek. The road, my cameras, and escape.

Right turn off of 15th St. NW and I’m motoring past the Washington Monument and the White House. Harleys and clones are already lining the Mall for the annual Memorial remembrance that is Rolling Thunder. I’m soon over the bridge and on I-66 west. I plan on avoiding major highways when at all possible. Preferring scenic byways to drab highways. 66 is a necessary evil to flee the DC metro area as quickly as possible. At the start, 66 is a good quick run, for awhile anyway. Loads of Rolling Thunder riders are heading in 66 eastbound.

I keep the ubiquitous two fingers down to the side salute to fellow bikers out for extended stretches of time. In my experience, HD guys return the acknowledgement about 30-40% of the time. No big deal, some animosity exist though between different bike cultures. Motor-ism two-wheel stereotypes. However with the Rolling Thunder guys there is a noticeable increase in response, perhaps due to no longer just one biker acknowledging another, but a patriotic sharing of support and remembrance for those left behind, POW-MIA.

Traffic worsens further out 66 and I come up on a full HD dresser. Screaming Eagle back patch worked in with POW-MIA covers his vest and is topped by a “Run for the Wall” patch. I keep back a pace and we adopt the natural offset positioning of multiple riders.

After some 66 backup, stop-and-go, we strike up a staccato conversation in the pauses of the traffic flow. Where you been, where you going, see the rain coming? I tell him I’m headed out to the mountains, Skyline Drive and West Virginia. He says he’s just in from there recently, was in DC for Rolling Thunder for the day and will be coming back in on Sunday again. His license plate is obscured by luggage, so I’m unsure of his port of origin.

Later on we part ways and my thoughts turn. Of my parents friends only my step-dad was drafted for Vietnam. Luckily, for us, he only went as far as Ft. Hood, TX, and came back with some good stories about army life and venturing into Mexico (at least the ones he’s shared with me). I think about all the life he’s lived since then, all his experiences and joys. Thinking about what all those who didn’t return gave up, lost, when they didn’t come home. The loss felt by those who loved them, families that have a name on the Wall.

Rain is sprinkling before Manassas. Enough to cool you off but not enough to get you worried yet, at least for a bit. Whooooo. Then come the big drops. I head off the ramp to gear up with the rain paraphernalia under the gas station pavilion. Finally get it all on and get strapped back up and out pops the sun and the rain stops. Too funny. Now I have wet clothes on under the raingear. Rain gear now keeping the wind out that would dry me. I motor on as more rain is promised on the horizon.

This brings up a point about rain. People always ask, “What do you do when it rains and your on the motorcycle”. I reply simply, “I get wet”. Duh. Rain riding has never bothered me. On the straight highways it’s no big deal. Just give more cushion to the cars in front of you. Drive like grandma on the exit ramps.

My turning point is finally reached. Off of 66 west and onto 647, Crest Hill Rd. at The Plains, VA. Crest Hill Road is my first slice of motorcycle heaven to be had this weekend. I’m delighted to find that the squiggly line I traced out on the map when planning this trip has translated so well in reality. The road is still wet from the passing rain clouds, and I give a small rabbit and then a chipmunk a near death experience. My first of many animal crossings this weekend. The road is fantastic. A mixture of hilltop road and tree lined canopies that create forest tunnels. Speed limit is 45mph, 55-60 feels comfortable on most parts. Keeping an eye out for a hilltop barn to photograph that I’ve seen in my minds eye, lit by the sun breaking through the clouds and backed by the mountain vista. No luck on any of the barns actual placement to fit the mental picture I have framed.

Crest Hill Road and Fodderstack Rd is a long stretch. I take shots of a church and other buildings along Zachary Taylor Highway. Fodderstack gives more of the same as Crest Hill, just a narrower road. The asphalt is of my favorite variety, freshly laid. Washington, VA is a tiny town of historic bed and breakfasts. Local wineries appear to be an attraction here too. Right after Washington the rain returns while I’m in rou

Impossible!

Impossible!

Dr Impossible claims to be the half-brother of super-escape artist Mr Miracle, who ever he is, he seems to have all the abilities of Scott Free and a few besides, creating super-traps and using Hush Tubes to teleport.

I've probably mentioned variants before, but to the uninitiated variants are a version of an action figure released in smaller numbers and therefore rarer. In some cases they might be a different version of a character, say Captain America but not wearing his mask. They're cheap to make, in the Cap example, you just need to swap a head but in this case all you need to do is too repaint a figure.

I tend to have a rule with these things; see the variant, but the variant. Even if I've gone to the shop for another character that I may of been waiting months for, if I see a variant, I tend to snap it up. They're hard to find at the best of times in the UK without having to resort to the likes of ebay and the often extortionate prices charged there, so even if its a figure I'm not massively fond of, I'll still tend to pick him up.

In Doc's case, I'm pretty ambivalent towards him. He's a very new character in fact and I've only read one story with him in but I quite like his look and I quite like 'negative' versions of other characters. He is a straight re-paint of the Mr Miracle figure but where Miracle comes with flight discs for his feet, a Mother Box computer and a set of shackles to escape from, Doc gets sod all. In the comics Doc uses a Father Box and flying buzz-saw blades. Okay, so the blades would mean molding new parts and thus more expense but they could of at least sprung for a Father Box.
But that's Mattel for you.

Mattel are producing, in my opinion, the BEST range of comic book action figures on the market today. The sculpts are great (even if they are re-using the same body over and over) and the range of characters are ace, plenty of currant faves and some obscure fellas too. But they seem to be treating fans with contempt. Never have I seen a company bend over backwards so much to be obtuse to a loyal fanbase.
Quality control on the toys has ranged from poor to down right awful, the figures have proved to be hard to find with many popular characters produced in limited, exclusive runs only available at one store, the way they run their sales and Q&A's has been frustrating and now they seem to be putting up prices also.
I really wonder what is going on over at that company, why do they antagonize their customers so much?

RUSSIAN SCAM - 18

RUSSIAN SCAM - 18

Good afternoon mine dear and loved [Enter Name Here], for me it is very
happy day to see your letter. I'm in Moscow! You can't imagine how
happy I am because I already started my trip to you! Moscow is a
really big city! From my city I went by train... it was so long way...
about 23 hours. When I got off the train in Moscow, policeman asked
me about passport and he looked at me like I am an enemy ))) I think
all people here are a little crazy. Everything here is very expensive,
not like in my city... and everywhere are big crowds of people!
Everywhere is so many people! I feel uncomfortable because of it but I
hope I will be OK soon. I couldn't find a cheap hotel, everything is
so expensive in Moscow. I managed to find number for $70.. but I have
counted it also expensive. I managed to find my girlfriend, Julia...
We studied at university. She has allowed me to stop in her house. She lives
with mum. Earlier we lived in one city, but later she with mum, went live to Moscow.
We had many conversations, spoke about you much. Julia it is very glad
for me! Today she has carried out all the day long with me..
And by the evening accompanied to the Internet of cafe, then has gone for work.
[Enter Name Here] I think that everything most difficult has remained behind us!
I had the conversation in embassy! I knew that it would be a difficult
conversation, but I could not imagine at all that I must answer to so
many questions. And prior to the beginning of I have been so frightened,
I so worried. But as soon as they have asked the first question,
I at once became absolutely calmed down. I simply sat, and straight
answered to questions. I spoke everything what I think, in all
sincerity, as always. They asked me actually about everything!
They asked me about my life, about my childhood,, about terrorism,
about my work, about my last relationship. They have read all
documents which I has collected. They asked me about my belief in god.
and often I saw on their faces that they expected from me not such the
answers, but I didn't want to speak beautiful things which pleasantly
to listen to. I simply spoke sincerely all what in my heart.
And first I thought that my answers have not satisfied them, but they
have told that to listen to my answers very pleasantly and unusually.
They have told that "bitter" sincerity always better than "sweet"
flattery. Besides, I already had experience of reception of the visa and
they really have been impressed with fact that I had such a great support
from many people and establishments. And maybe in some hours All papers
will be in my hands !!!!! I can't believe. I feel that I did all correctly.
[Enter Name Here] I should also ask you the very important question once again.
When I'll arrive to you, there is a place, I however can be stop at your home?
Or however I should live in the hotel? But I dont want stop in the hotel.
dont like hotel. But I have found some variants. Just in case.
And dear, dont forget send me all information.
1. Your full name
2. Your full home address.
3. Also once again nearest airport . Where you will precisely meet me.
[Enter Name Here] today I saw my parents in my sleep-dream, and they smiled to me.
I know that it is their approval. I see my parents in sleep-dream very seldom!
I always knew that dream will never simply fall into hands
from the sky. I always knew that if you want the dream to come true,
you must do for this purpose all what in your forces. I know that it
is necessary to believe, hope and struggle. And I really struggled
[Enter Name Here], I tried to do all what in my forces. And I hope god will
help us. after all difficulties, after all efforts I believe that
Everything will be fine! I really feel that I did everything well.
[Enter Name Here] I worry very much, but my heart say to me that I should smile.
And I smile today. I feel that I will meet you. I feel that the
meeting at the airport will be beautiful and romantic. I will tell you
everything what I will feel at that moment, and you will tell me. And
then we will leave the airport and we will chatter and laugh. I will
tell you how I endured the flight in the plane and what I was thinking about.
You will tell me how you waited for me at the airport. And then we
will have a wonderful time together. We will walk, spend evenings, to
watch funny and scary movies, - and I will hide under your hand at the
most scary moment... We will meet together the first beams of the sun
and will see off a magnificent sunset. We will sit near a window and
to drink hot tea while in the street will be a cold. How I want
to have a breakfast together and a supper with candles. How I want to
shout together with you at the stadium; or simply to lay on a bed, and
to tell each other about a life. How I want all this - simple things
which will bring to us so many joy. If everything will be fine, I will
start the most difficult process - preparation of my suitcase! :) .

