High Seas Motel
When I first came to Rehoboth in the summer of 1991 with Ligia and Pete I parked in the Wilmington Savings parking lot on Main Street, figuring that as they were closed they wouldn't enforce all their warnings to tow anyone who left their car there. The street leading off Main Street was called Christian Street and so I felt obliged to walk along it. At the end was the High Seas Motel, which looked reasonably priced, so we went into the office to find out how much it was for the night. The owner was Greek, opens the motel for six months in the summer and goes back to Greece for the winter. We ended up staying and went back for a number of summers after that, until Ligia's hostility to the gay couples everywhere made me switch to Bethany Beach. But for my first family vacation without Ligia I decide to go back. The room is cramped, especially with four of us, but it's cheap and clean and only two blocks from the beach. I'm sitting on one of those white chairs having an unnecessary final glass of wine as the memories come rolling in, "rolling through stormy weather".
Alcona Beach Motel
On of these days I'm going to get brave and just drive down there and check the place out. All you see from US-23 is this sign (a nice one at that), but the motel itself is hidden way back on Lake Huron. It's only 6 units, and pretty cheap for a week ($450). Might make a nice summer getaway. They don't open until June, which accounts for the "closed" sign.
