Kwangtung In Harbour
Kwangtung Voyage #23
Tuesday 31st May 1994: Kwangtung in Tamatave
In 1994, I spent three months working on a container ship sailing between Europe and ports in the Indian Ocean. I recently discovered my slide photos from the trip, and have scanned some of them into my computer.
This is one of the few photographs I that I was able to take of the whole ship. She can carry nearly 1000 containers, and is manned by 8 officers and 15 'ratings'. I was designated an Officer Cadet. The ratings consisted of fourteen Filipinos, plus a Chinese cook, whilst the officers were mainly drawn from Scotland and Newcastle. We all lived in the white accommodation block at the back of the ship.
Work mainly took place from nine until five, with evenings spent at the (duty free, extremely cheap) bar, or watching videos: no DVDs or computer games in those days. There was a gym, but no one needed to go there due to the amount of manual labour during the course of the day!
The officers however worked on a 'watch' system: four hours working then eight hours off, effectively completing two 12-hour days every 24 hours. In addition, one of the engineering officers would need to be on call through the night in case of engine problems.
