My iMac is 6-plus years old. The last six months its been making a noise, but I have just ignored it.
So, finally two days ago I got a beeping noise and this file folder icon with a question mark on it. It would not even boot up.
Monday came and I biked down into Austin to locate a cheap used Hard drive - found a 20Gig for $30 and came home to do the surgery.
Kitchen table was cleaned off and tools all assembled in a big pile.
Jolt cola running through my veins and the imaginary noises of a M*A*S*H unit buzzing in my head I removed screw after screw and got to the housing for the drives. I carefully put the new one in and then put everything back together.
With trepidation, I powered on the computer with the boot-up disk I found.
Lots of scratching noises and then kernel panic text screamed across the blue screen of death.
I was frustrated and went to bed unhappy and disappointed.
The next day came, I went ahead and saw Ultraviolet at the Alamo Drafthouse and had myself a $5 milkshake. It was excellent and I came home, with the hopes to get the iMac working.
Again, it would not boot up, so i ejected it and noticed it was scratched up. Searching boxes and boxes, I found other boot-up disks. Again, I tried.
This time everything worked beautifully, and I'm happy to say my iMac is working. Six years and only one hard drive problem. $30 fix. Not many PC users can claim this feat. Viva la Mac!

Fujitsu 80GB, serial ATA, 2.5" hardrive for laptop for sale for $40.
The hard dive has been clean formatted for mac but can be reformatted for PC.