Moscow Rules (Gabriel Allon)

The extraordinary new Gabriel Allon novel from the “gold standard” (The Dallas Morning News) of thriller writers.

Over the course of ten previous novels, Daniel Silva has established himself as one of the world’s finest writers of international intrigue and espionage— “a worthy successor to such legends as Frederick Forsyth and John le Carre” (Chicago Sun-Times)—and Gabriel Allon as “one of the most intriguing heroes of any thriller series” (The Philadelphia Inquirer).

Now the death of a journalist leads Allon to Russia, where he finds that, in terms of spycraft, even he has something to learn. He’s playing by Moscow rules now.

This is not the grim, gray Moscow of Soviet times but a new Moscow, awash in oil wealth and choked with bulletproof Bentleys. A Moscow where power resides once more behind the walls of the Kremlin and where critics of the ruling class are ruthlessly silenced. A Moscow where a new generation of Stalinists is plotting to reclaim an empire lost and to challenge the global dominance of its old enemy, the United States.

One such man is Ivan Kharkov, a former KGB colonel who built a global investment empire on the rubble of the Soviet Union. Hidden within that empire, however, is a more lucrative and deadly business: Kharkov is an arms dealer—and he is about to deliver Russia’s most sophisticated weapons to al- Qaeda. Unless Allon can learn the time and place of the delivery, the world will see the deadliest terror attacks since 9/11—and the clock is ticking fast.

Filled with rich prose and breathtaking turns of plot, Moscow Rules is at once superior entertainment and a searing cautionary tale about the new threats rising to the East—and Silva’s finest novel yet.

Product Description

Daniel silva has hit the top with his new gabriel allon novel...

A #1 New York Times bestseller!

The death of a journalist leads Israeli spy Gabriel Allon to Russia, where he finds that, in terms of spycraft, even he has something to learn if he wants to prevent a former KGB colonel from delivering Russia’s most sophisticated weapons to al-Qaeda.

Amazon Exclusive Essay: Daniel Silva on Gabriel Allon and the "Accidental Series"

Writers tend to be solitary creatures. We toil alone for months on end, then, once a year, we emerge from our dens to publish a book. It can be a daunting experience, especially for someone like me, who is not gregarious and outgoing by nature. But there is one aspect of promotion I truly love: meeting my readers and answering their questions. During each stop on my book tour, I reserve the bulk of my time for a lively conversation with the audience. I learn much from these encounters-indeed, some of the comments are so insightful they take my breath away. There is one question I am asked each night without fail, and it remains my favorite: "How in the world did you ever think of Gabriel Allon?" The answer is complicated. In one sense, he was the result of a long, character-construction process. In another, he was a bolt from the blue. I'll try to explain.
In 1999, after publishing The Marching Season, the second book in the Michael Osbourne series, I decided it was time for a change. We were nearing the end of the Clinton administration, and the president was about to embark on a last-ditch effort to bring peace to the Middle East. I had the broad outlines of a story in mind: a retired Israeli assassin is summoned from retirement to track down a Palestinian terrorist bent on destroying the Oslo peace process. I thought long and hard before giving the Israeli a name. I wanted it to be biblical, like my own, and to be heavy with symbolism. I finally decided to name him after the archangel Gabriel. As for his family name, I chose something short and simple: Allon, which means "oak tree" in Hebrew. I liked the image it conveyed. Gabriel Allon: God's angel of vengeance, solid as an oak.
Gabriel's professional resume-the operations he had carried out-came quickly. But what about his other side? What did he like to do in his spare time? What was his cover? I knew I wanted something distinct. Something memorable. Something that would, in many respects, be the dominant attribute of his character. I spent many frustrating days mulling over and rejecting possibilities. Then, while walking along one of Georgetown's famous redbrick sidewalks, my wife, Jamie, reminded me that we had a dinner date that evening at the home of David Bull, a man regarded as one of the finest art restorers in the world. I stopped dead in my tracks and raised my hands toward the heavens. Gabriel Allon was complete. He was going to be an art restorer, and a very good one at that.
Over my objections, the book was entitled The Kill Artist and it would go on to become a New York Times bestseller. It was not, however, supposed to be the first book in a long-running series. But once again, fate intervened. In 2000, after moving to G.P. Putnam & Sons, my new publishers asked me what I was working on. When I mumbled something about having whittled it down to two or three options, they offered their first piece of advice. They really didn't care what it was about, they just wanted one thing: Gabriel Allon.
I then spent the next several minutes listing all the reasons why Gabriel, now regarded as one of the most compelling and successful continuing characters in the mystery-thriller genre, should never appear in a second book. I had conceived him as a "one off" character, meaning he would be featured in one story and then ride into the sunset. I also thought he was too melancholy and withdrawn to build a series around, and, at nearly fifty years of age, perhaps a bit too old as well. My biggest concern, however, had to do with his nationality and religion. I thought there was far too much opposition to Israel in the world-and far too much raw anti-Semitism-for an Israeli continuing character ever to be successful in the long term.
My new publishers thought otherwise, and told me so. Because Gabriel lived in Europe and could pass as German or Italian, they believed he came across as more "international" than Israeli. But what they really liked was Gabriel's other job: art restoration. They found the two opposing sides of his character-destroyer and healer-fascinating. What's more, they believed he would stand alone on the literary landscape. There were lots of CIA officers running around saving the world, they argued, but no former Israeli assassins who spent their spare time restoring Bellini altarpieces.
The more they talked, the more I could see their point. I told them I had an idea for a story involving Nazi art looting during the Second World War and the scandalous activities of Swiss banks. "Write it with Gabriel Allon," they said, "and we promise it will be your biggest-selling book yet." Eventually, the book would be called The English Assassin, and, just as Putnam predicted, it sold twice as many copies as its predecessor. Oddly enough, when it came time to write the next book, I still wasn't convinced it should be another Gabriel novel. Though it seems difficult to imagine now, I actually conceived the plot of The Confessor without him in mind. Fortunately, my editor, Neil Nyren, saved me from myself. The book landed at #5 on the New York Times bestseller list and received some of the warmest reviews of my career. After that, a series was truly born.
I am often asked whether it is necessary to read the novels in sequence. The answer is no, but it probably doesn't hurt, either. For the record, the order of publication is The Kill Artist, The English Assassin, The Confessor, A Death in Vienna, Prince of Fire, The Messenger, The Secret Servant, and Moscow Rules, my first #1 New York Times bestseller. The Defector pits Gabriel in a final, dramatic confrontation with the Russian oligarch and arms dealer Ivan Kharkov, and I have been told it far surpasses anything that has come before it in the series. And to think that, if I'd had my way, only one Gabriel Allon book would have been written. I remain convinced, however, that had I set out in the beginning to create him as a continuing character, I would surely have failed. I have always believed in the power of serendipity. Art, like life, rarely goes according to plan. Gabriel Allon is proof of that.

A sparkling Regency romance from the queen of the genre

Beautiful Deborah Grantham, mistress of her aunt's elegant gaming house, must find a way to restore herself and her aunt to respectability, preferably without accepting either of two repugnant offers. One is from an older, very rich and rather corpulent lord whose reputation for licentious behavior disgusts her; the other from the young, puppyish scion of a noble family whose relatives are convinced she is a fortune hunter.

Max Ravenscar, uncle to her young suitor, comes to buy her off, an insult so scathing that it leads to a volley of passionate reprisals, escalating between them to a level of flair and fury that can only have one conclusion...

Towards the sunshine.

Towards the sunshine.

Now that's more like it, sunshine over the Bay of Biscay. True it's at 32,000' and it's probably minus 60 deg C outside but it looks nice especially compared to soggy snow in Munich. Expecting 12 deg in Faro and grey overcast skys.
This plane is full of oldies off for some cheap hols and no home heating in sunny Portugal. Looking at the rows of heads in front of me, I'm on the back row, I now see why it's called the 'grey market'. The in-flight movie is Mr. Bean, thank god for iPod, thank you Steve. This month's Wired Magazine has an article on the 25th birthday of the Apple Mac written by Steven Levey, Jobs is their cult idol methinks. Apparently Mac users are now into double figures! And Microsoft's 'I'm a PC' advertising campaign cost around $300,000,000. They're rattled, no kidding. (Mark you have a lot to answer for).

Waiting for our flight back to the UK, we had a couple in Faro Airport's bar. The beer wasn't cheap - €4.20 each I think for one of those large glasses and the ones thereafter were served in plastic glasses.

I don't smoke but it was refreshing to actually have a smoking room inside for a change.

Flying over Pisa

Flying over Pisa

Flight AirOne Milan LIN-Rome FCO

In 1113 Pisa and the Pope Paschal II set up, together with the count of Barcelona and other contingents from Provence and Italy (Genoese excluded), a war to free the Balearic Islands from the Moors: the queen and the king of Majorca were brought in chains to Tuscany. Even though the Almoravides soon reconquered the island, the booty taken helped the Pisans in their magnificent program of buildings, especially the cathedral, and Pisa gained a role of pre-eminence in the Western Mediterranean.

In the following years the mighty Pisan fleet, led by archbishop Pietro Moriconi, drove away the Saracens after ferocious combats. Though short-lived, this success of Pisa in Spain increased the rivalry with Genoa. Pisa's trade with the Languedoc and Provence (Noli, Savona, Frejus and Montpellier) were an obstacle to the Genoese interests in cities like Hyeres, Fos, Antibes and Marseille.

The war began in 1119 when the Genoese attacked several galleys on their way to the motherland, and lasted until 1133. The two cities fought each other on land and at sea, but hostilities were limited to raids and pirate-like assaults.

