In order to keep sand off our beach bag and cooler of food/drink and my camera bag, my husband puts down a tarp on the sand and uses a rubber mallet to pound tent stakes into the grommets at each corner of the tarp.
Large stores now sell a "beach blanket" that is very small and can be laid out on the sand to give a cleaner place to work--especially with a camera. The wind may blow it, but it's better than having nothing covering the sand--if you are working with a camera.
365:162 I found utopia (and it is a food store?)
My daughter's field trip to Six Flags New England was today. I opted to not bring any camera gear into the park again this year. We rode a lot of rides while there - including three rollercoasters (what was I thinking?!) After we were done, I was hunting around in Agawam for a photo. I stumbled across Utopia (Thomas More would be proud) - which happens to be a food store. It was either this or a hay truck I shot at a rest stop on the way home. This was more colorful.
