Initial builders "saved" on flashing. It leaked. The roofer that repaired it "saved" on it again. I didn't verify his job - he was a "reputable" roofer, recommended by an acquaintance.
Had I not read the book on roofing before hiring the roofers the next time it was required, I would've been sure it's OK, It's actually not - the concrete you see is a bit over a year old, and it's already cracked through - so I'm already living on a borrowed time.
Moral of the story: want to do it good - do it yourself. Or at least read a book so you're able to verify the job. And don't be afraid to get on the roof (or wherever the repair is) and see for yourself.
And don't take your friends' words for granted- they may be as clueless as you are.
Renaissance farmer
Just because you see a guy in a gimmee hat and boots, it doesn't mean that he isn't interested in fine wine, oil painting, and can shed a tear for a Pavarotti retrospective on Youtube.com. One brother-n-law Steve is one such man and, before he became a chicken farmer, was as much a "city slicker" as you or me...we'll, maybe a little less, as Steve has always been a do-it-yourself kind of guy, doing his own vehicle maintenance, minor home remodeling, etc. But, as busy as things can get on the farm, there are also big pockets of down time, where it can get quiet and lonely, leaving plenty of evenings to work on hobbies that don't involve killing varmints or repairing roofs.