In June 1135, Bernard of Clairvaux took a leading part in the Council of Pisa, asserting the claims of pope Innocent II against those of pope Anacletus II, who had been elected pope in 1130 with Norman support but was not recognized outside Rome. Innocent II resolved the conflict with Genoa, establishing the sphere of influence of Pisa and Genoa. Pisa could then, unhindered by Genoa, participate in the conflict of Innocent II against king Roger II of Sicily. Amalfi, one of the Maritime Republics ((though already declining under Norman rule), was conquered on August 6, 1136: the Pisans destroyed the ships in the port, assaulted the castles in the surrounding areas and drove back an army sent by Roger from Aversa. This victory brought Pisa to the peak of its power and to a standing equal to Venice. Two years later its soldiers sacked Salerno.

In the following years Pisa was one of the staunchest supporters of the Ghibelline party. This was much appreciated by Frederick I. He issued in 1162 and 1165 two important documents, with the following grants: apart from the jurisdiction over the Pisan countryside, the Pisans were granted freedom of trade in the whole Empire, the coast from Civitavecchia to Portovenere, a half of Palermo, Messina, Salerno and Naples, the whole Gaeta, Mazzarri and Trapani, and a street with houses for its merchants in every city of the Kingdom of Sicily. Some of these grants were later confirmed by Henry VI, Otto IV and Frederick II. They marked the apex of Pisa's power, but also spurred the resentment of cities like Lucca, Massa, Volterra and Florence, who saw their aim to expand towards the sea thwarted. The clash with Lucca also concerned the possession of the castle of Montignoso and mainly the control of the Via Francigena, the main trade route between Rome and France. Last but not least, such a sudden and large increase of power of Pisa could only lead to another war with Genoa.

Genoa had acquired a largely dominant position in the markets of the Southern France. The war began presumably in 1165 on the Rhone, when an attack on a convoy, directed to some Pisan trade centres on the river, by the Genoese and their ally, the count of Toulouse failed. Pisa on the other hand was allied to the Provence. The war continued until 1175 without significant victories. Another point of attrition was Sicily, where both the cities had privileges granted by Henry VI. In 1192 Pisa managed to conquer Messina. This episode was followed by a series of battles culminating in the Genoese conquest of Syracuse in 1204. Later the trading posts in Sicily were lost when the new Pope Innocent III, though removing the excommunication cast over Pisa by his predecessor Celestine III, allied himself with the Guelph League of Tuscany, led by Florence. Soon he stipulated a pact with Genoa too, further weaking the Pisa presence in Southern Italy.

To counter the Genoese predominance in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea, Pisa strengthened its relationship with their Spanish and French traditional bases (Marseille, Narbonne, Barcelona, etc.) and tried to defy the Venetian rule of the Adriatic Sea. In 1180 the two cities had agreed to a non-aggression treaty in the Tyrrhenian and the Adriatic, but the death of Emperor Manuel Comnenus in Constantinople changed the situation. Soon there were attacks on Venetian convoys. Pisa signed trade and political pacts with Ancona, Pula, Zara, Split and Brindisi: in 1195 a Pisan fleet reached Pola to defend its independence from Venice, but the Serenissima managed soon to reconquer the rebel sea town.

One year later the two cities signed a peace treaty which resulted in favourable conditions for Pisa. But in 1199 the Pisans violated it by blockading the port of Brindisi in Puglia. But in the following naval battle they were defeated by the Venetia

The Man with the Iron Hand

The Man with the Iron Hand

Henry de Tonti stands at the high end of Tonti Creek,

at Starved Rock State Park, Illinois. I took the creek photo,
and the Tonti portrait was painted by Ben Brantly in 1995.

Starved Rock park is rich with the footprints of Henri de Tonti. Tonti Canyon is narrow with two 80 foot waterfalls. There is a back canyon with 3 more waterfalls that only flow with snow melt or rain run off. It's a beautiful place. Tonti canyon connects to LaSalle Canyon, which boasts the largest water flow in it's series of cascades and waterfalls.

When I die, my ashes will be scattered along the high bluff trail atop LaSalle and Tonti canyons. I am attaching some bits of historical information about Henri de Tonti, the Man with the Iron Hand.

----------------------

Henri de Tonty (also spelled Tonti) born 1650, Gaeta, Italy, died September 1704, Fort Louis, Louisiana (now in Alabama).

Among the greatest of the dauntless men who made possible the exploration and settlement of the Mississippi Basin, there is one forgotten man. He was a simple sturdy soldier, blunt and laconic in his speech or his reports, over-shadowed by his brilliant chief -- La Salle -- whose trusted lieutenant, loyal friend and devoted companion he was. The Forest Preserve District proposes to create a lake and name it for Henry de Tonty, Sieur and Chevalier, Governor of Fort St. Louis in the Province of the Illinois -- The Man with the Iron Hand.

Lorenzo Tonty, his father, was a banker in Naples, Italy. After a bloody revolt in 1647, he escaped to Paris where Cardinal Mazarin, also an Italian, had succeeded Cardinal Richelieu as prime minister for Louis XIV. It was Lorenzo Tonty who suggested to Mazarin a system of life insurance which would replenish the royal treasury, and the name
"tontine" for such a policy is in your dictionary.

Henry, or Henri Tonti, was born in 1650. In 1668-69, Henri served in the French army as a cadet. During the following four years he was a midshipman at Marseilles and Toulon, participating in seven campaigns at sea, four in warships and three in galleys. Sent to Sicily, he was made captain-lieutenant to the maitre de camp at Messina.

At Libisso, during a Spanish attack, his right hand was shot away by a grenade and he was taken prisoner. Conducted to Metasse, he was detained there six months, then exchanged for the governor's son. In place of his missing left hand, he wore an iron hook, covered by a glove. His iron hand was feared by the Indians as "big medicine". In 1678 he was engaged as LaSalle's lieutenant and they sailed for Quebec .

LaSalle, after talking with Joliet who had explored part of the Mississippi with Father Marquette, determined to find out if it was the long-sought route to China and India. In 1679, they started out in canoes, accompanied by three Recollects (Franciscans) -- Fathers Ribourdi, Membre and Hennepin -- who as LaSalle extended dominions of the king of France, would "bring the inhabitants to a knowledge of the Christian religion".

From the east shore of Lake Michigan they went up the St. Joseph River, over into the Kankakee and, in 1680, arrived at Peoria where they built Fort Crevecoeur. Father Hennepin was sent to explore the upper Mississippi. LaSalle went back to Montreal by way of the Chicago Portage, and Tonty, after surveying the site for Fort St. Louis on Starved Rock, planned to meet him at Mackinac.

After Tonty left, Fort Crevecoeur was destroyed, Father Rihourdi was killed by a band of Kickapoos, and Tonty narrowly escaped death from an Iroquois war party. Alarmed by the prospect of the French supplying arms and ammunition to the Illinois, the Iroquois decided to make war. They struck on September 10, 1680. At first Tonty tried to buy them off with necklaces, but received only a glancing blow from a knife for his pains. Bravely persevering and with the assistance of an Onondaga chief named Agonstot, he gave them to understand that the Illinois were under the protection of the king of France and persuaded them to call off their attack. Nevertheless, the Iroquois insisted that Tonty and his men immediately leave the Illinois country.

Hoping to reach Michilimackinac before winter set in, Tonty and his party arrived early in October at the site of the present city of Chicago, where they rediscovered the portage taken by Louis Jolliet and Father Marquette seven years before. From here they headed for Baie des Puants (Green Bay). While proceeding by canoe on Lac des Illinois (Lake Michigan), they were wrecked on November 1, 1680. During the next two weeks they lived on wild garlic, grubbed up from under the snow. They ate decayed pumpkins in an abandoned Potawatomi village. They ate the thongs which fastened the lodge poles. They ate the skins and hoofs of a deer killed by wolves, and they chewed a buffalo-hide shield "which gave them bellyaches".

Ultimately they arrived at a Potawatomi settlement where Tonty

Midnight in Sicily: On Art, Food, History, Travel and la Cosa Nostra

A New York Times Book Review Notable Book of the Year

A New York Public Library Best Book of the Year

From the author of M and A Death in Brazil comes Midnight in Sicily.

South of mainland Italy lies the island of Sicily, home to an ancient culture that--with its stark landscapes, glorious coastlines, and extraordinary treasure troves of art and archeology--has seduced travelers for centuries. But at the heart of the island's rare beauty is a network of violence and corruption that reaches into every corner of Sicilian life: Cosa Nostra, the Mafia. Peter Robb lived in southern Italy for over fourteen years and recounts its sensuous pleasures, its literature, politics, art, and crimes.

Paskar, an area supervisor for the UK de-mining charity HALO Trust demonstrates a High Order Burning Box (HOBB), a device which is used to safely destroy anti-personnel land mines. HALO, like all NGO de-mining agencies working in Sri Lanka, are not allowed to use detonators or explosives to destroy mines - so the HOBB device works by incinerating the mine until it explodes. The mine is placed on a grill above sawdust soaked in gasoline - this is then ignited and burns the mine. The 10mm thick steel 'box' contains the blast when the mine eventually detonates, and directs the force of the explosion, and any shrapnel, directly upwards. Technicians observe a safe distance away - the burning process takes around 20 minutes. Mines are only moved if it is felt safe to do so; if not then HALO inform local residents of the risk, leave the mine clearly marked in-situ, then inform the Sri Lankan Army, giving the precise GPS co-ordinates of the mine. The SLA then come and carry out a controlled explosion.

