Parker Air Filter

Speedway Sprint Turning Right to Go Left
I was invited to take pictures of Parker Colston driving his #64 Speedway Sprint car at a private track. I quickly researched photographing race cars before going to the track, and found an article on the Internet. It described a technique for photographing race cars by carefully tracking them while using a relatively slow shutter speed to produce a sharp image of the car with a blurred background.
Of over 400 pictures that I took during the session using a variety of lenses and shutter speeds, this was by far my favorite. Parker is pointed right at me, turning left even though the wheels are cranked all the way to the right. The rear wheels are broken loose and spinning so fast that the lateral grooves in the tires have completely disappeared. I didn't know about ND filters at the time, and intense sunlight made all my pictures at 1/60 second and slower too bright. Fortunately, I was able to salvage this picture in the GIMP.
Parker Colston is only 12 years old, but he already has an impressive racing resume that includes the 2009 "Rookie of the Year". Parker made it look almost effortless as he smoothly tried just about every line on the track, ultimately finding the greatest speed towards the inside. Could this be the next Kinser or Gordon? Stay tuned!
As for the car, a Speedway Sprint is essentially a miniature replica of a Sprint Car. It's powered by an air-cooled 500cc single cylinder, overhead cam, single speed, dry clutch engine made in the Czech republic by Jawa Motors for Speedway motorcycle racing. Running on methanol, the engine develops approximately 65 horsepower. Considering the car only weighs about 300 pounds, it has a pretty incredible power to weight ratio.
