Harpers GK-501
This is a small tube portable. Several Japanese manufacturers made tube radios. The technology was cheap and proven and consumers were 'comfortable' with the technology. After all, tube radios had been around since the 20's.
In North America during the 30's and 40's a standard five tube radio was called an AA5 (All American Five). I call these Japanese tube portables AJ4 (All Japanese Four)
The cabinet of this Harpers was made from a thermosetting plastic: perhaps plaskon. It is very thick and brittle. Gorgeous slab of reverse painting on the right.
Tube and solid state radios were on the market together for several years in the late 50's. Although tube radios were more affordable to buy, battery consumption made transistor radios the more economical choice in the long run.
Tube compliment: 1R5, 1T4, 1S5, 3S4
power requirements - 1.5 volt 'A' battery, 67.5 volt 'B' battery
"The old grey mare" 888DUK, Harper Brothers, Cannock 1974
This photo was taken in Cannock around the time that Harper Brothers were taken over by Midland Red in 1974.
888DUK was a Strachans bodied Guy Arab V, originally a demonstrator, but later bought by Harper Brothers.
It was originally in an unpainted (bare aluminium) livery which earned it the nickname with Harper's staff "the old grey mare". By 1974 it was in Harper's own colours.
According to an Ex Harper's driver the front roof damage was caused by this bus (being higher than others in the fleet) hitting a garage exit that was too low.
This bus didn't last long with Midland Red after the takeover in 1974.