Around 300,000 people were displaced in the latter stage of stages of the conflict (between the forces of the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE 'Tamil Tiger' movement) in 2008-2009. As of March 2010, approximately 200,000 of these displaced people are in the process of being allowed to return to their homes - having spent many months living in camps - but only after specialist de-mining agencies such as HALO have clearly marked dangerous areas and, where possible, cleared residential and agricultural land of mines and un-exploded ordnance left over from the conflict. Working in conjunction with the Sri Lankan authorities, areas that have been mined are being clearly marked with warning signs and then systematically cleared before people are allowed to return. This vital work by HALO is being supported with funding provided by UKaid from the Department for International Development. In the first 10 weeks of 2010 alone, HALO has already safely disposed of nearly 16,500 anti-personnel mines in just a few districts in northwestern Sri Lanka– illustrating the scale of the challenge that lies ahead.

for international NO diet day

for international NO diet day

i have struggled my whole life with weight. i know, for me, diets have never worked: when i hear the word "diet" i hear "temporary." the only things that have ever worked for weight maintenance for me are lots of water, exercise, good food and a good healthy attitude about myself.

now the most important of all those things is "healthy attitude." and i have wondered so often why women and girls especially, suffer from self dislike or self hate. i have blamed the media and other outside influences. but i really think it comes down to how much we love ourselves. it doesn't matter a hoot how many times someone else says that they think we are pretty or beautiful or smart or sexy (although it is nice to hear) it matters what we think of ourselves. and why do we think so little of ourselves? why do we put so much emphasis on our weight (among other things) in deciding whether we are worthy of happiness?

i have no answers to that and i still travel down the road of self hate too many days than i care to think about. but i try. i try everyday to truly realize that i have a good heart and a kind nature and that my outside is just what God gave me. i know that when i am happier with myself that i don't overeat. and that's a good feeling. BUT now, today, i am way overweight. and NOW, TODAY, i should love myself regardless of my weight. and just try to take one baby step after the other to walk a nice, comfortable road to wellness. i must treat myself, we must treat ourselves, as kindly as we do others. let's promise, ok?

The mighty condor of Peru

The mighty condor of Peru

It's been a while since i last put a picture of Peru on my phtotstream. So here you go, enjoy.

The Andean Condor is a South American bird. Found in the Andes mountains and adjacent Pacific coasts of western South America, it is the largest flying land bird in the Western Hemisphere.

It is a large black vulture with a ruff of white feathers surrounding the base of the neck and, especially in the male, large white patches on the wings. The head and neck are nearly featherless, and are a dull red color, which may flush and therefore change color in response to the bird's emotional state. In the male, there is a wattle on the neck and a large, dark red comb or caruncle on the crown of the head. Unlike most birds of prey, the male is larger than the female.

The condor is primarily a scavenger, feeding on carrion. It prefers large carcasses, such as those of deer or cattle. It reaches sexual maturity at five or six years of age and roosts at elevations of 3,000 to 5,000 m (10,000 to 16,000 ft), generally on inaccessible rock ledges. One or two eggs are usually laid. It is one of the world’s longest-living birds, with a lifespan of up to 50 years.

The Andean Condor is a national symbol of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, and plays an important role in the folklore and mythology of the South American Andean regions. The Andean Condor is considered near threatened by the IUCN. It is threatened by habitat loss and by secondary poisoning from carcasses killed by hunters. Captive breeding programs have been instituted in several countries.

Dilip Sardesai, Steve Camacho, Charlie Davis and Salim Durani look back at India's famous first win against West Indies

Interviews by Nagraj Gollapudi

West Indies 214 (Davis 71 not out, Kanhai 37, Prasanna 4-54, Bedi 3-46) and 261 (Fredericks 80, Davis 74 not out, Venkataraghavan 5-95, Durani 2-20) lost to India 352 (Sardesai 112, Gavaskar 65, Solkar 55, Noreiga 9-95) and 125 for 3 (Gavaskar 67 not out, Barrett 3-43) by seven wickets

After over two decades of Tests between the two sides, India's first win over the mighty West Indies came at a most apposite venue - the Queen's Park Oval in Trinidad, cheered on by thousands of their East Indian brethren. The tour was one to remember for two men in particular: Wadekar in his first series as captain, and Gavaskar, who made the series his own with four hundreds and an average of over 150. Old campaigner Sardesai wasn't far behind either, and it was his solid century in the first innings that set up the Port-of-Spain win.

Even stevens
Dilip Sardesai Before the start of the series I was not sure if I was going to be in the first XI. But [Gundappa] Viswanath got injured at the beginning of the tour, and I came in for the first game, against Jamaica, and got 97 runs. Then in the first Test in Kingston, at one stage we were 75 for 5, but I went on to score a double-century. We made West Indies follow on for the first time ever, and that told us that they weren't as great a side as they were made out to be - as far as their bowling was concerned - and that we had every chance to beat them since we had great spinners.

Steve Camacho We thought we had a good chance as India themselves were going through a change, with a new captain taking over just before the series. But [Ajit] Wadekar welded them into a very close-knit team.

A turner in Trinidad
Camacho My abiding memory of the game was the Trinidad pitch. I watched the first ball of the match from the non-striker's end. It was a shooter from Abid Ali, and it hit Roy Fredericks's pads before going on to hit the stumps. The pitch behaved erratically, at least in that first session, but it improved after lunch and in essence became a slow turner.

Salim Durani When I went to the West Indies for the first time in 1962, most of the wickets were quick, but on this series there was no life in most of them. The Trinidad pitch was a slow turner, but there were no problems if a batsman was prepared to wait.

Charlie Davis As I walked in to bat, my first impression was that it was a plain wicket with uneven bounce.

The Oval was jam-packed. About half our population was East Indian, so there were a lot of fans rooting for the Indians. Garry Sobers always said that when they play at Trinidad it is like a home game for India. So it was little scary for me, but I had played a series in England the previous year, and I kind of knew what to expect.

Where have all the fast men gone?
Camacho Garry was past his peak as a bowler certainly. A lot of the time he bowled quickish, and mixed it up with orthodox left-arm. Wes Hall and Charlie Griffith weren't around anymore, and Vanburn Holder and Grayson Shillingford weren't by any stretch of the imagination fast bowlers. So it was a period of transition for us.

Durani The West Indies' bowling at the time was nothing compared to the earlier Caribbean teams, and that is one reason they didn't stand a chance of beating us.

Sardesai Even if they didn't have good fast bowlers, they had a couple of good medium-pacers, Vanburn Holder and Uton Dowe. Dowe didn't play in the second Test as Jack Noreiga was picked for the spinner's track at Port-of-Spain.

Venkat v Sobers
Davis One problem was that most of our top order were left-handers and for the Indian spinners, especially Venkataraghavan, that was an advantage.

He bowled tight, flat offbreaks, pitching them on middle and leg, and he once caught Garry in no-man's land, but since the bounce was uneven, the ball pitched and jumped over the off stump. The Indians knew that once they got Garry, who batted at six, they were home and dry. So in the next over Venkat brought the mid-on fielder to gully to force Garry into doing something stupid. He bowled the exact same ball, and seemed to catch Garry again playing half-and-half. But at the last minute Garry got back and hit it to the mid-on boundary. He then came up to me and said. "This man must be mad to bowl me without a mid-on." I laughed and said, "You were definitely gone to the cleaners in his last over." But that was Garry: he could do anything. Eventually Venkat bowled him in that first innings to have the last laugh.

Sardesai takes charge
Camacho The most important factor in the whole series was Sardesai's double-century in Jamaica. He followed that up with another good century at Port-of-Spain. He was given able support, again like in the first Test, by Eknath Solkar, who we dropped quite a few times.

Davis Sardesai was an accumulator, b

Yakovlev Yak-41M Freestyle

Yakovlev Yak-41M Freestyle

The Yak-141M project started In November 1973. It’s predecessor, Yak-38 didn’t live up to expectations, in fact it’s abilities were miserable. The future fighter was design around (specially ordered for this plane) lift/cruise engine Soyuz R-79V-300. On 26th June 1974 project was officially started. At first, designers wanted R-79 to be the only engine of new fighter, but quickly it became clear, that the plane would not be able to balance in hover mode. After many experiments with different configurations, designers revert to Yak’s-38 powerplant layout, with one main lift/cruise engine and two lift engines only for hover mode. The two lift engines were Kolesov RD-41 turbojets. The final design, was finalized in July 1980. Whole project had many delays, especially there were problems with R-79 engine – it was supposed to be the first engine in the world, to be capable of afterburner usage in both horizontal and vertical thrust mode. To enable the plane vertical takeoff, engine was capable of thrust-vectoring up to 95 degrees- solution used here by designers was for years a secret, and today F-35B is using exactly the same idea. General layout of new fighter wasn’t a revolution, it’s similar in general shape to the Mig-25 – Yak-141M was originally projected to be an interceptor, similarly to Foxbat. As a carrier fighter, Yak featured folding wings. The airframe was mostly made of composites (26% of aircraft weight) and . However in the mid 80’ Soviet military changed their requirements- they wanted Yak-141M to be a true multi-role fighter, what resulted in big changes in aircraft systems. Yak-141M used S-41M radar, it was a derivative of N001 Zhuk radar, used in Mig-29M. It was a multi-role radar, that permitted the fighter to carry , new advanced missiles, both air-to-air and air-to-ground. The airframe was ready in late 1984, but due to engine problems, the first flight took place on 9th March 1987. After another period of engine/airframe problems, in 1989 began manufacturer’s flight tests. Yak-141M hovered for the first time on 29th December 1989. The tests showed, that Yak-141M with full ordnance load, clearly outperformed the Harrier in similar configuration. However in clear configuration, there wasn’t a clear-cut winner. Yak-141M was viewed, as a replacement for Yak-38, on Type 1143 aircraft carriers (Novorossiysk, Minsk Baku (Admiral Gorshkov) and Kiev). On 26th September 1991 Yak-141M made its first landing on carrier. The same day, another prototype, made first, fully vertical landing. On 5th October prototype “77 Yellow”, during vertical landing, fell onto the deck and burst into flames, pilot ejected safely. Although the trials were resumed, with “75 Yellow”, this crash served as a pretext for ending Yak-141M project. Due to collapse of Soviet Union, Soviet Navy had to make cutbacks, and Yak-141M was one. In fact it wasn’t needed anymore: Russia scraped three Kiev-class carriers: Novorossiysk, Minsk and Kiev. Fourth one, Gorshkov was later sold to India. Without suitable carriers (Kuznetsov was able to carry more capable Su-33), Yak’s fighter lost it’s sense. Yak-141M was displayed at Farnborough 92 and MAKS 1991 and 1993 airshows, for few years Yakovlev tried to attract foreign investors but without success. Yak-141M in 1991 established many world records (taking them from Harrier) in its class. There were projects of new versions of Yak-141M, but none of them become real.

