Flowering Plants That Like Shade

    flowering plants
  • A plant that produces flowers; an angiosperm

  • (flowering plant) angiosperm: plants having seeds in a closed ovary

  • (Magnoliophyta). This is the most diverse and numerous division of plants, with upwards of 400,000 species. Typically the largest flowering plant (angiosperm) has been considered Eucalyptus regnans, which can reach heights of 92 m (304 ft)[6].

  • (2. flowering plant) a plant with long sword-shaped leaves. Flowers: many-colored. Genus Iris.

    shade
  • Cover, moderate, or exclude the light of

  • shadow: cast a shadow over

  • Screen from direct light

  • represent the effect of shade or shadow on

  • Darken or color (an illustration or diagram) with parallel pencil lines or a block of color

  • relative darkness caused by light rays being intercepted by an opaque body; "it is much cooler in the shade"; "there's too much shadiness to take good photographs"

Time

Time

I came back from walking Pete from the north, so that we passed the neighbor to the north where he has many flowers planted along the sidewalk. They must have come back from last year because he obviously isn't taking care of his yard like he used to. He used to have a different boyfriend living there who manicured the lawn like it was Buckingham Palace during tourist season. Now, tall grasses that looked like green wheat stalks with seeds on top grew taller among the flowers. It was all beautiful in a pristine sort of way, as if the grasses had every right to be there, too. All of the flowers were shadowed by a great elm tree from across the street, except for one little patch lit by sun, and that patch was full of tall, spindly flowers, the color of a king's robe. I thought it would make a good snapshot, one of those moments that many people would pass unnoticed, going about their busy lives thinking about what to get at the grocery store or how awful it's going to be to have back surgery with two little children to chase after, and so it's the photographer's job to say wait, look. The sun is shining through the shade on this one little spot of tall purple flowers. Isn't that beautiful?

So I brought Pete in the house, panting after a hot walk in the sun. I unlatched his harness, making myself slow down. I often have issues with time. There isn't enough time, or so it seems, and I've had to make myself know that all there is is time, and if I don't get that shot now, another will come along that may even be better, more beautiful, more meaningful. So don't worry. There is enough time. I hung his harness, got my camera. Phyllis was up by then and I said I'll be right back. I have to get this shot before it's gone.

I went back out to where the sun had lit the purple flower so beautifully, only two minutes before, but it was gone. Damn, I thought. I missed it. So I snapped a photo of the white daisy-like flowers which were all in shade, and I made the shutter speed fast so that the background was dark and the white flowers were still bright white, but not blown out. The white flowers are interwoven with tall wild grasses with seeds, just as it should be, and there are a few of the purple flowers, too, and the time was just right.

Window box idea

Window box idea

After buying some plants at the newly opened and currently sparsely stocked kiosk at Mont-Royal Metro I came up with this idea for a window box. If being applied to a longer planter, I recommend adding in many more heliotrope and lavender plants (different varieties if it suits you) with all the purple shades of lobelia and purple creepy things you can find. Perhaps some purple fuschias?

My summer job during University was at a greenhouse and before I was a knitting/quilting dork, I was a hardcore plant dork. My mom and I collected orchids while I was in high school kind of dork.

This idea was sparked from my eternal love for lavender, heliotrope and purple lobelia.
