Daniel's Brother

Daniel's Brother

From inside the orphanage on Pinky Street, a little girl peered out the window. She saw the back of a man sitting at the curb. The girl unlocked the door and stepped outside. "Hello," she said, causing the man to turn. The girl walked over beside him. "Are you waiting for someone?"

The man rested his hands on his legs. "Just my luck, I walk all the way down here, and just as the place is in view, what do I see? The old man walking off in the other direction! I'm waiting until he gets back."

"You can wait inside," the girl said. She took the man by the hand and helped him up from sidewalk curb. "By the way, I'm the Irregular, Sarah."

"The what now? Oh, of course, Daniel's Irregulars. My name is Michael. Speaking of Daniel, have you seen him recently? That's what I came to talk to the old man about."

"You should talk with Jennifer," Sarah said, tugging at Michael's arm and leading him inside the orphanage. "Jennifer, Jennifer!" Sarah called as she pulled Michael into the reading room.

"Yes?" Jennifer looked up from playing a game of Connect Four with Chloe. She noticed the man standing beside Sarah. "Can I help you?" She dropped her black disc into the game slot. "Connect Four!" she said, giving Chloe a pat on the head. She walked over to the man. "You look familiar. Do I know you?" The man didn't say anything. "Sarah, go play Connect Four with Chloe. I'll take our guest to the kitchen and get him something to drink."

Michael followed Jennifer to the kitchen. "Have you seen Daniel?" he asked as Jennifer opened a cupboard over the counter.

She set two cups on the counter. She paused. "No. It's been two weeks since I last saw him. He's been missing for over a week now."

"He's fine. I'm sure he is." Michael carefully walked along the tile kitchen floor, avoiding stepping on the cracks between tiles. He put a hand on Jennifer's shoulder. "Daniel is Daniel. He can survive anything. No one knows that better than his big brother."

Those words startled Jennifer, her arm knocking over one of the empty cups. "Brother?" She pulled away from Michael's hand. "I didn't know Daniel had a brother." She backed away from him. "He never said anything about having a brother. Can you prove it?"

"I can understand how upset you must be with Daniel missing." Michael leaned his arms on the edge of the counter. "Then I just walk right in here and start saying unexpected things." He reached into his back pocket, pulling out his wallet. He slid a card from it, placing it on the counter. "Give this to the caretaker when he gets back. He'll confirm who I am. I'll stop by for something to drink another time." He waved an arm at his side as he walked out of the kitchen.

After hearing the front door open and close, Jennifer reached for the paper card. She picked it up and looked at the printed message. "'The Peacock’s Feather. Jewelry and antiques, appraisal and restoration. Michael McGrath.' Was he looking for someone named Daniel McGrath?"

That evening, Clara returned with the old caretaker who runs the orphanage. The two brought in groceries and other items they bought while in town. Jennifer told the two what had happened, and she gave the old man Michael's card.

"The two are half-brothers," the old man told her. "That's why they have different names." He handed the card back to her. "Go tell the girls to clean the play room while Clara helps me prepare dinner."

On her way to the play room, Jennifer took a detour to the front room. She set her hand against the cold window, seeing darkness where the street light had stopped working a month prior. "Where are you, Daniel? Are you in the dark somewhere? Are you all alone? Can't you return? We need you. All of us need you. I—"