Renfrew of the Royal Mounted: Yukon Flight

Investigating a deadly crash of a Yukon Mail Service plane, Sergeant Renfrew and Constable Kelly discover evidence of sabotage. They become convinced that Raymond, the owner of the aviation company, has arranged the murder of his own pilot to conceal the theft of a fortune in gold, skimmed from his client's shipments. Renfrew will bait a trap, risking another aviator's life, in a desperate attempt to get the evidence needed to bring the corrupt airline owner to justice.
James Newill's operatic training was put to good use in this 1940 installment of the popular Renfrew singing-mountie series. The films were based on ten novels featuring the heroic sergeant written by Laurie York Erskine. These stories were also the basis for a radio series, which ran concurrently with Newill's movies and featured House Jamison as Renfrew.

Eastern or Great White Pelican at Chester Zoo

Eastern or Great White Pelican at Chester Zoo

Great White Pelicans are large birds with mass of 10 kg (22 lbs), 160 cm (63 in) long and with a 280 cm (110 inch) wingspan. It differs from the Dalmatian Pelican, the only larger species of pelican, by its pure white, rather than greyish-white, plumage, a bare pink facial patch around the eye and pinkish legs. Males are larger than females, and have a long beak that grows in a downwards arc, as opposed to the shorter, straighter beak of the female. Immature birds are grey and have dark flight feathers. In flight, it is an elegant soaring bird, with the head held close to and aligned with the body by a downward bend in the neck. In breeding condition the male has pinkish skin on is face and the female has orangery skin.

The Great White Pelican is well adapted for aquatic life. The short strong legs and webbed feet propel it in water and aid the rather awkward takeoff from the water surface. Once aloft, the long-winged pelicans are powerful fliers, however, and often travel in spectacular V-formation groups. The pelican's pouch is simply a scoop. As the pelican pushes its bill underwater, the lower bill bows out, creating a large pouch which fills with water and fish. As the bird lifts its head, the pouch contracts, forcing out the water but retaining the fish. A group of 6 to 8 great white pelicans will gather in a horseshoe formation in the water to feed together. They dip their bills in unison, creating a circle of open pouches, ready to trap every fish in the area. Large numbers of these pelicans breed together in colonies. The female lays 2 to 4 eggs in a nest of sticks in a tree or on the grass. The young are cared for by both parents.

More than 50% of White Pelicans breed in the Danube Delta in Romania. This pelican migrates short distances, wintering in northeast Africa. This species is often kept in captivity, or in semi-wild colonies such as that in St. James's Park, London. Their ancestors were originally given to Charles II by the Russian Ambassador in 1664 which initiated the tradition of ambassadors donating the birds

The day I met Hrithik Roshan

The day I met Hrithik Roshan

It's not everyday you see an Indian walking around Cairo... and it's also not everyday you see a famous Bollywood film star walking around Cairo. But today, I saw both.

Now let me preface by saying that I'm not a die-hard Bollywood fan by any stretch of the imagination -- for a big part of my life I found all things Bollywood very annoying. But I get star struck very easily, and come on. It's Hrithik Roshan. Second to probably only Shahrukh Khan! Or Amitabh Bachan (which, by the way, to Egyptians is any Indian person. I've stopped counting how many times I've been told here that I look like him... wow).

So Kiran was in the UAE for Eid break, Abu Dhabi for the first half and Dubai for the second half. She was coming back today and I was picking her up from the airport. Her plane back to Cairo from Dubai was set to land at 6:40 p.m. via EgyptAir. And it did, on the dot. But where was I? Wandering around in the other terminal (Terminal 1) for fun.

Kiran texts me, "Just landed." So I quickly head over to Terminal 3, not realizing that she still has to go through customs/passport stuff. But boy am I glad I left and rushed when I did.

Why? Because as I sat down in the front seat of the free airport shuttle, guess who came waltzing in? Well I don't know. But she was tall, had super straight hair, was wearing nice clothes and had these nice shades on. She was definitely not Egyptian. I have Indian girl radar (which still works here in Egypt where most girls could pass for either Pakistani or Indian) so I knew immediately she was a foreigner. And it was only confirmed when I saw the man behind her. A very light-brown eye-colored Indian man with a hat and the face of a prince (or of a Mughal emperor... the third to be precise... ahem -- haha).

I knew almost immediately, my heart told me, this man... this man was famous. He looked straight into my eyes when he walked onto the bus. I got chills. I had a hunch who he was immediately, but it couldn't be. There is absolutely no way he's in Cairo. Why the heck is he in Cairo? This cannot be. He looks shorter than I would have thought. Why is he in Cairo? And why is he on the free airport shuttle! So I quickly glanced at his right hand. Two thumbs. Yep. This is him. This, is Hrithik Roshan.

I look the other direction, as if I was like, "Psh, big deal." But the moment I looked away, it hit me. Hrithik Roshan is on the same bus as me, and not one Egyptian person knows who he is. My starstruckitis kicked in, I started to mildly flip out.

What to do, what to say! Wait! I need to photograph him, no one will believe me. But oh no, I left my camera at my apartment. The first time I ever really need the camera and it's not here! Oh great, now no one will believe me.

But no worries, I'll chat them up. Make friends.

People, I kid you not, I tried chatting it up with Hrithik Roshan. He wasn't alone, aside from that girl (who I'm just going to assume is his wife, Suzanne Khan, even though that girl looked nothing like the Suzanne Khan I Googled... but that could be because of the shades), he had three or four servant-type people... whom he wasn't very nice to. Oh well. But those are the guys that answered me when I tried to talk to Hrithik on the bus.

I knew where they were coming from without asking or looking at the tags on their bags. They were also coming from Dubai. But via the Emirates flight that landed at 6 p.m. at Terminal 1. The servant-guy told me they were heading to Terminal 3 to get on another flight, so I told them to stay on the shuttle as it's where I was heading.

I text Kiran immediately. "Get your camera ready, they're coming to terminal 3." I didn't have to explain who because I had already spilled the beans immediately as he got on the bus.

So we get to Terminal 3, but Kiran is still in customs. No camera, except for my phone. And Hrithik was probably getting ready to board another flight, so I go up to him and supposed-Suzanne and tell them, "Hey, do you mind if I bother you for a photograph? It's not everyday I see a Bollywood film star in Cairo!" Hrithik kind of laughs but gestures me to come to him. He was nicer than I thought he would be after his display with the servant-people. But I'm confused. I don't want one of me, I want one of him and his girl. I guess I'm just so used to taking red carpet shots that I've forgotten the obvious thing to do in this position would be to pose with the superstar! "You come stand with me, and we'll ask the lady to take our photo." I was a little offended by the way he was speaking to me, but hey, it's Hrithik Roshan. He knows what he's doing. So I give the girl/wife/lady my phone (which I will never wash by the way) and she takes our photo. Then I try to chat them up a little bit longer, but they seem rushed, so I walk away. "See ya." haha. I was so nonchalant about the whole thing. I should've shook his hand. Then challenged him to a thumb war.

Subspecies bengalensis-immatures in KolkataThis is a bird of scrub, open forest, plains and cultivated lands. It builds its nest in a bush; two or three eggs is a typical clutch.

Red-vented Bulbul is about 20cm in length, with a long tail. It has brown or black upperparts, with a white rump. The breast is brown or black, and the rest of the underparts are white apart from the red around the vent. The head and small crest are black.

Sexes are similar in plumage, but young birds are duller than adults. The flight is bouncing and woodpecker-like.

There are a number of regional variations in plumage, mainly with respect to the upperpart and breast colour. Red-vented Bulbuls feed on fruit, nectar and insects.

The Red-vented Bulbul is incapable of synthesizing vitamin C. It shares this feature with a very limited number of other animals, among which are certain fruit bats and primates (including humans) as well as the guinea pig.

A Week at the Airport (Vintage International Original)

A Week at the Airport (Vintage International Original)

From the bestselling author of The Art of Travel comes a wittily intriguing exploration of the strange "non-place" that he believes is the imaginative center of our civilization.

Given unprecedented access to one of the world’s busiest airports as a “writer-in-residence,” Alain de Botton found it to be a showcase for many of the major crosscurrents of the modern world—from our faith in technology to our destruction of nature, from our global interconnectedness to our romanticizing of the exotic. He met travelers from all over and spoke with everyone from baggage handlers to pilots to the airport chaplain. Weaving together these conversations and his own observations—of everything from the poetry of room service menus to the eerie silence in the middle of the runway at midnight—de Botton has produced an extraordinary meditation on a place that most of us never slow down enough to see clearly. Lavishly illustrated in color by renowned photographer Richard Baker, A Week at the Airport reveals the airport in all its turbulence and soullessness and—yes—even beauty.

John Peirce Residence

John Peirce Residence

11 East 51st Street, Midtown Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States

The residence at 11 East 51 Street was erected in 1904-06 for stone and building contractor John Peirce and was designed by noted architect John H. Duncan. At the time of its construction, Fifth Avenue just south of Central Park was the most prestigious residential area in the city and was known as Vanderbilt Row because of that family's intimate involvement in maintaining the elite character of the neighborhood.

