VINTAGE GLASS NEGATIVE 13
Two young women, fast asleep. They may be siblings and part of the family in the Victorian household where they live, or perhaps servants. The household is well-to-do: the bed linen is freshly pressed and the bedspread is of obvious quality, as are their nightdresses. On the bedside table is a wash bowl, hairbrush and toothbrush along with a candle stub, snuffer and matches. Lace curtains are at the window and the room is papered rather than having plain whitewashed walls. I would date the photograph at the turn of the last century, around 1900. This image is a low resolution version of the original negative, captured photographically rather than with a scanner. Half plate size; dry plate process.
Encaustic Wax Painting 'Rocket Before Launch'
This is an original encaustic painting.
Created on a wooden plaque, it measures approximately 7X7 inches, with a depth of 3/4 inch.
Space! I can't stop playing with these images.
This work uses multiple techniques, to create a dynamic surface.
-Rice paper was laid into the melted wax on my hot plate palette to create a monoprint, which I then collaged into the painting to create more layers
-The rocket is collaged on top of the layers, and the wax colours show through as the paper became transluscent paper
-I added more colours on top of the different layers
-I painted the sides of the plaque with thick black wax to play with even more texture
