The other day at work (in the cellular support industry) a supervisor said with wide eyes, "When was the last time you saw a cell phone with an external antenna?" I said, "uh, 2005, on the Palm Treo 600?" Phone with antennas are pretty rare now -- the industry term for what phones have now are "intennas" -- but my new one has an antenna built into it.
Now, to clarify: the antenna is for analog television reception (and I'd hope it works for FM radio too), not cellular signal. And the topmost section looks even more unintentionally bendable than those easily-snapped Treo antennae. But this does answer the question when the last time you saw a cell with an aerial was.
Pantech PX-500 external antenna port
Pantech PX-500 external antenna connector. I was sent the wrong cable and could not get it to work. I ended up breaking the antenna port and took it apart to find the problem. I replaced card and have the correct cable now. Works great now. Many people having the same problem.