Peirce was born in Frankfort, Maine where his father operated a granite quarry. Peirce succeeded to the family business in 1873 and soon came to control much of the granite industry in Maine. In the early 1880s he decided to move to New York City to oversee the operations of his New York and Maine Granite Paving Block Company and to expand the market for his firm's products. Peirce soon became one of the largest stone contractors in the country, earning the title of "Granite King."

By the 1890s Peirce had expanded the scope of his business to include general building contracting, and he later became involved in a number of large-scale civic infrastructure projects including the construction of New York City's first subway system. Many of the city's most iconic structures were erected with the assistance of Peirce "s firm.

At the apex of his professional and personal life at the turn of the twentieth century, Peirce decided to build a new home for his family in the city's most prestigious residential neighborhood. He commissioned architect John H. Duncan to design a residence along the newly-popular American basement plan, an innovation in row house layout that allowed a more scientific division of space on the interior and which lent itself to a number of exterior architectural styles including the Italian Renaissance used for the Peirce Residence.

The most striking feature of the house is the full rustication of the lower three floors. The upper floors are faced with smooth ashlar stone, with projecting cornices above the third and fifth stories. While generally austere in demeanor, a number of scuptural elements—including the projecting balcony at the second floor and the ornamental stone keystones and wreaths—display a plasticity more typically associated with the lavish Beaux-Arts style.

When completed, the Peirce Residence stood in the middle of a distinguished row of houses overlooking St. Patrick's Cathedral. Within a few years, however, the fortunes of both John Peirce and the neighborhood changed dramatically. Peirce's company went into receivership in 1909 and failed altogether in 1915. He lost his residence to foreclosure in 1914, at a time when many wealthy families were abandoning the neighborhood to commercial and apartment house development.

The building at 11 East 51st Street was subsequently occupied by the Gardner School for Girls and later by a series of businesses. In spite of the changes of use and in the character of the surrounding neighborhood, the Peirce Residence remains nearly perfectly intact and is a significant reminder of the area's history as a prestigious residential district.

DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS

Early History and the Development of "Vanderbilt Row"

Far removed from the center of population at the tip of the Manhattan, the area surrounding Fifth Avenue between 42nd Street and the southern end of Central Park remained rural in character well into the first half of the nineteenth century. Most of the territory was originally owned by the City of New York, which had been granted "all the waste, vacant, unpatented, and unappropriated lands" under the Dongan Charter of 1686.

The city maintained possession of these common lands—which once totaled over one-seventh of the acreage on Manhattan—for over a century, only occasionally selling off small parcels to raise funds for the municipality. The city's policy changed after the American War of Independence. In 1785 the Common Council commissioned surveyor Casimir Theodore Goerck to map out five-acre lots to be sold at auction.

A new street called Middle Road, now known as Fifth Avenue, was laid out to provide access to the parcels. A second survey of additional lots was undertaken by Goerck in 1796 and two new roads, now Park and Sixth Avenues, were created.4 Under the city's plan, half of the lots were to be sold outright while the other half were made available under long-term leases of 21 years. Many of the parcels were acquired by wealthy New Yorkers as speculative investments in anticipation of future growth in the area.

James Mason, one-time president of the Chemical National Bank, for example, acquired most of the lots on the east side of Middle Road in the East 50s in 1825. A number public or public-minded institutions also purchased or were granted large plots along the avenue; the Colored Orphan Asylum was located between 43rd and 44th Streets, the Deaf and Dumb Asylum on 50th S

The Mount Olive Fire Baptized Holiness Church

The Mount Olive Fire Baptized Holiness Church

Harlem, Manhattan

The Mount Olive Fire Baptized Holiness Church, with its distinctive facade combining elements of the Gothic Revival and Romanesque Revival styles, was constructed in 1897 for the Second Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America. The Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America was founded in the late 18th century by Irish and Scottish worshippers who were fleeing persecution at home for their refusal to take oaths of loyalty to the British government. As church membership in New York City grew, so did the need for a second geographical division that would serve congregants living in Manhattan north of Chambers Street. On June 11, 1830, the Second Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America was organized, occupying a structure at 166 Waverly Place. In 1897, the Second Reformed Presbyterian Church constructed this house of worship at 304-308 West 122nd Street.

The selection of the Harlem site for the building is reflective of the increasing popularity of the neighborhood as a residential community, largely a result of the opening of elevated rail lines through northern Manhattan in the late 1870s and a proposed subway route in the late 1890s. In 1943, the Mount Olive Fire Baptized Holiness Church of God of the Americas purchased the church and continues to worship there today, 45 years later. The Fire Baptized Holiness Church of God of the Americas was founded in 1898 in Mountville, South Carolina, by a Methodist preacher, William Edward Fuller, Sr., after he received the "Baptism of the Holy Ghost and Fire" while praying alone in a corn field near his home. The one-story, beige brick building was designed in the Gothic- and Romanesque-Revival styles by architect James W. Cole.

Distinguishing features of the building include its symmetrical facade featuring pointed-arched window openings, terra-cotta ornament, stained-glass windows, crenellated brick corbelling at a prominently gabled roofline, and decorative pinnacles. James W. Cole designed numerous commercial and residential buildings throughout Manhattan, and examples of his work can be found in the Gansevoort Market, Greenwich Village, Mt. Morris Park, and Upper West Side / Central Park West Historic Districts. Among Cole's notable works is the Gothic Revival style Charles A. Vissani Residence at 143 West 95th Street, a designated New York City individual landmark, constructed in 1889.

History of Harlem

The Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan includes the area north of 110th Street to 155th Street, south of Washington Heights. The original village of Harlem was established in 1658 by Dutch Governor Peter Stuyvesant and named Nieuw Harlem after the Dutch city of Harlem. Throughout the Dutch, British, and colonial periods, rich farms were located in the region's flat eastern portion, while some of New York's most illustrious early families, such as the Delanceys, Bleeckers, Rikers, Beekmans, and Hamiltons maintained large estates in the western portion of the area. Like many large landowners, the Delanceys, Beekmans, and Rikers owned slaves, while no evidence has been found identifying either the Bleekers or the Hamiltons as slave owners.

The advent of new and better forms of transportation, as well as the rapidly increasing population of New York following the Civil War, brought about the transformation of Harlem into a middle and upper-middle class neighborhood. Although the New York and Harlem Railroad operated from lower Manhattan to Harlem beginning in 1837, service was unreliable and the trip was long. The impetus for new residential development in this area came with the arrival of three lines of elevated rail service which, by 1881, ran as far north as 129th Street and by 1886 extended farther north.

Beginning in the 1870s, Harlem was the site of a massive wave of speculative development that resulted in the construction of numerous new single-family rowhouses, tenements, and luxury apartment houses. Commercial concerns and religious, educational, and cultural institutions - such as the distinguished Harlem Opera House on West 125th Street - were established in Harlem to serve the expanding population. Those who relocated from downtown included recent immigrants from Great Britain and Germany.

Anticipated transportation improvements in the late 1890s, such as the proposed subway routes to west Harlem, ignited another wave of real estate speculation that led to highly-inflated market values. Between 1898 and 1904, when the Lenox Avenue subway opened at 145th Street, virtually all the vacant land in Harlem was developed. This tremendous increase in residential construction led to overbuilding. A general collapse of the real estate market hit Harlem in 1904-05 as loans were withheld and mortgages foreclosed; landlords dropped rents in an effort to attract tenants. Taking advantage of the deflated market and the housing surplus, a black businessman named Philip Payton and his Afro-American Realty Company, found

Because of extreme cold at upper altitude, aircrews wore warm, durable clothing. Both the M-445A heavy winter jacket and the matching M-446A trousers were lined with shearling, sheepskin tanned with the wool left on. The leather NAF-1092 flight helmet is fitted with A-N 6530 goggles. A Mark 1 life jacket or Mae West is worn over the jacket. While in the aircraft, crews wore a parachute harness on top of the other equipment. Gunners had special mittens with trigger fingers. The heavy shearling-lined boots with rubber soles feature two zippers, one for normal use and one with a leather, pull tab for use in an emergency. The .50 caliber Browning machine gun features an aircraft type grip; next to it stands a 250-round ammunition box. Zacatecas ‘Tomato King’ plagued by scandal

Story by : David Agren

Andres Bermudez left Zacatecas state as an impoverished field hand in 1974. He and his pregnant wife sneaked across the border, hiding in the trunk of a car. After a short stint working in a suitcase factory, Bermudez began laboring in the fields of northern California. His luck changed after he invented a device for planting tomatoes. The new contraption quickly became popular among growers, earning Bermudez the nickname, "The Tomato King." It also earned him a small fortune. He returned to his hometown of Jerez, Zacatecas in 2001 as a celebrity, a migrant made good from a spot lacking opportunities — a place where much of the population survives on remittances sent home from the United States. He capitalized on his notoriety, capturing the popular vote in the 2001 mayor's race, but was subsequently denied office by election officials, who ruled that he failed to meet the state's residency requirements. After successfully lobbying for a change in the law, he won again in 2004, this time running under the banner of Zacatecas' least popular political party.

"I'm not the king of tomatoes here," Bermudez humbly said during an interview at his wood-paneled office in Jerez city hall on a chilly December morning. "I'm the king of tomatoes in the (United States); I live like a king in the (United States), but not here."

Bermudez's electoral feat and his incredible rags-to-riches story captured international headlines. Observers hailed his triumph as an example of migrants flexing their political muscles in the communities they have long propped up through remittances. The Tomato King promised to turn Jerez, a sleepy burg of 60,000 in the Central Mexican highlands, into a mini America, a well-governed place teeming with prosperity and most importantly jobs. And in a threat to the old guard, he vowed to "Get the rats out of city hall." Somewhat bizarrely, he also promised visas for young workers heading to the United States and tomato-planting devices for poor campesinos (peasant farmers), who have been abandoning the countryside in droves.

