(Advanced Ceramics) A ceramic is an inorganic, non-metallic solid prepared by the action of heat and subsequent cooling. Ceramic materials may have a crystalline or partly crystalline structure, or may be amorphous (e.g., a glass).


(advanced ceramics) Ceramic materials that exhibit superior mechanical properties, corrosion/oxidation resistance, or electrical, optical, and/or magnetic properties.


(advanced ceramics) Substances based on metal oxides like alumina (Al2O3), inorganic non-metal oxides like silica (SiO2) and nitrides like silicon nitride (Si3N4). Unlike traditional clay-based ceramics (pottery), advanced ceramics do not necessarily need to be earth-derived.