But with notoriety came controversy and enemies. Several journalists and opposition city councilors allege Bermudez has engaged in corruption, nepotism, and lewd behavior and governed in an authoritarian style — like a king — intimidating opponents and employing thugish tactics. Emotions about Bermudez —a polemic figure — run high. Many Jerez residents preferred not to make on-the-record comments about the mayor.

"He's not better or worse than any of his predecessors," said Alfredo Saldana, owner of the Hotel Jardin in the Jerez centro. "But he has a lot more enemies."

Three members of Jerez's city council went on a hunger strike three weeks ago, demanding the state government take action against the mayor. Members of a Jerez citizens' group along with local residents opposed to Bermudez later barricaded the front doors to city hall for four days.

"A hunger strike is an extreme method," conceded Adriana Marquez Sanchez, a city councilor from the Workers' Party (PT), who

DOUGLAS M-2

DOUGLAS M-2

On April 17, 1926, Western Air Service, Inc., commenced operation on Contract Air Mail Route 4 (CAM-4) between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City. via Las Vegas. For service over this route, a distance of about 660 miles, Western selected the Douglas M-2 aircraft, a mailplane version of the 0-2 observation plane produced by the Douglas Company to replace the U.S. Army DH-4 aircraft.

The Douglas M-2 was selected because it was far superior in strength, construction, performance, and flying characteristics to other aircraft entered in the Post Office Department’s competition for airmail airplanes. The M-2 was a single-bay biplane with the conventional form of axleless undercarriage. The fuselage, a truss of steel tubes and tie rods, was made in two detachable sections. The engine section was detachable at the station at the front wing beam and the engine cowling was hinged to facilitate inspection. The fuselage aft of the firewall was covered with fabric. The wings, vertical fin, and horizontal stabilizer were of standard wood beam and built-up rib construction, with the elevators and rudder made of Duralumin tubing. The power plant was a 400-hp, Liberty water-cooled engine, with nose radiator. Two main fuel tanks, each of sixty gallons capacity and made of sheet aluminum, were so mounted in the lower wing that they could be jettisoned by the pilot. A small 10-gallon gravity tank was located in the upper wing.

A design detail of particular interest was the location and construction of the M-2 mail compartment. It was situated in front of the pilots cockpit, sealed from the engine by a fireproof bulkhead, and lined with reinforced Duralumin. It was six feet long, had a capacity of 58 cubic feet, and could carry up to 1,000 pounds of mail. A unique feature was the provision of two removable seats that permitted carrying passengers or reserve pilots from one field to another. The passengers were seated well down in the compartment and protected by suitable windshields. Access was provided by the use of aluminum covers over the top, arranged and constructed so that, with passengers aboard, the roof door could be folded down. providing a cockpit opening.

Flights were scheduled daily in both directions on the Los Angeles-to-Salt Lake City run, with one-way flight time averaging slightly in excess of six hours. The record time for the route was 4 hours, 12 minutes. The schedule was maintained by four regular pilots, two reserve pilots, eight mechanics, and three radio operators at the fields. Although transporting the mail remained the airlines’ chief concern, Western Air Express invited passenger traffic, and invaluable experience was gained flying passengers in the M-2 over the same rugged territory of eastern California. southern Nevada, and western Utah traveled many years before by the Mormons.

The M-2 performed remarkably well during the early years on the CAM-4 route. Its load-carrying capability, remarkable stability, and rugged construction contributed to a perfect safety record and profitable operation. Government and airline experiences with the Douglas mailplanes and the 0-2 led to modifications of the basic design. Relatively minor changes in cockpit layout, engine accessories, and airframe construction led to the M-3 mailplane, which differed little in physical appearance from the M-2 version. A subsequent addition of five feet to the wingspan resulted in the final version, the M-4, which realized considerable gain in payload at a negligible loss in performance. While Western eventually added two M-4s to its fleet of six M-2s, the M-4 saw more extensive service with National Air Transport (later United Air Lines) from 1927 to 1930 on the Chicago-New York route. National Air Transport modified all of its M-3s into the M-4 configuration and eventually had twenty-four Douglas mailplanes on its roster, to become the largest operator of this type in commercial service.

The M-2 of the National Air and Space Museum is believed to be the last Douglas mailplane in existence. This machine is actually an M-4 model originally purchased by Western from the Post Office Department in June 1927 and registered as NC 1475, serial number 338. The aircraft saw considerable service on Western’s mail route until 1930. when it crashed and was sold to Continental Air Map Company of Los Angeles. The airplane had a series of corporate and private owners until it was reacquired by Western Air Lines in April 1940 and subsequently registered with the Federal Aviation Administration as M-2 NC15O, Western’s first M-2. The first substantial restoration took place in 1946, although no attempt was made to make it flyable. For the next twenty two years, the M-2 made its home in a corner of Western’s hangar at Los Angeles International Airport. In 1974 an intensive, large-scale restoration effort commenced, under the impetus of retired Western Captain Ted Homan.

Varig's winter timetable from 1986.. an airline that was from an exotic far away land as seen by me back then. Their DC-10s were coming into Mirabel Airport and for me that was a highlight of any planespotting trip to YMX.

10 Years later Varig would cease operations and re-emerge as a much smaller scale carrier.. such a shame for an airline that started in 1927

Contemporary Knife Targeting: Modern Science vs. W.E. Fairbairn's Timetable of Death

William Fairbairn's Timetable of Death has been used for years as a standard reference tool by students of edged-weapon tactics. When Christopher Grosz began studying the timetable to validate its use as a reference for law-enforcement responses to edged-weapons attacks, he made a surprising discovery - the information in it was flawed. Grosz began a thorough analysis of Fairbairn's work, human anatomy and the realities of effective knife targeting. He later teamed up with knife expert Michael Janich to document it all in this book. Research was conducted with the help of recognized experts in both the medical and tactical fields. The result is a modern, medically accurate version of Fairbairn's original timetable - plus contemporary self-defense applications of the updated data - that will become the new definitive resource for all students of edged-weapons tactics.

Graduation Debt: How to Manage Student Loans and Live Your Life (CliffsNotes)

Graduation Debt is different from the competition because it provides a step-by-step road map for effectively managing student loan debt and having a successful financial life. Yet, it’s completely positive. The focus is less on sacrifice and more on not wasting money, so readers can live better lives while paying off debt.
The book's content is divided into small subsections geared toward those neck-deep in student debt. The brevity of each section makes the book digestible to those who aren’t inclined to focus on their finances. Readers are encouraged to take action steps such as finding long lost student loans that may have gone into default, discovering payment plans they can afford, consolidating loans when it makes sense to do so, saving money on eating out and groceries, improving credit scores, tweaking their debt-to-income ratios that's needed to buy a home, discussing their student loan and non-student loan debt with their significant others.
By the end of the book readers will be on the road to managing all their debt and having extra money for vacations and other fun stuff, too.
How to Miss Student Loan Payments Without Hurting Your Credit
Amazon-exclusive content from the author
Worried your credit will take a nose dive if you miss federal student loan payments? Your credit won’t be dinged if you call your loan servicer and qualify for a temporary payment reprieve.
What steps do you need to get approval for an excused absence from making payments?
1. Write down your monthly expenses and your monthly income on a piece of paper. Your loan servicer is going to want to know why you need a break from student loan payments.
2. Peruse the Department of Education’s or your servicer’s Web site to see if there are special reasons you might qualify for a payment break such as military service or you’re returning to school. You’ll find the words forbearance and deferment. These are the terms used for an approved temporary break from payment. The difference between the two is that in deferment the government will pay the interest charged until your deferment expires.
3. Write down circumstances that apply to you that you found on the same piece of paper as your finances.
4. Find the contact information for all your student loans. If you don’t have your paperwork for all your loan servicers, contact the department of Education or pull up your loan list by logging in to the National Student Loan Data System Web site.
5. Click on each loan that shows a balance in the Outstanding Principal column. Scroll down to the contact chart and write down the name of your servicer and the contact number. Repeat for each loan on which you still have a balance.
6. When you call each of your servicers, tell them you need either a deferment or forbearance. Then tell them your circumstances as to why you need a payment break. There may be a brand new type of forbearance or deferment that may work better for you.
7. Don’t accept more time than the maximum you could need at once, especially if you qualify for forbearance instead of a deferment. Why? Your interest still accrues if you are granted forbearance. For example, let’s say you have $60,000 in student debt at a rate of 5 percent. You decide to take a six-month payment break. Six months later, your loan has grown to $61,500 because of accrued interest and no payments made.
8. Fill out any necessary paperwork asked for by your servicer (s). Wait a week after you submit paperwork to call and verify paperwork has been received.
9. To protect your credit, wait to stop making payments until you’ve received a notice in writing from each servicer with the exact date your deferment or forbearance will begin and end. Call each servicer to verify this date and the date you should start making payments when your deferment or forbearance ends.
10. Keep your loan information in a folder in a place where you will be able to easily find the information later.

Farley Granger 1925 - 2011

Farley Granger 1925 - 2011

Actor who rose to fame in Hitchcock's Rope and Strangers On a Train, but refused to conform to Hollywood pressures

Early on in his career, the actor Farley Granger, who has died aged 85, worked with several of the world's greatest directors, including Alfred Hitchcock on Rope (1948) and Strangers On a Train (1951), Nicholas Ray on They Live By Night (1949) and Luchino Visconti on Senso (1953). Yet Granger failed to sustain the momentum of those years, meandering into television, some stage work and often indifferent European and American movies.

The reasons were complicated, owing much to his sexuality and an unwillingness to conform to Hollywood pressures, notably from his contract studio, MGM, and Samuel Goldwyn. Granger refused to play the publicity or marrying game common among gay and bisexual stars and turned down roles he considered unsuitable, earning a reputation – in his own words – for being "a naughty boy".

He was also the victim of bad luck, notably when Howard Hughes, the egomaniacal owner of RKO studios, took against They Live By Night, shelving it for a year before releasing it without fanfare. While his contemporary Charlton Heston had maintained that it was impossible not to launch his own acting career from two Cecil B DeMille movies, Granger had the far more difficult task of springboarding from his Hitchcock films, where the director had been the star.

Granger was born in San Jose, California, and first appeared on a school stage aged five. A dozen years later he was working in theatres around Los Angeles, when his dazzling good looks were noticed by a local talent scout. Aged 18 he made his screen debut as a curly-haired Russian soldier in Lewis Milestone's The North Star (1943).

Milestone also cast him in the role of a sergeant in The Purple Heart (1944), but by then the real war had caught up with the actor who, following his military service, took a long while to re-establish himself. Ray cast him in the leading role of They Live By Night, as the emotionally unstable crook Bowie, and by the time the film was released, he had appeared in the feeble Enchantment (1948) and the bucolic Roseanna McCoy (1949).

Luckily, he had also been loaned out for the claustrophobic Rope, filmed in 10-minute takes, resulting in an elegantly artificial movie, with the actors even more puppet-like than was usual with Hitchcock. Granger and John Dall were ideally cast as gay students who murder a friend to display a Nietzschean concept of supremacy. Granger played the highly strung Phillip, who cracks under the probing of their tutor (James Stewart). The public were less than enthusiastic. The director Jean Renoir scathingly dismissed the film, adding that it was "a film about homosexuals in which they don't even show the boys kissing".

Moving on, in 1950 Granger starred in the fast-paced thriller Side Street, directed by Anthony Mann, Edge of Doom and Our Very Own, before being rescued from the routine by Hitchcock, who cast him in another movie with a gay subtext, Strangers On a Train. He took the more conventional role of a handsome tennis champion, Guy Haines, mentally seduced by the unhinged Bruno (Robert Walker). Bruno obligingly murders the sportsman's wife, who is holding back Guy's career and social ambitions. When the killer wants repayment in kind – via the death of his own bullying father – matters go horribly wrong. Granger was bland rather than urbane, perplexed rather than intimidated, and despite charm, good looks and an attractive voice, he found his career not taking off.

Instead, routine fare such as Behave Yourself! (1951) and Small Town Girl (1953) followed. Even the sympathetic Vincente Minnelli made little of the star opposite Leslie Caron in The Story of Three Loves (1953). Granger needed to get out of his contract and was happy when he was loaned out by Goldwyn to star in Visconti's Senso. He was intriguingly cast as the embittered romantic Franz Mahler, an Austrian soldier who betrays the married woman besotted with him. She in turn betrays not only her country, Italy, but also those struggling politically against the invading forces. With dialogue by Tennessee Williams and Paul Bowles, the film took heady flight into a sumptuous period melodrama. It took many months to shoot and Granger relished new freedom in Europe, buying a house in Rome. Despite this he never worked again in anything comparable to Visconti's masterpiece.

Returning sporadically to the US, he played in The Naked Street (1955) as a hoodlum taken under the overly protective wing of Anthony Quinn, then had a better role as the murderous roue in Richard Fleischer's The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing (1955).

He returned to the stage, acting in The Carefree Tree on Broadway in 1955, and touring with The Seagull, Hedda Gabler and She Stoops to Conquer. Television offered the occasional bit of intelligent casting, including the grasping would-be lover in The Heiress (1961). The role had bee

Gene Kelly (1912 - 1996)

Gene Kelly (1912 - 1996)

Gene Kelly, Dancer of Vigor and Grace, Dies

Gene Kelly, the dancer, actor, director and choreographer who brought a vigorous athleticism, casual grace and an earthy masculinity to the high romance of lavish Hollywood musicals, died yesterday at his home in Beverly Hills, Calif. He was 83.

His longtime publicity agent, Warren Cowan, said Mr. Kelly had never fully recovered from strokes he suffered in 1994 and last year.

Mr. Kelly's highly developed sense of the possibilities of dance on film invigorated classic musicals like "Anchors Aweigh," "On the Town," "An American in Paris" and "Singin' in the Rain."

A gifted dancer with his own vibrant style, he also flourished as an innovative choreographer and director in the 1940's and 50's, the heyday of the big, splashy Hollywood musical.

Mr. Kelly, who could also put over a song in a high, thin voice, brought to his films an inventive technique that enabled him to create unusual and imaginative dance routines that usually arose directly out of a plot or script situation.

Thus millions of moviegoers remember Mr. Kelly dancing merrily in a downpour in "Singin' in the Rain," hoofing with an animated mouse, Jerry, in "Anchors Aweigh," hopping over garbage cans in a sequence in "It's Always Fair Weather" and, with the aid of special process photography, dancing with himself in the "alter ego" number from "Cover Girl."

In addition to his movies, which included "The Pirate," "Brigadoon" and the drama "Inherit the Wind," Mr. Kelly was also a star on Broadway, where he created the title role of the heel as hero in "Pal Joey," choreographed "Best Foot Forward" and directed Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Flower Drum Song."

"I don't really know why I clicked," Mr. Kelly said many years later. "I didn't want to be a dancer. I just did it to work my way through college. But I was always an athlete and gymnast, so it came naturally.

"In the 1930's, when I started, Martha Graham was the only dancer doing anything modern, but she did it all to classical music. I couldn't see myself doing 'Swan Lake' every night, and I wanted to develop a truly American style. The only dancer in the movies at that time with any success was Fred Astaire, but he did very small, elegant steps in a top hat, white tie and tails. I was too big physically for that kind of dancing, and I looked better in a sweatshirt and loafers anyway. It wasn't elegant, but it was me."

Eugene Curran Kelly was born on Aug. 23, 1912, in Pittsburgh. His mother insisted that all five of the Kelly children take music and dance lessons, and in high school Mr. Kelly continued dance lessons while also playing on the football and hockey teams. His education at Pennsylvania State College was interrupted by the Depression, and his first job was teaching gymnastics at a summer camp for boys.

He was later able to major in economics at the University of Pittsburgh and received a degree in 1933, but jobs were scarce and he went to work for a dancing school partly owned by his mother. Two years later, the school was renamed the Gene Kelly Studio of the Dance and soon a successful branch was opened in Johnstown.

Meanwhile, Mr. Kelly directed plays produced locally and formed a dance act with his brother Fred, with whom he performed in a theater for children at the Chicago World's Fair in 1934. In the mid-1930's Mr. Kelly also redirected vaudeville acts that passed through Pittsburgh.

Mr. Kelly did not decide to try his luck in New York until 1938, when he was 27 years old. His first job was as a Broadway chorus boy in 1938's "Leave It to Me," dancing while Mary Martin sang "My Heart Belongs to Daddy," but the next year he won critical acclaim for his featured role as the comic hoofer in William Saroyan's play "The Time of Your Life."

That success led to his being cast in "Pal Joey," the 1940 Rodgers and Hart musical, in which he played the unscrupulous central character so convincingly that John Martin, a critic for The New York Times, said, "He is not only glib-footed, but he has a feeling for comment and content that give his dancing personal distinction and raise it several notches as a dancing art."

Mr. Kelly's ability to meld singing and dancing with characterization and the demands of the play's plot attracted so much notice that David O. Selznick signed him to an exclusive Hollywood contract. At the time, Mr. Kelly was appearing in "Pal Joey" at night and by day choreographing the Broadway musical hit "Best Foot Forward."

In 1941, he left for Hollywood, where he was to bring a new vitality to dance on film and help change the whole concept of movie musicals.

Mr. Selznick had no musicals planned, however, and lent Mr. Kelly to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the studio mo

Morning all. This is an old shot from last year. I have not posted a wildlife shot for a while. Not my best composition and the bird is flying away but I feel that it somehow works. Hope you are all well and ready for the week ahead.

Superman - The Movie (Four-Disc Special Edition)

A box-office smash, an Academy Award winner* and a fan favorite since it first flew into theatres in December 1978, Superman: The Movie assembles a cast and creative contingent as only a big movie can. At its heart (just as in three sequels) is Christopher Reeve's intelligent, affectionate portrayal of a most human Man of Steel. Watching Superman again isn't just like being a kid again. It's better. The movie's legacy soared even higher when director Richard Donner revisited this beloved adventure 22 years later and integrated eight minutes into the film. Enjoy more footage of the Krypton Council, a glimpse of stars of prior Superman incarnations, more of Jor-El underscoring his son's purpose on Earth and an extended sequence inside Lex Luthor's gauntlet of doom. Reeve, Marlon Brando (Jor-El), Gene Hackman (Luthor) and Margot Kidder (Lois Lane) give indelible performances that fuel the film's aura of legend. Looks like a swell night for flying. Why not come along?

Richard Donner's 1978 epic about the Man of Steel showed how a film about a superhero could be a moving and romantic experience even for people who long ago gave up comic books. Beginning on the icy planet Krypton, the story follows the baby Kal-El, whose rocket ship lands in Smallville, Kansas. He is found there by a childless couple and raised as the shy Clark Kent (the young Kent is played by Jeff East). The film is perhaps most touching in these sequences, with expanses of wheat fields blowing in the wind and with a young man who can't figure out what part in destiny his great powers are meant to play. The second half, with Reeve taking over as Clark/Superman, is bustling, enchanting (the scene in which Superman flies girlfriend Lois Lane--played by Margot Kidder--through the night sky is great date material), and funny, thanks largely to Gene Hackman's sardonic portrayal of nemesis Lex Luthor. --Tom Keogh
